The aim of this work is to make a qualitatively and ecologically evaluation of a compact cogeneration system that operates with synthesis gas obtained from a gasifier. Using the Eucalyptus Biomass as fuel, that passes through a wood gasifier (Drowndraft type) and supply the internal combustion engine. The compact cogeneration system is composed of two heat exchangers, an energy generator connected to an internal combustion engine and an absorption refrigeration system. The complete system is installed in the laboratory from the Energy Department at the University of Guaratinguetá. By the analysis related to the First and Second Thermodynamic Laws applied in this system, was possible to identify the mass flows in each point, energetic efficiency, irreversibility and exergetic efficiency. The components that have the biggest irreversibilities are the gasifier, followed by the internal combustion engine, which should be focused in future improvements. The system efficiency in energetic basis is 51,84% and in exergetic basis is 22,78%. Using the ecologic efficiency methodology was possible to identify the emissions rates, the pollution indicator associated to the combustion of the synthesis gas in the internal combustion engine. The ecologic efficiency considering the energectic analysis is 91,73%, while considering the exergetic analysis, 83,65%. It is concluded that the use of the synthesis gas in a compact cogeneration system is viable from the technical and ecological point of view, making possible to generate energy for isolated communities and promoting the decentralized electricity generation

The volume of liquid effluent generated in cattle slaughterhouses is quite high and cannot be released untreated in water bodies due to its high pollution load of predominantly organic origin. To minimize the environmental impacts of its industrial wastewater and meet the local environmental legislation, abattoirs shall make the treatment of these effluents. The present work aims to develop the study of a reactor by sequential batch pilot scale, in order to optimize their performance in treating wastewater from a cattle slaughterhouse. The treatment system used was developed and installed in the Laboratory of Wastewater Treatment, in Faculty of Science and Technology UNESP, Presidente Prudente campus. The procedure used followed the operation of sequential batch reactors, in which all processes and treatment operations occurring sequentially in a single unit, by establishing specific operating cycles, which comprise the following separated phases: aerobic reaction, anoxic reaction, sedimentation and emptying. Aiming to improve the quality of treatment was planned the addition of coagulant Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) in the reactor, by determining their optimal dosage by Jar-test trials. Were prepared four steps with specific operating cycles: step one or acclimatization (10 hour of aeration, one hour and 30 minutes of sedimentation and 30 minutes for exchanging the effluent); step 2 (6 hours of aeration or aerobic phase, 4 hours and 45 minutes of stirring or anoxic phase and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange effluent); step 3 (2 hours and 30 minutes of aeration, 8 hours and 15 minutes of stirring and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange) and step 4 (2 hours of aeration, 8 hours and 45 minutes of stirring and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange)... We used electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy to study the intercalation of hydrogen into a Cu(111) model electrode under reactive (in operando) conditions. Hydrogen evolution causes hydrogen intermediates to migrate into the copper lattice as function of the applied potential and the resulting current density. This H-inclusion is demonstrated to be reversible. The presence of subsurface hydrogen leads to a significant surface relaxation/reconstruction affecting both the geometric and electronic structure of the electrode surface.

A major concern of electrocatalysis research is to assess the structural and chemical changes that a catalyst may itself undergo in the course of the catalyzed process. These changes can influence not only the activity of the studied catalyst but also its selectivity toward the formation of a certain product. An illustrative example is the electroreduction of carbon dioxide on tin oxide nanoparticles, where under the operating conditions of the electrolysis (that is, at cathodic potentials), the catalyst undergoes structural changes which, in an extreme case, involve its reduction to metallic tin. This results in a decreased Faradaic efficiency (FE) for the production of formate (HCOO–) that is otherwise the main product of CO2 reduction on SnOx surfaces. In this study, we utilized potential- and time-dependent in operando Raman spectroscopy in order to monitor the oxidation state changes of SnO2 that accompany CO2 reduction. Investigations were carried out at different alkaline pH levels, and a strong correlation between the oxidation state of the surface and the FE of HCOO– formation was found. At moderately cathodic potentials, SnO2 exhibits a high FE for the production of formate, while at very negative potentials the oxide is reduced to metallic Sn, and the efficiency of formate production is significantly decreased. Interestingly, the highest FE of formate production is measured at potentials where SnO2 is thermodynamically unstable; however, its reduction is kinetically hindered.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to determine the distribution of size and number of nanometric particles that come from diesel engines by means of on-board equipment in extra-urban traffic. In order to do this, cutting-edge measuring equipment was used under average driving conditions in extra-urban traffic for more than 800 km along the Madrid-Badajoz-Madrid route using a typical vehicle from Spain's automotive population and innovative, groundbreaking registering methods for this type of emissions were used. All this paves the way for lines of research and development which should help understand, measure and characterize the behavior of such particles, as well as their impact in the quality of life of the general population. The study makes two important contributions to the field. First, it makes it possible to register emissions under transient conditions, which are characteristic to real traffic. Secondly, it provides a means to keep the measuring conditions under control and prevents the random formation of particles of volatile origin through the built-in adjustment system of the exhaust gas sample. As a result, an abundant and reliable sample was gathered, which enabled the building of mathematical models to estimate the emission of nanometric, ultrafine, fine and total particles on volumetric, spatial and temporal bases as a function of the orographic outline of the road within a ±5.0% range. These emission estimating models lower both the experimentation costs and the required equipment's complexity, and they provided the basis for the development of a first software application version that estimates the particles emitted from diesel engines under extra-urban traffic conditions (Partículas Emitidas por Motores Diésel, PEMDI).
