Sound waves are propagating pressure fluctuations and are typically several orders of magnitude smaller than the pressure variations in the flow field that account for flow acceleration. On the other hand, these fluctuations travel at the speed of sound in the medium, not as a transported fluid quantity. Due to the above two properties, the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations do not resolve the acoustic fluctuations. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow is still a prohibitively expensive tool to perform noise analysis. This paper proposes the acousticcorrectionmethod, an alternative and affordable tool based on a modified defect correction concept, which leads to an efficient algorithm for computational aeroacoustics and noise analysis.

Flow and turbulence above urban terrain is more complex than above rural terrain, due to the different momentum and heat transfer characteristics that are affected by the presence of buildings (e.g. pressure variations around buildings). The applicability of similarity theory (as developed over rural terrain) is tested using observations of flow from a sonic anemometer located at 190.3 m height in London, U.K. using about 6500 h of data. Turbulence statistics—dimensionless wind speed and temperature, standard deviations and correlation coefficients for momentum and heat transfer—were analysed in three ways. First, turbulence statistics were plotted as a function only of a local stability parameter z/Λ (where Λ is the local Obukhov length and z is the height above ground); the σ_i/u_* values (i = u, v, w) for neutral conditions are 2.3, 1.85 and 1.35 respectively, similar to canonical values. Second, analysis of urban mixed-layer formulations during daytime convective conditions over London was undertaken, showing that atmospheric turbulence at high altitude over large cities might not behave dissimilarly from that over rural terrain. Third, correlation coefficients for heat and momentum were analyzed with respect to local stability. The results give confidence in using the framework of local similarity for turbulence measured over London, and perhaps other cities. However, the following caveats for our data are worth noting: (i) the terrain is reasonably flat, (ii) building heights vary little over a large area, and (iii) the sensor height is above the mean roughness sublayer depth.

Using monthly mean data, daily data, and theoretical arguments, relationships between surface pressure variations associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), tropopause height, and the strength of the stratospheric vortex are established. An increase in the NAO index leads to a stronger stratospheric vortex, about 4 days later, as a result of increased equatorward refraction of upward-propagating Rossby waves. At tropopause level the effects of the enhanced NAO index and stratospheric polar vortex are opposite, resulting in a lower tropopause over Iceland and a higher tropopause over the Arctic. The raising of the Arctic tropopause leads to a stretching and spinup of the tropospheric column and is therefore associated with a lowering of the surface pressure near the North Pole. For monthly mean data it is found that a standard deviation increase in the NAO index is associated with a 10% increase in the strength of the stratospheric vortex, as measured by potential vorticity at 500 K. A simple theoretical model predicts that this is associated with about 300-m elevation of the Arctic tropopause, as is observed, and a 5-hPa lowering of the surface pressure at the North Pole. The effects of the spinup of the tropospheric column may project on the NAO pattern so that the stratosphere acts as an integrator of the NAO index.

In this paper we report coordinated multispacecraft and ground-based observations of a double substorm onset close to Scandinavia on November 17, 1996. The Wind and the Geotail spacecraft, which were located in the solar wind and the subsolar magnetosheath, respectively, recorded two periods of southward directed interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). These periods were separated by a short northward IMF excursion associated with a solar wind pressure pulse, which compressed the magnetosphere to such a degree that Geotail for a short period was located outside the bow shock. The first period of southward IMF initiated a substorm growth. phase, which was clearly detected by an array of ground-based instrumentation and by Interball in the northern tail lobe. A first substorm onset occurred in close relation to the solar wind pressure pulse impinging on the magnetopause and almost simultaneously with the northward turning of the IMF. However, this substorm did not fully develop. In clear association with the expansion of the magnetosphere at the end of the pressure pulse, the auroral expansion was stopped, and the northern sky cleared. We will present evidence that the change in the solar wind dynamic pressure actively quenched the energy available for any further substorm expansion. Directly after this period, the magnetometer network detected signatures of a renewed substorm growth phase, which was initiated by the second southward turning of the IMF and which finally lead to a second, and this time complete, substorm intensification. We have used our multipoint observations in order to understand the solar wind control of the substorm onset and substorm quenching. The relative timings between the observations on the various satellites and on the ground were used to infer a possible causal relationship between the solar wind pressure variations and consequent substorm development. Furthermore, using a relatively simple algorithm to model the tail lobe field and the total tail flux, we show that there indeed exists a close relationship between the relaxation of a solar wind pressure pulse, the reduction of the tail lobe field, and the quenching of the initial substorm.

