Microkinetic model is developed in the free energy landscape based on density functional theory (DFT) to quantitatively investigate the reaction mechanism of chemoselective partial hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to crotyl alcohol over Pt(1 1 1) at the temperature of 353 K. Three different methods (mobile, immobile and collision theory models) were carried out to obtain free energy barrier of adsorption/desorption processes. The results from mobile and collision theory models are similar. The calculated TOFs from both models are close to the experiment value. However, for the immobile model, in which the free energy barrier of desorption approaches the energy barrier, the calculated TOF is 2 orders of magnitude lower than the other models. The difficulty of adsorption/ desorption may be overestimated in the immobile model. In addition, detailed analyses show that for the surface hydrogenation elementary steps, the entropy and internal energy effects are small under the reaction condition, while the zero-point-energy (ZPE) correction is significant, especially for the multi-step hydrogenation reaction. The total energy with the ZPE correction approaches to the full free energy calculation for the surface reaction under the reaction condition. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The microkinetics based on density function theory (DFT) calculations is utilized to investigate the reaction mechanism of crotonaldehyde hydrogenation on Pt(111) in the free energy landscape. The dominant reaction channel of each hydrogenation product is identified. Each of them begins with the first surface hydrogenation of the carbonyl oxygen of crotonaldehyde on the surface. A new mechanism, 1,4-addition mechanism generating enols (butenol), which readily tautomerize to saturated aldehydes (butanal), is identified as a primary mechanism to yield saturated aldehydes instead of the 3,4-addition via direct hydrogenation of the ethylenic bond. The calculation results also show that the full hydrogenation product, butylalcohol, mainly stems from the deep hydrogenation of surface open-shell dihydrogenation intermediates. It is found that the apparent barriers of the dominant pathways to yield three final products are similar on P(111), which makes it difficult to achieve a high selectivity to the desired crotyl alcohol (COL).

Low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and temperature-programmed reaction spectrometry results are reported for the structural and reactive behavior of alumina films grown on Pt(111) as a function of thickness and oxidation temperature. Submonolayer Al films undergo compete oxidation at 300 K, annealing at 1100 K resulting in formation of somewhat distorted crystalline gamma-alumina, Thicker deposits require 800 K oxidation to produce Al2O3, and these too undergo crystallization at 800 K, yielding islands of apparently undistorted gamma-alumina on the Pt(111) surface. Oxidation of a p(2 x 2) Pt3Al surface alloy occurs only at>800 K, resulting in Al extraction, These alumina films on Pt(lll) markedly increase the coverage of adsorbed SO4 resulting from SO2 chemisorption onto oxygen-precovered surfaces. This results in enhanced propane uptake and subsequent reactivity relative to SO4/Pt(111). A bifunctional mechanism is proposed to account for our observations, and the relevance of these to an understanding of the corresponding dispersed systems is discussed.

The structural, thermal, chemisorptive, and electronic properties of Ce on Pt{111} are studied by photoemission, Auger spectroscopy, scanning tunnel microscope (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Stranski-Krastanov-like growth of low-density Ce layers is accompanied by substantial valence charge transfer from Ce to Pt: in line with this, the measured dipole moment and polarizability of adsorbed Ce at low coverages are 7.2 x 10(-30) C m and similar to 1.3x10(-29) m(3), respectively. Pt-Ce intermixing commences at similar to 400 K and with increasing temperature a sequence of five different ordered surface alloys evolves. The symmetry, periodicities, and rotational epitaxy observed by LEED are in good accord with the STM data which reveal the true complexity of the system. The Various bimetallic surface phases are based on growth of crystalline Pt5Ce, a hexagonal layer structure consisting of alternating layers of Pt2Ce and Kagome nets of Pt atoms. This characteristic ABAB layered arrangement of the surface alloys is clearly imaged, and chemisorption data permit a distinction to be made between the more reactive Pt2Ce layer and the less reactive Pt Kagome net. Either type of layer can appear at the surface as the terminating structure, thicker films exhibiting unit mesh parameters characteristic of the bulk alloy.

The chemisorption and reactivity of SO2 on Pt{111} have been studied by HREELS, XPS, NEXAFS and temperature-programmed desorption. At 160 K SO2 adsorbs intact at high coverages, with eta(2) S-O coordination to the surface. On annealing to 270 K, NEXAFS indicates the SO2 molecular plane essentially perpendicular to the surface. Preadsorbed O-a reacts with SO2 to yield adsorbed SO4, identified as the key surface species responsible for SO2-promoted catalytic alkane oxidation. Coadsorbed CO or propene efficiently reduce SO2 overlayers to deposit S-a, and the implications of this for catalytic systems are discussed.

