This paper describes a novel obstacle detection system for autonomous robots in agricultural field environments that uses a novelty detector to inform stereo matching. Stereo vision alone erroneously detects obstacles in environments with ambiguous appearance and ground plane such as in broad-acre crop fields with harvested crop residue. The novelty detector estimates the probability density in image descriptor space and incorporates image-space positional understanding to identify potential regions for obstacle detection using dense stereo matching. The results demonstrate that the system is able to detect obstacles typical to a farm at day and night. This system was successfully used as the sole means of obstacle detection for an autonomous robot performing a long term two hour coverage task travelling 8.5 km.

This paper presents preliminary results of an investigation into the detection of partial discharges on the rise of impulse voltages from a point-to-plane gap in SF6. A parallel RC detection impedance is placed in the earth path of a point. Computer simulations are done to determine the values of R and C that will result in the smallest impulse voltage signal and the largest discharge signal across the detection impedance. These simulations and the experimental work show that the impulse voltage signal can not be sufficiently attenuated during the rise time of the applied voltage impulse using the RC detection impedance alone. An alternative discharge detection method is proposed in which a resonant partial discharge coupler is used. Elimination of noise and the impulse voltage signal can be achieved by shorting the coupler plate to the ground plane in the middle of the disk. However, due to the bandwidth of the measuring equipment and noise from the impulse generator it was not possible to detect discharges on the rising edge of a 1.5s voltage impulse using a coupler shorted in the middle. It was found that for this particular coupler, with no shorting points, and if the rising edge of the voltage impulse is longer than 5us, (10us) PD activity can be detected on the rising edge.

A modified linear prediction (MLP) method is proposed in which the reference sensor is optimally located on the extended line of the array. The criterion of optimality is the minimization of the prediction error power, where the prediction error is defined as the difference between the reference sensor and the weighted array outputs. It is shown that the L2-norm of the least-squares array weights attains a minimum value for the optimum spacing of the reference sensor, subject to some soft constraint on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). How this minimum norm property can be used for finding the optimum spacing of the reference sensor is described. The performance of the MLP method is studied and compared with that of the linear prediction (LP) method using resolution, detection bias, and variance as the performance measures. The study reveals that the MLP method performs much better than the LP technique.

In order to describe the atmospheric turbulence which limits the resolution of long-exposure images obtained using ground-based large telescopes, a simplified model of a speckle pattern, reducing the complexity of calculating field-correlations of very high order, is presented. Focal plane correlations are used instead of correlations in the spatial frequency domain. General tripple correlations for a point source and for a binary are calculated and it is shown that they are not a strong function of the binary separation. For binary separations close to the diffraction limit of the telescope, the genuine triple correlation technique ensures a better SNR than the near-axis Knox-Thompson technique. The simplifications allow a complete analysis of the noise properties at all levels of light.

For the specific case of binary stars, this paper presents signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) calculations for the detection of the parity (the side of the brighter component) of the binary using the double correlation method. This double correlation method is a focal plane version of the well-known Knox-Thompson method used in speckle interferometry. It is shown that SNR for parity detection using double correlation depends linearly on binary separation. This new result was entirely missed by previous analytical calculations dealing with a point source. It is concluded that, for magnitudes relevant to the present day speckle interferometry and for binary separations close to the diffraction limit, speckle masking has better SNR for parity detection.

