Structural analysis of SNARE motifs from sea perch, Lateolabrax japonicus by computerized approaches

Three cDNA sequences encoding four SNARE (N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors) motifs were cloned from sea perch, and the deduced peptide sequences were analyzed for structural prediction by using 14 different web servers and softwares. The "ionic layer" structure, the three dimensional extension and conformational characters of the SNARE 7S core complex by using bioinformatics approaches were compared respectively with those from mammalian X-ray crystallographic investigations. The result suggested that the formation and stabilization of fish SNARE core complex might be driven by hydrophobic association, hydrogen bond among R group of core amino acids and electrostatic attraction at molecular level. This revealed that the SNARE proteins interaction of the fish may share the same molecular mechanism with that of mammal, indicating the universality and solidity of SNARE core complex theory. This work is also an attempt to get the protein 3D structural information which appears to be similar to that obtained through X-ray crystallography, only by using computerized approaches. Nonaqueous sol-gel routes to doped metal oxide nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, assembly and properties

The results presented in this thesis have been achieved under the Ph.D. project entitled “Nonaqueous Sol-Gel routes to doped metal oxide nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, assembly and properties”. The purpose of this study is the investigation of metal oxide nanostructures doped with metals of a diverse nature, leading to different type of applications. The easier control over the reaction kinetics in solvothermal routes, compared to aqueous methods, allows to better match the reactivity between metal oxide precursors, paving the way to a facile and low temperature production of doped oxides. In this manuscript diverse examples of the exploitation of the “Benzyl Alcohol Route” are discussed. Such a powerful pathway was utilized for the synthesis of transition metal doped zirconia, hafnia and various perovskites, and the study of their magnetic properties, as well as the synthesis of rare earth doped zirconium oxide. A further extension, proving the solidity of the synthetic method, is shown for the preparation of Li4Ti5O12 nanocrystals carrying excellent electrochemical properties for lithium-ion battery applications. Finally, the effect of doping and other reaction parameters on the assembly of the nanocrystals is discussed. These studies were carried out principally at the University of Aveiro, as well as at the University of Montpellier II and at the Seoul National University due to complementary available expertises and equipments.

Es el reimplante valvular mejor que el Bentall Biológico Modificado para tratar aneurismas de la raíz asociados a insuficiencia? Objetivo: comparar resultados funcionales, morbilidad y sobrevida a corto y mediano plazo, tras la realización de Bentall modificado con prótesis Freestyle vs reimplante valvular de Tirone David, en insuficiencia aortica secundaria a aneurisma de la raíz. Diseño: revisión de registros institucionales de 88 pacientes tratados entre enero de 2003 y agosto de 2009 con insuficiencia aortica secundaria a aneurisma de la raíz sin daño valvular, distribuidos en dos cohortes: Grupo 1 (Bentall modificado) y Grupo 2 (reimplante valvular). Se evaluaron complicaciones perioperatorias, transfusiones, estancias hospitalarias y en el seguimiento a mediano plazo insuficiencia valvular, clase funcional, función ventricular y sobrevida. Solidez de los resultados verificada mediante análisis de propensidad con balanceo de grupos. Resultados: Grupo (1) 51(57.9%) pacientes y grupo (2) 37(42.1%). Aunque el grupo 2 es mas joven, patrones similares de coomorbilidad, anatomía de la raíz, función y diámetros ventriculares hacen comparables los dos grupos. Seguimiento de 3.3 años (IQR 2.0-4.4). Mortalidad temprana 2(3.8%) vs 0 p =0.2 y tardía de 2(4.1%) vs 0 p=0.33. El análisis estratificado de covariables en bloques de distribución tampoco identifica diferencias en mortalidad. El análisis de sobrevida de mortalidad y sobrevida libre de eventos identifica desenlaces similares entre los grupos (Log-Rank chi2=0.9, p=0.3); incluyendo Insuficiencia aortica = II temprana (3.8% vs 0, p=0.2) y tardía (3.8%vs 0, p=0.1), transfusiones perioperatorias, reintervenciones por sangrado (2.3% vs 3.4%, p=0.4), arritmias (25.5% vs 13.5%, p=0.2) y disfunción neurológica (5.7% vs 2.9%, p=0.9). Finalmente la hospitalización total (6.5 {1-35} vs 4{3-16} p=0.001) y estancia en Cuidado intensivo (2.5 {1-21} vs 1{1-16} p=0.001) es superior en el grupo1. Conclusiones: el tratamiento de los aneurismas de la raíz aortica asociados a insuficiencia valvular sin daño estructural, mediante reimplante valvular o Bentall biológico modificado ofrece resultados similares a corto y mediano plazo. La preservación valvular se asocia a estancias mas cortas, pero no hay diferencia en complicaciones postoperatorias, estatus funcional, insuficiencia valvular, función ventricular, mortalidad y sobrevida libre de eventos adversos.

