When children are involved in design and technology activities, they are able to create solutions to problems, often in new and innovative ways. There have been few studies which have investigated how children work when undertaking technological activities and even fewer which have focused on children's thinking or knowledge while they have been involved in the production of a technological artifact. This paper reports on a research project involving 3 school, 4 classes and 80 children. The project focused on children's language, thinking and creativity while they designed and constructed a recycling device using recycled materials. Using children's written responses to key questions, we can highlight some of their thinking, knowledge and problem-solving strategies. It was clear from the children's responses that aspects of investigation, design, producation and evaluation were evident across all three sites. Findings on children's creativity and language were presented at previous Technology Education Research Conferences (TERC).

In this work we explore and recreate the architecture of the McClelland Gallery by reconstructing the facade as a tyre brickwall. To this we added a second 'protective' skin. At once reaffirming and corrupting the tyres stand in their own right as a multiplied form. The work acts as a monument to car travel, excess and modernist form. In Bunker-de-bunk 2012 we are appropriating both the recycling industry’s method for stacking tyres on trucks while exploiting the ingenuity of tyre recycling in the construction of 'earthship' houses and the edifying beauty of the patterns created in the process.

The tyre walls also critique the pervading architectural authority of the modernist gallery. The structure of the original McClelland building and its geometry of multiple planes and intersected partitions is corrupted and masked by the façade of tyres. We barricade the gallery in an extra layer of tyres as if the building itself were under siege. Bunker-de-bunk 2012 plays on the paranoia of modern institutions and questions the belief systems evident in the formal language of art. It is superstition and faith that brings cultural institutions into being; we all agree to believe.

In Bunker-de-bunk 2012 we appropriate both the recycling industry's method for stacking tyres on trucks while exploiting the ingenuity of tyre recycling in the construction of earthship houses and the edifying beauty of the patterns created in the process.

The process of recycling has been stimulated by the markets for several reasons, mainly on economical and environmental. Several products have been developed from recycled materials that already exist as well as several residues have been studied in different forms of applications. The greater majority of the applications for thermal insulation in the domestic, commercial and industrial systems have been elaborated in the temperature ranges between low to medium reaching up to 180oC. Many materials such as glass wool, rock wool, polystyrene are being used which are aggressive to the environment. Such materials in spite of the effectiveness in the retention of heat flow, they cost more and when discarded take several years to be absorbed by the nature. This way, in order to adapt to a world politics concerning the preservation of the environment, the present study was intended to develop a material composed of natural/biodegradable materials and industrial residues. The development of such a product in the form of a composite material based on tyre scrapes and latex for thermal insulation is presented in this research work. Thermal and physical properties of the tire scrapes as well as latex were studied in order to use them as raw materials for the manufacture of the intended composite to be applied as a thermal insulator in hot and cold systems varying between 0ºC and 200oC, respectively. Composite blankets were manufactured manually, in weight proportions of 1:1 (50:50%); 1:2 (33:67%) and 2:1 (67:33%) (tire scrapes: latex) respectively. Physical, mechanical and thermal properties of the composites were analyzed to obtain data about the viability of using the composite as a thermal insulator. The analyses carried out were based on standards ABNT, ASTM and UL. The maximum temperature obtained for the composite as a thermal insulator was 200ºC, which meets the range of applications that could be used as a thermal insulator in domestic as well as industrial purposes. The experimental results prove that the composite can be used as a thermal insulator on heated or cooled surface

It is presented a solar cooker made with a parabolic reflector composed by a composite material. For this purpose, it was utilized a cast concrete with a parabolic profile obtained by means of modeling. It will be demonstrated the manufacturing process and settings, as well as tests results, in order to determine the contact temperature and cooking time of some foods. This solar cooker presents the following main characteristics: the concentration method, low cost and easy manufacturing process. It was performed by employing recycled materials such as cement, plaster, crushed polystyrene and wheels. The captation area measures 1 square meter and its parabole was covered with a mirrors measuring 25 cm2. A temperature higher than 650°C was obtained. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the cooking viability for several type of foods such as beans, potatoes, rice, yams and pasta can be used in two meals for a family of four. In addition, the advantages of this cooker were analysed in comparison with others described in literature as well as those operating on gas. Especially in Northeast of Brazil, where there is a potential for solar energy, this prototype is an important tool, because it avoids not only desertification, but also pollutants from burning firewoods which cause ecological imbalance

