The role of sodium surface species in the modification of a platinum (Pt) catalyst film supported on 8 mol% yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ) was investigated under a flow of 20 kPa oxygen at 400 °C. Cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry were used to investigate the kinetics of the oxygen charge transfer reaction. The Pt/YSZ systems of both ‘clean’ and variable-coverage sodium-modified catalyst surfaces were also characterised using SEM, XPS and work function measurements using the Kelvin probe technique.
Samples with sodium coverage from 0.5 to 100% were used. It was found that sodium addition modifies the binding energy of oxygen onto the catalyst surface. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that higher overpotentials were required for oxygen reduction with increasing sodium coverage. In addition, sodium was found to modify oxygen storage and/or adsorption and diffusion increasing current densities at higher cathodic overpotential. Ex situ XPS measurements showed the presence of sodium hydroxide, carbonate and/or oxide species on the catalyst surface, while the Kelvin probe technique showed a decrease of approximately 250 meV in the work function of samples with more than 50% sodium coverage (compared to a nominally ‘clean’ sample).

Pt-modified SnO2 electrodes were prepared onto titanium substrates in the form of thin films of similar to2 mum at different temperatures in the range from 200 to 400degreesC. Surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that Pt-SnO2 sol-gel layers are significantly rough and have a low porosity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed that the films consist of Pt nanoparticles with average size varying from about 5 to 10 nm, depending on the preparation temperature, and amorphous tin oxide. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to determine the superficial composition of the electrodes and demonstrated the presence of Sn4+ in all the samples. XPS spectra of the Pt 4f electrons showed the presence of Pt in the zero-valence state as well as in ionic forms. The general electrochemical behavior was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in 1 mol l(-1) HClO4 and the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of formaldehyde was investigated by potential sweeps and chronoamperometry. The results obtained show that the Pt-SnO2/Ti system exhibits a significant catalytic activity for the oxidation of formaldehyde, with an onset potential below 0.1 V. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Barium titanate thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method and deposited onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the formation of the BaTiO3 perovskite phase. Afterwards, the films were submitted to post-annealing treatments in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres at 300 degreesC for 2 h, and had their dielectric properties measured. It was observed that the electric properties of the thin films are very sensitive to the nature of the post-annealing atmosphere. This study demonstrates that post-annealing in an oxygen atmosphere increases the dielectric relaxation phenomenon and that post-annealing in a nitrogen atmosphere produces a slight dielectric relaxation. We study the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the catalytic process occurring at the cathode in fuel cells, on Pt layers prepared by electrodeposition onto an Au substrate. Using a nominal Pt layer by layer deposition method previously proposed, imperfect layers of Pt on Au are obtained. The ORR on deposited Pt layers decreases with increasing Pt thickness. In the submonolayer region, however, the ORR activity is superior to that of bulk Pt. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we correlate the observed activity trend to strain, ligand, and ensemble effects. At submonolayer coverage certain atom configurations weaken the binding energies of reaction intermediates due to a ligand and ensemble effect, thus effectively increasing the ORR activity. At higher Pt coverage the activity is governed by a strain effect, which lowers the activity by decreasing the oxidation potential of water. This study is a nice example of how the influence of strain, ligand, and ensemble effects on the ORR can be deconvoluted.

In this paper, we present how a thin RF sputtered layer of lanthanum oxide (La2O3) can alter electrical and improve hydrogen gas sensing characteristics of Pt/molybdenum oxide (MoO3) nanostructures Schottky diodes. We derived the barrier height, ideality factor and dielectric constant from the measured I–V characteristics at operating temperatures in the range of 25–300 ◦C. The dynamic response, response and recovery times were obtained upon exposure to hydrogen gas at different concentrations. Analysis of the results indicated a substantial improvement to the voltage shift sensitivity of the sensors incorporating the La2O3 layer. We associate this enhancement to the formation of numerous trap states due to the presence of the La2O3 thin film on the MoO3 nanoplatelets. These trap states increase the intensity of the dipolar charges at the metal–semiconductor interface, which induce greater bending of the energy bands. However, results also indicate that the presence of La2O3 trap states also increases response and recover times as electrons trapping and de-trapping processes occur before they can pass through this thin dielectric layer.

