This article aims to discuss the space, revealing its powerful in the comprehension of modem world, from the thesis which the geographic space consists itself as condition, medium and product of society reproduction in its totality, evolving several temporal-spatial scales and several levels of reality, that should prolong Marx's work, having in view the construction of a ""social theory of space"" in the sense of a radical critical geography. This argumentation allows to understand, in the limits of geography, the passage of the notion ""production of space"" as condition of the accumulation of capital to the notion ""production of space"" as condition of present reproduction in front of the accumulation crisis. As a starting point, a discussion about some David Harvey's works, who supports the thesis that accumulation crisis of capital would be solved, in the modem world, through the spatial fix.

Background: Claudin-4 (CLDN4) is one of several proteins that act as molecular mediators of embryo implantation. Recently, we examined immunolabeling of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) in the endometrial tissue of 52 IVF patients, and found that LIF staining intensity was strongly correlated with successful pregnancy initiation. In the same set of patients, we have now examined endometrial CLDN4 expression, to see how expression intensity may vary with LIF. We examined CLDN4 in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, immediately preceding IVF treatment. Our aim was to compare expression of LIF and CLDN4 in the luteal phase, and document these patterns as putative biomarkers for pregnancy. Methods: Endometrial tissue was collected from women undergoing IVF. Endometrial biopsies were obtained during the luteal phase preceding IVF, and were then used for tissue microarray (TMA) immunolabeling of CLDN4. Previously published LIF expression data were then combined with CLDN4 expression data, to determine CLDN4/LIF expression patterns. Associations between successful pregnancy after IVF and combined CLDN4/LIF expression patterns were evaluated. Results: Four patterns of immunolabeling were observed in the endometrial samples: 16% showed weak CLDN4 and strong LIF (CLDN4(-)/LIF(+)); 20% showed strong CLDN4 and strong LIF (LIF(+)/CLDN4(+)); 28% showed strong CLDN4 and weak LIF (CLDN4(+)/LIF(-)); and 36% showed weak CLDN4 and weak LIF (CLDN4(-)/LIF(-)). Successful implantation after IVF was associated with CLDN4(-)/LIF(+)(p = 0.003). Patients showing this endometrial CLDN4(-)/LIF(+) immunolabeling were also 6 times more likely to achieve pregnancy than patients with endometrial CLDN4(+)/LIF(-) immunolabeling (p = 0.007). Conclusion: The combined immunolabeling expression of CLDN4(-)/LIF(+) in endometrial tissue is a potential biomarker for predicting successful pregnancy in IVF candidates.