Automotive heat shields are usually composed of two metal sheets enclosing an insulating material with a paper-like texture that contains refractory ceramic particles. This article discusses the results achieved by recycling the scrap automotive insulation that is discarded in landfills, using the same concept as paper recycling. For comparison with the original product, tests of thickness, bulk density, weight loss on ignition, tensile strength, compressibility, and recovery were performed on recycled materials produced in a so-called "manual" process (involving little automation and performed in adapted facilities) without pressing, and pressed once, twice, and four times. Materials recycled in a so-called "industrial" process (in a paper recycling plant) without pressing, and pressed once were also tested. The recycled materials can be considered approved with respect to the main requirement, thermal insulation, since they dissipated the under-hood temperature by more than 300 A degrees C (like the original product). Like the heat insulation tests, the thermogravimetric analysis suggested that the recycled materials showed higher stability than the original product. Thermogravimetric, microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses indicated that the structural and compositional characteristics of the original product were preserved after recycling.

What municipal recycling rate is socially optimal? One credible answer would consider the recycling rate that minimizes the overall social costs of managing municipal waste. Such social costs are comprised of all budgetary costs and revenues associated with operating municipal waste and recycling programs, all costs to recycling households associated with preparing and storing recyclable materials for collection, all external disposal costs associated with waste disposed at landfills or incinerators, and all external benefits associated with the provision of recycled materials that foster environmentally efficient production processes. This paper discusses how to estimate these four components of social cost to then estimate the optimal recycling rate. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

SUMMARY The objective of this Project is twofold. On the one hand, the acoustic conditioning of a school is developed in order to achieve a better teaching performance. For this purpose, the speech intelligibility is enhanced and the noise in the different rooms is reduced. On the other hand, the economic costs and environmental impact are reduced by using recycled materials or materials found in the local area, reducing as much as possible the use of imported materials. The appropriate acoustic parameters will be determined from the evaluation of the acoustic demands of the school. The main problems in these environments are the noise transmission between rooms as well as a high reverberation time. These will cause problems with the speech transmission, which is of great importance for educational purposes. Furthermore, the acoustic parameters and requirements are taken from a real and specific context. The place chosen for the research is Santiago, Chile. It is remarkable that in this country there is no national legislation that can be applied to such places, therefore International Standards are considered to evaluate the acoustic insulation and conditioning. The acoustic solutions considered in this project come from recycled materials existing on the domestic market. The decision aims to reduce the environmental impact, promoting environmentally sustainable development as a response to the economic growth and the maintenance of resources in a developing country. Finally, a simulation at some different areas of the school is carried out, comparing the behaviour before and after the proposed acoustic solutions. The software used for the simulations is EASE (Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers).