Electrochemically modified ethylene oxidation over a PI film supported on the Na+ ion conductor beta '' alumina has been studied over a range of conditions encompassing both promotion and poisoning, The system exhibits reversible behavior, and the data are interpreted in terms of (i) Na-enhanced oxygen chemisorption and (ii) poisoning of the surface by accumulation of Na compounds. At low Na coverages the first effect results in increased competitive adsorption of oxygen at the expense of ethylene, resulting in an increased rate, At very negative catalyst potentials (high Na coverage) both effects operate to poison the system: the increased strength of the Pt-O bond and coverage of the catalytic surface by compounds of Na strongly suppress the rate, Kinetic and spectroscopic results for ethylene oxidation over a Pt(111)-Na model catalyst shed light on important aspects of the electrochemically controlled system, Low levels of Na promote the reaction and high levels poison it, mirroring the behavior observed under electrochemical control and strongly suggesting that sodium pumped from the solid electrolyte is the key species, XP and Auger spectra show that under reaction conditions, the sodium exists as a surface carbonate. Post-reaction TPD spectra and the use of (CO)-C-13 demonstrate that CO is formed as a stable reaction intermediate, The observed activation energy (56 +/- 3 kJ/mol) is similar to that measured for CO oxidation under comparable conditions, suggesting that the rate limiting step is CO oxidation. The electrochemical deposition of Ru on Pt(111) electrodes has been investigated by electron diffraction, Auger spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry in a closed UHV transfer system. At small coverages Ru formed a monatomic commensurate layer, at higher coverage mostly small islands with a bilayer height were detected. When the Pt was almost completely covered by Ru, three-dimensional clusters developed. The island structure of Ru changed upon electrooxidation of CO, reflecting an enhanced mobility of Ru. Adsorption and electrooxidation of CO have been studied on such Ru-modified Pt(111) electrodes using cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Compared to the pure metals, the Ru-CO bond is weakened, the Pt-CO bond strengthened on the modified electrodes. The catalytic activity of the Ru/Pt(111) electrode toward CO adlayer oxidation is higher than that of pure Ru and a PtRu alloy (50:50). It is concluded that the electrooxidation of CO takes place preferentially at the Ru islands, while CO adsorbed on Pt migrates to them. © 1999 American Chemical Society.

The structure of a Pt(111) electrode after treatment in an electrolyte and subsequent transfer to an UHV chamber was investigated ex situ by combined low energy electron diffraction (LEED), reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Treatment of the sample in a CO saturated 0.1 M HClO solution at potentials between -0.2 and 0.2 V versus Ag/AgCl caused a maximum CO coverage of about 0.75 as probed by cyclic voltammetry, which dropped by partial desorption to about 0.25 upon transfer to the UHV chamber. This adlayer exhibited a (distorted) 3×3 R30° pattern by RHEED (but not with LEED) exhibiting an average domain size of 2.3 nm at room temperature. This is identified with the same phase reported before from gas phase studies, as also corroborated by the similarities of the vibrational spectroscopic data. The same structure (albeit even more poorly ordered) was found after dissociative adsorption of methanol.