The formation of paraffin deposits is common in the petroleum industry during production, transport and treatment stages. It happens due to modifications in the thermodynamic variables that alter the solubility of alkanes fractions present in petroleum. The deposition of paraffin can provoke significant and growing petroleum losses, arriving to block the flow, hindering to the production. This process is associated with the phases equilibrium L-S and the stages and nucleation, growth and agglomeration the crystals. That process is function of petroleum intrinsic characteristics and temperature and pressure variations, during production. Several preventive and corrective methods are used to control the paraffin crystallization, such as: use of chemical inhibitors, hot solvents injection, use of termochemistry reactions, and mechanical removal. But for offshore exploration this expensive problem needs more investigation. Many studies have been carried through Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT) of paraffin; therefore the formed crystals are responsible for the modification of the reologics properties of the oil, causing a lot off operational problems. From the determination of the WAT of a system it is possible to affirm if oil presents or not trend to the formation of organic deposits, making possible to foresee and to prevent problems of wax crystallization. The solvent n-paraffin has been widely used as fluid of perforation, raising the production costs when it is used in the removal paraffin deposits, needing an operational substitute. This study aims to determine the WAT of paraffin and the interference off additives in its reduction, being developed system paraffin/solvent/surfactant that propitiates the wax solubilization. Crystallization temperatures in varied paraffin concentrations and different solvents were established in the first stage of the experiments. In the second stage, using the methodology of variation of the photoelectric signal had been determined the temperature of crystallization of the systems and evaluated the interferences of additives to reduction of the WAT. The experimental results are expressed in function of the variations of the photoelectric signals during controlled cooling, innovating and validating this new methodology to determine WAT, relatively simple with relation the other applied that involve specific equipments and of high cost. Through the curves you differentiate of the results had been also identified to the critical stages of growth and agglomeration of the crystals that represent to the saturation of the system, indicating difficulties of flow due to the increase of the density

Non-pressure compensating drip hose is widely used for irrigation of vegetables and orchards. One limitation is that the lateral line length must be short to maintain uniformity due to head loss and slope. Any procedure to increase the length is appropriate because it represents low initial cost of the irrigation system. The hypothesis of this research is that it is possible to increase the lateral line length combining two points: using a larger spacing between emitters at the beginning of the lateral line and a smaller one after a certain distance; and allowing a higher pressure variation along the lateral line under an acceptable value of distribution uniformity. To evaluate this hypothesis, a nonlinear programming model (NLP) was developed. The input data are: diameter, roughness coefficient, pressure variation, emitter operational pressure, relationship between emitter discharge and pressure. The output data are: line length, discharge and length of the each section with different spacing between drippers, total discharge in the lateral line, multiple outlet adjustment coefficient, head losses, localized head loss, pressure variation, number of emitters, spacing between emitters, discharge in each emitter, and discharge per linear meter. The mathematical model developed was compared with the lateral line length obtained with the algebraic solution generated by the Darcy-Weisbach equation. The NLP model showed the best results since it generated the greater gain in the lateral line length, maintaining the uniformity and the flow variation under acceptable standards. It had also the lower flow variation, so its adoption is feasible and recommended.

