We measure directed flow (v(1)) for charged particles in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV, as a function of pseudorapidity (eta), transverse momentum (p(t)), and collision centrality, based on data from the STAR experiment. We find that the directed flow depends on the incident energy but, contrary to all available model implementations, not on the size of the colliding system at a given centrality. We extend the validity of the limiting fragmentation concept to v(1) in different collision systems, and investigate possible explanations for the observed sign change in v(1)(p(t)).

We introduce the Coupled Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CATT-BRAMS). CATT-BRAMS is an on-line transport model fully consistent with the simulated atmospheric dynamics. Emission sources from biomass burning and urban-industrial-vehicular activities for trace gases and from biomass burning aerosol particles are obtained from several published datasets and remote sensing information. The tracer and aerosol mass concentration prognostics include the effects of sub-grid scale turbulence in the planetary boundary layer, convective transport by shallow and deep moist convection, wet and dry deposition, and plume rise associated with vegetation fires in addition to the grid scale transport. The radiation parameterization takes into account the interaction between the simulated biomass burning aerosol particles and short and long wave radiation. The atmospheric model BRAMS is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), with several improvements associated with cumulus convection representation, soil moisture initialization and surface scheme tuned for the tropics, among others. In this paper the CATT-BRAMS model is used to simulate carbon monoxide and particulate material (PM(2.5)) surface fluxes and atmospheric transport during the 2002 LBA field campaigns, conducted during the transition from the dry to wet season in the southwest Amazon Basin. Model evaluation is addressed with comparisons between model results and near surface, radiosondes and airborne measurements performed during the field campaign, as well as remote sensing derived products. We show the matching of emissions strengths to observed carbon monoxide in the LBA campaign. A relatively good comparison to the MOPITT data, in spite of the fact that MOPITT a priori assumptions imply several difficulties, is also obtained.

We consider finite-size particles colliding elastically, advected by a chaotic flow. The collisionless dynamics has a quasiperiodic attractor and particles are advected towards this attractor. We show in this work that the collisions have dramatic effects in the system's dynamics, giving rise to collective phenomena not found in the one-particle dynamics. In particular, the collisions induce a kind of instability, in which particles abruptly spread out from the vicinity of the attractor, reaching the neighborhood of a coexisting chaotic saddle, in an autoexcitable regime. This saddle, not present in the dynamics of a single particle, emerges due to the collective particle interaction. We argue that this phenomenon is general for advected, interacting particles in chaotic flows.

We present precise tests of CP and CPT symmetry based on the full data set of K -> pi pi decays collected by the KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during 1996, 1997, and 1999. This data set contains 16 x 10(6) K -> pi(0)pi(0) and 69 x 10(6) K -> pi(+)pi(-) decays. We measure the direct CP violation parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (19.2 +/- 2.1) x 10(-4). We find the K(L) -> K(S) mass difference Delta m = (5270 +/- 12) x 10(6) (h) over tilde s(-1) and the K(S) lifetime tau(S) = (89.62 +/- 0.05) x 10(-12) s. We also measure several parameters that test CPT invariance. We find the difference between the phase of the indirect CP violation parameter epsilon and the superweak phase: phi(epsilon) - phi(SW) =(0.40 +/- 0.56)degrees. We measure the difference of the relative phases between the CP violating and CP conserving decay amplitudes for K -> pi(+)pi(-) (phi(+-)) and for K -> pi(0)pi(0) (phi(00)): Delta phi = (0.30 +/- 0.35)degrees. From these phase measurements, we place a limit on the mass difference between K(0) and (K) over bar (0): Delta M < 4.8 x 10(-19) GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. These results are consistent with those of other experiments, our own earlier measurements, and CPT symmetry.

