Some novel binary and ternary complexes of rare earth ions (Gd, Eu, Tb) with N-phenyl-2-aminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline were synthesized by homogenous precipitation and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, UV/Vis spectra, and thermal analysis. The phosphorescence spectra and lifetimes of gadolinium complexes were measured, and the triplet state energies of N-phenyl-2-aminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline as well as the energy transfer efficiencies between N-phenyl-2-aminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline were determined. The photophysical properties such as luminescence and intramolecular energy transfer between the rare earth center ions and the ligands and between ligands are discussed.

Results of photophysical properties of the complexes of Gd3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+ with conjugated carboxylic acids (3,4-funandicarboxylic acid and nicotinic acid) and 1,10-phenanthroline are reported. Whether between central ions and ligands or between the two ligands, it is found that the intramolecular energy efficiency is a sensitive function of the relative positions of the resonance energy levels of the central ions and the lowest triplet states of the ligands. Couplings of rare earth ions to the ligands are discussed in detail. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

This thesis focuses on the synthesis and analysis of novel chloride based platinum complexes derived from iminophosphine and phosphinoamide ligands, along with studies on their reactivity towards substitution and oxidation reactions. Also explored here are the potential applications of these complexes for biological and luminescent purposes. Chapter one provides an extensive overview of platinum coordination chemistry with examples of various mixed donor ligands along with the history of platinum anticancer therapy. It also looks at metals in medicine, both for biological functions as well as for therapeutic purposes and gives a background to some other applications for platinum complexes. Chapter two outlines the design and synthetic strategies employed for the development of novel platinum (II) chloride complexes from iminophosphine and phosphinoamide ligands. Also reported is the cyclometallation of these complexes to form stable tridentate mixed donor platinum (II) compounds. In Chapter three the development of a direct method for displacing a chloride from a platinum metal centre with a desired phosphine is reported. Numerous methods for successful oxidation of the platinum (II) complexes will also be explored, leading to novel platinum (IV) complexes being reported here also. The importance of stabilisation of the displaced anion, chloride, by the solvent system will also be discussed in this chapter. Chapter four investigates the reactivity of the platinum (II) complexes towards two different biomolecules to form novel platinum bio-adducts. The potential application of the platinum (II) cyclometallates as chemotherapeutics will also be explored here using in-vitro cancer cell testing. Finally, luminescence studies are also reported here for the ligands and platinum complexes reported in chapter two and three to investigate potential applications in this field also. Chapter five provides a final conclusion and an overall summary of the entire project as well as identifying key areas for future work.

The effects of isoelectronic replacement of a neutral nitrogen donor atom by an anionic carbon atom in terpyridine ruthenium(II) complexes on the electronic and photophysical properties of the resulting N,C,N'- and C,N,N'-cyclometalated aryl ruthenium(II) complexes were investigated. To this end, a series of complexes was prepared either with ligands containing exclusively nitrogen donor atoms, that is, [Ru(R-1-tpy)(R-2-tpy)](2+) (R-1, R-2 = H, CO2Et), or bearing either one N,C,N'- or C,N,N'-cyclometalated ligand and one tpy ligand, that is, [Ru(R-1-(NCN)-C-Lambda-N-Lambda)(R-2-tpy)](+) and [Ru(R-1-(CNN)-N-Lambda-N-Lambda)(R-2-tpy)](+), respectively. Single-crystal X-ray structure determinations showed that cyclometalation does not significantly alter the overall geometry of the complexes but does change the bond lengths around the ruthenium(II) center, especially the nitrogen-to-ruthenium bond length trans to the carbanion. Substitution of either of the ligands with electron-withdrawing ester functionalities fine-tuned the electronic properties and resulted in the presence of an IR probe. Using trends obtained from redox potentials, emission energies, IR spectroelectrochemical responses, and the character of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals from DFT studies, it is shown that the first reduction process and luminescence are associated with the ester-substituted C,N,N'-cyclometalated ligand in [Ru(EtO2C-(CNN)-N-Lambda-N-Lambda)(tpy)](+). Cyclometalation in an N,C,N'-bonding motif changed the energetic order of the ruthenium d(zx), d(yz), and d(xy) orbitals. The red-shifted absorption in the N,C,N'-cyclometalated complexes is assigned to MLCT transitions to the tpy ligand. The red shift observed upon introduction of the ester moiety is associated with an increase in intensity of low-energy transitions, rather than a red shift of the main transition. Cyclometalation in the C,N,N'-binding motif also red-shifts the absorption, but the corresponding transition is associated with both ligand types. Luminescence of the cyclometalated complexes is relatively independent of the mode of cyclometalation, obeying the energy gap law within each individual series.

