The potentiality of the use of ultrasound radiation in association with a boron-doped diamond electrode was evaluated on the voltammetric determination of the pesticide carbaryl. Improvements in the sensitivity, limit of detection and reproducibility of the measurements were observed due to both, the enhancement of mass transport and the cleaning of the electrode surface provided by ultrasound. Satisfactory recovery levels for carbaryl in pure water (96-98%) and pineapple juice (89-92%) for quiescent and sonovoltammetric methodologies were obtained. These methodologies can be alternative tools for the analyses of pesticides in fruit samples, mainly the insonated condition that improve the analytical performance and dispense intermediary cleanings of the electrode surface.

OBJECTIVES: to assess quality of the primary care using respiratory diseases as a tracer. METHODS: the evaluative approach is based on Donabedian's referencial connected to Kessner's tracers methodology. The sample is formed by 768 children from 0 to 5 years old, presenting respiratory symptoms, attended at seven basic health units from the Sanitary District of Brasilândia, in the city of São Paulo, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Medical registrations and interviews with mothers or responsibles were the information sources. RESULTS: more accurate child medical examination evidences significant association with favorable evolution, mainly on moderate clinical forms. Although aspects related to the accessibility demonstrated by the health team seem to influence decisively on care quality evaluated by users, mainly the medical doctor. Mothers education level appears to have no influence in the favorable evolution. CONCLUSIONS: the tracer methodology has the potentiality to facilitate the critical analysis of the health care. It is important to focus on the outcome of the health care. The children respiratory diseases are important tracer for the quality assessment on health services.

Caracterizar a limitação funcional, de atividade, consciência de risco, e restrição à participação social em pessoas atingidas pela hanseníase no pós-alta. Estudo seccional-descritivo com 69 residentes em Sobral, Ceará, com alta entre 2003 a 2005. Foram realizados exame físico dermato-neurológico, avaliação demográfica, de limitação funcional-atividade-consciência de risco e de restrição à participação social. Vinte (28,9%) apresentaram escores SALSA 19 e 20 e escore EHF zero. O maior escore EHF foi alcançado por dois participantes, com 25 e 28 na escala SALSA. Na escala de participação 37 (53,6%) não apresentaram restrição e tinham escore EHF zero. Dois (2,9%) com escore EHF zero tinham leve restrição e 1 (1,5%), grande restrição. Reafirma-se a potencialidade destas ferramentas para a atenção integral aos portadores.

Coupling of a flow cell based on a liquid core waveguide (LCW) to flow systems for spectro photometric measurements was critically evaluated. Flow-based systems with and without chemical reactions were exploited to estimate the increase in analytical signal in comparison to those obtained with a conventional I cm cell under different experimental conditions. The Schlieren effect associated to intense concentration gradients in the sample zone was investigated with model solutions that do not absorb visible electromagnetic radiation. The effect of radiation scattering was lower than the expected by considering the increase in the optical path, being the magnitude of the perturbation up to 40% higher for the 100-cm LCW cell. Several alternatives for compensation of the Schlieren effect were experimentally investigated. The potentiality of the LCW for turbidimetric measurements and coupling to monosegmented flow analysis was also evaluated. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A secure communication system based on the error-feedback synchronization of the electronic model of the particle-in-a-box system is proposed. This circuit allows a robust and simple electronic emulation of the mechanical behavior of the collisions of a particle inside a box, exhibiting rich chaotic behavior. The required nonlinearity to emulate the box walls is implemented in a simple way when compared with other analog electronic chaotic circuits. A master/slave synchronization of two circuits exhibiting a rich chaotic behavior demonstrates the potentiality of this system to secure communication. In this system, binary data stream information modulates the bifurcation parameter of the particle-in-a-box electronic circuit in the transmitter. In the receiver circuit, this parameter is estimated using Pecora-Carroll synchronization and error-feedback synchronization. The performance of the demodulation process is verified through the eye pattern technique applied on the recovered bit stream. During the demodulation process, the error-feedback synchronization presented better performance compared with the Pecora-Carroll synchronization. The application of the particle-in-a-box electronic circuit in a secure communication system is demonstrated.

The inverse Weibull distribution has the ability to model failure rates which are quite common in reliability and biological studies. A three-parameter generalized inverse Weibull distribution with decreasing and unimodal failure rate is introduced and studied. We provide a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical properties of the new distribution including expressions for the moment generating function and the rth generalized moment. The mixture model of two generalized inverse Weibull distributions is investigated. The identifiability property of the mixture model is demonstrated. For the first time, we propose a location-scale regression model based on the log-generalized inverse Weibull distribution for modeling lifetime data. In addition, we develop some diagnostic tools for sensitivity analysis. Two applications of real data are given to illustrate the potentiality of the proposed regression model.

