Work in the area of molecule-based magnetic and/or conducting materials is presented in two projects. The first project describes the use of 4,4’-bipyridine as a scaffold for the preparation of a new family of tetracarboxamide ligands. Four new ligands I-III have been prepared and characterized and the coordination chemistry of these ligands is presented. This project was then extended to exploit 4,4’-bipyridine as a covalent linker between two N3O2 macrocyles. In this respect, three dimeric macrocycles have been prepared IV-VI. Substitution of the labile axial ligands of the Co(II) complex IV by [Fe(CN)6]4- afforded the self-assembly of the 1-D polymeric chain {[Co(N3O2)H2O]2Fe(CN)6}n•3H2O that has been structurally and magnetically characterized. Magnetic studies on the Fe(II) complexes V and VI indicate that they undergo incomplete spin crossover transitions in the solid state. Strategies for the preparation of chiral spin crossover N3O2 macrocycles are discussed and the synthesis of the novel chiral Fe(II) macrocyclic complex VII is reported. Magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer studies reveal that this complex undergoes a gradual spin crossover in the solid state with no thermal hysteresis. Variable temperature X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals of VII reveal interesting structural changes in the coordination geometry of the macrocycle accompanying its SCO transition. The second project reports the synthesis and characterization of a new family of tetrathiafulvalene derivatives VIII – XII, where a heterocyclic chelating ligand is appended to a TTF donor via an imine linker. The coordination chemistries of these ligands with M(hfac)2.H2O (M( = Co, Ni, Mn, Cu) have been explored and the structural and magnetic properties of these complexes are described.

The tridentate Schiff base ligand, 7-amino-4-methyl-5-aza-3-hepten-2-one (HAMAH), prepared by the mono-condensation of 1,2diaminoethane and acetylacetone, reacts with Cu(BF4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to produce initially a dinuclear Cu(II) complex, [{Cu(AMAH)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipyJ](BF4)(2) (1) which undergoes hydrolysis in the reaction mixture and finally produces a linear polymeric chain compound, [Cu(acac)(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)](n) (2). The geometry around the copper atom in compound 1 is distorted square planar while that in compound 2 is essentially an elongated octahedron. On the other hand, the ligand HAMAH reacts with Cu(ClO4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to yield a polymeric zigzag chain, [{Cu(acac)(CH3OH)(mu-4,4'-bipy)}(ClO4)](n) (3). The geometry of the copper atom in 3 is square pyramidal with the two bipyridine molecules in the cis equatorial positions. All three complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A probable explanation for the different size and shape of the reported polynuclear complexes formed by copper(II) and 4,4'-bipyridine has been put forward by taking into account the denticity and crystal field strength of the blocking ligand as well as the Jahn-Teller effect in copper(II). Three new polynuclear copper(II) complexes of singly deprotonated L-glutamic acid (L-glu), {[Cu(bipy)(2)][Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O](2)(BF4)(4)center dot(H2O)(3)}(n) (1), {[Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O][Cu(bipy)(L-glu)(ClO4)]( ClO4)center dot(H2O)(2)}(n) ((2)) and [Cu(phen)(L-glu)H2O](2)(NO3)(2)center dot(H2O)(4) (3) (bipy = 2,2-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), were synthesized in acidic pH (ca. 2.5) and characterized structurally. In all the complexes, L-glutamic acid acts as a bidentate chelating ligand, leaving the protonated carboxylic acid free. Both in 1 and 2, two different types of species [Cu(bipy)(2)](BF4)(2) and [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O] BF4 for 1 and [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O]ClO4 and [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)(ClO4)] for 2 coexist in the solid state. In complex 1, the [C( bipy)(L-glu)H2O]+ units are joined together by syn-anti carboxylate bridges to form an enantiopure (M) helical chain and the [Cu(bipy)(2)](2+) presents a very rare example of the four-coordinate distorted tetrahedral geometry of Cu(II). In complex 2, the [Cu(bipy)(L gluClO(4))] units are joined together by weakly coordinating perchlorate ions to form a 1D polymeric chain while the [Cu(bipy)(L-glu)H2O]+ units remain as mononuclear species. The different coordinating ability of the two counter anions along with their involvement in the H-bonding network seems likely to be responsible for the difference in the final polymeric structures in the two compounds. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show negligible coupling for both the complexes. The structure of 3 consists of two independent monomeric [Cu(phen)(L-glu)H2O]+ cations, two nitrate anions and four water molecules. The copper atom occupies a five-coordinate square pyramidal environment with a water molecule in the axial position.