In this paper, the microbial characteristics of the granular sludge in the presence of oxygen (3.0 +/- 0.7 mg O-2 1(-1)) were analyzed using molecular biology techniques. The granules were provided by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) operated over 469 days and fed with synthetic substrate. Ethanol and sulfate were added to obtain different COD/SO42- ratios (3.0, 2.0, and 1.6). The results of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses showed that archaeal cells, detected by the ARC915 probe, accounted for 77%, 84%, and 75% in the COD/SO42- ratios (3.0, 2.0, and 1.6, respectively). Methanosaeta sp. was the predominant acetoclastic archaea observed by optical microscopy and FISH analyses, and confirmed by sequencing of the excised bands of the DGGE gel with a similarity of 96%. The sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio vulgaris subsp. vulgaris (similarity of 99%) was verified by sequencing of the DGGE band. Others identified microorganism were similar to Shewanella sp. and Desulfitobacterium hafniense, with similarities of 95% and 99%, respectively. These results confirmed that the presence of oxygen did not severely affect the metabolism of microorganisms that are commonly considered strictly anaerobic. We obtained mean efficiencies of organic matter conversion and sulfate reducing higher than 74%. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study the spreading of contagious diseases in a population of constant size using susceptible-infective-recovered (SIR) models described in terms of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and probabilistic cellular automata (PCA). In the PCA model, each individual (represented by a cell in the lattice) is mainly locally connected to others. We investigate how the topological properties of the random network representing contacts among individuals influence the transient behavior and the permanent regime of the epidemiological system described by ODE and PCA. Our main conclusions are: (1) the basic reproduction number (commonly called R(0)) related to a disease propagation in a population cannot be uniquely determined from some features of transient behavior of the infective group; (2) R(0) cannot be associated to a unique combination of clustering coefficient and average shortest path length characterizing the contact network. We discuss how these results can embarrass the specification of control strategies for combating disease propagations. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objective of this research was to examine how various factors in Icelandic cod fishing can influence the quality of the raw material, using traceability systems to link these factors, and how transfer that knowledge and techniques to the Brazilian seafood industry. Data were collected in 2007 and analysed, to find a functional relationship between various quality factors. The analysis, showed, that there is a correlation between the number of parasites in the fillets and location of the fishing ground. It also showed that fishing ground and volume in haul can influence gaping, and that fillet yield differs between fishing grounds. These conclusions could only be drawn because of the ability to trace the fish from catch and all the way through processing. Recommendations drawn from this research to the Brazilian Competent Authority are to revise the countries fisheries legislation in order to enable the implementation of a traceability system that could be used as a tool to improve the quality of the raw material. Wolbachia is an intracellular bacterium that is almost exclusively maternally transmitted, and its reproductive effects favor transmission of the intracellular bacterial agent at the expense of the arthropod population that is not infected. Wolbachia can cause cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis and feminization in many arthropods.

We quantified differences in the abundance and diversity of bird species at inherent (naturally occurring) and induced (human-created) edges in the Murray Mallee, South Australia, to explore the effects of anthropogenic landscape modification. Bird species were classified into edge response categories based on numerical differences in abundance between the edge and interior of habitat patches. 'Open-country' species (e.g. Australian Magpie and Little Raven) increased in abundance near induced edges, but were rarely recorded > 200 m into patch interiors or at inherent edges. The Australian Ringneck, Red Wattlebird, Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater, Singing Honeyeater and White-eared Honeyeater increased in abundance near each inherent edge and were classified as 'edge-users'. However, their responses at induced edges varied between sites. The Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, Spotted Pardalote, White-browed Babbler, Chestnut Quail-thrush and Southern Scrub-robin decreased in abundance near one or more induced edges and were classified as 'edge-avoiders' at these sites. The Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, Spotted Pardalote, Chestnut Quail-thrush and Southern Scrub-robin are considered mallee habitat specialists in eastern Australia. These species may be particularly affected by anthropogenic modification of mallee vegetation.

We assayed nest predation as an edge effect, using artificial ground nests, at inherent (naturally occurring) and induced (human-created) edges, in the Murray Mallee, South Australia. Nests were constructed at distances between 0-120 m away from habitat edges. The relative predation rate on nests generally increased close to induced edges with a significant difference (P < 0.05) recorded for two out of five experiments. Predation rate at inherent edges was similar from the edge to the interior, and was lower than that recorded at induced edges. Our results suggest that increased predator numbers, activity or efficiency at locating nests occurred close to the induced edges at our study sites.

