Particles having at least regions of at least one metal oxide having nano-sized grains are produced by providing particles of a material having an initial, nonequiaxed particle shape, prepg. a mixt. of these particles and at last one metal oxide precursor, and treating the mixt. such that the precursor reacts with the particles. The process can be a co-pptn. process, sol-gel synthesis, micro-emulsion method, surfactant-based process, or a process that uses polymers. Complex metal oxide nanoparticles are produced by (a) prepg. a soln. contg. metal cations, (b) mixing the soln. with a surfactant to form micelles within the soln., and (c) heating the micellar liq. to form metal oxide and to remove the surfactant. The formed metal oxide particles have essentially the same morphol. (particle size and shape) as the initial morphol. of the material particles provided. [on SciFinder(R)]

Novel profluorescent mono- and bis-isoindoline nitroxides linked to naphthalimide and perylene diimide structural cores are described. These nitroxide-fluorophore probes display strongly suppressed fluorescence in comparison to their corresponding non-radical diamagnetic methoxyamine derivs. The perylene-based probe possessing two isoindoline systems tethered through ethynyl linkages was shown to be the most photostable in soln., demonstrating significantly enhanced longevity over the 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene fluorophore used in previous profluorescent nitroxide probes.

Cellulose is dissolved in an ionic liq. without derivatization, and is regenerated in a range of structural forms without requiring the use of harmful or volatile org. solvents. Cellulose soly. and the soln. properties can be controlled by the selection of the ionic liq. constituents, with small cations and halide or pseudohalide anions favoring soln.; dissoln. can be aided by irradn. An ionic liq., [C4mim]Cl, proved to be the best for dissolving cellulose. [on SciFinder(R)]

The process involves encapsulation or immobilization of the active solid substance in a cellulose framework by regenerating cellulose dissolved in an ionic liq. solvent in a regenerating soln. The active substance can be initially present in the ionic liq. or in the regenerating solvent either as a soln. or dispersion. The invention is applicable to mol. encapsulation and to entrapping of larger particles including enzymes, nanoparticles and macroscopic components, and to the formation of bulk materials with a wide range of morphol. forms. Thus, carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (I) encapsulated in a cellulose matrix was realized by adding I to a 10% soln. of cellulose in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (ionic liq.) under vigorous stirring and then removing the ionic liq. with water.