Electrochemical reduction of the triangular clusters [Os-3(CO)(10)(alpha-dimine)] (alpha-dimine = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym)) and [Os-3(CO)(10)(mu-bpym) ReBr(CO)(3)] produces primarily the corresponding radical anions. Their stability is strongly determined by the pi acceptor ability of the reducible alpha-dimine ligand, which decreases in the order mu-bpym > bpym >> bpy. Along this series, increasing delocalisation of the odd electron density in the radical anion over the Os(alpha-dimine) chelate ring causes weakening of the axial (CO)(4)Os-Os(CO)(2)(alpha-dimine) bond and its facile cleavage for alpha-diimine = bpy. In contrast, the cluster radical anion is inherently stable for the bridging bpym ligand, the strongest pi-acceptor in the studied series. In the absence of the partial delocalisation of the unpaired electron over the Re( bpym) chelate bond, the Os-3-core of the radical anion remains intact only at low temperatures. Subsequent one-electron reduction of [Os-3(CO)(10)(bpym)](center dot-) at T = 223 K gives the open-triosmium core (= Os-3*) dianion, [Os-3*(CO)(10)(bpym)](2-). Its oxidation leads to the recovery of parent [Os-3(CO)(10)( bpym)]. At room temperature, [Os-3*( CO)(10)(bpym)](2-) is formed along a two-electron (ECE) reduction path. The chemical step (C) results in the formation of an open- core radical anion that is directly reducible at the cathodic potential of the parent cluster in the second electrochemical (E) step. In weakly coordinating tetrahydrofuran, [Os-3*(CO)(10)( bpym)](2-) rapidly attacks yet non- reduced parent cluster molecules, producing the relatively stable open- core dimer [Os-3*(CO)(10)(bpym)](2)(2-) featuring two open- triangle cluster moieties connected with an ( bpym) Os - Os( bpym) bond. In butyronitrile, [Os-3*( CO)(10)(bpym)](2-) is stabilised by the solvent and the dimer [Os-3*(CO)(10)(bpym)](2)(2-) is then mainly formed by reoxidation of the dianion on reverse potential scan. The more reactive cluster [Os-3(CO)(10)(bpy)] follows the same reduction path, as supported by spectroelectrochemical results and additional valuable evidence obtained from cyclic voltammetric scans. The ultimate process in the reduction mechanism is fragmentation of the cluster core triggered by the reduction of the dimer [Os-3*(CO)(10)(alpha- diimine)](2)(2-). The products formed are [Os-2(CO)(8)](2-) and {Os(CO)(2)(alpha- diimine)}(2). The latter dinuclear fragments constitute a linear polymeric chain [Os( CO)(2)(alpha-dimine)] n that is further reducible at the alpha-dimine ligands. For alpha-dimine = bpy, the charged polymer is capable of reducing carbon dioxide. The electrochemical opening of the triosmium core in the [Os-3( CO)(10)(alpha-dimine)] clusters exhibits several common features with their photochemistry. The same Os-alpha-dimine bond dissociates in both cases but the intimate mechanisms are different.

[Ru2(μ-O2CCH3)4Cl] reacts readily with aqueous Ag2SO4 (2: 1 molar ratio) to give the sulphate salt [Ru2(μ-O2CCH3)4(H2O)2]2(SO4) (1). Addition of NaBPh4 to an aqueous solution of 1 produces the ether-soluble tetraphenylborate salt [Ru2(μ-O2CCH3)4(H2O)2][BPh4] (2). A methanolic solution of 1 reacts with Ba(C6H5CCCO2)2 · H2O to give the tetraacetatemonophenylpropynoate complex [Ru2(μ-O2CCH3)4(O2CCCC6H5)] · H2O (3). The reaction of an ethanolic suspension of [Ru2(μ-O2CC6H5)4Cl] with Ag2SO4 and H2SO4 (2 : 1 : 1 molar ratio) leads to the tetra-μ-benzoatodiruthenium(II,III) double complex salt [Ru2(μ-O2CC6H5)4(C2H5OH)2][Ru2(μ-O2CC6H5)4(HSO4)2] (4). Complex 4 is also obtained by reacting an ethanolic solution of 1 with an excess of benzoic acid in the presence of H2SO4. The X-ray crystal structure of 4 shows it to consist of [Ru2(μ-O2CC6H5)4(C2H5OH)2]+ and [Ru2(μ-O2CC6H5)4(HSO4)2]− ions, which are linked together by hydrogen bonds into an infinite polymeric chain. The RuRu distances in the cation and anion are very similar [2.265(2) and 2.272(2) Å, respectively]. Spectroscopic, magnetic, conductivity and cyclic voltammetry data are given for the complexes.

