Crystal growth of bulk CdTe in short-duration microgravity is performed by the unidirectional cooling method. The largest growth grains in microgravity samples are 4X2mm. The cooling profiles indicate undercooling melts in microgravity. Cooling melt samples in microgravity generate strong gradient of temperature due to stop thermal convections. Temperature distribution in the melt is calculated by the one-dimensional equation of heat conduction, and about 100 K-undercooling is considered to occur at the cooling surface.

The following types of experiments for a proposed Space Station Microgravity Particle Research Facility are described: (1) nucleation of refractory vapors at low pressure/high temperature; (2) coagulation of refractory grains; (3) optical properties of refractory grains; (4) mantle growth on refractory cores; (5) coagulation of core-mantle grains; (6) optical properties of core-mantle grains; (7) lightning strokes in the primitive solar nebula; and (8) separation of dust from a grain/gas mixture that interacts with a meter-sized planetesimal to determine if accretion occurs. The required capabilities and desired hardware for the facility are detailed.

Model calculations, which include the effects of turbulence during subsequent solar nebula evolution after the collapse of a cool interstellar cloud, can reconcile some of the apparent differences between physical parameters obtained from theory and the cosmochemical record. Two important aspects of turbulence in a protoplanetary cloud include the growth and transport of solid grains. While the physical effects of the process can be calculated and compared with the probable remains of the nebula formulation period, the more subtle effects on primitive grains and their survival in the cosmochemical record cannot be readily evaluated. The environment offered by the Space Station (or Space Shuttle) experimental facility can provide the vacuum and low gravity conditions for sufficiently long time periods required for experimental verification of these cosmochemical models.

The radial current density distribution on the cathode longitudinal surface of magnetoplasmadynamic arcjets for axisymmetric geometries has been obtained by simultaneous solution of the electromagnetic equations for a given uniform gas dynamic field. The problem formulation permits a parametric study of the effects of the Hall parameter and the magnetic Reynolds number. The solution for the current density distribution displays current concentrations at two locations, that is, at the upstream and downstream ends of the cathode. This result is in conformity with known experimental data. The parameters responsible for these current concentrations are identified. It is shown that the effect of the magnetic Reynolds number on the current density distribution is different depending on whether or not the Hall effect is included. This result is also found to be consistent with experimental data.

The effect of the test gas on the flow field around a 120degrees apex angle blunt cone has been investigated in a shock tunnel at a nominal Mach number of 5.75. The shock standoff distance around the blunt cone was measured by an electrical discharge technique using both carbon dioxide and air as test gases. The forebody laminar convective heat transfer to the blunt cone was measured with platinum thin-film sensors in both air and carbon dioxide environments. An increase of 10 to 15% in the measured heat transfer values was observed with carbon dioxide as the test gas in comparison to air. The measured thickness of the shock layer along the stagnation streamline was 3.57 +/- 0.17 mm in air and 3.29 +/- 0.26 mm in carbon dioxide. The computed thickness of the shock layer for air and carbon dioxide were 3.98 mm and 3.02 mm, respectively. The observed increase in the measured heat transfer rates in carbon dioxide compared to air was due to the higher density ratio across the bow shock wave and the reduced shock layer thickness.

The AltiKa altimeter records the reflection of Ka-band radar pulses from the Earth’s surface, with the commonly used waveform product involving the summation of 96 returns to provide average echoes at 40 Hz. Occasionally there are one-second recordings of the complex individual echoes (IEs), which facilitate the evaluation of on-board processing and offer the potential for new processing strategies. Our investigation of these IEs over the ocean confirms the on-board operations, whilst noting that data quantization limits the accuracy in the thermal noise region. By constructing average waveforms from 32 IEs at a time, and applying an innovative subwaveform retracker, we demonstrate that accurate height and wave height information can be retrieved from very short sections of data. Early exploration of the complex echoes reveals structure in the phase information similar to that noted for Envisat’s IEs.
