The prognosis from thyroid cancer subtypes in humans covers a spectrum from "cured at almost 90%" to "100% lethal." Invasive and poorly differentiated forms of thyroid cancer are among the most aggressive human cancers, and there are few effective therapeutic options. Genetically engineered mice, based on mutations observed in patients, can accurately recapitulate the human disease and its progression, providing invaluable tools for the preclinical evaluation of novel therapeutic approaches. This overview details models developed to date as well as their uses for identifying novel anticancer agents. © 2015 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

---------------ABSTRACT: The transfers of dependent patients by healthcare assistants are tasks commonly used in elderly care. Therefore, it is crucial that healthcare assistants are trained to perform these tasks. However, training programs are rarely evaluated in terms of performance of these tasks. Aim: The aims of this study were 1) to determine the impact of healthcare assistant training in the transfers of the Residência São João de Ávila (RSJA) elderly patients; and 2) to analyze healthcare assistant’s perceptions about their education, their specialized training on the transfer technique, and their difficulty in performing transfers. Methods: The study was divided in two parts: an exploratory and descriptive study (self-report questionnaire applied to 25 healthcare assistants); and a quasi-experimental observation study, which involved a “training session on basic concepts and principles of physical rehabilitation” (direct observation of 18 healthcare assistants during the “bed-sitting-chair” transfer, using an observation table). Results: Healthcare assistant performance of the “bed-sitting-chair” transfer improved after training. The healthcare assistants showed positive perceptions about their education and specialized training on the transfer technique. Approximately two thirds of the assistants felt no difficulties in performing transfer tasks. Conclusions: The training had a positive influence in healthcare assistant performance. The healthcare assistants were aware of the importance of training in their profession and more specifically in transfer tasks.

Performing a complete blood count analysis is a daily routine necessary for a good care of patients. Nowadays, modern blood analyzers provide on top of classical blood values, several additional parameters. In this paper, using short case presentations, we discuss how to interpret these results and integrate them in the clinical context.

Introduction: Interprofessional collaborative practices are increasingly recognized as an effective way to deal with complex health problems. However, health sciences students continue to be trained in specialized programs and have little occasion for learning in interdisciplinary contexts. Program Development: The project's purpose was to develop content and an educational design for new prelicensure interfaculty courses on interprofessional collaboration in patient and family-centered care which embedded interprofessional education principles where participants learn with, from and about each other. Implementation: Intensive training was part of a 45-hour program, offered each semester, which was divided into three 15-hour courses given on weekends, to enhance accessibility. Evaluation: A total of 215 students completed questionnaires following the courses, to assess their satisfaction with the educational content. Pre/post measures assessed perception of skills acquisition and perceived benefits of interprofessional collaboration training. Results showed a significant increase from the students' point of view in the knowledge and benefits to be gained from interprofessional collaboration training.

Dyspnea and chest pain are typical reasons for consultations. biomarkers (CRP, procalcitonin, NT-proBNP, troponins, D-dimers) can have an interest for the diagnosis, the prognosis and the follow-up of several pathologies. There are however numerous pitfalls and limitations between the discovery of a biomarker and the utility in clinical practice. It is essential to always estimate a pre-test probability based on an attentive history and a careful physical examination, to know the intrinsic and extrinsic qualities of a test, and to determine a threshold of care. A biomarker should be used only if it modifies the patient's care and if it brings him a benefit compared to the patient who has no biomarker.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disease. Today we are able to propose an adapted and efficient management to the patients with this rare disorder (and their families) thanks to a strong collaboration of clinicians and researchers. Recent knowledge regarding the genetics of OI permits an accurate diagnosis of the specific type of OI and its own molecular mechanism, a genetic counseling for family planning and prenatal diagnosis, and in addition more targeted therapeutic options. A specific support with re-education for patients with OI is necessary and efficient. To optimize patient care, a multidisciplinary consultation is proposed at the CHUV, moreover a web site is available for patients, families and therapists: www.infomaladiesrares.ch

Background: Evaluation of health-related quality of life (HRQL) is important in improving the quality of patient care. Methods: The HeartQoL Project, with cross-sectional and longitudinal phases, was designed to develop a core ischemic heart disease (IHD) specific HRQL questionnaire, to be called the HeartQoL, for patients with angina, myocardial infarction (MI), or ischemic heart failure. Patients completed a battery of questionnaires and Mokken scaling analysis was used to identify items in the HeartQoL questionnaire. Results: We enrolled 6384 patients (angina, n = 2111, 33.1%; MI, n = 2351, 36.8%; heart failure, n = 1922, 30.1%) across 22 countries and 15 languages. The HeartQoL questionnaire comprises 14-items with 10-item physical and 4-item emotional subscales which are scored from 0 (poor HRQL) to 3 (better HRQL) with a global score if needed. The mean baseline HeartQoL global score was 2.2 (±0.5) in the total group and was different (p < 0.001) by diagnosis (MI, 2.4 ± 0.5; angina, 2.2 ± 0.6; and heart failure, 2.1 ± 0.6). Conclusion: The HeartQoL questionnaire, with global and subscale scores, has the potential to allow clinicians and researchers to (a) assess baseline HRQL, (b) make between-diagnosis comparisons of HRQL, and (c) evaluate change in HRQL in patients with angina, MI, or heart failure with a single IHD-specific HRQL instrument.
