A mercury film electrode was used to determine direct and simultaneously Pb(II) (at -410 mV) and Cu(II) (at -100 mV) in biodiesel by anodic stripping voltammetry. A linear response was obtained for Pb(II) and Cu(II) in the 2.00 × 10-8-1.00 × 10-7 mol L-1 concentration range and detection limits were 2.91 × 10-9 mol L-1 and 4.69 × 10-9 mol L-1 for Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively, with recovery around of 100.0%. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. This study assesses the adsorption of Pb(II) on natural kaolin waste (KRnatural) and on that treated with 3 mol L-1 H2SO4 and HCl. Equilibrium and thermodynamic parameters were determined. The results indicate that the values of CEC, specific area and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (4.6-6.0 cmol kg-1, 14.0-16.0 m² g-1 and 1.16-1.30, respectively) vary only slightly for the adsorbents; the concentration of Pb2+ is much higher than that of other species (PbOH+ and Pb(OH) 2). The values of RL, ΔGº, ΔHº and ΔSº are typical of feasible, spontaneous, exothermic and ordered adsorption. The chemisorption on KR natural is more feasible and ordered.

Estuarine systems play an important role in the retention of toxic trace elements owing to the affinity of these elements with particles dissolved in water. This work presents the use of a voltammetric sensor to monitor heavy metal (Zn (II), Cd(II) and Pb (II)) concentrations in the Cananeia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon region (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). Lower concentrations were found in the Southern estuarine system (Cananeia City) and increased concentrations observed in the Northern sector (Iguape City) were promoted by anthropogenic activities, with particular influence from the historical introduction of mining wastes and inputs from agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents. The proposed method is reliable, inexpensive and fast, can simultaneously provide information on the concentration of these metallic ions and can be easily used for field measurements aboard oceanographic ships.

Several types of alumina were synthesized from sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) by precipitation with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and subsequently calcination at 500 degrees C to obtain gamma-Al2O3. The precursor aluminate was derived from aluminum scrap. The various gamma-Al2O3 synthesized were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), adsorption-desorption of N-2 (S-BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD revealed that distinct phases of Al2O3 were formed during thermal treatment. Moreover, it was observed that conditions of synthesis (pH, aging time and temperature) strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the alumina. A high-surface-area alumina (371 m(2) g(-1)) was synthesized under mild conditions, from inexpensive raw materials. These aluminas were tested for the adsorption of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution at toxic metal concentrations, and isotherms were determined. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Pb(II) binding by SiO2 nanoparticles in an aqueous dispersion was investigated under conditions where the concentrations of Pb2+ ions and nanoparticles are of similar magnitude. Conditional stability constants (log K) obtained at different values of pH and ionic strength varied from 4.4 at pH 5.5 and I = 0.1 M to 6.4 at pH 6.5 and I = 0.0015 M. In the range of metal to nanoparticle ratios from 1.6 to 0.3, log K strongly increases, which is shown to be due to heterogeneity in Pb(II) binding. For an ionic strength of 0.1 M the Pb2+/SiO2 nanoparticle system is labile, whereas for lower ionic strengths there is loss of lability with increasing pH and decreasing ionic strength. Theoretical calculations on the basis of Eigen-type complex formation kinetics seem to support the loss of lability. This is related to the nanoparticulate nature of the system, where complexation rate constants become increasingly diffusion controlled. The ion binding heterogeneity and chemodynamics of oxidic nanoparticles clearly need further detailed research.

The destructive impact of improper disposal of heavy metals in the environment increases as a direct result of population explosion, urbanization and industrial expansion and technological developments. Argil are potential materials for adsorption of inorganic and the pelletization of it is required for use in adsorptive columns of fixed bed. The low cost and the possibility of regeneration makes these materials attractive for use in the purification process, capable of removing inorganic compounds in contaminated aquatic environments. In this work was made pellets of a mixture of dolomite and montmorillonite by wet agglomeration, in different percentages. The removal of Pb (II) was investigated through experimental studies, and was modeled by kinetic models and isotherms of adsorption. The materials were characterized using the techniques of XRD, TG / DTA, FT-IR, and surface area by BET method. The results showed the adsorption efficiency of the contaminant by the composite material studied in synthetic solution. The study found that the adsorption follows the Langmuir model, and the kinetics of adsorption follows the model of pseudosecond order