We re-mapped the soils of the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) in 1995-1998 with a minimum of new fieldwork, making the most out of existing data. We collated existing digital soil maps and used inductive spatial modelling to predict soil types from those maps combined with environmental predictor variables. Lithology, Landsat Multi Spectral Scanner (Landsat MSS), the 9-s digital elevation model (DEM) of Australia and derived terrain attributes, all gridded to 250-m pixels, were the predictor variables. Because the basin-wide datasets were very large data mining software was used for modelling. Rule induction by data mining was also used to define the spatial domain of extrapolation for the extension of soil-landscape models from existing soil maps. Procedures to estimate the uncertainty associated with the predictions and quality of information for the new soil-landforms map of the MDB are described. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The population structure, reproductive period, and juvenile recruitment of Panopeus americanus were studied in order to enhance knowledge of its life cycle and reproductive strategy and promote the maintenance of its natural stocks in an impacted region. Specimens were collected in the remnant human-impacted mangrove at Araca, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at two-month intervals from January to November 2005, at low tide, with a capture effort by three people. The crabs were measured (carapace width, CW) and sexed. The total catch was 275 animals, including 132 males (48.0%); 127 females (46.2%), of which 39 were ovigerous (14.2% of total catch); and 16 individuals whose sex could not be identified (5.8%). No correlation was observed between water temperature and the number of collected individuals; however, there was a significant, positive correlation with salinity. Males were significantly larger than females. The size-frequency distribution was bimodal, reflecting the occurrende of more than one recruitment pulse and the differential abundance of adults during the period of study. The overall sex ratio was 1:0.97 favoring males, and was not significantly different from the expected value, i.e., this population fits the anomalous pattern of sex occurrence in size classes. Ovigerous females were captured in all sampled months, which explain the continuous recruitment observed. Expected low levels of individuals of different size classes in the population were not confirmed. All population aspects found here allowed us to infer that this population of P. americanus is well established in the impacted mangrove by virtue of its reproductive strategy.

Objective: To assess the impact of the mean oocyte diameter (MOD) on occurrence of fertilization and embryo quality in assisted reproduction cycles. Design: Prospective observational study. Setting: Sector of Human Reproduction of the University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo (HCFMRP-USP). Patient(s): Thirty-five women undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) at the University Hospital of Ribeirao Preto from May to October 2007. Intervention(s): MOD assessment. Main Outcome Measure(s): Occurrence of fertilization and qualitative embryo classification on 2nd and 3rd day after ICSI. Result(s): We divided 160 metaphase II oocytes according to MOD into groups A (MOD below the 25th percentile), B (MOD between 25th and 75th percentile), and C (MOD above the 75th percentile). There was no statistically significant association between MOD and the occurrence of fertilization or the qualitative embryo classification on days 2 and 3. There was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding number of cells or the qualitative embryo classification on days 2 and 3. Conclusion(s): The MOD of mature oocytes does not seem to be related to the occurrence of fertilization or to the developmental quality of human embryos on days 2 and 3 after ICSI. Despite the probable inhibitory effects of GnRH analogues on ovarian steroidogenesis in vitro, their association with assisted reproduction protocols shows favorable results. This suggests that there are important differences in the behaviors of these drugs when administered in vivo versus in vitro. To clarify these differences, this study was designed to analyze the effect of leuprolide acetate (LA) on ovarian steroidogenesis in women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). A prospective, randomized open label study was conducted on 14 women (26-35 years): seven receiving only gonadotrophins (Group 1) and seven receiving gonadotrophin plus LA at 1mg/day (Group 2). The LA in vivo effect was determined with serum and follicular fluid (FF) samples and via luteinized granulosa cell cultivation (GCC), where cells were obtained during oocyte retrieval after ovarian hyperstimulation. In vitro analysis was performed via addition of LA to GCC only for Group 1 (without LA) at progressively higher concentrations (0, 10(-12), 10(-9) and 10(-6) M). In vivo, the main observation was a reduction in androgen production in Group 2, represented by lower androstenedione production in FF (G1 = 6479 +/- 3458; G2 = 3021 +/- 1119 ng/ml; p = 0.04) and a lower testosterone peak in GC at 96 h (G1 = 0.64 +/- 0.12 ng/ml; G2 = 0.50 +/- 0.19ng/ml; P = 0.02), but a higher fertilization rate (G1 = 67%; G2 = 83%; p = 0.009). in vitro, testosterone, estradiol and progesterone were also reduced by LA, even though this reduction occurred for progesterone only at the highest LA dosage (10(-6) M; 606.0 +/- 114.3 ng/ml versus 1524.0 +/- 246.5 ng/ml; p=0.02). Results show that LA reduces ovarian steroidogenesis in vivo by essentially inhibiting androgen synthesis; whereas, in vitro, ovarian steroidogenesis is reduced overall. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc.