Ab initio total energy calculations within a density functional theory framework have been performed for CO and atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface. Optimised geometries and chemisorption energies for CO and O on four high-symmetry sites, namely the top, bridge, fee hollow and hcp hollow sites, are presented, the coverage in all cases being 0.25 ML. The differences in CO adsorption energies between these sites are found to be small, suggesting that the potential energy surface for CO diffusion across Pt(111) is relatively flat. The 5 sigma and 2 pi molecular orbitals of CO are found to contribute to bonding with the metal. Some mixing of the 4 sigma and 1 pi molecular orbitals with metal states is also observed. For atomic oxygen, the most stable adsorption site is found to be the fee hollow site, followed in decreasing order of stability by the hcp hollow and bridge sites, with the top site being the least stable. The differences in chemisorption energies between sites for oxygen are larger than in the case of CO, suggesting a higher barrier to diffusion for atomic oxygen. The co-adsorption of CO and O has also been investigated. Calculated chemisorption energies for CO on an O/fcc-precovered surface show that of the available chemisorption sites, the top site at the oxygen atom's next-nearest neighbour surface metal atom is the most stable, with the other four sites calculated bring at least 0.29 eV less stable. The trend of CO site stability in the coadsorption system is explained in terms of a 'bonding competition' model. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ab initio total energy calculations within the Density Functional Theory framework were carried out for Pt(111), Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO, Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, and Pt(111)-p(2x2)-(CO+O) to provide an insight into the interaction between CO and O on metal surfaces, an important issue in CO oxidation, and also in promotion and poisoning effects of catalysis. The geometrical structures of these systems were optimized with respect to the total energy, the results of which agree with existing experimental values very well. It is found that (i) the local structures of Pt(111)-p(2x2)-(CO+O), such as the bond lengths of C-O, C-Pt, and O-Pt (chemisorbed O atom with Pt), are almost the same as that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO and Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, respectively, (ii) the total valence charge density distributions in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-(CO+O) are very similar to that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO, except in the region of the chemisorbed oxygen atom, and also nearly identical to that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, apart from in the region of the chemisorbed CO, and (iii) the chemisorption energy of CO on a precovered Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O and the chemisorption energy of O on a precovered Pt(111)-p(2x2)CO are almost equal to that in Pt(111)-p(2x2)-CO and Pt(111)-p(2x2)-O, respectively. These results indicate that the interaction between CO and chemisorbed oxygen on a metal surface is mainly shore range in nature. The discussions of Pt-CO and Pt-O bonding and the interaction between CO and the chemisorbed oxygen atom on Pt(111) are augmented by local densities of states and real space distributions of quantum states.

CO oxidation on Pt(111) is studied with ab initio density functional theory. The low energy pathway and transition state for the reaction are identified. The key event is the breaking of an O-metal bond prior to the formation of a chemisorbed CO2 molecule. The pathway can be rationalized in terms of competition of the O and C atoms for bonding with the underlying surface, and the predominant energetic barrier is the strength of the O-metal bond.

Calculations are reported of the magnetic anisotropy energy of two-dimensional (2D) Co nanostructures on a Pt(111) substrate. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of the 2D Co clusters strongly depends on their size and shape, and rapidly decreases with increasing cluster size. The PMA calculated is in reasonable agreement with experimental results. The sensitivity of the results to the Co-Pt spacing at the interface is also investigated and, in particular, for a complete Co monolayer we note that the value of the spacing at the interface determines whether PMA or in-plane anisotropy occurs. We find that the PMA can be greatly enhanced by the addition of Pt adatoms to the top surface of the 2D Co clusters. A single Pt atom can induce in excess of 5 meV to the anisotropy energy of a cluster. In the absence of the Pt adatoms the PMA of the Co clusters falls below 1 meV/Co atom for clusters of about 10 atoms whereas, with Pt atoms added to the surface of the clusters, a PMA of 1 meV/Co atom can be maintained for clusters as large as about 40 atoms. The effect of placing Os atoms on the top of the Co clusters is also considered. The addition of 5d atoms and clusters on the top of ferromagnetic nanoparticles may provide an approach to tune the magnetic anisotropy and moment separately.

The surface structure of BaO(111) has been determined using STM and computer modelling. The BaO(111) surface was prepared in thin film form on Pt(111) and presents a surface with twice the lattice parameter expected for that of the bulk termination, i.e. a (2 x 2) reconstruction. Computer modelling indicates that the bulk termination is unstable, but that the (2 x 2) reconstructed BaO(111) surface has a low surface energy and is hence a stable surface reconstruction. The (2 x 2) reconstruction consists of small, three-sided pyramids with (100) oriented sides and either oxygen or barium ions at the apices. Less regular surface reconstructions containing the same pyramids are almost equally stable, indicating that we may also expect less regular regions to appear with a fairly random distribution of these surface species. The simulations further suggest that a regular (4 x 4) reconstruction built up of bigger pyramids is even more energetically favourable, and some evidence is found for such a structure in the STM. The structure of the mixed p(3x3)-(3OH+3H(2)O) phase on Pt{111} has been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction-IV structure analysis. The OH+H2O overlayer consists of hexagonal rings of coplanar oxygen atoms interlinked by hydrogen bonds. Lateral shifts of the O atoms away from atop sites result in different O-O separations and hexagons with only large separations (2.81 and 3.02 angstrom) linked by hexagons with alternating separations of 2.49 and 2.81/3.02 A. This unusual pattern is consistent with a hydrogen-bonded network in which water is adsorbed in cyclic rings separated by OH in a p(3x3) structure. The topmost two layers of the Pt atoms relax inwards with respect to the clean surface and both show vertical buckling of up to 0.06 angstrom. In addition, significant shifts away from the lateral bulk positions have been found for the second layer of Pt atoms. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