In this work, we investigate how hydrogen sensing performance of thermally evaporated MoO3 nanoplatelets can be further improved by RF sputtering a thin layer of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) or lanthanum oxide (La2O3). We show that dissociated hydrogen atoms cause the thin film layer to be polarised, inducing a measurable potential difference greater than that as reported previously. We attribute these observations to the presence of numerous traps in the thin layer; their states allow a stronger trapping of charge at the Pt-thin film oxide interface as compared to the MoO3 sensors without the coating. Under exposure to H2 (10 000 ppm) the maximum change in dielectric constant of 45.6 (at 260 °C) for the Ta2O5/MoO3 nanoplatelets and 31.6 (at 220 °C) for La2O3/MoO3 nanoplatelets. Subsequently, the maximum sensitivity for the Ta2O5/MoO3 is 16.87 (at 260 °C) and La2O3/MoO3 is 7.52 (at 300 °C).

Polyaniline (PANI) thin films modified with platinum nanoparticles have been prepared by several methods, characterised and assessed in terms of electrocatalytic properties. These composite materials have been prepared by the in situ reduction of a platinum salt (K2PtCl4) by PANI, in a variety of solvents, resulting in the formation of platinum nanoparticles and clusters of different sizes. The further deposition of platinum clusters at spin cast thin films of PANI/Pt composites from a neutral aqueous solution of K2PtCl4 has also been demonstrated. Thin-film electrodes prepared from these materials have been investigated for their electrocatalytic activity by studying hydrazine oxidation and dichromate reduction. The properties of the composite materials have been determined using UV–visible spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The nature of the material formed is strongly dependent on the solvent used to dissolve PANI, the method of preparation of the PANI/Pt solution and the composition of the spin cast thin film before subsequent deposition of platinum from the aqueous solution of K2PtCl4.

The design and two-component [2 + 3] self-assembly of a series of new organometallic molecular prisms (3a-d) are described. Assemblies 3a,b incorporate 4,4',4'-tris[ethynyl-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)]triphenylamine (1a) containing a Pt-ethynyl functionality as tritopic planar acceptor and organic ``clips'' 2a and 2b, respectively [where 2a = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)isophthalic amide; 2b= 1,3-bis(ethynyl-3-pyridyl)benzene]. In a complementary approach all organic tritopic planar donor ligand 2c [2c 4,4',4'-tris(4-pyridylethynyl)triphenylamine] was assembled with all organometallic ``clip'', 1,8-bis[{trans-Pt(PEt3) (2)(NO3)}ethynyl]anthracene (1b), to obtain prism 3c. A organometallic carbon-centered acceptor, 1,1,1- tris[4-{trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)}ethynylphenyl]ethane (1c), has been prepared, and its prism derivative (3d) using an organic `clip'' is prepared. Assemblies (3a-d) were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. 3a-d showed fluorescence behavior in solution, and quenching of fluorescence intensity (3a,3c-d) was noticed upon addition of TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), a common constituent of many commercial explosives. A thin film of the assembly 3d made by spin coating of a solution of 3 x 10(-5) M in DMF on it 1 cm(2) quartz plate showed fluorescence response to the vapor of TNT.