Ethylene oxide (EO) is used to sterilize Oxygenator and Tubing applied to heart surgery. Residual levels of EO and its derivatives, ethylene chlorohydrin (ECH) and ethylene glycol (EG), may be hazardous to the patients. Therefore, it must be removed by the aeration process. This study aimed to estimate the minimum aeration time for these devices to attain safe limits for use (avoiding excessive aeration time) and to evaluate the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a biosensor capable of best indicating the distribution and penetration of EO gas throughout the sterilization chamber. Sterilization cycles of 2, 4, and 8 h were monitored by Bacillus atrophaeus ATCC 9372 as a biological indicator (131) and by the GFP. Residual levels of EO, ECH, and EG were determined by gas chromatography (GC), and the residual dissipation was studied. Safe limits were reached right after the sterilization process for Oxygenator and after 204 h of aeration for Tubing. In the 2 h cycle, the GFP concentration decreased from 4.8 (+/- 3.2)% to 7.5 (+/- 2.5)%. For the 4 h cycle, the GFP concentration decreased from 17.4 (+/- 3.0)% to 21.5 (+/- 6.8)%, and in the 8 h cycle, it decreased from 22.5 (+/- 3.2)% to 23.9 (+/- 3.9)%. This paper argues, on the basis of a corpus-based study of the meanings of can and may in contemporary British, American and Australian English, that a polysemy-based analysis is applicable to both modals. With may, epistemic possibility is the dominant meaning, but the dynamic and deontic possibility meanings still account for over 16.5% of tokens. By contrast the meanings of can, apart from a small percentage (1.1%) of epistemic cases, are united through the concept of potentiality. Nevertheless there are signs that the epistemic possibility meaning is becoming established, as it sheds its syntactic/semantic restriction to non-affirmative contexts.

Self-assembled materials consisting of V(2)O(5), polyallylamine (PAR) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were obtained by the layer-by-layer (LbL) method, aiming at their application as electrodes for lithium-ion batteries and electrochromic devices. The method employed herein allowed for linear growth of visually homogeneous films composed of V(2)O(5), V(2)O(5)/PAH, and V(2)O(5)/PAH/AgNP with 15 bilayers. According to the Fourier transform infrared spectra, interaction between the oxygen atom of the vanadyl group and the amino group should be responsible for the growth of these films. This interaction also enabled establishment of an electrostatic shield between the lithium ions and the sites with higher negative charge, thereby raising the ionic mobility and consequently increasing the energy storage capacity and reducing the response time. According to the site-saturation model and the electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical results, the presence of PAH in the self-assembled host matrix decreased the number of V(2)O(5) electroactive sites. Thus, AgNPs were stabilized in PAR and inserted into the nanoarchitecture, so as to enhance the specific capacity. This should provide new conducting pathways and connect isolated V(2)O(5) particles in the host matrix. Therefore, new nanoarchitectures for specific interactions were formed spontaneously and chosen as examples in this work, aiming to demonstrate the potentiality of the adopted self-assembled method for enhancing the charge transport rate into the host matrices. The obtained materials displayed suitable properties for use as electrodes in lithium batteries and electrochromic devices.

Purposes: To evaluate the dosimetric effect of outpatient radioiodine therapy for thyroid cancer in members of a patient`s family and their living environment, when using iodine-131 doses reaching 7.4 GBq. The following parameters were thus defined: (a) whole-body radiation doses to caregivers, (b) the production of contaminated solid waste, and (c) radiation potential and surface contamination within patients` living quarters. Methods: In total, 100 patients were treated on an outpatient basis, taking into consideration their acceptable living conditions, interests, and willingness to comply with medical and radiation safety guidelines. Both the caregivers and the radiation dose potentiality inside patients` residences were monitored by using thermoluminescent dosimeters. Surface contamination and contaminated solid wastes were identified and measured with a Geiger-Muller detector. Results: A total of 90 monitored individuals received a mean dose of 0.27 (+/- 0.28) mSv, and the maximum dose registered was 1.6 mSv. The mean value for the potential dose within all living quarters was 0.31(+/- 0.34) mSv, and the mean value per monitored surface was 5.58 Bq/cm(2) for all the 1659 points measured. The overall production of contaminated solid wastes was at a low level, being about 3 times less than the exemption level indicated by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Conclusions: This study indicates that the treatment of thyroid cancer by applying radioiodine activities up to 7.4 GBq, on an outpatient basis, is a safe procedure, especially when supervised by qualified professionals. This alternative therapy should be a topic for careful discussion considering the high potential for reducing costs in healthcare and improving patient acceptance.

