A video-aware unequal loss protection (ULP) system for protecting RTP video streaming in bursty packet loss networks is proposed. Just considering the relevance of the frame, the state of the channel and the bitrate constraints of the protection bitstream, our algorithm selects in real time the most suitable frames to be protected through forward error correction (FEC) techniques. It benefits from a wise RTP encapsulation that allows working at a frame level without requiring any further process than that of parsing RTP headers, so it is perfectly suitable to be included in commercial transmitters. The simulation results show how our proposed ULP technique outperforms non-smart schemes.

This paper presents an alternative Forward Error Correction scheme, based on Reed-Solomon codes, with the aim of protecting the transmission of RTP-multimedia streams: the inter-packet symbol approach. This scheme is based on an alternative bit structure that allocates each symbol of the Reed-Solomon code in several RTP-media packets. This characteristic permits to exploit better the recovery capability of Reed-Solomon codes against bursty packet losses. The performance of our approach has been studied in terms of encoding/decoding time versus recovery capability, and compared with other proposed schemes in the literature. The theoretical analysis has shown that our approach allows the use of a lower size of the Galois Fields compared to other solutions. This lower size results in a decrease of the required encoding/decoding time while keeping a comparable recovery capability. Finally, experimental results have been carried out to assess the performance of our approach compared to other schemes in a simulated environment, where models for wireless and wireline channels have been considered.

O isolamento do Continente face às ilhas foi uma das razões determinantes para a implementação de um canal regional na Madeira. No contexto dos media, o “regional” e o “local” foram assumidos como espaços de ampla importância, pela sua singularidade e necessidade de absorver e transmitir informação. A chegada da televisão à Madeira propiciou um momento de mudança na sociedade insular que, a partir de então, podia acompanhar o seu quotidiano através de imagens e de sons. Em 1972, a RTP Madeira deu os primeiros passos com uma programação totalmente assegurada pela RTP, tendo apenas iniciado em 1976 a sua produção regional com o programa Dentro do Espaço e de Tempo. Com a chegada dos anos 80 e 90, a televisão regional experimentou uma fase de aprendizagem e de profissionalização, onde se destacam Maria Virgínia Aguiar e Armindo Abreu, que, enquanto diretores do Centro, foram responsáveis por um grande número de produções que aproximaram a RTP Madeira dos seus telespectadores. Já na entrada do novo milénio, assiste-se no canal a uma grande intensificação da produção própria, norteada pelo serviço público, uma missão que na fase final da primeira década do Século XXI acaba por ver-se comprometida por um horário de exibição entre as 19 e as 23 horas, imposto pelo XIX Governo Constitucional, e num cenário de indecisão quanto ao futuro da estação regional. Com “A RTP Madeira: um marco cultural entre 1972 e 2012” poderemos acompanhar o percurso do Centro Regional da Madeira, através dos seus programas e agentes. Perante nós ecoam vozes e perpassam memórias que desejamos ajudar a perpetuar.

The general-care glass ceiling hypothesis states that not only is it more difficult for women than for men to be promoted up levels of authority hierarchies within workplaces but also that the obstacles women face relative to men become greater as they move rtp the hierarchy. Gender-based discrimination in promotions is not simply present across levels of hierarchy but is more intense at higher levels. Empirically, this implies that the relative rates of women being promoted to higher levels compared to men should decline with the level of the hierarchy. This article explores this hypothesis with data from three countries: the United States, Australia, and Sweden. The basic conclusion is that while there is strong evidence for a general gender gap in authority-the odds of women having authority are less than those of men-there is no evidence for systematic glass ceiling effects in the United States and only weak evidence for such effects in the other two countries.