Redox reactions which occur at positive potentials such as ferrous/ferric, hydroquinone/quinone, ferrocyanide/ferricyanide etc. in aqueous acidic electrolytes cannot be studied on non-platinum metals, for example, a Ni electrode. On the contrary, these reactions occur on polyaniline (PANI) modified Ni electrodes, as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and steady-state polarization experiments. Under identical experimental conditions of scan rate (v) and concentration (C), the peak current density (i(p)) values of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction are greater on the PANI modified Ni than on Pt. Additionally, the peak potential separation (DeltaE(p)) of the voltammogram is lesser on the PANI modified Ni. With an increase in thickness of the PANI, DeltaE(p) increases suggesting that the redox reactions tend to depart from the reversibility. Scanning electron micrographs reveal the presence of a crystalline deposit of PANI on Ni when the thickness of PANI is about 0.08 mum. However, the PANI becomes amorphous and porous at higher thickness values. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies corroborate the observations made out of scanning electron microscopy. Higher catalytic activity of PANI is attributed to crystalline nature of PANI on Ni. Exchange current density and standard rate constant of Fe2+/Fe(3+)redox reaction are evaluated. Homogeneous thin films of Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) (SCT40) and asymmetric multilayer of SrTiO(3) (STO) and CaTiO(3) (CTO) were fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by using pulsed laser deposition technique. The electrical behavior of films was observed within a temperature range of 153 K-373 K. A feeble dielectric peak of SCT40 thin film at 273 K is justified as paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition. Moreover, the Curie-Weiss temperature, determined from the epsilon'(T) data above the transition temperature is found to be negative. Using Landau theory, the negative Curie-Weiss temperature is interpreted in terms of an antiferroelectric transition. The asymmetric multilayer exhibits a broad dielectric peak at 273 K. and is attributed to interdiffusion at several interfaces of multilayer. The average dielectric constants for homogeneous Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) films (similar to 650) and asymmetric multilayered films (similar to 350) at room temperature are recognized as a consequence of grain size effect. Small frequency dispersion in the real part of the dielectric constants and relatively low dielectric losses for both cases ensure high quality of the films applicable for next generation integrated devices. An organometallic building block 1,3,5-tris(4-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)I(ethynyl)phenyl)benzene (1) incorporating Pt-ethynyl functionality has been synthesized and characterized. 2 + 3] self-assembly of its nitrate analogue 1,3,5-tris(4-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(ONO2)(ethynyl)phenyl)benzene (2) with ``clip'' type bidentate donors (L-1-L-3) separately afforded three trigonal prismatic architectures (3a-3c), respectively. All these prisms were characterized and their shapes/sizes are predicted through geometry optimization employing molecular mechanics universal force field (MMUFF) simulation. The extended p-conjugation including the presence of Pt-ethynyl functionality makes them electron rich as well as luminescent in nature. Macrocycles 3b and 3c exhibit fluorescence quenching in solution upon addition of picric acid PA], which is a common constituent of many explosives. Interestingly, the non-responsive nature of fluorescent intensity towards other electron-deficient nitro-aromatic explosives (NAEs) makes them promising selective sensors for PA with a detection limit predicted to be ppb level. Furthermore, solid-state quenching of fluorescent intensity of the thin film of 3b upon exposure to saturated vapor of picric acid has drawn special attention for infield applications.

The interface adhesion strength (or interface toughness) of a thin film/substrate system is often assessed by the micro-scratch test. For a brittle film material, the interface adhesion strength is easily obtained through measuring the scratch driving forces. However, to measure the interface adhesion strength (or interface toughness) for a metal thin film material (the ductile material) by the microscratch test is very difficult, because intense plastic deformation is involved and the problem is a three-dimensional elastic-plastic one. In the present research, using a double-cohesive zone model, the failure characteristics of the thin film/substrate system can be described and further simulated. For a steady-state scratching process, a three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element method based on the double cohesive zone model is developed and adopted, and the steady-state fracture work of the total system is calculated. The parameter relations between the horizontal driving forces (or energy release rate of the scratching process) and the separation strength of thin film/substrate interface, and the material shear strength, as well as the material parameters are developed. Furthermore, a scratch experiment for the Al/Si film/substrate system is carried out and the failure mechanisms are explored. Finally, the prediction results are applied to a scratch experiment for the Pt/NiO material system given in the literature.
