Copolymers of norbornene (NBE) with norbomadiene (NBD) were obtained via ROMP with [RuCl2(PPh3)(2)(L)] type complexes as initiators (1 for L = piperidine and 2 for L = 3,5-Me(2)piperidine). The reactions were performed using a fixed quantity of NBE (5000 equivalents/[Ru]) for different concentrations of NBD (500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 equivalents/ [Ru]) in CHCl3, initiated with ethyl diazoacetate at room temperature. The presence of NBD in the NBE chains was characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR. Whereas the copolymer microstructure was influenced neither by the NBD quantity nor by the initiator type, the N-n and PDI values were improved when increasing the NBD quantity in the medium. When raising the NBD amount, DMA results indicated increased cross-linking with increasing T-g and E ' storage modulus, as well as the fact that SEM micrographs indicated decreased pore sizes in the porous isolated copolymers. We present the synthesis of a copolymer structure, poly(9,9′-n-di-hexyl-2,7-fluorene-alt-2,5- bithiophene), referred to herein as LaPPS43, and its physico-chemical characterization. Thin films of this polymer mixed with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were used as the active layer in photovoltaic devices using the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/LaPPS43: PCBM/Ca/Al bulk heterojunction structure. The devices of different active layer thicknesses were electrically studied using J-V curves and the Photo-Celiv technique. The obtained results show that LaPPS43 combined with PCBM is a promising system for photovoltaic devices. Device performance is discussed in terms of the mean drift distance x for charge carriers. Photophysical data showed that the excitonic species are all localized in the aggregated forms. The mechanism of exciton formation and dissociation is also discussed.

The diffusion of water into cylinders of polyHEMA and copolymers of HEMA with THFMA, BMA and CHMA were studied over a range of copolymer compositions. The diffusion of water into the polymers was found to follow a Fickian, or case I mechanism. The diffusion coefficients of water were determined from mass measurements and NMR imaging studies. They were found to vary from 1.7 +/- 0.2 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for polyHEMA at 37 degreesC to lower values for the copolymers. The mass of water absorbed at equilibrium relative to the mass of dry polymer varied from 52-58 wt% for polyHEMA to lower values for the copolymers.

A novel wide-bandgap conjugated polymer (PDHFSCHD) consisting of alternating dihexylfluorene and rigidly twisted biphenyl units has been synthesized. The new fluorene-based copolymer composed of rigid twisting segments in the main-chain exhibits an optical bandgap of as high as 3.26 eV, and a highly efficient ultraviolet emission with peaks at 368 nm and 386 nm. An electroluminescence device from PDHFSCHD neat film as an active layer shows UV emission which peaks at 395 nm with a turn on voltage below 8 V By optimizing the device conditions, a peak EL quantum efficiency of 0.054% and brightness of 10 cd.m(-2) was obtained. Furthermore, blending a poly(dihexylfluorene) in the PDHFSCHD host gave pure blue emission peaking at 417 nm, and 440 nm without long wavelength emission from aggregated species. Efficient energy transfer from PDHFSCHD to PDHF was demonstrated in these blended systems. Depressed chain-aggregation of PDHF in the PDHFSCHD host can correspond to pure blue emission behaviors.

A series of sulfonate based copolymer ionomers based on a combination of ionic liquid and sodium cations have been prepared in different ratios. This system was designed to improve the ionic conductivity of ionomers by partially replacing sodium cations with bulky cations that are less associated with anion centres on the polymer backbone. This provides more conduction sites for sodium to ‘hop’ to in the ionomers. Characterization showed the glass transition and 15N chemical shift of the ionomers did not vary significantly as the amount of Na+ varied, while the ionic conductivity increased with decreasing Na+ content, indicating conductivity is increasingly decoupled from Tg. Optical microscope images showed phase separation in all compositions, which indicated the samples were inhomogeneous. The introduction of low molecular weight plasticizer (PEG) reduced the Tg and increased the ionic conductivity significantly. The inclusion of PEG also led to a more homogeneous material.