Objectives The first objective of this study was to evaluate the radiological impact on relatives and the environment because of outpatient treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma with 3.7 and 5.55 GBq of ((131)I)NaI. The second objective was to determine, analyze, and evaluate whole-body radiation dose to caregivers, the production of contaminated solid waste, and the potentiality of radiation dose and surface contamination existing inside patients` households. Methods Twenty patients were treated on an outpatient basis, taking into consideration their acceptable living conditions, interests, and willingness to comply with medical and radiation-safety guidelines. The caregivers themselves, as well as the potentiality of the radiation dose inside patients` residences, were monitored with a thermo-luminescence dosimeter. Surface contamination and contaminated solid wastes were identified and measured by using a Geiger-Muller detector. Results and discussion Twenty-six monitored individuals received accumulated effective radiation doses of less than 1.0 mSv, and only one 2.8 mSv, throughout the 7 days of measurement. The maximum registered value for the potential of radiation dose inside all living areas was 1.30 mSv. The monitored surface contamination inside patients` dwellings showed a mean value of 4.2 Bq/cm(2) for all surfaces found to be contaminated. A total of 2.5l of contaminated solid waste was generated by the patients with 3.33 MBq of all estimated activity. Conclusion This study revealed that the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma with 3.7 and 5.55 GBq of ((131)I)NaI, on an outpatient basis, can be safe when overseen by qualified professionals and with an adapted radiation-protection guideline. Even considering the radioiodine activity level and the dosimetric methodology applied here, negligible human exposure and a nonmeasurable radiological impact to the human environment were found. The aim of this study was to obtain and to characterize microemulsions containing 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and to investigate the influence of these systems in drug skin permeation for further topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). 5-ALA was incorporated in water-in-oil (W/O), bicontinuous (Bc), and oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions obtained by the titration of ethyl oleate and PEG-8 caprylic/capric glycerides:polyglyceryl-6 dioleate (3:1) mixtures with water. Selected systems were characterized by conductivity, viscosity, size of the droplets, and drug release. The stability of the drug in the microemulsions was also assessed. Moreover, the in vitro and in vivo skin permeation of 5-ALA was investigated using diffusion cells and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM), respectively. Despite the fact that the O/W microemulsion decreased the 5-ALA diffusion coefficient and retarded the drug release, it also significantly increased the in vitro drug skin permeation when compared to other 5-ALA carriers. It was observed by CSLM that the red fluorescence of the skin increased homogeneously in the deeper skin layers when the 5-ALA microemulsion was applied in vivo, probably due to the formation of the photoactive protoporphyrin IX. The microemulsion developed carried 5-ALA to the deeper skin layers, increasing the red fluorescence of the skin and indicating the potentiality of the system for topical 5-ALA-PDT. Investiga as relações entre a formação continuada de professores e as práticas de partilha das experiências construídas na atuação docente nos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental, numa escola da Rede Municipal de Ensino de Marilândia–ES. Questiona, com base nas narrativas de cinco professoras, como a experiência compartilhada nos processos de formação continuada de professores dos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental na Rede Municipal de Ensino de Marilândia–ES é vivida e percebida por elas e quais sentidos são produzidos sobre a formação continuada. Pressupõe a perspectiva de uma formação continuada em processo, ao longo da vida, desenvolvida em redes coletivas de trabalho e partilha de experiências no cotidiano escolar e na vida das professoras. Em face dessa complexidade, a pesquisa de caráter qualitativo e abordagem metodológica ancorada na pesquisa narrativa (auto)biográfica tem, como procedimentos de investigação, as entrevistas biográficas direcionadas para a construção de narrativas orais e escritas, a observação participante dos sujeitos da pesquisa em momentos formativos instituídos, a análise de documentos da Secretaria Municipal de Educação de Marilândia e da escola e a aplicação de questionário para composição de dados acerca do perfil dos sujeitos da pesquisa. A definição do caminho metodológico deste estudo teve inspiração em Benjamin e Larrosa e, no campo da formação de professores, sustentação nos referenciais de Nóvoa, Souza, Freire e Giroux. Os resultados apontam uma variedade de sentidos sobre a formação continuada de professores, desde formas mais institucionalizadas até iniciativas menos formais, vividas por meio da partilha de experiências e de processos (auto)formativos, que contribuem para o desenvolvimento pessoal e profissional do professor e organizacional da escola, de modo mais aproximado do trabalho pedagógico na unidade escolar e na sala de aula. Aponta a necessidade da valorização das experiências dos professores e do investimento no estudo das práticas. Considera a existência, entre os professores, de uma responsividade compartilhada sobre a formação do outro, compondo um coletivo instituinte na escola. Assinala a potencialidade da pesquisa narrativa (auto)biográfica como opção metodológica que possibilita o entrecruzamento dos movimentos investigativos e formativos.

An optically addressed read-write sensor based on two stacked p-i-n heterojunctions is analyzed. The device is a two terminal image sensing structure. The charge packets are injected optically into the p-i-n writer and confined at the illuminated regions changing locally the electrical field profile across the p-i-n reader. An optical scanner is used for charge readout. The design allows a continuous readout without the need for pixel-level patterning. The role of light pattern and scanner wavelengths on the readout parameters is analyzed. The optical-to-electrical transfer characteristics show high quantum efficiency, broad spectral response, and reciprocity between light and image signal. A numerical simulation supports the imaging process. A black and white image is acquired with a resolution around 20 mum showing the potentiality of these devices for imaging applications.
