Structural, optical and nanomechanical properties of nanocrystalline Zinc Telluride (ZnTe) films of thickness upto 10 microns deposited at room temperature on borosilicate glass substrates are reported. X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that the films were preferentially oriented along the (1 1 1) direction. The maximum refractive index of the films was 2.74 at a wavelength of 2000 nm. The optical band gap showed strong thickness dependence. The average film hardness and Young's modulus obtained from load-displacement curves and analyzed by Oliver-Pharr method were 4 and 70 GPa respectively. Hardness of (1 1 1) oriented ZnTe thin films exhibited almost 5 times higher value than bulk. The studies show clearly that the hardness increases with decreasing indentation size, for indents between 30 and 300 nm in depth indicating the existence of indentation size effect. The coefficient of friction for these films as obtained from the nanoscratch test was ~0.4.

Conjugated polymers are intensively pursued as candidate materials for emission and detection devices with the optical range of interest determined by the chemical structure. On the other hand the optical range for emission and detection can also be tuned by size selection in semiconductor nanoclusters. The mechanisms for charge generation and separation upon optical excitation, and light emission are different for these systems. Hybrid systems based on these different class of materials reveal interesting electronic and optical properties and add further insight into the individual characteristics of the different components. Multilayer structures and blends of these materials on different substrates were prepared for absorption, photocurrent (Iph), photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminscence (EL) studies. Polymers chosen were derivatives of polythiophene (PT) and polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) along with nanoclusters of cadmium sulphide of average size 4.4 nm (CdS-44). The photocurrent spectral response in these systems followed the absorption response around the band edges for each of the components and revealed additional features, which depended on bias voltage, thickness of the layers and interfacial effects. The current-voltage curves showed multi-component features with emission varying for different regimes of voltage. The emission spectral response revealed additive features and is discussed in terms of excitonic mechanisms.

TiO2 thin films were prepared by sol gel method. The structural investigations performed by means of X- ray diffraction (XRD) technique, Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) showed the shape structure at T=600°C. The optical constants of the deposited film were obtained from the analysis of the experimental recorded transmittance spectral data over the wavelengths range 200-3000 nm. The values of some important parameters (refractive index n, dielectric constant ε ∞ and thickness d), and the third order optical nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) of TiO2 film are determined from these spectra. It has been found that the dispersion data obey the single oscillator relation of the Wemple-DiDomenico model, from which the dispersion parameters and high – frequency dielectric constant were determined. The estimation of the corresponding band gap Eg , χ (3) and ε ∞ are 2.57 eV, 0.021 × 10-10 esu and 5.20,respectively.

We briefly review the growth and structural properties of View the MathML source bulk single crystals and View the MathML source epitaxial films grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. Temperature-dependent transport measurements on these samples are then correlated with the information obtained from structural (XRD, TEM, SEM) and optical (FTIR absorption) investigations. The temperature dependence of mobility and the Hall coefficient are theoretically modelled by exactly solving the linearized Boltzmann transport equation by inversion of the collision matrix and the relative role of various scattering mechanisms in limiting the low temperature and View the MathML source mobility is estimated. Finally, the first observation of Shubnikov oscillations in InAsSb is discussed.