We report the performance and photophysics of a low band-gap diketopyrrolopyrrole-based copolymer used in bulk heterojunction devices in combination with PC71BM. We show that the short lifetime of photogenerated excitons in the polymer constitutes an obstacle towards device efficiency by limiting the diffusion range of the exciton to the donor-acceptor heterojunction. We employ ultrafast transient-probe and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques to examine the excited state loss channels inside the devices. We use the high boiling point solvent additive 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) to study the photoexcited state losses in different blend morphologies. The solvent additive acts as a compatibiliser between the donor and the acceptor material and leads to smaller domain sizes, higher charge formation yields and increased device efficiency.

本论文选用不同取代基及取代位置的芳香梭酸类和磺酸类稀土配合物、烷基锌、甘油组成的三元催化体系,用于二氧化碳与环氧化合物的二元和三元共聚合反应。探讨了稀土三元催化剂的不同配体对聚合产物的收率和聚合物结构的影响,进一步明晰了稀土催化体系与聚合物结构和性能之间的关系。本论文的创新点和主要结果如下:1.在三元催化体系中引入稀土络合物,提高了活性中心(Zn-O-)中的锌内层电子结合能Zn(2p_(3/2)),结合催化剂的紫外可见光谱的红移效应,证明三元 催化体系中已形成了缺电性(氧化态)较强的活性中心,从而提高了CO_2和环 氧化物单体的配位插入反应速率,使聚合产物的收率比二元催化体系提高30%以上;2.芳香环上取代基的性质和取代位置是影响聚合产物收率和分子量分布的重要因素。在芳环上引入推电子基团的甲基或轻基,催化活性表现出相同的变化规律:对位<邻位<间位;若引入硝基类吸电子基团,催化活性的规律如下:邻位<间位<对位。邻位和对位取代的稀土三元催化体系更容易导致链转移反应的发生,导致聚合物的分子量分布变宽;3.二氧化碳一环氧丙烷共聚物中尾一尾,头一尾和头一头结构的存在表明在聚合反应的过程中,α断裂和β断裂相伴发生。稀土三元催化体系对环氧丙烷的开环断裂方式具有一定的选择性,共聚物中头一尾结构的含量高于68mol%。配体的选择和催化剂的组成能够在一定的范围内改变共聚物的规整性。共聚物链段的规整性是影响其玻璃化转变温度的重要因素,聚合物规整性的提高可引起其玻璃化温度的提高;4.稀土三元催化体系能够高效催化二氧化碳一环氧丙烷一氧化环己烯的三元共聚反应。单体的组成影响着二氧化碳共聚物树脂的化学组成和微结构的变化,CHO的引入提高了聚合产物的热稳定性;5.聚丙撑碳酸酷与聚环己撑碳酸醋是不相容的体系,直接在聚丙撑碳酸酯中加入聚环己撑碳酸酯不能改善其热稳定性。

By selecting polyfluorene as the polymer host, choosing 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivative moieties as the red dopant units and covalently attaching 0.3 mol% of the dopant units to the side chain of the polymer host, we developed a novel series of red electroluminescent polymers of dopant/host system with molecular dispersion feature. Their EL spectra exhibited predominant red emission from the dopant units because of the energy transfer and charge trapping from the polymer backbone to the dopant units. The emission wavelength of the polymers could be tuned by modifying the chemical structures of the dopant units.

The synthesis, thermal and emission properties of an electrophosphorescent platinum(II) metallopolyyne polymer consisting of 9-butylcarbazole-2,7-diyl spacer P1 are described. The optical and electronic properties of P1 are compared to their molecular diplatinum(II) and digold(I) model complexes. The photophysical properties of P1 are somehow analogous to its 2,7-fluorene-linked congener but differs significantly from that for the 3,6-carbazole derivative. Its optical band gap is notably reduced as compared to that for the 3,6-carbazole analog. Multi-layer polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) were fabricated with P1 as the emitting layer which gave a strong green-yellow electrophosphorescence. The best PLED can reach the maximum current efficiency of 4.7 cd . A(-1) at 5 wt.-% doping level, corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 1.5%. This represents the first literature example of efficient PLEDs exhibiting pure triplet emission under electrical excitation for metallopolyynes without the concomitant singlet emission.