The use of non-pressure compensating drip hose in horticultural and annual cycle fruits is growing in Brazil. In this case, the challenge for designers is getting longer lateral lines with high values of uniformity. The objective of this study was to develop a model to design longer lateral lines using non-pressure compensating drip hose. Using the developed model, the hypotheses to be evaluated were: a) the use of two different spacing between emitters in the same lateral line allows longer length; b) it is possible to get longer lateral lines using high values of pressure variation in the lateral lines since the distribution uniformity stays below allowable limits. A computer program was developed in Delphi based on the model developed and it is able to design lateral lines in level using non-pressure compensating drip hose. The input data are: desired distribution uniformity (DU); initial and final pressure in the lateral line; coefficients of relationship between emitter discharge and pressure head; hose internal diameter; pipe cross-sectional area with the dripper; and roughness coefficient for the Hazen-Williams equation. The program allows calculate the lateral line length with three possibilities: selecting two spacing between emitters and defining the exchange point; using two pre-established spacing between emitters and calculating the length of each section with different spacing; using one emitter spacing. Results showed that the use of two sections with different spacing between drippers in the lateral line didn't allow longer length but got better uniformity when compared with lateral line with one spacing between emitters. The adoption of two spacing increased the flow rate per meter in the final section which represented approximately 80% of the lateral line total length and this justifies their use. The software allowed DU above 90% with pressure head variation of 40% and the use of two spacing between emitters. The developed model/software showed to be accurate, easy to handle and useful for lateral line design using non-pressure compensating drip hose.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Pulse pressure variations (PPVs) and stroke volume variations (SVVs) are dynamic indices for predicting fluid responsiveness in intensive care unit patients. These hemodynamic markers underscore Frank-Starling law by which volume expansion increases cardiac output (CO). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the administration of catecholamines on PPV, SVV, and inferior vena cava flow (IVCF). METHODS: In this prospective, physiologic, animal study, hemodynamic parameters were measured in deeply sedated and mechanically ventilated pigs. Systemic hemodynamic and pressure-volume loops obtained by inferior vena cava occlusion were recorded. Measurements were collected during two conditions, that is, normovolemia and hypovolemia, generated by blood removal to obtain a mean arterial pressure value lower than 60 mm Hg. At each condition, CO, IVCF, SVV, and PPV were assessed by catheters and flow meters. Data were compared between the conditions normovolemia and hypovolemia before and after intravenous administrations of norepinephrine and epinephrine using a nonparametric Wilcoxon test. RESULTS: Eight pigs were anesthetized, mechanically ventilated, and equipped. Both norepinephrine and epinephrine significantly increased IVCF and decreased PPV and SVV, regardless of volemic conditions (p < 0.05). However, epinephrine was also able to significantly increase CO regardless of volemic conditions. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that intravenous administrations of norepinephrine and epinephrine increase IVCF, whatever the volemic conditions are. The concomitant decreases in PPV and SVV corroborate the fact that catecholamine administration recruits unstressed blood volume. In this regard, understanding a decrease in PPV and SVV values, after catecholamine administration, as an obvious indication of a restored volemia could be an outright misinterpretation.

