Después de haber dedicado una serie de números de ILUSTRACIÓN DE MADRID al comentario de distintos planos de los siglos XIX y XX, regresamos al siglo XVIII con este magní- fico ejemplar del grabador y cartógrafo alemán Juan Bautista Homann. No es nada desconocido, pues ya hace tiempo que figura en los repertorios al uso de la cartografía dedicada a la Villa y Corte, apreciado no tanto por su precisión como por su belleza. Homann no pisó jamás tierras españolas, por lo que hemos de deducir que el conocimiento que tuvo de Madrid fue indirecto. Si este cartógrafo hubiera tenido la fortuna y el tiempo de visitar los muchos lugares que representó en su dilatada obra, tendríamos ante nosotros un verdadero Livingstone de las centurias del XVII y del XVIII. Éste no es el caso. Homann, como Nicolás de Fer y tantos otros, no pasaron de ser cartógrafos de gabinete.
