As espécies da ictiofauna podem se distribuir no espaço e no tempo de maneira organizada, seguindo um padrão que pode ser percebido pela associação ou agrupamento das espécies e pela sua relação com determinados habitats. O número reduzido de estudos e o pequeno conhecimento da fauna aquática na Amazônia resultam em sub-estimativas dos impactos na ictiofauna de igarapés. A Região Bragantina, no nordeste paraense, é tida como um exemplo de fronteira agrícola antiga na Amazônia. A agricultura familiar é expressiva na área, sendo as principais culturas milho, caupi e mandioca, e cultivos semi-perenes, como maracujá e pimenta-do-reino. Estas áreas de produção familiar constituem hoje importantes elementos da paisagem, podendo ocasionar à degradação dos solos e do ecossistema aquático. Nesse contexto, um estudo foi realizado nos anos de 2006 e 2007 em três igarapés situados nessa região: Cumaru, São João e Pachibá. Foram coletados 2.117 peixes, distribuídos em sete ordens, 13 famílias, 27 gêneros e 43 espécies. A espécie mais abundante em todas as amostras coletadas foi Hypessobrycon heterorhabudus, com 337 indivíduos, seguido por Bryconops caudomaculatus, com 326 indivíduos. A riqueza de espécies foi maior num trecho do Pachibá (IGPA-B), com 21 espécies. O Índice de Dominância de Simpson mostrou o valor mais alto no trecho B do igarapé Cumaru, enquanto o Índice de Diversidade de Shannon revelou que o IGP A-B possuiu a maior diversidade. Iguanodectes spirulus foi a espécie amostrada com mais constância, e ocorreu em 50% das amostras. A similaridade entre os ambientes revelou que a distribuição das espécies seguiu a um padrão longitudinal ao invés de um padrão geográfico. O uso da terra, em especial a agricultura familiar não influenciou na estrutura das comunidades de peixes, uma vez que a baixa intensificação dessa atividade ainda permite certa integralidade do ecossistema aquático. Porém, com uma maior intensificação e ampliação futura desses sistemas de produção não se sabe qual será a resposta desse ecossistema.

There are many situations where input feature vectors are incomplete and methods to tackle the problem have been studied for a long time. A commonly used procedure is to replace each missing value with an imputation. This paper presents a method to perform categorical missing data imputation from numerical and categorical variables. The imputations are based on Simpson’s fuzzy min-max neural networks where the input variables for learning and classification are just numerical. The proposed method extends the input to categorical variables by introducing new fuzzy sets, a new operation and a new architecture. The procedure is tested and compared with others using opinion poll data.

Objective: Mitral repair is increasingly performed in asymptomatic mitral regurgitation (MR). Previous work showed that pre-operative documentation of loss of contractile reserve (Cr) by exercise echo (ExE) may predict LV dysfunction early after repair. We sought the value of Cr in predicting late post-op LV dysfunction and clinical outcome. Methods: Pre-op ExE was performed in 41 pts with isolated MR without coronary disease undergoing repair. LV end-systolic and end-diastolic volumes were measured at rest and post-stress and EF was calculated using modified Simpson’s rule. Intact Cr was defined by >4% increment of stress compared with rest EF. During follow up (3±1 years), EF was serially assessed and occurrence of cardiac events was documented. Introduction - Monocytes, with 3 different subsets, are implicated in the initiation and progression of the atherosclerotic plaque contributing to plaque instability and rupture. Mon1 are the “classical” monocytes with inflammatory action, whilst Mon3 are considered reparative with fibroblast deposition ability. The function of the newly described Mon2 subset is yet to be fully described. In PCI era, fewer patients have globally reduced left ventricular ejection fraction post infarction, hence the importance of studying regional wall motion abnormalities and deformation at segmental levels using longitudinal strain. Little is known of the role for the 3 monocyte subpopulations in determining global strain in ST elevation myocardial infarction patients (STEMI). Conclusion In patients with normal or mildly impaired EF post infarction, higher counts of Mon1 and Mon2 are correlated with GLS within 7 days and at 6 months of remodelling post infarction. Adverse clinical outcomes in patients with reduced convalescent GLS were predicted with Mon1 and Mon2 suggestive of an inflammatory role for the newly identified Mon2 subpopulation. These results imply an important role for monocytes in myocardial healing when assessed by subclinical ventricular function indices. Methodology - STEMI patients (n = 101, mean age 64 ± 13 years; 69% male) treated with percutaneous revascularisation were recruited within 24 h post-infarction. Peripheral blood monocyte subpopulations were enumerated and characterised using flow cytometry after staining for CD14, CD16 and CCR2. Phenotypically, monocyte subpopulations are defined as: CD14++CD16-CCR2+ (Mon1), CD14++CD16+CCR2+ (Mon2) and CD14+CD16++CCR2- (Mon3). Phagocytic activity of monocytes was measured using flow cytometry and Ecoli commercial kit. Transthoracic 2D echocardiography was performed within 7 days and at 6 months post infarct to assess global longitudinal strain (GLS) via speckle tracking. MACE was defined as recurrent acute coronary syndrome and death. Results - STEMI patients with EF ≥50% by Simpson’s biplane (n = 52) had GLS assessed. Using multivariate regression analysis higher counts of Mon1 and Mon 2 and phagocytic activity of Mon2 were significantly associated with GLS (after adjusting for age, time to hospital presentation, and peak troponin levels) (Table 1). At 6 months, the convalescent GLS remained associated with higher counts of Mon1, Mon 2. At one year follow up, using multivariate Cox regression analysis, Mon1 and Mon2 counts were an independent predictor of MACE in patients with a reduced GLS (n = 21)

Runoff from an extreme storm on 22 March 2010 led, during the next 3 months, to the formation of a pronounced halocline and underlying hypoxia in the upper reaches of the microtidal Swan–Canning Estuary. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled between January 2010 and October 2011 at five sites along 10 km of this region. By mid-April, the number of species, total density, Simpson’s evenness index and taxonomic distinctness had declined markedly, crustaceans had disappeared and the densities of annelids and molluscs had declined slightly. These faunal attributes (except Simpson’s index) and species composition did not recover until after the end of the hypoxia. The survival of annelids and loss of crustaceans in this period reflects different sensitivities of these taxa to severe environmental stress. The results emphasise that microtidal estuaries with long residence times are highly vulnerable to the effects of environmental perturbations, particularly during warmer periods of the year.

We analysed the viscera of 321 red foxes collected over the last 30 years in 34 of the 47 provinces of peninsular Spain, and identified their helminth parasites. We measured parasite diversity in each sampled province using four diversity indices: Species richness, Marg a l e f’s species richness index, Shannon’s species diversity index, and inverse Simpson’s index. In order to find geographical, environmental, and/or human-related predictors of fox parasite diversity, we recorded 45 variables related to topography, climate, lithology, habitat heterogeneity, land use, spatial situation, human activity, sampling effort, and fox presence probability (obtained after environmental modelling of fox distribution). We then performed a stepwise linear regression of each diversity index on these variables, to find a minimal subset of statistically significant variables that account for the variation in each diversity index. We found that most parasite diversity indices increase with the mean distance to urban centres, or in other words, foxes in more rural provinces have a more diverse helminth fauna. Sampling effort and fox presence probability (probably related to fox density) also appeared as conditioning variables for some indices, as well as soil permeability (related with water availability). We then extrapolated the models to predict these fox parasite diversity indices in non-sampled provinces and have a view of their geographical trends.