Nonpolar a-GaN (11-20) epilayers were grown on r-plane (1-102) sapphire substrates using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution x-ray diffractometer confirmed the orientation of the grown film. Effect of the Ga/N ratio on the morphology and strain of a-GaN epilayers was compared and the best condition was obtained for the nitrogen flow of 1 sccm. Atomic force microscopy was used to analyze the surface morphology while the strain in the film was quantitatively measured using Raman spectroscopy and qualitatively analyzed by reciprocal space mapping technique. UV photo response of a-GaN film was measured after fabricating a metal-semiconductor-metal structure over the film with gold metal. The external quantum efficiency of the photodetectors fabricated in the (0002) polar and (11-20) nonpolar growth directions were compared in terms of responsivity and nonpolar GaN showed the best sensitivity at the cost of comparatively slow response time. Ferrocene-terminated self-assembled monolayers (Fc-SAMs) are one of the most studied molecular aggregates on metal electrodes. They are easy to fabricate and provide a stable and reproducible system to investigate the effect of the microenvironment on the electron transfer parameters. We propose a novel application for Fc-SAMs, the detection of molecular interactions, based on the modification of the SAM with target-specific receptors. Mixed SAMs were fabricated by coimmobilization on Au electrodes of thiolated alkane chains with three different head groups: hydroxy terminating head group, ferrocene head group, and a functional head group such as biotin. Upon binding, the intrinsic electric charge of the target (e.g., streptavidin) modifies the electrostatic potential at the plane of electron transfer, causing a shift in the formal potential E degrees '. The SAMs were characterized by AC voltammetry. The detection mechanism is confirmed by measurements of formal potential as a function of electrolyte pH.

A symmetry-extended Maxwell treatment of the net mobility of periodic bar-and-joint frameworks is used to derive a sufficient condition for auxetic behaviour of a 2D material. The type of auxetic behaviour that can be detected by symmetry has Poisson's ratio -1, with equal expansion/contraction in all directions, and is here termed equiauxetic. A framework may have a symmetry-detectable equiauxetic mechanism if it belongs to a plane group that includes rotational axes of order n = 6, 4, or 3. If the reducible representation for the net mobility contains mechanisms that preserve full rotational symmetry (A modes), these are equiauxetic. In addition, for n = 6, mechanisms that halve rotational symmetry (B modes) are also equiauxetic. © EPLA, 2013.

We propose a simple method to detect the relative strength of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions in quantum wells (QWs) without relying on the directional-dependent physical quantities. This method utilizes the two different critical gate voltages that leading to the remarkable signals of SU(2) symmetry, which happens to reflect the intrinsic-structure-inversion asymmetry of the QW. We support our proposal by the numerical calculation of in-plane relaxation times based on the self-consistent eight-band Kane model. We find that the two different critical gate voltages leading to the maximum spin-relaxation times [one effect of the SU(2) symmetry] can simply determine the ratio of the coefficients of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. Our proposal can also be generalized to extract the relative strengths of the spin-orbit interactions in quantum-wire and quantum-dot structures.

Accurate head tilt detection has a large potential to aid people with disabilities in the use of human-computer interfaces and provide universal access to communication software. We show how it can be utilized to tab through links on a web page or control a video game with head motions. It may also be useful as a correction method for currently available video-based assistive technology that requires upright facial poses. Few of the existing computer vision methods that detect head rotations in and out of the image plane with reasonable accuracy can operate within the context of a real-time communication interface because the computational expense that they incur is too great. Our method uses a variety of metrics to obtain a robust head tilt estimate without incurring the computational cost of previous methods. Our system runs in real time on a computer with a 2.53 GHz processor, 256 MB of RAM and an inexpensive webcam, using only 55% of the processor cycles.

A new approach for global detection of seismic damage in a single-storey steel concentrically braced frame (CBF) structure is presented. The filtered lateral in-plane acceleration response of the CBF structure is integrated twice to provide the lateral in-plane displacement which is used to infer buckling and yielding damage. The level of interstorey drift of the CBF during a seismic excitation allows the yield and buckling of the bracing members to be identified and indirectly detects damage based on exceedance of calculated lateral in-plane displacement limits. A band-pass filter removes noise from the acceleration signal followed by baseline correction being used to reduce the drift in velocity and displacement during numerical integration. This pre-processing results in reliable numerical integration of the frame acceleration that predicts the displacement response accurately when compared to the measured lateral displacement of the CBF structure. Importantly, the structural damage is not assumed through removal of bracing members, rather damage is induced through actual seismic loading. The buckling and yielding displacement threshold limits used to identify damage are demonstrated to accurately identify the initiation of buckling and yielding.

