This study aimed to characterize the physical and chemical composition of ten items of arracacha grown in the municipality of São Manuel for the 2009 harvest. In the roots of the clones BGH (4560, 5741, 5744, 5746, 5747, 6414, 6513, 6525 and 7609) and the cultivar Amarela de Senador Amaral the characteristics evaluated were: color (L *, a * and b *) and moisture, ash, crude fiber, raw grease, protein, reducing sugars, total sugars and starch. After obtaining the data, an analysis was performed for the variance of test F and comparisons between the means made by the Tukey test at 5% probability. There was no significant difference to the results of luminosity (L *) while BGH 6414 and BGH 5744 showed the highest values for chroma and * BGH 5741, BGH 6414, BGH 7609, 'Amarela de Senador Amaral' BGH 5747 presented the highest chroma values for b *. Clones BGH 7609 and BGH 6414 showed significantly higher levels of dry matter and with the potential yield of agro-industrial processes it would be best suited in the form of frying. The materials that showed significantly larger amounts of ash were BGH 6525, BGH 5747, 'Amarela de Senador Amaral ", BGH 4560, BGH 5746, BGH 6513. Regarding the contents of fatty matter BGH 6525, BGH 5741 and BGH 5744 showed the highest levels. The results of BGH 7609 showed crude fiber significantly higher than the other materials tested, it can be used in diets composed of fibers. BGH 4560 and cultivar had the highest crude protein. BGH 5741 showed the lowest reducing sugar content among the clones, but not significantly different from results found for the cultivar. All clones showed total sugar levels were higher in the cultivar, which may have more flavor. BGH 5741, BGH 5746, BGH 6525 and BGH 6513 showed significantly higher starch content than the cultivar Amarela de Senador Amaral. From these results we conclude that the clones have similar color characteristics, and are potentially a nutritionally adequate substitute for the cultivar.

Objectives: To identify people affected by leprosy with impairments after completing multidrug therapy for leprosy, and to assess their limitations in conducting daily activities by applying the Screening of Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness (SALSA) scale. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed of all residents of a medium-sized city who were treated for leprosy from 1998 to 2006. A specific questionnaire was applied to obtain general and clinical data and the SALSA scale was used to assess limitations in activities. Impairments were assessed using the 'World Health Organization leprosy disability grading system' (WHO-DG). Findings: Of the 335 people affected by leprosy treated in the period, 223 (62.1%) were located and interviewed. A total of 51.6% were female with a mean age of 54 years (SD +/- 15.72) and 67.9% had up to 6 years formal education. The borderline form predominated among interviewees (39.9%) and 54.3% suffer from associated diseases with hypertension (29.1%) and diabetes (10.3%) being the most common. Pain was reported by 54.7% of interviewees. By multiple logistic regression analysis, associations were found between limitations in activities and being female (P < 0.025), family income <= 3 minimum wages (P-value < 0.003), reports of major lesions (P-value < 0.004), pain (P-value < 0.001), associated diseases (P-value < 0.023) and the WHO-DG (P-value < 0.001). Disabilities, as identified using the WHO-DG, were less common (32%) than limitations in activities as evaluated by the SALSA scale (57.8%). Conclusion: Limitations in activities proved to be common in people affected by leprosy and were. associated with low income, being female, reported major lesions, disability, disease and pain.

Stray light contamination reduces considerably the precision of photometric of faint stars for low altitude spaceborne observatories. When measuring faint objects, the necessity of coping with stray light contamination arises in order to avoid systematic impacts on low signal-to-noise images. Stray light contamination can be represented by a flat offset in CCD data. Mitigation techniques begin by a comprehensive study during the design phase, followed by the use of target pointing optimisation and post-processing methods. We present a code that aims at simulating the stray-light contamination in low-Earth orbit coming from reflexion of solar light by the Earth. StrAy Light SimulAtor (SALSA) is a tool intended to be used at an early stage as a tool to evaluate the effective visible region in the sky and, therefore to optimise the observation sequence. SALSA can compute Earth stray light contamination for significant periods of time allowing missionwide parameters to be optimised (e.g. impose constraints on the point source transmission function (PST) and/or on the altitude of the satellite). It can also be used to study the behaviour of the stray light at different seasons or latitudes. Given the position of the satellite with respect to the Earth and the Sun, SALSA computes the stray light at the entrance of the telescope following a geometrical technique. After characterising the illuminated region of the Earth, the portion of illuminated Earth that affects the satellite is calculated. Then, the flux of reflected solar photons is evaluated at the entrance of the telescope. Using the PST of the instrument, the final stray light contamination at the detector is calculated. The analysis tools include time series analysis of the contamination, evaluation of the sky coverage and an objects visibility predictor. Effects of the South Atlantic Anomaly and of any shutdown periods of the instrument can be added. Several designs or mission concepts can be easily tested and compared. The code is not thought as a stand-alone mission designer. Its mandatory inputs are a time series describing the trajectory of the satellite and the characteristics of the instrument. This software suite has been applied to the design and analysis of CHEOPS (CHaracterizing ExOPlanet Satellite). This mission requires very high precision photometry to detect very shallow transits of exoplanets. Different altitudes and characteristics of the detector have been studied in order to find the best parameters, that reduce the effect of contamination. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