In this work Ba0.99Eu0.01MoO4 (BEMO) powders were prepared by the first time by the Complex Polymerization Method. The structural and optical properties of the BEMO powders were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectra, High-Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy (HR-SEM) and Photoluminescent Measurements. XRD show a crystalline scheelite-type phase after the heat treatment at temperatures greater than 400 degrees C. The ionic radius of Eu3+ (0.109 nm) is lower than the Ba2+ (0.149 nm) one. This difference is responsible for the decrease in the lattice parameters of the BEMO compared to the pure BaMoO4 matrix. This little difference in the lattice parameters show that Eu3+ is expected to occupy the Ba2+ site at different temperatures, stayed the tetragonal (S-4) symmetry characteristic of scheelite-type crystalline structures of BaMoO4. The emission spectra of the samples, when excited at 394 nm, presented the D-5(1)-> F-7(0, 1 and 2) and D-5(0)-> F-7(0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) Eu3+ transitions at 523, 533, 554, 578, 589, 614, 652 and 699 nm, respectively. The emission spectra of the powders heat-treated at 800 and 900 degrees C showed a marked increase in its intensities compared to the materials heat-treated from 400 to 700 C. The decay times for the sample were evaluated and all of them presented the average value of 0.61 ms. Eu3+ luminescence decay time follows one exponential curve indicating the presence of only one type of Eu3+ symmetry site.

Lanthanide compounds of general formula [Ln2(2,5-tdc) 3(dmf)2(H2O)2] ·2dmf·H2O (Ln = Eu(III) (1), Tb(III) (2), Gd(III) (3) and Dy(III) (4), dmf = N,N′-dimethylformamide and 2,5-tdc2- = 2,5-thiophedicarboxylate anion) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Phosphorescence data of Gd(III) complex showed that the triplet states (T1) of 2,5-tdc2- ligand have higher energy than the main emitting states of Eu(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III), indicating that 2,5-tdc2- ligand can act as intramolecular energy donor for these metal ions. An energy level diagram was used to establish the most relevant channels involved in the ligand-to-metal energy transfer. The high value of experimental intensity parameter Ω2 for the Eu(III) complex indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. The emission quantum efficiency (η) of the 5D0 emitting level of Eu(III) was also determined. The complexes act as possible light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs). © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The present work employs a set of complementary techniques to investigate the influence of outlying Ru(II) groups on the ground- and excited-state photophysical properties of free-base tetrapyridyl porphyrin (H(2)TPyP). Single pulse and, pulse train Z-scan techniques used M association with laser flash photolysis, absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence decay measurements, allowed us to conclude that the presence of outlying Ru(II) groups causes significant changes on both electronic structure and vibrational properties of porphyrin. Such modifications take place mainly due to the activation of. nonradiative decay channels responsible for the emission, quenching, as well as by favoring some vibrational modes in the light absorption process, It is also observed that, differently from what happens when the Ru(II) is placed at the center of the macrocycle, the peripheral groups cause an increase of the intersystem crossing processes, probably due to the structural distortion of the ring that implies a worse spin orbit coupling, responsible for the intersystem crossing mechanism.

The synthesis and structural characterization of a europium complexed fluorene-bipyridine copolymer are described. A level of ion insertion of 80% in molar basis was achieved, and theoretical calculations showed that it required a twist of 179 degrees (49 kJ) between the pyridine units. Spectroscopy data showed that no electronic coupling between the main backbone and the complexation sites had occurred, but these hindered the interchain aggregation observed in the non complexed polymer. Preliminary electroluminescence studies showed that the EL and PL spectra are consistent, and that the ion had a trapping effect in the charge transport. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The monodentate cis-[Ru(phen)(2)(hist)(2)](2+) 1R and the bidentate cis-[Ru(phen)(2)(hist)](2+) 2A complexes were prepared and characterized using spectroscopic (H-1, (H-1-H-1) COSY and (H-1-C-13) HSQC NMR, UV-vis, luminescence) techniques. The complexes presented absorption and emission in the visible region, as well as a tri-exponential emission decay. The complexes are soluble in aqueous and non-aqueous solution with solubility in a buffer solution of pH 7.4 of 1.14 x 10(-3) mol L-1 for (1R + 2A) and 6.43 x 10(-4) mol L-1 for 2A and lipophilicity measured in an aqueous-octanol solution of -1.14 and -0.96, respectively. Photolysis in the visible region in CH3CN converted the starting complexes into cis-[Ru(phen)(2)(CH3CN)(2)](2+). Histamine photorelease was also observed in pure water and in the presence of BSA (1.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1). The bidentate coordination of the histamine to the ruthenium center in relation to the monodentate coordination increased the photosubstitution quantum yield by a factor of 3. Pharmacological studies showed that the complexes present a moderate inhibition of AChE with an IC50 of 21 mu mol L-1 (referred to risvagtini, IC50 181 mu mol L-1 and galantamine IC50 0.006 mu mol L-1) with no appreciable cytotoxicity toward to the HeLa cells (50% cell viability at 925 mu mol L-1). Cell uptake of the complexes into HeLa cells was detected by fluorescence confocal microscopy. Overall, the observation of a luminescent complex that penetrates the cell wall and has low cytotoxicity, but is reactive photochemically, releasing histamine when irradiated with visible light, are interesting features for application of these complexes as phototherapeutic agents.