Introduction and objectives: Recurrent transplant pyelonephritis (RTP) secondary to vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) to the transplant kidney (KTx) remains a significant cause of infectious complications with impact on patient and graft outcomes. Our objective was to verify the safety and efficacy of transurethral injection of Durasphere (R) to relieve RTP secondary to VUR after renal transplantation. Patients and methods: Between June 2004 and July 2008, eight patients with RTP (defined as two or more episodes of pyelonephritis after transplantation) and VUR to the KTx were treated with subureteral injections of Durasphere (R). The mean age at surgery was 38.8 +/- 13.8 yr (23-65). The patients were followed regularly every six months. The mean interval between the KTx and the treatment was 76 +/- 74.1 (10-238 months). The mean follow-up was 22.3 +/- 16.1 months (8-57 months). Results: Six patients (75%) were free of pyelonephritis during a mean period of follow-up of 23.2 +/- 17.1 months (8-57 months). Two of them had no VUR and four cases presented with G II VUR (pre-operative G IV three cases and one case G III). In one case, symptomatic recurrent cystitis made a second treatment necessary. This patient remained free of infections for three yr after the first treatment and for 18 months after the second treatment. Of the remaining two patients, one had six episodes of RTP before treatment in a period of three yr and only two episodes after treatment in two yr of follow-up. The last case had a new episode of pyelonephritis five months after treatment. Conclusions: Transurethral injection therapy with Durasphere (R) is a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment option for KTx patients with recurrent RTP. A second treatment seems to be necessary in some cases.

Termination of DNA replication in Bacillus subtilis involves the polar arrest of replication forks by a specific complex formed between the replication terminator protein (RTP) and DNA terminator sites. While determination of the crystal structure of RTP has facilitated our understanding of how a single RTP dimer interacts with terminator DNA, additional information is required in order to understand the assembly of a functional fork arrest complex, which requires an interaction between two RTP dimers and the terminator site. In this study, we show that the conformation of the major B. subtilis DNA terminator, Terl, becomes considerably distorted upon binding RTP. Binding of the first dimer of RTP to the B site of Terl causes the DNA to become slightly unwound and bent by similar to 40 degrees. Binding of a second dimer of RTP to the A site causes the bend angle to increase to similar to 60 degrees. We have used this new data to construct two plausible models that might explain how the ternary terminator complex can block DNA replication in a polar manner, in the first model, polarity of action is a consequence of the two RTP-DNA half-sites having different conformations. These different conformations result from different RTP-DNA contacts at each half-site (due to the intrinsic asymmetry at the terminator DNA), as well as interactions (direct or indirect) between the RTP dimers on the DNA. In the second model, polar fork arrest activity is a consequence of the different affinities of RTP for the A and B sites of the terminator DNA, modulated significantly by direct or indirect interactions between the RTP dimers.

A telenovela é uma forma de narrativa continua e em série com origem na radio, em Cuba, nos anos 40 e desde aí tem-se difundido, através do mundo, como uma forma televisiva, com particular relevância nos países da américa-latina onde o género alcança shares na ordem dos 90%. Na verdade as telenovelas latino-americanas, principalmente as brasileiras e as mexicanas, são neste momento os conteúdos televisi - vos mais exportados. Alguns autores do género, como é o caso do cubano Delia Fiallo, afirmam que mais de 1600 milhões de pessoas vêem estas produções. A ser verdade, este modo de produção seria responsável pela realização do produto televisivo de ficção mais visto de todos os tempos. A telenovela é um parente próximo, da soap opera norte-americana, mas jamais poderá ser considerada como um género gémeo da mesma. A diferença mais importante entre estes dois géneros é que a telenovela embora tenha uma narrativa contínua é concebida a partir de um modelo com um número de episódios prédeterminados e com um fim previsto. Nenhuma das telenovelas latino-americanas tem como opção uma continuidade infindável, como é o caso de «Coronation Street», uma das soap operas mais populares em todo o mundo. A telenovela pode durar 250 e até mesmo 500 episódios mas apresenta-se sempre com um final previsto. A narrativa é frequentemente centrada num acontecimento nuclear que serve como linha condutora. No entanto, existem na telenovela sub-tramas simultâneos, que apoiam a trama principal, mais com um carácter secundário e complementar que como narrativa paralela ou opcional. A primeira telenovela que foi importada pela Europa teve origem no Brasil. A novela de Rede Globo de Televisão, «Gabriela» foi exibida em Portugal em 1996 pelo serviço público de televisão, RTP. Desde aí as telenovela brasileiras têm sido consideradas, continuamente, o conteúdo televisivo mais popular da televisão portuguesa, mesmo após o aparecimento dos canais de televisão privados (SIC e TVI) no início dos anos 90. Como consequência deste fenómeno, Portugal adoptou como sistema o modo de produção brasileiro e adaptou à realização do género nacional um modelo inspirado, particularmente, no esquema produtivo da Rede Globo de Televisão.