Análisis financiero de la empresa Novartis de Colombia y el sector farmacéutico en Colombia

El siguiente trabajo de grado para la Facultad de Administración de la Universidad del Rosario, tiene como principal objetivo realizar un análisis financiero de Novartis de Colombia, empresa multinacional Suiza que opera en Colombia como filial. Así mismo, poder indagar qué implicaciones tienen los cambios dentro del sector farmacéutico de Colombia en las finanzas de la empresa. El trabajo busca determinar de qué manera Novartis de Colombia usa sus recursos para ser una de las empresas del sector mejor posicionada a pesar de los grandes cambios que la industria farmacéutica ha estado afrontando durante los últimos años. Para esto se deben utilizar diferentes herramientas e indicadores financieros que ayudarán a identificar, analizar, describir y evaluar los aspectos claves que garantizan el éxito de la empresa.

Bolívar Echeverría: azares de la filosofía (In Memorian)

Hernández plantea en este tributo al desaparecido filósofo y ensayista ecuatoriano, Bolívar Echeverría, que su discurso crítico asume lo que se llamaría, más que filosofía, el pensar. El pensamiento en la América Latina de los 60 se debatía entre varias inquietudes, afirma. Primero, se pretendía hacer una filosofía nacional o de la militancia política. Segundo, se percibía como un problema la necesidad de la filosofía de inscribirse en la Academia. Por último, se instaba a que en filosofía también primara el compromiso de los intelectuales con el presente. Y en el presente coexistían la embriaguez por el cambio revolucionario y cierto pesimismo de la época –agotamiento, dolor y horror por las víctimas de las transformaciones–. Entonces, según Hernández, Echeverría se preguntó por la relación entre Modernidad y Revolución, entre Modernidad y los períodos posteriores de la estabilidad de la Reforma. Consiguió formular la época y formular, a la vez, un pensamiento crítico.Y avanzó más: observó que, pese al efecto devastador del proyecto moderno, la cultura resistía y hacía surgir nuevas formas para mantener las esferas del mundo de la vida. Era el caso de lo barroco, “una estrategia para hacer ‘vivible’ algo que básicamente no lo es”. Moverse en estas sendas, se pregunta Echeverría, ¿no equivale al acontecimiento del pensar?

Avatar Obama in the age of liquid celebrity

Barak Obama, orator extraordinaire, the embodiment of the American success myth, 'global' prophet of the adoring masses and multi-media auratic figure, is the leading illustration of what is the expanded nexus of celebrity, spectacle and politics in the age of what Zygmund Bauman refers to as liquid modernity or 'the era of disembedding without re-embedding' (2001, p. 89). This is the era in which a traumatic sense of fear, uncertainty and transience defines one's relationship to the nation state, and social (media) centre, as they lose their economic singularity and cultural coherency and cohesiveness in a world system ever inter-connected and driven increasingly, incessantly by supra-corporate concerns and spectacular celebrity-based presentations. In this world of 'togetherness dismantled' (Bauman 2003, p. 119), the disenfranchised individual feels they cannot meet the trans-capital intensive, show reel-like, boundaryless world on solid ground. That adoration, or a liquefied definition of it, is key to this imagined and affective communion between Obama and those who adore him, suggests that there is a terrible wanting and simultaneous waning to those who look for such rootedness and the promise of deliverance in the celebrity political figure. This is a charismatic authority figure who promises this solidity yet streams in and out of material view, unable to fix or properly propagate their communion beyond triumphant spectacularism. Their 'lightness of being' (ibid, p. 123-9) is powerfully seductive and decidedly empty because it echoes the instantaneous (instant) way in which all lives are increasingly led. I will suggest that liquid celebrity is one of the cornerstones of liquid modernity, and Barack Obama is the epitome of this 'runniness'.