We report accurate magnetization measurements on the spin-gap compound NiCl(2)-4SC (NH(2))(2) around the low portion of the magnetic induced phase ordering. The critical density of the magnetization at the phase boundary is analyzed in terms of a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bosonic particles, and the boson interaction strength is obtained as upsilon(0)=0.61 meV. The detailed analysis of the magnetization data across the transition leads to the conclusion for the preservation of the U(1) symmetry, as required for BEC. (c) 2009 American Institute of Physics. This study reports on the preparation, characterization and in vitro toxicity test of a new nano-drug delivery system (NDDS) based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanospheres which incorporates surface-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and/or the silicon(IV) phthalocyanine (NzPc). The new NDDS was engineered for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with hyperthermia (HPT) to address cancer treatment. The BSA-based nanospheres, hosting NzPc, MNP or both (NzPc and MNP), present spherical shape with hydrodynamic average diameter values ranging from 170 to 450 nm and zeta potential of around -23 mV. No difference on the fluorescence spectrum of the encapsulated NzPc was found regardless of the presence of MNP. Time-dependent fluorescence measurements of the encapsulated NzPc revealed a bi-exponential decay for samples incorporating only NzPc and NzPc plus MNP, in the time window ranging from 1.70 to 5.20 ns. The in vitro assay, using human fibroblasts, revealed no cytotoxic effect in all samples investigated, demonstrating the potential of the tested system as a synergistic NDDS. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. To evaluate an antigen delivery system in which exogenous antigen can target the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I pathway, a single human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 E7 cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitope and a single HIV gp160 CTL epitope were separately fused to the C-terminus or bovine papillomavirus 1 (BPV1) L1 sequence to form hybrid BPV1L1 VLPs. Mice immunized with these hybrid VLPs mounted strong CTL responses against the relevant target cells in the absence of any adjuvants. In addition, the CTL responses induced by immunization with BPV1L1/HPV16E7CTL VLPs protected mice against challenge with E7-transformed tumor cells. Furthermore, a high titer-specific antibody response against BPV1L1 VLPs was also induced, and this antiserum could inhibit papillomavirus-induced agglutination of mouse erythrocytes, suggesting that the antibody may recognize conformational determinates relevant to virus neutralization. These data demonstrate that hybrid BPV1L1 VLPs can be used as carriers to target antigenic epitopes to both the MHC class I and class II pathways, providing a promising strategy for the design of vaccines to prevent virus infection, with the potential to elicit therapeutic virus-specific CTL responses. Virus-like particles (VLPs) are being currently investigated in vaccines against viral infections in humans. There are different recombinant-protein-expression systems available for obtaining the necessary VLP preparation for vaccination. However, the differences in post-translational modifications of the recombinant proteins obtained and their differences in efficacy in eliciting an anti-viral response in vaccines are not well established. In this study we have compared the posttranslational modifications of human papillomavirus type-6b major capsid protein L1 (HPV 6bL1) expressed using recombinant baculovirus (rBV) in Sf9 (Spodoptera frugiperda) insect cells, with the protein expressed using recombinant vaccinia virus (rVV) in CV-1 kidney epithelial cells, Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of biosynthetically labelled rBV-expressed HPV 6bL1 showed several post-translationally modified variants of the protein, whereas rVV-expressed HPV 6bL1 showed only a few variants. Phosphorylations were detected at threonine and serine residues for the L1 expressed from rBV compared with phosphorylation at serine residues only for the L1 expressed from rVV. HPV 6bL1 expressed using rBV incorporated [H-3]mannose and [H-3]galactose, whereas HPV 6bL1 expressed using rVV incorporated only [H-3]galactose. We conclude that post-translational modification of recombinant HPV 6bL1 can differ according to the system used for its expression. Since recombinant L1 protein is a potential human-vaccine candidate, the implication of the observed differences in post-translational modifications on immunogenicity of L1 VLPs warrants investigation.

This study reports on the development and characterization of bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanospheres containing Silicon(IV) phthalocyanine (NzPc) and/or maghemite nanoparticles (MNP), the latter introduced via ionic magnetic fluid (MF). The nanosized BSA-loaded samples were designed for synergic application while combining Photodynamic Therapy and Hyperthermia. Incorporation of MNP in the albumin-based template, allowing full control of the magnetic content, was accomplished by adding a highly-stable ionic magnetic fluid sample to the albumin suspension, following heat denaturing. The material`s evaluation was performed using Zeta potential measurements and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were characterized by steady-state techniques and time-resolved fluorescence. The in vitro assay, using human fibroblasts, revealed no cytotoxic effect in all samples investigated, demonstrating the potential of the tested system as a synergistic drug delivery system.

The mechanisms of the systemic response associated with talc-induced pleurodesis are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to assess the acute inflammatory response and migration of talc of small. size particles injected in the pleural space. Rabbits were injected intrapleurally with talc solution containing small. or mixed particles and blood and pleural fluid samples were collected after 6, 24 or 48 h and assayed for leukocytes, neutrophils, lactate dehydrogenase, IL-8, VEGF, and TGF-beta. The lungs, spleen, liver and kidneys were assessed to study deposit of talc particles. Both types of talc produced an acute serum inflammatory response, more pronounced in the small particles group. Pleural fluid IL-8 and VEGF levels were higher in the small particle talc group. Correlation between pleural VEFG and TGF-beta levels was observed for both groups. Although talc particles were demonstrated in the organs of both groups, they were more pronounced in the small talc group. In conclusion, intrapleural injection of talc of small size particles produced a more pronounced acute systemic response and a greater deposition in organs than talc of mixed particles. Rationale- Chronic exposure to air pollution has been associated with adverse effects on children`s lung growth. Objectives: We analyzed the effects of chronic exposure to urban levels of particulate matter (PM) on selected phases of mouse lung development. Methods: The exposure occurred in two open-top chambers (filtered and nonfiltered) placed 20 m from a street with heavy traffic in Sao Paulo, 24 hours/day for 8 months. There was a significant reduction of the levels of PM(2.5) inside the filtered chamber (filtered = 2.9 +/- 3.0 mu g/m(3), nonfiltered = 16.8 +/- 8.3 mu g/m(3); P = 0.001). At this exposure site, vehicular sources are the major components of PM(2.5) (PM <= 2.5 mu m). Exposure of the parental generation in the two chambers occurred from the 10th to the 120th days of life. After mating and birth of offspring, a crossover of mothers and pups occurred within the chambers, resulting in four groups of pups: nonexposed, prenatal, postnatal, and pre+postnatal. Offspring were killed at the age of 15 (n = 42) and 90 (n = 35) days; lungs were analyzed by morphometry for surface to volume ratio (as an estimator of alveolization). Pressure-volume curves were performed in the older groups, using a 20-ml plethysmograph. Measurements and Main Results: Mice exposed to PM(2.5) pre+postnatally presented a smaller surface to volume ratio when compared with nonexposed animals (P = 0.036). The pre+postnatal group presented reduced inspiratory and expiratory volumes at higher levels of transpulmonary pressure (P = 0.001). There were no differences among prenatal and postnatal exposure and nonexposed animals. Conclusions: Our data provide anatomical and functional support to the concept that chronic exposure to urban PM affects lung growth.

