Lithium intercalation into double rare earth chromates was carried out. It was found that the compounds NaxLi1-xLa(CrO4)2 belong to the NaLa(CrO4)2 structural type and may be recommended as fast ionic conductors. At small values of x a third polymorphous modification of LiLa(CrO4)2 can be stabilized. Attempts to intercalate lithium into CsLa(CrO4)2 lead to collapse of the lamellar network with the formation of LaCrO4 and alkaline chromates. Ion exchange Li+/H+ data are consistent with these considerations. © 1994.

Corrosion inhibitors are an important method for minimizing corrosion; however traditional inhibitors such as chromates pose environmental problems. Rare earth metals provide an important, environmentally-friendly alternative. This book provides a comprehensive review of current research and examines how rare earth metals can be used to prevent corrosion and applied to protect metals in such industries as aerospace and construction. Chapter 1 begins by examining the important need to replace chromate, and then goes on to discuss the chemistry of the rare earth metals and their related compounds. Chapter 2 considers the techniques that can be used to identify corrosion inhibition mechanisms and to test the levels of protection offered to different metals by rare earth compounds. Subsequent chapters consider in more detail how rare earth elements can be used as corrosion inhibitors in different forms and for different metals. This includes discussion on the potential of rare earth elements for self-healing, tunable and multifunctional coatings. Finally, chapter 10 considers the cost and availability of the rare earths and the potential health and environmental risks associated with extracting them. The Gibbs energies of formation of MPt5 (MNd, Dy, Ho, Er) intermetallic compounds were determined in the temperature range 900–1100 K using the solid state cell Ta,M+MF3¦CaF2¦MPt5+Pt+MF3,Ta For M ≡ Sm, a mixture of Gd + GdF3 was used as the reference electrode. In the case of Eu, a mixture of Eu + EuF2 served as the reference electrode. The trifluorides of Sm and Eu are not stable in equilibrium with the metal. The fluoride phase coexisting with a SmPt5 + Pt mixture is SmF3, whereas EuF2 is the equilibrium phase in contact with EuPt5 + Pt. All the MPt5 compounds studied (except EuPt5) exhibit similar stability. Europium is divalent in the pure metal and trivalent in EuPt5. The energy required for the promotion of divalent Eu to the trivalent state accounts for the less negative Gibbs energy of formation of EuPt5. The enthalpies of formation of all the MPt5 compounds obtained in this study are in good agreement with Miedema's model.

A combination of linear polarisation resistance (LPR) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarisation (CPP) measurements demonstrated that the lanthanum-4 hydroxy cinnamate compound could inhibit both the cathodic and anodic corrosion reactions on mild steel surfaces exposed to 0.01 M NaCl solutions. However, the dominating response was shown to vary with inhibitor concentration. At the concentrations for which the highest level of protection was achieved, both REM-4 hydroxy cinnamate (REM being lanthanum and mischmetal) displayed a strong anodic behaviour for mild steel and their inhibition performance, including their resistance against localised attack, improved with time.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and modelling were carried out so as to propose a simple electrical model and correlate the extracted parameters to the inhibition mechanism put forward for REM-cinnamate based compounds. The results supported the high corrosion inhibition performance of the compounds as well as the build-up of a protective film with time. Based on a two-layer model the results suggested that the upper layer of the inhibitor film seemed to offer less resistance to the diffusion of electrochemically active species than the highly resistive inner layer at the film/metal interface.

Corrosion rate measurements based on weight loss (i.e., mild steel immersed for seven days in 0.01 M NaCl) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques have shown that even low concentrations (200 ppm) of cerium and lanthanum cinnamates are able to significantly inhibit corrosion. Of all the compounds investigated in this work Ce(4-methoxycinnamate)3· 2 H2O and La(4-methoxycinnamate)3· 2 H2O compounds exhibited the greatest inhibition and, in comparison with the component inhibitors, a synergy was clearly observed. The mechanism of corrosion inhibition was investigated using cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) measurements. The results suggest that La(4-nitrocinnamate)3· 2 H2O and Ce(4-methoxycinnamate)3· 2 H2O behave as mixed inhibitors and improve the resistance of steel against localized attack.

An electrochemically integrated multi-electrode array namely the wire beam electrode (WBE) has been used to characterize the behavior of cerium chloride (CeCl3) and lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) in inhibiting localized corrosion of AA2024-T3 and AA1100. CeCl3 has been found to inhibit AA2024-T3 corrosion in 0.005 M sodium chloride (NaCl) solution by suppressing galvanic corrosion activities and by creating a large number of insignificant anodes. It has also been shown to inhibit localized corrosion of AA1100 in 0.5 M NaCl solution by promoting the random distribution of minor anodes. LaCl3 has been found to inhibit localized corrosion of AA2024-T3 at 1000 ppm, although its efficiency dropped significantly when its concentration decreased to 500 ppm. The addition of CeCl3 and LaCl3 to corrosion testing cells at later stages was unable to effectively suppress existing corrosion anodes.

A series of rare earth 4-hydroxycinnamate compounds including Ce(4OHCin)3, La(4OHCin)3, and Pr(4OHCin)3 has been synthesized and evaluated as novel inhibitors for carbon dioxide corrosion of steel in CO2-saturated sodium chloride solutions. Electrochemical measurements and surface analysis have shown that these REM(4OHCin)3 compounds effectively inhibited CO2 corrosion by forming protective inhibiting deposits that shut down the active electrochemical corrosion sites on the steel surface. Inhibition efficiency was found to increase in the order Ce(4OHCin)3 < La(4OHCin)3 < Pr(4OHCin)3 and with increase in inhibitor concentration up to 0.63 mM. Detailed insights into corrosion inhibition mechanism of these compounds in carbon dioxide environment are also provided.
