XD: Experience Design Magazine (Issue One)

XD: Experience Design Magazine is an interdisciplinary publication that focuses on the concept and practice of ‘experience design’, as a holistic concept separate from the well known concept of ‘user experience’. The magazine aims to present a mixture of interrelated perspectives from industry and academic researchers with practicing designers and managers. The informal, journalistic style of the publication aims to simultaneously provide a platform for researchers and other writers to promote their work in an applied way for global impact, and for industry designers to present practical perspectives to inspire a global research audience. Each issue will feature a series of projects, interviews, visuals, reviews and creative inspiration – all of which help everyone understand why experience design is important, who does it and where, how experience design is done in practice and how experience design research can enhance practice. The role of the website in a magazine business: Revisiting old truths

This paper explores consumer behavioural patterns on a magazine website. By using a unique dataset of real-life click stream data from 295 magazine website visitors, interesting behavioural patterns are noted: most importantly, 86 % of all sessions only visit the blogs hosted by the magazine. This means that the visitors short-circuit the start page and are not exposed to any editorial content at all, and consequently not to any commercial content on those pages. Sessions visiting editorial content, commercial content or social media links actually represent only one (1) per cent or less of all sessions recorded. Consequently, the online platform gives very limited support for the business model. Our data questions the general assumption that online platforms are key components of a contemporary magazine’s business model.

Interesting behavioural patterns are noted: most importantly, 86 % of all sessions only visit the blogs. This means that the visitors are not exposed to any editorial content at all, and choose to avoid also commercial contents. Sessions visiting editorial content, commercial content or social media links are very few in numbers (each 1 per cent or less of the sessions), thus giving only very limited support to the magazine business model. We noted that consumer behaviour on the magazine website seems to be very goal-oriented and instrumental, rather than exploratory and ritualized. This paper contributes to the current knowledge of media management by shedding light on consumer behaviour on media websites, and opening up the challenges with current media business models. From a more practical perspective, our data questions the general assumption of online platforms as supporter of the print business.

Fast forward to the end: Stories of the cassette magazine

Although they made up a significant share of the retail music market from the 60s to the 90s, and were often used as promotional and marketing tools, cassettes became re-configured in the 80s as an integral component of cassette magazines. Binding sound, music, talk, text, visual art and design, they were a truly innovative interdisciplinary form. This paper explores the history of these artefacts with particular emphasis on the Brisbane underground music scene of the late 70s and 80s, and discusses their significance in as a bridge between the music scene and art scenes of this period.

Gender and female entrepreneurship in a pro-entrepreneurship magazine

In this working paper I discuss gendered entrepreneurship by exploring how the media writes about female entrepreneurship. The starting point is that the media when talking and writing about female entrepreneurs and female entrepreneurship, mould meanings of gender in entrepreneurship. I view entrepreneurship and gender as socially constructed, discursive phenomena. To uncover the processes of constructing gender in female entrepreneurship this paper applies a discursive framework, which treats language as a representational system producing and circulating meaning. The focus on language use as action implies that practises of writing and talking about female entrepreneurship ‘make’ gender as much as the women entrepreneurs) themselves: both involve working on culturally shared meanings to make reality intelligible. The data consists of articles published in Yrittäjä, a pro-SME magazine, in 1990-1997. In the analysis I show how gender is constructed in media talk. as a women’s issue Women entrepreneurs are constantly compared with men and with an implicitly masculine ideal of entrepreneurship and with strengths and weaknesses of women are displayed pointing out that the meaning making of gender taking place in the data refers to equality discourse. Finally I discuss possible consequences of the hegemonic equality discourse and suggest lines of further research.

Hacia un estado mundial de derecho global?