Catalytic processes are widely present in everyday life. This results in large number of studies seeking materials that may combine the low cost catalytic efficiency. Based on this assumption, the clays have long been used as catalysts, with its huge availability, diversity and possibility of improving their properties from structural changes, primarily responsible for this great use. Among the natural clays, vermiculite due to their characteristic properties (high cation exchange capacity and expansion), is suitable for various applications including as catalysts and catalyst supports. In this work, the acid leaching of clay vermiculite was performed, coming from Santa Luzia-PB, with nitric acid (2, 3 and 4 mol / L) and subsequent calcination of the materials obtained. The materials were named as Vx/400, where x is the acid concentration employed and 400 used in calcination temperature. The effectiveness of changes made was determined by XRD techniques, FT-IR, EDS, TG/DTG, nitrogen physisorption and DTP of n-butylamine. Acid leaching has improved some properties of the clay - specific area and acidity - but the control of the acid concentration used is of vital importance, since the highest concentration caused the partial destruction of vermiculite entailing a decline in their properties. For analysis of the catalytic activity of the modified clay was made a comparative study with the SBA -15 mesoporous materials, synthesized via hydrothermal method, using the pyrolysis of low density polyethylene (LDPE). The results showed that the acid plays a fundamental role in the conversion of the polymer into smaller molecules, the material V3/400 was more selective for the source monomer (ethylene) due to their increased acidity, which promotes more breaks bonds in the polymeric chain, while materials and V0/400 V2/400, lower acidity, showed higher selectivity to light hydrocarbons, the range of fuel (41.96 and 41.23%, respectively), due to less breakage and secondary condensation reactions chains; already V4/400 SBA-15/550 and resulted in lower percentages of light hydrocarbons and the partial destruction of the structure and low acidity, respectively, responsible for the inefficiency of materials

A room temperature ferromagnetic phase is observed in samples of poly(3-hexylthiophene) partially doped with ClO (4) over bar. The magnetic behavior presents a strong dependence on the sample preparation conditions, in particular, a dependence with the final potential of the sample after reduction. The origin of the ferromagnetism is proposed to be associated with interactions between spin 1/2 polarons formed in the polymeric chain upon doping. The dependence of saturation and spontaneous magnetization as the function of the final potential after reduction shows a way to control the magnetic properties of this polymer. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of SiO2:metal (Ni, Co, Ag, and Fe) nanocomposites processed by the polymerizable complex method. The polymeric precursor solutions obtained were characterized by means of FT-Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The results show the formation of a hybrid polymer with carbon and silicon in the macromolecule chain and the transition metal cation arrested within this polymeric chain. The nanocomposites are formed during the controlled polymeric precursor pyrolysis. The reduction of the metal cation is promoted by the CO/CO2 atmosphere resulting from the pyrolysis of the organic material. Microstructural characterization, performed by TEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showed that the nanocomposites are formed by metal nanoparticles embedded in a amorphous matrix formed by SiO2 and carbon. In the SiO2:Fe system, Fe3C was also detected by XRD.

Siloxane-polypropyleneoxide (PPO) hybrids doped with sodium perchlorate (NaClO4) obtained by the sol-gel process were prepared with two PPO molecular weights (2000 and 4000 g/mol) and two sodium concentrations such as [O]/[Na] = 4 and 15 (O being the ether-type oxygen of PPO chains). The structure of these hybrids was investigated by Na-23 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the sodium K-edge (1071.8 eV) whereas complex impedance spectroscopy was used to determine their ionic conductivity. Three sodium sites were determined by NMR. The conjunction of NMR and X-ray absorption results allows us to identify one site in which Na is in a NaCl structure, a second one in which Na is in contact with perchlorate anions. The third site is attributed to mobile sodium species in interaction with the polymeric chain. The relative proportion of the different sites in the materials determines the ionic conductivity of the materials at room temperature: the largest ionic conductivity is 8.9 x 10(-6) Omega(-1) cm(-1) and is observed on the material with the larger amount (at least 85%) of sites in which sodium interacts with the polymer. Nowadays, the research for new and better antimicrobial compounds is an important field due to the increase of immunocompromised patients, the use of invasive medical procedures and extensive surgeries, among others, that can affect the incidence of infections. Another big problem associated is the occurrence of drug-resistant microbial strains that impels a ceaseless search for new antimicrobial agents. In this context, a series of heterocyclic- sulfonamide complexes with Co(II) was synthesized and characterized with the aim of obtaining new antimicrobial compounds. The structural characterization was performed using different spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis, IR, and EPR). In spite of the fact that the general stoichiometry for all the complexes was Co(sulfonamide)2·nH2O, the coordination atoms were different depending on the coordinated sulfonamide. The crystal structure of [Co(sulfamethoxazole)2(H2O)2]·H 2O was obtained by X-ray diffraction showing that Co(II) is in a slightly tetragonal distorted octahedron where sulfamethoxazole molecules act as a head-to-tail bridges between two cobalt atoms, forming polymeric chains. Besides, the activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, one of the responsible for tuberculosis, and the cytotoxicity on J774A.1 macrophage cells were evaluated. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
