The taxonomic position of the endemic New Zealand bat genus Mystacina has vexed systematists ever since its erection in 1843. Over the years the genus has been linked with many microchiropteran families and superfamilies. Most recent classifications place it in the Vespertilionoidea, although some immunological evidence links it with the Noctilionoidea (=Phyllostomoidea). We have sequenced 402 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene for M. tuberculata (Gray in Dieffenbach, 1843), and using both our own and published DNA sequences for taxa in both superfamilies, we applied different tree reconstruction methods to find the appropriate phylogeny and different methods of estimating confidence in the parts of the tree. All methods strongly support the classification of Mystacina in the Noctilionoidea. Spectral analysis suggests that parsimony analysis may be misleading for Mystacina's precise placement within the Noctilionoidea because of its long terminal branch. Analyses not susceptible to long-branch attraction suggest that the Mystacinidae is a sister family to the Phyllostomidae. Dating the divergence times between the different taxa suggests that the extant chiropteran families radiated around and shortly after the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary. We discuss the biogeographical implications of classifying Mystacina within the Noctilionoidea and contrast our result with those classifications placing Mystacina in the Vespertilionoidea, concluding that evidence for the latter is weak.

Circular shortest paths represent a powerful methodology for image segmentation. The circularity condition ensures that the contour found by the algorithm is closed, a natural requirement for regular objects. Several implementations have been proposed in the past that either promise closure with high probability or ensure closure strictly, but with a mild computational efficiency handicap. Circularity can be viewed as a priori information that helps recover the correct object contour. Our "observation" is that circularity is only one among many possible constraints that can be imposed on shortest paths to guide them to a desirable solution. In this contribution, we illustrate this opportunity under a volume constraint but the concept is generally applicable. We also describe several adornments to the circular shortest path algorithm that proved useful in applications. © 2011 IEEE.

In response to the Travelsafe Committee Report No. 51 – report on the inquiry into Automatic Plate Recognition Technology – it was recommended that the Queensland Police Service continue to trial the deployment of ANPR technology for traffic enforcement work and to evaluate the road safety impacts and operational effectiveness of the technology. As such, the purpose of this report is to provide an independent evaluation of a trial of ANPR that was conducted by a project team within the State Traffic Support Branch of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and provide recommendations as to the applicability and usability of the technology for use throughout Queensland...

In 2005, Ginger Myles and Hongxia Jin proposed a software watermarking scheme based on converting jump instructions or unconditional branch statements (UBSs) by calls to a fingerprint branch function (FBF) that computes the correct target address of the UBS as a function of the generated fingerprint and integrity check. If the program is tampered with, the fingerprint and integrity checks change and the target address will not be computed correctly. In this paper, we present an attack based on tracking stack pointer modifications to break the scheme and provide implementation details. The key element of the attack is to remove the fingerprint and integrity check generating code from the program after disassociating the target address from the fingerprint and integrity value. Using the debugging tools that give vast control to the attacker to track stack pointer operations, we perform both subtractive and watermark replacement attacks. The major steps in the attack are automated resulting in a fast and low-cost attack.

A branch and bound type algorithm is presented in this paper to the problem of finding a transportation schedule which minimises the total transportation cost, where the transportation cost over each route is assumed to be a piecewice linear continuous convex function with increasing slopes. The algorithm is an extension of the work done by Balachandran and Perry, in which the transportation cost over each route is assumed to beapiecewise linear discontinuous function with decreasing slopes. A numerical example is solved illustrating the algorithm.

Vialaea minutella was consistently isolated from infected mango trees showing branch dieback symptoms in northern Queensland. The fungus was identified by morphology and confirmed with molecular sequence data. This is the first report of V. minutella in Australia. The systematic position of Vialaea was confirmed to be in the Xylariales based on reconstructed LSU sequence data.

the leopard tree Caesalpinia ferrea (Leguminosae) a native of eastern Brazil-some of the leader branches connect to and fuse with neighbouring branches of the same tree. The bridge initials project out as pegs or protuberances and apparently extend in a coordinated manner, connecting branches up to 4 ft apart. The fusion of two branches of the same tree implies intra-plant communication involving signaling factor(s). The bridges resemble fusions between hyphae in a fungal colony. Whereas hyphal fusions are common and the process is apparently completed in <1 h, branch fusions in C. ferrea tree are limited and a slow process, apparently requiring several months to years to complete. Branch fusions in C. ferrea are in accord with Claus Mattheck's analysis that tree branches actually seek contact rather than avoid contacts.

We generalize the Nozieres-Schmitt-Rink method to study the repulsive Fermi gas in the absence of molecule formation, i.e., in the so-called ``upper branch.'' We find that the system remains stable except close to resonance at sufficiently low temperatures. With increasing scattering length, the energy density of the system attains a maximum at a positive scattering length before resonance. This is shown to arise from Pauli blocking which causes the bound states of fermion pairs of different momenta to disappear at different scattering lengths. At the point of maximum energy, the compressibility of the system is substantially reduced, leading to a sizable uniform density core in a trapped gas. The change in spin susceptibility with increasing scattering length is moderate and does not indicate any magnetic instability. These features should also manifest in Fermi gases with unequal masses and/or spin populations.

Space shift keying (SSK) is an attractive modulation technique for multi-antenna communications. In SSK, only one among the available transmit antennas is activated during one channel use, and the index of the chosen transmit antenna conveys information. In this paper, we analyze the performance of SSK in multi-hop, multi-branch cooperative relaying systems. We consider the decode-and-forward relaying protocol, where a relay forwards the decoded symbol if it decodes the symbol correctly from the received signal. We derive closed-form expressions for the end-to-end bit error rate of SSK in this system. Analytical and simulation results match very well.

This study owes its inception to the wisdom and experience of the staff of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center who, after several decades of surveys in the New York Bight, recognized a unique opportunity to capitalize on the decision to stop ocean dumping of sewage sludge and designed an innovative field study to evaluate effects on living marine resources and their habitats. For decades ocean dumping was viewed as a cheap and effective means for disposal of wastes generated by urbanized coastal areas. Even after the 12-mile site was closed, sewage sludge continued to be dumped at Deepwater Dumpsite 106. The 6-mile site off the NewJersey coast is still used as a dumpsite for dredged material from New York Harbor areas. Discussions continue on the propriety of using the deep ocean spaces for disposal of a variety of material including low level radioactive wastes. Consequently, managers are still faced with critical decisions in this area. It is to be hoped that the results from the 12-mile study will provide the necessary information on which these managers can evaluate future risks associated with ocean waste disposal. The Los Angeles Harbor at San Pedro with its natural advantages, and the big development of these now underway, will very soon be the key to the traffic routes of Southern California. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railway company realizing this and, not wishing to be caught asleep, has planned to build a line from El Segundo to the harbor. The developments of the harbor are not the only developments taking place in these localities and the proposed new line is intended to include these also.

A new 2-D quality-guided phase-unwrapping algorithm, based on the placement of the branch cuts, is presented. Its framework consists of branch cut placing guided by an original quality map and reliability ordering performed on a final quality map. To improve the noise immunity of the new algorithm, a new quality map, which is used as the original quality map to guide the placement of the branch cuts, is proposed. After a complete description of the algorithm and the quality map, several wrapped images are used to examine the effectiveness of the algorithm. Computer simulation and experimental results make it clear that the proposed algorithm works effectively even when a wrapped phase map contains error sources, such as phase discontinuities, noise, and undersampling.
