Dynamics of phytoplankton associations in three reservoirs in northeastern Brazil assessed using Reynolds' theory

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of seasonality on the behavior of phytoplankton associations in eutrophic reservoirs with different depths in northeastern Brazil. Five collections were carried out at each of the reservoirs at two depths (0.1 m and near the sediment) at three-month intervals in each season (dry and rainy). The phytoplankton samples were preserved in Lugol's solution and quantified under an inverted microscope for the determination of density values, which were subsequently converted to biomass values based on cellular biovolume and classified in phytoplankton associations. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, water transparency, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, orthophosphate and total nitrogen. The data were investigated using canonical correspondence analysis. The influence of seasonality on the dynamics of the phytoplankton community was lesser in the deeper reservoirs. Depth affected the behavior of the algal associations. Variation in light availability was a determinant of changes in the phytoplankton structure. Urosolenia and Anabaena associations were more abundant in shallow ecosystems with a larger eutrophic zone, whereas the Microcystis association was more related to deep ecosystems with adequate availability of nutrients. The distribution of Cyclotella, Geitlerinema, Planktothrix, Pseudanabaena and Cylindrospermopsis associations was different from that seen in subtropical regions and the substitution of these associations was related to a reduction in the eutrophic zone rather than the mixture zone. URANS calculations for smooth circular cylinder flow in a wide range of Reynolds Numbers: solution verification and validation

The flow around circular smooth fixed cylinder in a large range of Reynolds numbers is considered in this paper. In order to investigate this canonical case, we perform CFD calculations and apply verification & validation (V&V) procedures to draw conclusions regarding numerical error and, afterwards, assess the modeling errors and capabilities of this (U)RANS method to solve the problem. Eight Reynolds numbers between Re = 10 and Re 5 x 10(5) will be presented with, at least, four geometrically similar grids and five discretization in time for each case (when unsteady), together with strict control of iterative and round-off errors, allowing a consistent verification analysis with uncertainty estimation. Two-dimensional RANS, steady or unsteady, laminar or turbulent calculations are performed. The original 1994 k - omega SST turbulence model by Menter is used to model turbulence. Hot wire manufacturing and resolution effects in high Reynolds number flows

Lo studio della turbolenza è di fondamentale importanza non solo per la fluidodinamica teorica ma anche perchè viene riscontrata in una moltitudine di problemi di interesse ingegneristico. All'aumentare del numero di Reynolds, le scale caratteristiche tendono a ridurre le loro dimensioni assolute. Nella fluidodinamica sperimentale già da lungo tempo si è affermata l'anemometria a filo caldo, grazie ad ottime caratteristiche di risoluzione spaziale e temporale. Questa tecnica, caratterizzata da un basso costo e da una relativa semplicità, rende possibile la realizzazione di sensori di tipo artigianale, che hanno il vantaggio di poter essere relizzati in dimensioni inferiori. Nonostante l'ottima risoluzione spaziale degli hot-wire, infatti, si può verificare, ad alto numero di Reynolds, che le dimensioni dell'elemento sensibile siano superiori a quelle delle piccole scale. Questo impedisce al sensore di risolvere correttamente le strutture più piccole. Per questa tesi di laurea è stato allestito un laboratorio per la costruzione di sensori a filo caldo con filo di platino. Sono in questo modo stati realizzati diversi sensori dalle dimensioni caratteristiche inferiori a quelle dei sensori disponibili commercialmente. I sensori ottenuti sono quindi stati testati in un getto turbolento, dapprima confrontandone la risposta con un sensore di tipo commerciale, per verificarne il corretto funzionamento. In seguito si sono eseguite misure più specifiche e limitate ad alcune particolari zone all'interno del campo di moto, dove è probabile riscontrare effetti di risoluzione spaziale. Sono stati analizzati gli effetti della dimensione fisica del sensore sui momenti statistici centrali, sugli spettri di velocità e sulle funzioni di densità di probabilità.