Photosensitizers (PS) photodynamic activities are regulated by their location in the biological target, which modulates their photophysical and photochemical features. In this work the PS partition for the Xanthene Dyes Fluorescein (FSC), Eosin Y(EOS), Erythrosin B (ERY) and Rose Bengal B (RBB) in biomimetic models (SDS, CTAB and Pluronic P-123 micelles) and the effects on their photophysical characteristics are evaluated. The hydrophobic and electrostatic forces that govern the PS-micelle interaction are analyzed. At physiological pH (7.25), the ability of the dianionic protolytic form of the dyes to be positioned into the micelle palisade and its micelle interaction depends not only on the hydrophobicity of the dye but also on the micellar surface charge. The Binding Constants obey exactly the same order of the Partition Coefficients for the dyes in P-123 and CTAB micelles. The Stern-Volmer treatment pointed out that dyes are located inside the micelle, especially ERY and RBB. The magnitude of the dye-micelle interaction increased from SDS, P-123 and finally CTAB micelles due to the charges between dye and micelle, and among the xanthenes, their hydrophobic characteristics. Within the micelle pseudo phase, ERY and RBB are still very efficient photosensitizers exhibiting high quantum yield of singlet oxygen, which turns them very attractive especially with P-123 polymeric system as drug delivery systems in photodynamic therapy. The aim of this thesis was the synthesis and photophysical characterization of some new polysulfurated aromatic compounds: this class of molecules can offer intriguing properties, potentially useful for the construction of new materials for optoelectronic devices. Two main families of compounds have been synthesized: the first is represented by a series of small molecular asterisks, with peripheral aromatic units, showing luminescence in solid phase or in highly rigid conditions. All compounds with peripheral substituents display an AIE behavior (Aggregation Induced Emission) with radiative deactivation of the triplet states. Taking inspiration from these smaller asterisks, a larger molecule with the same geometry has been designed, decorated with terpyridyl moieties as the outermost units: this compound shows great affinity for the coordination of several transition metal ions, changing luminescence properties after the interaction with zinc ions. With the same intentions, a tetrasulfurated pyrene-core molecule with terpyridyl external units has been synthesized and isolated: this ligand exhibits good coordination capabilities towards transition metal ions, giving rise to luminescent nanoaggregates upon addition of zinc(II), characterized by DLS and AFM microscopy. In addition a NIR emission is recorded after coordination of neodymium(III), showing evidence of an intramolecular energy transfer process.

This thesis was focused on the investigation of the linear optical properties of novel two photon absorbers for biomedical applications. Substituted imidazole and imidazopyridine derivatives, and organic dendrimers were studied as potential fluorophores for two photon bioimaging. The results obtained showed superior luminescence properties for sulphonamido imidazole derivatives compared to other substituted imidazoles. Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines exhibited an important dependence on the substitution pattern of their luminescence properties. Substitution at imidazole ring led to a higher fluorescence yield than the substitution at the pyridine one. Bis-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines of Donor-Acceptor-Donor type were examined. Bis-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines dimerized at C3 position had better luminescence properties than those dimerized at C5, displaying high emission yields and important 2PA cross sections. Phosphazene-based dendrimers with fluorene branches and cationic charges on the periphery were also examined. Due to aggregation phenomena in polar solvents, the dendrimers registered a significant loss of luminescence with respect to fluorene chromophore model. An improved design of more rigid chromophores yields enhanced luminescence properties which, connected to large 2PA cross-sections, make this compounds valuable as fluorophores in bioimaging. The photophysical study of several ketocoumarine initiators, designed for the fabrication of small dimension prostheses by two photon polymerization (2PP) was carried out. The compounds showed low emission yields, indicative of a high population of the triplet excited state, which is the active state in producing the reactive species. Their efficiency in 2PP was proved by fabrication of microstructures and their biocompatibility was tested in the collaborator’s laboratory. In the frame of the 2PA photorelease of drugs, three fluorene-based dyads have been investigated. They were designed to release the gamma-aminobutyric acid via two photon induced electron transfer. The experimental data in polar solvents showed a fast electron transfer followed by an almost equally fast back electron transfer process, which indicate a poor optimization of the system.
