Velocity and absorption tomograms are the two most common forms of presentation of radar tomographic data. However, mining personnel, geophysicists included, are often unfamiliar with radar velocity and absorption. In this paper, general formulae are introduced, relating velocity and attenuation coefficient to conductivity and dielectric constant. The formulae are valid for lossy media as well as high-resistivity materials. The transformation of velocity and absorption to conductivity and dielectric constant is illustrated via application of the formulae to radar tomograms from the Hellyer zinc-lead-silver mine, Tasmania, Australia. The resulting conductivity and dielectric constant tomograms constructed at Hellyer demonstrated the potential of radar tomography to delineate sulphide ore zones. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. 1 Previous studies have demonstrated that chronic pre-synaptic inhibition of transmitter release by morphine evokes a counter-adaptive response in the sympathetic nerve terminals that manifests itself as an increase in transmitter release during acute withdrawal. In the present study we examined the possibility that other pre-synaptically acting drugs such as clonidine also evoke a counter-adaptive response in the sympathetic nerve terminals. 2 In chronically saline treated (CST) preparations, clonidine (0.5 muM) completely abolished evoked transmitter release from sympathetic varicosities bathed in an extracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+](o)) of 2 mM. The inhibitory effect of clonidine was reduced by increasing [Ca2+](o) from 2 to 4 mM and the stimulation frequency from 0.1 to 1 Hz. 3 The nerve terminal impulse (NTI) was not affected by concentrations of clonidine that completely abolished evoked transmitter release. 4 Sympathetic varicosities developed a tolerance to clonidine (0.5 muM) following 7-9 days of chronic exposure to clonidine. 5 Acute withdrawal of preparations following chronic clonidine treatment (CCT) resulted in a significant (P

1 The effect of chronic morphine treatment (CMT) on sympathetic innervation of the mouse vas deferens and on alpha (2)-adrenoceptor mediated autoinhibition has been examined using intracellular recording of excitatory junction potentials (EJPs) and histochemistry. 2 In chronically saline treated (CST) preparations. morphine (1 muM) and the alpha (2)-adrenoceptor agonist (clonidine, 1 muM) decreased the mean amplitude of EJPs evoked with 0.03 Hz stimulation by 81+/-8% (n=16) and 92+/-6% (n=7) respectively. In CMT preparations, morphine (1 muM) and clonidine (1 muM) decreased mean EJP amplitude by 68+/-8% (n = 7) and 79+/-8% (n = 7) respectively. 3 When stimulating the sympathetic axons at 0.03 Hz. the mean EJP amplitude recorded from smooth muscles acutely withdrawn from CMT was four times greater than for CST smooth muscles (40.7+/-3.8 mV, n = 7 compared with 9.9+/-0.3 mV, n = 7). 4 Part of the increase in mean EJP amplitude following CMT was produced by a 31% increase in the density of sympathetic axons and varicosities innervating the smooth muscle. 5 Results from the present study indicate that the effectiveness of alpha (2)-adrenocrptor mediated autoinhibition is only slightly reduced in CMT preparations. Most of the cross tolerance which develops between morphine, clonidine and alpha (2)-adrenoceptor mediated autoinhibition occurs as a consequence of increased efficacy of neuromuscular transmission which is produced by an increase in the probability of transmitter release and an increase in the density of sympathetic innervation.

Three-dimensional (3D) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging via multiple-pass processing is an extension of interferometric SAR imaging. It exploits more than two flight passes to achieve a desired resolution in elevation. In this paper, a novel approach is developed to reconstruct a 3D space-borne SAR image with multiple-pass processing. It involves image registration, phase correction and elevational imaging. An image model matching is developed for multiple image registration, an eigenvector method is proposed for the phase correction and the elevational imaging is conducted using a Fourier transform or a super-resolution method for enhancement of elevational resolution. 3D SAR images are obtained by processing simulated data and real data from the first European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS-1) with the proposed approaches.

Resistively loaded helical antennas, used in the normal mode and horizontally polarised, are modelled using the moment method above typical lossy ground. The distributed resistive loading was adjusted to maintain a two octave bandwidth. The centre frequency of 1 m dipoles was reduced from 250 MHz for the straight resistive wire to 50 MHz for a helix of pitch 2.5 cm and diameter 5 cm. The reduction in efficiency required to maintain the bandwidth for this helix was 12 dB. This agrees reasonably with the theory for small antennas in free space. The results were also verified by comparing measurements performed on a monopole resistively loaded helical antenna in a watertank with the numerical model used elsewhere.

For ground penetrating radar (GPR), smaller antennas would provide considerable practical advantages. Some of which are: portability; ease of use; and higher spatial sampling. A theoretical comparison of the fundamental limits of a small electric field antenna and a small magnetic field antenna shows that the minimum Q constraints are identical. Furthermore, it is shown that only the small magnetic loop antenna can be constructed to approach, arbitrarily closely, the fundamental minimum Q limit. This is achieved with the addition of a high permeability material which reduces energy stored in the magnetic fields. This is of special interest to some GPR applications. For example, applications requiring synthetic aperture data collection would benefit from the increased spatial sampling offered by electrically smaller antennas. Low frequency applications may also benefit, in terms of reduced antenna dimensions, by the use of electrically small antennas. Under these circumstances, a magnetic type antenna should be considered in preference to the typical electric field antenna. Numerical modeling data supports this assertion.

This paper presents a novel phase correction technique for Passive Radar which uses targets of opportunity present in the target area as references. The proposed methodology is quite simple and enables the use of low cost hardware with independent oscillators for the reference and surveillance channels which can be geographically distributed. © 2014 IEEE.

This work presents the integration of obstacle detection and analysis capabilities in a coherent and advanced C&C framework allowing mixed-mode control in unmanned surface systems. The collision avoidance work has been successfully integrated in an operational autonomous surface vehicle and demonstrated in real operational conditions. We present the collision avoidance system, the ROAZ autonomous surface vehicle and the results obtained at sea tests. Limitations of current COTS radar systems are also discussed and further research directions are proposed towards the development and integration of advanced collision avoidance systems taking in account the different requirements in unmanned surface vehicles.