Uma abordagem institucional da carcinicultura do Rio Grande do Norte de 1999 a 2009

This study analyzes the institucional environment and its changes around the carcinicultora activity in Rio Grande do Norte from the understanding of its trajectory and the macroinstitucional elements micron and that characterizes the activity in the period of 1999 the 2009. In the analysis of the occured institucional changes in the carcinicultura the Guaraíra Estuary is overcome as space reference, located in the eastern coast of the Rio Grande of the North. The analysis proposal has for base the adoption of the conceptual support of the innovative institucionalistas and neoshumpterianas theories, for understanding that these bring complementary and enriching elements that will allow an analysis, not static, but, dynamics of the carcinicultora activity. It was verified that the crisis brought up for the antidumping action, for the problems of the illnesses that had abated the shrimp, for the depreciation of the Real, among others it led to an overturn in the productive conjuncture of market and forced the alteration of the effective institutions. This institucional alteration, goes in the direction to search to take care of the new demands of the carcinicultura that was possible for the solidity of the institucional foundations constructed throughout the thirty previous years and the consequent consolidation of the composed institucional apparatus for rich a mix of organizations, not only for agencies of government, as well as for organizations with social representation

O púlpito como cátedra: retórica e educação nos sermões do Pe. Antônio Vieira (1608-1697)

This work aims to analyze the relationship among culture, education and rhetoric on the sermons of the Priest Antonio Vieira (1608-1697). It discusses the presence of oratory on the Western teaching since its Greek origins until the formation of the Ratio Studiorum in 17th-century. Brazilian society is defined as baroque and the rhetoric arises as element essential in the elaboration of the social imaginary speeches and, occupying as an essencial element in the elaboration of discursese and social imaginaries, occupying the centre of controversies, about questions like reason and the faith, ethics and the politics, the nature of the Indian and African peoples, even over the own construction of the modern subject. In this context the vieira´s preaching discharges the functions of kerigma (preaching), didachê (education) and politics (action). The research consisted in a finicky reading over five of these sermons that were returned in the presence of different audiences. The pulpit was the cathedra where Vieira used his sermons as a manner of social mobilization that aimed not only teaching a determined knowledge of reality, but altering cruel situations like Indian and poor people slavery in his epoch. Education by Vieira consist in a tension between utopian hopes and urgencies of practice. The rhetorical tradition affirms the interdependence of technical ethics and politics aspects. To know is not enough is necessary to convince and to move, realizating passage from theorical to practical liverly. It presupposes still the preoccupation with the solidity of argumentation and of reasoning, a wide cultural formation, the requirement of a civic ethics and, mainly, the adequacy between content and the specifics of audience

Persistent luminescence behavior of materials doped with Eu2+ and Tb3+

In this work, the persistent luminescence mechanisms of Tb3+ (in CdSiO3) and Eu2+ (in BaAl2O4) based on solid experimental data are compared. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows the different nature of the inter- and intraconfigurational transitions for Eu2+ and Tb3+, respectively. The electron is the charge carrier in both mechanisms, implying the presence of electron acceptor defects. The preliminary structural analysis shows a free space in CdSiO3 able to accommodate interstitial oxide ions needed by charge compensation during the initial preparation. The subsequent annealing removes this oxide leaving behind an electron trap. Despite the low band gap energy for CdSiO3, determined with synchrotron radiation UV-VUV excitation spectroscopy of Tb3+, the persistent luminescence from Tb3+ is observed only with UV irradiation. The need of high excitation energy is due to the position of F-7(6) level deep below the bottom of the conduction band, as determined with the 4f(8)-> 4f(7)5d(1) and the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions. Finally, the persistent luminescence mechanisms are constructed and, despite the differences, the mechanisms for Tb3+ and Eu2+ proved to be rather similar. This similarity confirms the solidity of the interpretation of experimental data for the Eu2+ doped persistent luminescence materials and encourages the use of similar models for other persistent luminescence materials. The Man-Made Environment in Post-Stalinist Europe 1953-1968

This project looked at the various responses, both political and aesthetic, to the end of socialist realism and the return of pre-war modernism as a desirable ideal. It considered both the built environment and objects of daily use (furniture, radios, TV sets, etc.) in several countries of the region, including Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Romania, also comparing developments there with corresponding ones in the west. Among particular aspects considered were the effects of Kruschev's speech in December 1954 to workers in construction, machine-building and design industries, in which he argued against monumentalism and criticised both "classical architecture" and socialist realism. The team see the real issue in interpreting Eastern European architecture as its lack of a critical edge, since official discourses took the place of any form of criticism and architects sought to implement the "official line". Megastructures became increasingly popular from the 1960s onwards and in Romania, for instance, came to dominate the city in the late 1980s. Such structures proved an efficient way to control the environment in countries plagued by prefabrication and social housing, and the group see the exhibition of inflated concrete grids as perhaps the most important feature of Eastern European architecture in the 1960s and 1970s. They also point out the rarity of glass and steel architecture in the east, where the preferred material was concrete, a material seen as "revolutionary" as it was the product of heavy industry and was grey, i.e. the workers' colour. Tactile elements were more important here than the visual elements favoured in the west, and a solidity more in line with the dominant ideology than the ephemeral qualities of glass.