Public Drinking in the Early Modern World: Voices from the Tavern, 1500-1800

Until recently the role of the public drinking house has been approached from elitist, folkloric and anecdotal perspectives. The work of a new generation of social historians, however, has raised the tavern’s profile in the academic consciousness and confirmed its position within the mainstream of social and cultural history. It is now recognized that an understanding of the centrality of public drinking to the development of both elite and popular culture is vital to studies of social behaviour. The study of taverns has also been at the forefront of emerging interest in the history of consumption and material culture, and has contributed to a richer understanding of economic history. Constructions of gender and identity are also visible through research into the patterns of behaviour and discourse in and around the public house. This four-volume reset edition presents a wide-ranging collection of primary sources which uncover the language and behaviour of local and state authorities, of peasants and town-dwellers, and of drinking companions and irate wives. The documents are translated and set in their social and historical context, providing a multidisciplinary collection that will be of great importance to scholars of all areas of social and cultural history of the early modern period. The vast majority of this material is published here for the first time, ensuring that the collection will open up new avenues of research. Volume 1 draws heavily from the Parisian police archives and includes inspectors’ reports, complaints by the general public and details of court cases to build a picture of drinking in early modern France. Volumes 2 and 3 address public drinking in the Holy Roman Empire through a variety of chronicles, civic ordinances, court records, travel reports and surveys of public houses. Volume 4 locates taverns within a broader analysis of America’s public houses, drawing on visual material as well as journal entries, business reports and newspaper articles. Each volume is accompanied by editorial introductions and is annotated to provide readers with a high-quality resource of scholarly material.

Reynolds-stress turbulence model in the KIVA code for engine simulation

A Reynolds-Stress Turbulence Model has been incorporated with success into the KIVA code, a computational fluid dynamics hydrocode for three-dimensional simulation of fluid flow in engines. The newly implemented Reynolds-stress turbulence model greatly improves the robustness of KIVA, which in its original version has only eddy-viscosity turbulence models. Validation of the Reynolds-stress turbulence model is accomplished by conducting pipe-flow and channel-flow simulations, and comparing the computed results with experimental and direct numerical simulation data. Flows in engines of various geometry and operating conditions are calculated using the model, to study the complex flow fields as well as confirm the model’s validity. Results show that the Reynolds-stress turbulence model is able to resolve flow details such as swirl and recirculation bubbles. The model is proven to be an appropriate choice for engine simulations, with consistency and robustness, while requiring relatively low computational effort.

In der vorliegenden Besprechung von Peter Paul Rubens’ Lehrschrift De imitatione statuarum (um 1610) und Sir Joshua Reynolds’ Discourse on Sculpture (1780) wird der Versuch unternommen, das Lehrgerüst der Grammatik als ein gemeinsames Referenzmodell herauszuarbeiten und die Position dieser beiden Malergrößen innerhalb der neuzeitlichen Kunsttheorie genauer zu verorten. Hierbei werden besonders die medienspezifischen Eigenschaften von Skulptur im Verhältnis zur Malerei diskutiert, die Maler bei der Nachahmung von antiker Skulptur zu beachten haben.

Aerodynamic study of airfoils geometric imperfections at low Reynolds number

The interest of this study is based on the observation that some manufacturing processes of various vehicles wings, such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or blades, such as wind turbine blades, or other devices that use aerodynamic profiles, produce imperfections in the leading edge or open trailing edge with bigger thickness than original airfoil, because, for example, they are manufactured in two parts, top surface and bottom surface and subsequently joined. In this last step might appear a sliding between the top surface and the bottom surface having a small step on the leading edge or a small thickness gain can occur on the trailing edge. Normally these imperfections are corrected through a refill and/or sanding processes using many hours of manual labor. Therefore the initial objective of this research is to determine the level of influence in the aerodynamic characteristics at low Reynolds numbers (Lissaman, 1981, Carmichael, 1981, Nagamatsu and Cuche, 1981, Schmitz, 1957, Cebeci, 1989, Mueller and Batill, 1982) of these imperfections in the manufacture, and determine whether there may be a value for which it would not be necessary to correct them