ABSTRACT This thesis deals with the design and development of a new facade construction material using recycled plastic (rubber pellets from used tires) for processing. The use of recycled materials for the development of new building materials, today is an added value which contributes both to the reduction of toxic waste, as well as the processing of products of good quality. The research derives from the need to understand what a plastic is, how they are produced, what the factors that allowed recycling are and what properties can be exploited to develop a new building material. In the prior art, were analyzed plastic aspects related to its composition, properties, typologies, production, consumption, European and Spanish legislation, recycling and energy recovery. To further analyze the materials developed from recycled plastics, from textiles to construction elements. With the knowledge gained from this previous analysis, we designed an experimental approach using recycled rubber and plaster derivatives as aggregates in a polymeric resin matrix reinforced with natural and synthetic fibers. The results obtained in physical and thermal testing, with the elements produced, showed that the material has excellent tensile strength and a low thermal conductivity. This research will serve as a precedent for the development of new materials and building systems, using recycled plastic aggregates in the manufacturing processes. Since it was found the enormous potential, creating new materials, and helping reduce environmental pollution. ABSTRACT This research puts forth the radical hypothesis of how to inhabit the desert in a sustainable way, using a pragmatic and experimental approach based on progress. The justification for this resides in the fact that there are 2,000 million people in the world living in desert environments, 80% of them in developing countries. Forty percent of the earth’s surface is under threat of desertification, affecting 37% of the world population and with 12 million hectares being lost each year. And finally, the desert is considered as an attractive environment and therefore, with great potential. The content of the research is structured in three main sections: positioning, observation and action: As a point of departure, sustainability is defined, proposing a new framework where architecture is incorporated as one of the main pillars. Then, the criteria for evaluating sustainability are established. These provide a system of indicators, which incorporate parameters based on the specific circumstances of the oasis. Methodologies and existing sustainable development projects that represent the state-of-the-art are analyzed, discussing the difficulty of adapting them to conditions of oases. A methodology that modifies strategic concepts is developed, whereby the catalyst is social action, and strategies are developed based on low-cost, self-built, and feasible implementation systems. The specific case study lies in the extreme conditions in the oasis of M'hamid, where a process of decay and neglect is evident. This deterioration is due to an accumulation of external and internal circumstances, and of natural and anthropogenic factors that affect the oasis, leading to extreme weather conditions and a shortage of both natural and artificial resources. Factors include; climate change, drought, changes in water policies, the threat of desertification, social conflicts, ecological imbalance, economic shortage, the energy crisis, architectural obsolescence, destruction of built heritage, and misunderstood new architecture. It is important to note the extremely limited graphic information about the area has led me to produce an extensive archive of maps and drawings, many developed by direct observation, that contribute to the research. The case study analysis of the oasis of M'hamid examines the resources available and the latent potential to slow the prevailing trend towards deterioration. The initial drawings of contextual appropriation and critical analysis result in maps and diagrams of action, which are formed by a system of objects and the definition of strategies. These can be thought of as understanding or “deconstructing” the past to reconstruct the future. Alternative approaches defined in seven strategies for action are based on three fields related to the ecosystem: ecological, socioeconomic and architectural. Thus, the thesis defends architectural action to promote sustainable development, based on three elements: - The creation of "techno-artisans", to make use of energy resources - Architectural changes, to reformulate habitat in terms of energy efficiency and progress - And the promotion of everyday actions, to redefine social relations, creating cooperative and collaborative environments. In the ecological field, I propose anti-desertification actions such as; tree incubators, alternative water management systems(such as solid rain),; strategies to empower the agricultural production, energy from low-cost systems made out from recycled materials(such as solar panels from PET bottles or wind turbine from bicycle wheels). In the socioeconomic sphere, I propose to implement new forms of social action and economic regeneration. Finally, within the urban and architectural field, I propose morphological changes to the existing architecture and a contemporary reinterpretation of the earth as a material that allows new geometries, creating petrified sand by microbiological processes or enhancing nature as an artistic and energy resource. This thesis is a starting point. It collects systems, strategies and experiences to serve as a stimulus or dynamic momentum for future sustainable development of the oasis, opening new avenues of research and experimentation.

Urban parks have long been valued for the environmental, social, and economic benefits they provide. Increasingly, parks are also being recognized as features important for sustainable city design. This Capstone Project will identify, compare, analyze, and discuss means for designing sustainable urban parks. Recommendations for designing sustainable urban parks, based on project results, include: 1) ensure park features will support high levels of human activity; 2) use gravel to construct park trails; 3) purchase playground structures made of recycled materials; 4) plant a high number of perennials in flowerbeds and other vegetated areas; 5) plant climate-appropriate plants in vegetated areas; 6) ensure parks have high levels of plant diversity; and 7) develop future studies further exploring sustainable park design.