Como aclaración previa quiero señalar que cuando hablemos de Estado de Derecho en esta disertación nos limitaremos al Estado de Derecho liberal moderno, no porque sea el único modelo de Estado de Derecho, ni el mejor, sino porque es el que se ha impuesto a partir de la modernidad. Por supuesto que existieron otras realidades políticas que se dieron a lo largo de la historia, como ser la ciudad antigua o polis, los reinos y los imperios que, por otra parte, constituyen elementos indispensables en la formación de la cultura occidental. Sin duda van a surgir ineludibles comparaciones, pero por una cuestión metodológica nos limitaremos a la realidad política y jurídica moderna. Estado de Derecho que se origina en los procesos revolucionarios de los siglos XVII y XVIII que se dan en los Estados Nacionales surgidos en la modernidad, proceso más moderado en su versión inglesa y luego americana, mientras que más radical en la versión francesa. Actualmente, el fenómeno de la globalización o mundialización en el que estamos inmersos sirve de contexto para plantearnos la aporía sobre el futuro del Estado de Derecho: ¿vamos hacia un Estado Mundial por encima o en sustitución de los Estados Nacionales?, ¿vamos hacia un Derecho Global por encima o en sustitución de los Derechos Nacionales? Intentando dar una respuesta a estos interrogantes (no sé si lo lograré) voy a dividir la exposición en dos partes claramente diferenciadas: 1) un análisis fáctico puramente descriptivo del cuadro de situación actual y de sus antecedentes, sin entrar en valoraciones; 2) un análisis teórico de las distintas interpretaciones y justificaciones de esa realidad fáctica, dentro de las cuales analizaremos especialmente la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia. Finalmente, terminaré con algunas reflexiones personales sobre el tema en cuestión...

Plumas letradas en la Revista Latinidad (1939-1947) : el aporte de intelectuales locales en una publicación de la colectividad franco-argentina

Resumen: En el presente trabajo se analiza el aporte que un grupo de poetas, políticos e intelectuales argentinos en la revista Latinidad –creada por el impresor francés Mauricio Bouxin en 1920 y reeditada entre 1939 y 1947–, para dar cuenta de una posible apertura en la recepción de colaboraciones. Esto, en una variedad de sentidos: en cuanto a la nacionalidad y pertenencia de quienes escribían, su espectro ideológico y militancia, el posicionamiento en cuanto a la Segunda Guerra Mundial –tópico principal de la publicación– y, en cuanto a opiniones sobre política interna argentina. Plantearemos cómo la latinidad fue propuesta como un factor cohesionante, no sólo dentro de la propia comunidad francesa, sino en el contexto latinoamericano con el que pretendían estrechar lazos de identidad compartida, en el marco del conflicto bélico mundial.

La ciencia económica después de la crisis mundial

I am delighted to be here this evening. This is my first visit to Argentina and I am honored to be invited by the Catholic University of Argentina. I will talk about the world crisis from a Keynesian point of view, and my lecture will be divided into three parts: why did it start?; what should we be doing about it?; and what steps can we take to prevent something like this from happening again. So I will deal with “origin”, “recovery” and “reform”. Because of the speed of the recovery in this part of the world my diagnosis and prescriptions might at first glance seem less relevant to Argentina and Latin America than to Europe and the United States. But Latin America’s recovery is mainly based on rising commodity prices and commodity prices are, partly determined by what happens to the rest of the world. In a globalized world each country fate is bound up with the fate of its neighbors. Bringing about a global recovery, therefore, is in the interest of all, whether in South America or Southern Europe.

El artículo “Una presencia que conoce” presenta una parte del trabajo que el autor realizó sobre los mensajes del papa Juan Pablo II para la Jornada Mundial del Enfermo y que próximamente se podrá conocer con el título “El amor de los que sufren” publicado por Ed. San Benito con prólogo de la Dra. Beatriz Balián de Tagtachian. El profundo estudio de los trece Mensajes del Santo Padre para la Jornada Mundial del Enfermo analiza qué concepto de enfermo tiene el papa Juan Pablo II, cuáles son sus presupuestos antropológicos y qué sentido tiene la enfermedad en el plan de Dios sobre cada uno de los hombres; cuál es la misión de la Iglesia, y qué tipo de acompañamiento necesitan los enfermos para que podamos imitar la solicitud de la Virgen María. En estas páginas se aborda el significado y la finalidad de la Jornada Mundial del Enfermo, la importancia que el Papa atribuye a ésta para la misión de la Iglesia en el mundo, los objetivos que él ha determinado para esta jornada y el modo de celebrarla que ha sugerido.