Ambient particles have been consistently associated with adverse health effects, yielding mainly high cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. Diesel engines represent a major source of particles in the urban scenario. We aimed to modify the composition of diesel particles, by means of different extraction procedures, to relate changes in chemical profile to corresponding indicators of respiratory toxicity. Male BALB/c mice were nasally instilled with saline, or with diesel particles, treated or not, and assigned to five groups: saline ( SHAM), intact diesel particles (DEP), and diesel particles previously treated with methanol ( METH), hexane ( HEX), or nitric acid (NA). Elemental composition and organic compounds were analyzed. Twenty-four hours after nasal instillation, respiratory parameters were measured and lung tissue was collected for histological analysis. Static elastance was significantly increased in groups DEP and MET in relation to the other groups. HEX and NA were different from DEP but not significantly different from SHAM and METH groups. The difference between dynamic and static elastance was increased in DEP, METH, and NA treatments; HEX was not statistically different from SHAM. DEP and METH groups presented significantly increased upper airways resistance, while DEP, METH, and NA showed higher peripheral airways resistance values. All groups had a higher total resistance than SHAM. DEP, METH, and NA showed significant increased infiltration of polymorphonuclear cells. In conclusion, diesel particles treated with hexane ( HEX) resulted in a respiratory-system profile very similar to that in SHAM group, indicating that hexane treatment attenuates pulmonary inflammation elicited by diesel particles.

We cloned the complete complementary DNA of an isolate of the hepatitis C virus, HCV-S1, into a tetra cycline-inducible expression vector and stably transfected it into two human hepatoma cell lines, Huh7 and HepG2. Twenty-six Huh7 and two HepG2-positive clones were obtained after preliminary screening. Two Huh7 (SH-7 and -9) and one HepG2 (G-19) clones were chosen for further characterisation. Expression of HCV proteins in these cells accumulated from 6 In to 4 days posttreatment. Full-length viral plus-strand RNA was detected by Northern analyses. Using RT-PCR and ribonuclease protection assay, we also detected the synthesis of minus-strand HCV RNA. Plus- and minus-strand viral RNA was still detected after treatment with actinomycin D. Indirect immunofluorescence staining with anti-E2, NS4B, and NS5A revealed that these proteins were mostly localised to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Culture media from tet-induced SH-9 cells was separated on sucrose density gradients and analysed for the presence of HCV RNA. Viral RNA levels peaked at two separate ranges, one with a buoyant density of 1.08 g/ml and another from 1.17 to 1.39 g/ml. Electron microscopy demonstrated the presence of subviral-like particles (approximately 20-25 nm in diameter) in the cytoplasm of SH-9 and G-19 cells, which were positively labelled by anti-HCV core antibodies. Anti-E2 antibodies strongly labelled cytoplasmic vesicular structures and some viral-like particles. Complete viral particles of about 50 nm which reacted with anti-E2 antibodies were observed in the culture media of tet-induced SH-9 cells following negative staining. Supernatant from tet-treated SH-9 cells was found to infect naive Huh7 and stable Huh7-human CD81 cells. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

Farmers are occupationally exposed to many respiratory hazards at work and display higher rates of asthma and respiratory symptoms than other workers. Dust is one of the components present in poultry production that increases risk of adverse respiratory disease occurrence. Dust originates from poultry residues, molds, and feathers and is biologically active as it contains microorganisms. Exposure to dust is known to produce a variety of clinical responses, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic airways obstructive disease (COPD), allergic alveolitis, and organic dust toxic syndrome (ODTS). A study was developed to determine particle contamination in seven poultry farms and correlate this with prevalence rate of respiratory defects and record by means of a questionnaire the presence of clinical symptoms associated with asthma and other allergy diseases by European Community Respiratory Health Survey. Poultry farm dust contamination was found to contain higher concentrations of particulate matter (PM) PM5 and PM10. Prevalence rate of obstructive pulmonary disorders was higher in individuals with longer exposure regardless of smoking status. In addition, a high prevalence for asthmatic (42.5%) and nasal (51.1%) symptoms was noted in poultry workers. Data thus show that poultry farm workers are more prone to suffer from respiratory ailments and this may be attributed to higher concentrations of PM found in the dust. Intervention programs aimed at reducing exposure to dust will ameliorate occupational working conditions and enhance the health of workers.