Copper dodecanoate films prepared by emulsion method exhibit superhydrophobic property with water contact angle of 155 degrees and sliding angle of <2 degrees. The films have been characterised by using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Surface microstructure of copper dodecanoate consists of numerous microscale papillas of about 6-12 mu m in length with a diameter in the range of 360-700 nm. The superhydrophobicity of the films is due to their dual micronano surface morphology. The wetting behaviour of the film surface was studied by a simple water immersion test. The results show that copper dodecanoate film retained superhydrophobic property even after immersing in water for about 140 h. The optical absorption spectrum exhibits two broadbands centred at 388 and 630 nm that have been assigned to B-2(1g) -> E-2(g) and B-2(1g) -> B-2(2g) transitions of Cu2+ ions, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits two resonance signals with effective g values at g(parallel to)approximate to 2.308 and g(perpendicular to) approximate to 2.071, which suggests that the unpaired electron occupies d(x2-y2) orbital in the ground state. Tin (Sn) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were synthesized by sol-gel spin coating method using zinc acetate di-hydrate and tin chloride di-hydrate as the precursor materials. The films were deposited on glass and silicon substrates and annealed at different temperatures in air ambient. The agglomeration of grains was observed by the addition of Sn in ZnO film with an average grain size of 60 nm. The optical properties of the films were studied using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. The optical band gap energies were estimated at different concentrations of Sn. The MOS capacitors were fabricated using Sn doped ZnO films. The capacitance-voltage (C-V), dissipation vs. voltage (D-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were studied and the electrical resistivity and dielectric constant were estimated. The porosity and surface area of the films were increased with the doping of Sn which makes these films suitable for opto-electronic applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The impact of chemical treatment on the surface morphology and other physical properties of tin monosulphide (SnS) thin films have been investigated. The SnS films treated with selected organic solvents exhibited strong improvement in their crystalline-quality and considerable decrease in electrical resistivity. Particularly, the films treated with chloroform showed very low electrical resistivity of similar to 5 Omega cm and a low optical band gap of 1.81 eV as compared to untreated and treated SnS films with other chemicals. From these studies we realized that the chemical treatment of SnS films has strong impact on their surface morphology and also on other physical properties. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The structural, magnetic and luminescence properties were studied. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern of alpha-Fe2O3 exhibits pure rhombohedral structure. SEM micrographs reveal the dumbbell shaped particles. The EPR spectrum shows an intense resonance signal at g approximate to 5.61 corresponding to isolated Fe3+ ions situated in axially distorted sites, whereas the g approximate to 2.30 is due to Fe3+ ions coupled by exchange interaction. Raman studies show A(1g) (225 cm(-1)) and E-g (293 and 409 cm(-1)) phonon modes. The absorption at 300 nm results from the ligand to metal charge transfer transitions whereas the 540 nm peak is mainly due to the (6)A(1) + (6)A(1) —> T-4(1)(4G) + T-4(1)(4G) excitation of an Fe3+-Fe3+ pair. A prominent TL glow peak was observed at 140 C at heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics (b) were evaluated and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thin films of CexZn1-xO thin films were deposited on glass substrates at 400 degrees C by nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique. Ce doping concentration (x) was varied from 0 to 10%, in steps of 2.5%. X-ray diffraction reveals that all the films have polycrystalline nature with hexagonal crystal structure and high preferential orientation along (002) plane. Optical parameters such as; transmittance, band gap energy, refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), complex dielectric constants (epsilon(r), epsilon(i)) and optical conductivity (sigma(r), sigma(i)) have been determined and discussed with respect to Ce concentration. All the films exhibit transmittance above 80% in the wavelength range from 330 to 2500 nm. Optical transmission measurements indicate the decrease of direct band gap energy from 3.26 to 3.12 eV with the increase of Ce concentration. Photoluminescence spectra show strong near band edge emission centered similar to 398 nm and green emission centered similar to 528 nm with excitation wavelength similar to 350 nm. High resolution scanning electron micrographs indicate the formation of vertical nano-rod like structures on the film surface with average diameter similar to 41 nm. Electrical properties of the Ce doped ZnO film have been studied using ac impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 100 Hz-1 MHz at different temperatures. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. We report the self catalytic growth of Sn-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowires (NWs) over a large area glass and silicon substrates by electron beam evaporation method at low substrate temperatures of 250-400 degrees C. The ITO NWs growth was carried out without using an additional reactive oxygen gas and a metal catalyst particle. Ultrafine diameter (similar to 10-15 nm) and micron long ITO NWs growth was observed in a temperature window of 300-400 degrees C. Transmission electron microscope studies confirmed single crystalline nature of the NWs and energy dispersive spectroscopy studies on the NWs confirmed that the NWs growth proceeds via self catalytic vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism. ITO nanowire films grown on glass substrates at a substrate temperature of 300-400 degrees C have shown similar to 2-6% reflection and similar to 70-85% transmission in the visible region. Effect of deposition parameters was systematically investigated. The large area growth of ITO nanowire films would find potential applications in the optoelectronic devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Samarium doped barium zirconate titanate ceramics with general formula Ba1-x Sm-2x/3](Zr0.05Ti0.95)O-3 x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03] were prepared by high energy ball milling method. X-ray diffraction patterns and micro-Raman spectroscopy confirmed that these ceramics have a single phase with a tetragonal structure. Rietveld refinement data were employed to model BaO12], SmO12], ZrO6], and TiO6] clusters in the lattice. Scanning electron microscopy shows a reduction in average grain size with the increase of Sm3+ ions into lattice. Temperature-dependent dielectric studies indicate a ferroelectric phase transition and the transition temperature decreases with an increase in Sm3+ ion content. The nature of the transition was investigated by the Curie-Weiss law and it is observed that the diffusivity increases with Sm3+ ion content. The ferroelectric hysteresis loop illustrates that the remnant polarization and coercive field increase with an increase in Sm3+ ions content. Optical properties of the ceramics were studied using ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

We have studied the influence of Al doping on the microstructural, optical, and electrical properties of spray-deposited WO3 thin films. XRD analyses confirm that all the films are of polycrystalline WO3 in nature, possessing monoclinic structure. EDX profiles of the Al-doped films show aluminum peaks implying incorporation of Al ions into WO3 lattice. On Al doping, the average crystallite size decreases due to increase in the density of nucleation centers at the time of film growth. The observed variation in the lattice parameter values on Al doping is attributed to the incorporation of Al ions into WO3 lattice. Enhancement in the direct optical band gap compared to the undoped film has been observed on Al doping due to decrease in the width of allowed energy states near the conduction band edge. The refractive indices of the films follow the Cauchy relation of normal dispersion. Electrical resistivity compared to the undoped film has been found to increase on Al doping.

TiO2 thin films with 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.6 wt%, and 0.8 wt% Fe were prepared on glass and silicon substrates using sol-gel spin coating technique. The optical cut-off points are increasingly red-shifted and the absorption edge is shifted over the higher wavelength region with Fe content increasing. As Fe content increases, the optical band gap decreases from 3.03 to 2.48 eV whereas the tail width increases from 0.26 to 1.43 eV. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for doped films at 0.2 wt% and 0.8 wt% Fe reveal no characteristic peaks, indicating that the film is amorphous whereas undoped TiO2 exhibits (101) orientation with anatase phase. Thin films of higher Fe content exhibit a homogeneous, uniform, and nano-structured highly porous shell morphology.