ABSTRACT This aim of this dissertation is a theoretical and numerical analysis of an electrospray. In its most simple configuration, a constant flow rate of the liquid to be atomized, which has to be an electrical conductor, is injected into a dielectric medium (a gas or another inmiscible fluid) through a metallic capillary tube. A constant voltage is applied between this tube and a distant electrode that produces an electric field in the liquid and the surrounding medium. This electric field induces an electric current in the liquid that accumulates charge at its surface and leads to electric stresses that stretch the surface in the direction of the electric field. A meniscus appears on the end of the capillary tube when the electric field is sufficiently high and the flow rate is small. Pressure variations and viscous stresses due to the motion of the liquid are negligible in most of the meniscus, where normal electric and surface tension stresses acting on the surface are dominant. In the so-called cone-jet mode, the balance of these stresses forces the surface to adopt a conical shape -Taylor cone- in a intermediate region between the end of the tube and the tip of the meniscus. When approaching the cone apex, the velocity of the liquid increases and leads to pressure variations that eventually disturb the balance of surfaces tension and electric stresses. A thin jet emerges then from the tip of the meniscus that transports the charge accumulated at its surface. The electric field tangent to the surface of the jet acts on this charge and continuously stretches the jet. This electric force is negligible in the meniscus, where the component of the electric field tangent to the surface is small, but becomes very important in the jet. Far from the cone, the jet can either develop an asymmetrical instability named “whipping”, whereby the jet winds into a spiral, or break into a spray of small, nearly monodisperse, charged droplets. The electric current transported by the liquid has two components, the conduction current in the bulk of the liquid and the convection current due to the transport of the surface charge by the flow. The first component dominates in the meniscus, the second one in the far jet, and both are comparable in a current transfer region located in the jet downstream of the cone-jet transition region where the meniscus ceases to be a Taylor cone. Given an external electric field, the charge that accumulates at the surface of the liquid reduces the electric field inside the liquid, until an equilibrium is reached in which the electric field induced by the surface charge counters the external electric field and shields the liquid from this field. The characteristic time of this process is the electric relaxation time, which is a property of the liquid. When the residence time of the liquid in the cone-jet transition region (or in other region of the flow) is greater than the electric relaxation time, the surface charge follows a succession of equilibrium states and continuously shield the liquid from the external field. When this condition is not satisfied, charge relaxation effects appear and the external field penetrates into the liquid unless the liquid permittivity is large. For very polar liquids, the field due to the polarization charge at the surface prevents the external field from entering the liquid in the cone and in certain region of the jet. The charge at the surface of a conical meniscus intensifies the electric field around the cone, determining its spatial variation up to distances downstream of the apex of the order of the size of the meniscus. This electric field, first computed by Taylor, is independent of the applied voltage. Therefore local flow characteristics and the electric current carried by the jet are also independent of the applied voltage provided the size of the regions that determine these magnitudes are small compared with the size of the meniscus. Many experiments in the literature show the existence of a minimum flow rate below which the cone-jet mode cannot be established. The mean value and the standard deviation of the electrospray droplet size distribution are minimum when the device is operated near the minimum flow rate. There is no complete explanation of the minimum flow rate, even though possible mechanisms have been extensively studied. The existence of a minimum flow rate seems to be connected with the appearance of charge relaxation effects in the transition region. In this dissertation, order of magnitude estimations are worked out that show the dominant balances in the different regions of the asymptotic structure of the solution for different conditions of interest. When the inertia of the liquid plays a role in the cone-jet transition region, the region where most of the electric current is transfered to the surface lies in the jet downstream the cone-jet transition region. When the flow rate decreases to a certain value, charge relaxation effects appear simultaneously in the jet and in the transition region. For smaller values of the flow rate, charge relaxation effects are important in a region of the meniscus larger than the transition region. When viscous forces dominate in the flow in the cone-jet transition region, the current transfer region is located in the jet immediately after the transition region. When flow rate is decreased, charge relaxation effects appears gradually, first in the jet, then in the transition region, and finally in the meniscus. When flow rate is much larger than the cone-jet mode minimum, the meniscus ceases to be a cone. The electric current and the structure of the solution begin to depend on the applied voltage. The flow rate-voltage plane splits into different regions that are analyzed separately. For sufficiently large flow rates, the effect of the inertia of the liquid always becomes greater than the effect of the viscous forces. A set of numerical simulations have been carried out in order to validate the theoretical results. A simplified model of the problem has been devised to compute the flow, the electric field and the surface charge in the meniscus and the jet of an electrospray. The motion of the liquid is assumed to be quasi-unidirectional and described by Cosserat’s approximation for a slender jet. This widely used approximation allows to easily compute multiple configurations and to explore wide ranges of values of the governing parameters, retaining the effects of the viscosity and the inertia of the liquid. Electric fields inside and outside the liquid are coupled and are computed without any simplification using a boundary elements method. The stationary solution of the problem is obtained by means of an iterative method. To explore the parameter space, a solution is first computed for a set of values of the liquid properties, the flow rate and the applied voltage, an then a continuation method is used to find the boundaries of the cone-jet mode domain of existence, where the iterative method ceases to converge. When the inertia of the liquid dominates in the cone-jet transition region, the iterative method ceases to converge for values of the flow rate for which order-of-magnitude estimates first predict charge relaxation effects to be important in the cone and the jet. The electric current computed for values of the flow rate slightly above the minimum for which convergence is obtained seems to agree with estimates worked out for lower flow rates. When viscous forces dominate in the transition region, stationary solutions can be obtained for flow rates significantly smaller than the one for which charge relaxation effects first appear in the transition region. Numerical results obtained for those small values of the flow rate agree with our order of magnitude estimates. Theoretical analyses of two issues that have arisen naturally during the thesis are summarized in two appendices. The first appendix contains a study of the singularity of the electric field that most of the simulations show at the contact line between the liquid and the capillary tube. The electric field near the contact line is analyzed to determine the ranges of geometrical configurations and liquid permittivity where a singularity appears. Further estimates show that this singularity does not entail a failure in the description of the problem and does not affect the solution far from the contact line. The infinite electric stresses that appear at the contact line can be effectively balanced by surface tension. The second appendix contains an analysis of the size and slenderness of the shielded region of a dielectric liquid in the absence of free surface charge. In this region, the external electric field is partially offset by the polarization charge so that the inner electric field is much lower than the outer one. A similar region appears in the estimates when charge relaxation effects are important in the current transfer region.