Le mouvement de la marche est un processus essentiel de l'activité humaine et aussi le résultat de nombreuses interactions collaboratives entre les systèmes neurologiques, articulaires et musculo-squelettiques fonctionnant ensemble efficacement. Ceci explique pourquoi une analyse de la marche est aujourd'hui de plus en plus utilisée pour le diagnostic (et aussi la prévention) de différents types de maladies (neurologiques, musculaires, orthopédique, etc.). Ce rapport présente une nouvelle méthode pour visualiser rapidement les différentes parties du corps humain liées à une possible asymétrie (temporellement invariante par translation) existant dans la démarche d'un patient pour une possible utilisation clinique quotidienne. L'objectif est de fournir une méthode à la fois facile et peu dispendieuse permettant la mesure et l'affichage visuel, d'une manière intuitive et perceptive, des différentes parties asymétriques d'une démarche. La méthode proposée repose sur l'utilisation d'un capteur de profondeur peu dispendieux (la Kinect) qui est très bien adaptée pour un diagnostique rapide effectué dans de petites salles médicales car ce capteur est d'une part facile à installer et ne nécessitant aucun marqueur. L'algorithme que nous allons présenter est basé sur le fait que la marche saine possède des propriétés de symétrie (relativement à une invariance temporelle) dans le plan coronal.

Earlier studies showed that the disparity with respect to other visible points could not explain stereoacuity performance, nor could various spatial derivatives of disparity [Glennerster, A., McKee, S. P., & Birch, M. D. (2002). Evidence of surface-based processing of binocular disparity. Current Biology, 12:825-828; Petrov, Y., & Glennerster, A. (2004). The role of the local reference in stereoscopic detection of depth relief. Vision Research, 44:367-376.] Two possible cues remain: (i) local changes in disparity gradient or (ii) disparity with respect to an interpolated line drawn through the reference points. Here, we aimed to distinguish between these two cues. Subjects judged.. in a two AFC paradigm, whether a target dot was in front of a plane defined by three reference dots or, in other experiments, in front of a line defined by two reference dots. We tested different slants of the reference line or plane and different locations of the target relative to the reference points. For slanted reference lines or plane, stereoacuity changed little as the target position was varied. For judgments relative to a frontoparallel reference line, stereoacuity did vary with target position, but less than would be predicted by disparity gradient change. This provides evidence that disparity with respect to the reference plane is an important cue. We discuss the potential advantages of this measure in generating a representation of surface relief that is invariant to viewpoint transformations. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we evaluate the Probabilistic Occupancy Map (POM) pedestrian detection algorithm on the PETS 2009 benchmark dataset. POM is a multi-camera generative detection method, which estimates ground plane occupancy from multiple background subtraction views. Occupancy probabilities are iteratively estimated by fitting a synthetic model of the background subtraction to the binary foreground motion. Furthermore, we test the integration of this algorithm into a larger framework designed for understanding human activities in real environments. We demonstrate accurate detection and localization on the PETS dataset, despite suboptimal calibration and foreground motion segmentation input.

This paper proposes a method to locate and track people by combining evidence from multiple cameras using the homography constraint. The proposed method use foreground pixels from simple background subtraction to compute evidence of the location of people on a reference ground plane. The algorithm computes the amount of support that basically corresponds to the ""foreground mass"" above each pixel. Therefore, pixels that correspond to ground points have more support. The support is normalized to compensate for perspective effects and accumulated on the reference plane for all camera views. The detection of people on the reference plane becomes a search for regions of local maxima in the accumulator. Many false positives are filtered by checking the visibility consistency of the detected candidates against all camera views. The remaining candidates are tracked using Kalman filters and appearance models. Experimental results using challenging data from PETS`06 show good performance of the method in the presence of severe occlusion. Ground truth data also confirms the robustness of the method.