The synthesis and photophysical studies of several multifunctional phosphorescent iridium(III) cyclometalated complexes consisting of the hole-transporting carbazole and fluorene-based 2-phenylpyridine moieties are reported. All of them are isolated as thermally and morphological stable amorphous solids. Extension of the pi-conjugation through incorporation of electron- pushing carbazole units to the fluorene fragment leads to bathochromic shifts in the emission profile, increases the highest oc- cupied molecular orbital levels and improves the charge balance in the resulting complexes because of the propensity of the carbazole unit to facilitate hole transport. These iridium-based triplet emitters give a strong orange phosphorescence light at room temperature with relatively short lifetimes in the solution phase. The photo- and electroluminescence properties of these phosphorescent carbazolylfluorene-functionalized metalated complexes have been studied in terms of the coordinating position of carbazole to the fluorene unit. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using these complexes as the solution-processed emissive layers have been fabricated which show very high efficiencies even without the need for the typical hole-transporting layer.I These orange-emitting devices can produce a maximum current efficiency of similar to 30 cd A(-1) corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of similar to 10 % ph/el (photons per electron) and a power efficiency of similar to 14 Im W-1.

By incorporating 4,7-diphenyl- 2,1,3 benzothiadiazole instead of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole into the backbone of polyfluorene, we developed a novel series of green light- emitting polymers with much improved color purity. Compared with the state-of-the-art green light-emitting polymer, poly(fluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (lambda max = 537 nm), the resulting polymers (lambda(max) = 521 nm) showed 10-20 nm blueshifted electroluminescence (EL) spectra and greatly improved color purity because the insertion of two phenylene units between the 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole unit and the fluorene unit reduced the effective conjugation length in the vicinity of the 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole unit. As a result, the resulting polymers emitted pure green light with CIE coordinates of (0.29, 0.63), which are very close to (0.26, 0.65) of standard green emission demanded by the National Television System Committee (NTSC). Moreover, the insertion of the phenylene unit did not affect the photoluminescence (PL) and EL efficiencies of the resulting polymers. PL quantum efficiency in solid films up to 0.82 was demonstrated. Single-layer devices (ITO/PEDOT/ polymer/Ca/Al) of these polymers exhibited a turn-on voltage of 4.2 V, luminous efficiency of 5.96 cd A(-1) and power efficiency of 2.21 lm W-1. High EL efficiencies and good color purities made these polymers very promising for display applications.

A conjugated poly(p-CN-phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron-donating triphenylamine units and electron-withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight-average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi-reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single-layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg-Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm).

The dopant/host methodology, which enables efficient tuning of emission color and enhancement of the electroluminescence (EL) efficiency of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on small molecules, is applied to the design and synthesis of highly efficient green light emitting polymers. Highly efficient green light emitting polymers were obtained by covalently attaching just 0.3-1.0 mol% of a green dopant, 4-(N,N-diphenyl) amino-1,8-naphthaliniide (DPAN), to the pendant chain of polyfluorene (the host). The polymers emit green light and exhibit a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of Lip to 0.96 in solid films, which is attributed to the energy transfer from the polyfluorene host to the DPAN dopant unit. Single layer devices (device configuration: ITO/PEDOT/Polymer/Ca/Al) of the polymers exhibit a turn on voltage of 4.8 V, luminance efficiency of 7.43 cd A(-1), power efficiency of 2.96 lm W-1 and CIE coordinates at (0.26, 0.58). The good device performance can be attributed to the energy transfer and charge trapping from the polyfluorene host to the DPAN dopant unit as well as the molecular dispersion of the dopant in the host.