Ocean Drilling Program Legs 170 and 205 offshore Costa Rica provide structural observations which support a new model for the geometry and deformation response to the seismic cycle of the frontal sedimentary prism and decollement. The model is based on drillcore, thin section, and electron microscope observations. The decollement damage zone is a few tens of meters in width, it develops mainly within the frontal prism. A clear cm-thick fault core is observed 1.6 km from the trench. The lower boundary of the fault core is coincident with the lithological boundary between the frontal prism and the hemipelagic and pelagic sediment of the Cocos plate. Breccia clast distributions in the upper portion of the decollement damage zone were studied through fractal analysis. This analysis shows that the fractal dimension changes with brecciated fragment size, implying that deformation was not accommodated by self-similar fracturing. A higher fractal dimensionality correlates with smaller particle size, which indicates that different or additional grain-size reduction processes operated during shearing. The co-existence of two distinct fracturing processes is also confirmed by microscopic analysis in which extension fracturing in the upper part of the damage zone farthest from the fault core is frequent, while both extension and shear fracturing occur approaching the fault core. The coexistence of extensional and shear fracturing seems to be best explained by fluid pressure variations in response to variations of the compressional regime during the seismic cycle. During the co-seismic event, sub-horizontal compression and fluid pressure increase, triggering shear fracturing and fluid expulsion. Fractures migrate upward with fluids, contributing to the asymmetric shape of the decollement, while slip propagates. In the inter-seismic interval the frontal prismrelaxes and fluid pressure drops. The frontal prismgoes into diffuse extension during the intervalwhen plate convergence is accommodated by creep along the ductile fault core. The fault core is typically a barrier to deformation, which is explained by its weak, but impermeable, nature. The localized development of a damage zone beneath the fault core is characterized by shear fracturing that appears as the result of local strengthening of the detachment.

A novel and highly sensitive liquid level sensor based on a polymer optical fiber Bragg grating (POFBG) is experimentally demonstrated. Two different configurations are studied and both configurations show the potential to interrogate liquid level by measuring the strain induced in a POFBG embedded in a silicone rubber diaphragm, which deforms due to hydrostatic pressure variations. The sensor exhibits a highly linear response over the sensing range and a good repeatability. For comparison, a similar sensor using a FBG inscribed in silica fiber is fabricated, which displays a sensitivity that is a factor of 5 smaller than the POFBG. The temperature sensitivity is studied and a novel multi-sensor arrangement proposed which has the potential to provide level readings independent of temperature and the liquid density.
