A code-label recognition time of less than 500ps is demonstrated using low-cost FIRfilters. The electronically-processed label provides a control signal from an auto-correlated label. Despite the abundant availability,of protocols and application for peer-to-peer file sharing, several drawbacks are still present in the field. Among most notable drawbacks is the lack of a simple and interoperable way to share information among independent peer-to-peer networks. Another drawback is the requirement that the shared content can be accessed only by a limited number of compatible applications, making impossible their access to others applications and system. In this work we present a new approach for peer-to-peer data indexing, focused on organization and retrieval of metadata which describes the shared content. This approach results in a common and interoperable infrastructure, which provides a transparent access to data shared on multiple data sharing networks via a simple API. The proposed approach is evaluated using a case study, implemented as a cross-platform extension to Mozilla Fir fox browser; and demonstrates the advantages of such interoperability over conventional distributed data access strategies.

Crosstalk caused by switching events in fast tunable lasers in an optical label switching (OLS) system is investigated for the first time. A wavelength-division-multiplexed OLS system based on subcarrier multiplexed labels is presented which employs a 40-Gb/s duobinary payload and a 155-Mb/s label on a 40-GHz subcarrier. Degradation in system performance as the transmitters switch between different channels is then characterized in terms of the frequency drift of the tunable laser.

A Internet é responsável pelo surgimento de um novo paradigma de televisão – IPTV (Televisão sobre IP). Este serviço distingue-se de outros modelos de televisão, pois permite aos utilizadores um elevado grau de interactividade, com um controlo personalizado sobre os conteúdos a que pretende assistir. Possibilita ainda a oferta de um número ilimitado de canais, bem como o acesso a conteúdos de Vídeo on Demand (VoD). O IPTV apresenta diversas funcionalidades suportadas por uma arquitectura complexa e uma rede convergente que serve de integração a serviços de voz, dados e vídeo. A tecnologia IPTV explora ao máximo as características da Internet, com a utilização de mecanismos de Qualidade de Serviço. Surge ainda como uma revolução dentro do panorama televisivo, abrindo portas a novos investimentos por parte das empresas de telecomunicações. A Internet também permite fazer chamadas telefónicas sobre a rede IP. Este serviço é denominado VoIP (Voz sobre IP) e encontra-se em funcionamento já há algum tempo. Desta forma surge a oportunidade de poder oferecer ao consumidor final, um serviço que inclua os serviços de Internet, de VoIP e de IPTV denominado serviço Triple Play. O serviço Triple Play veio obrigar a revisão de toda a rede de transporte de forma a preparar a mesma para suportar este serviço de uma forma eficiente (QoS), resiliente (recuperação de falhas) e optimizado (Engenharia de tráfego). Em redes de telecomunicações, tanto a quebra de uma ligação como a congestão nas redes pode interferir nos serviços oferecidos aos consumidores finais. Mecanismos de sobrevivência são aplicados de forma a garantir a continuidade do serviço mesmo na ocorrência de uma falha. O objectivo desta dissertação é propor uma solução de uma arquitectura de rede capaz de suportar o serviço Triple Play de uma forma eficiente, resiliente e optimizada através de um encaminhamento óptimo ou quase óptimo. No âmbito deste trabalho, é realizada a análise do impacto das estratégias de encaminhamento que garantem a eficiência, sobrevivência e optimização das redes IP existentes, bem como é determinado o número limite de clientes permitido numa situação de pico de uma dada rede. Neste trabalho foram abordados os conceitos de Serviços Triple Play, Redes de Acesso, Redes Núcleo, Qualidade de Serviço, MPLS (Multi-Protocolo Label Switching), Engenharia de Tráfego e Recuperação de falhas. As conclusões obtidas das simulações efectuadas através do simulador de rede NS-2.33 (Network Simulator versão 2.33) serviram para propor a solução da arquitectura de uma rede capaz de suportar o serviço Triple Play de uma forma eficiente, resiliente e optimizada.

All-Optical Label Swapping (AOLS) es una tecnología clave para la implementación de nodos de conmutación completamente óptica de paquetes. Sin embargo, el costo de su desarrollo es proporcional al tamaño del espacio de etiquetas (label space). Debido a que los principios de funcionamiento de AOLS son casos particulares de los del MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS), esta tesis estudia métodos generales, aplicables a ambos, con el propósito de reducir el espacio de etiquetas tanto como sea posible. Modelos de programación lineal entera y heurísticas son propuestos para el caso en el que se permite apilar una etiqueta extra. Encontramos que cerca del 50% del espacio de etiquetas puede ser reducido, si se permite colocar una etiqueta extra en la pila. Además, particularmente para AOLS, encontramos que se puede reducir el espacio de etiquetas cerca al 25% si se duplica la capacidad de los enlaces y se permite re-encaminar el tráfico.

Muchas de las nuevas aplicaciones emergentes de Internet tales como TV sobre Internet, Radio sobre Internet,Video Streamming multi-punto, entre otras, necesitan los siguientes requerimientos de recursos: ancho de banda consumido, retardo extremo-a-extremo, tasa de paquetes perdidos, etc. Por lo anterior, es necesario formular una propuesta que especifique y provea para este tipo de aplicaciones los recursos necesarios para su buen funcionamiento. En esta tesis, proponemos un esquema de ingeniería de tráfico multi-objetivo a través del uso de diferentes árboles de distribución para muchos flujos multicast. En este caso, estamos usando la aproximación de múltiples caminos para cada nodo egreso y de esta forma obtener la aproximación de múltiples árboles y a través de esta forma crear diferentes árboles multicast. Sin embargo, nuestra propuesta resuelve la fracción de la división del tráfico a través de múltiples árboles. La propuesta puede ser aplicada en redes MPLS estableciendo rutas explícitas en eventos multicast. En primera instancia, el objetivo es combinar los siguientes objetivos ponderados dentro de una métrica agregada: máxima utilización de los enlaces, cantidad de saltos, el ancho de banda total consumido y el retardo total extremo-a-extremo. Nosotros hemos formulado esta función multi-objetivo (modelo MHDB-S) y los resultados obtenidos muestran que varios objetivos ponderados son reducidos y la máxima utilización de los enlaces es minimizada. El problema es NP-duro, por lo tanto, un algoritmo es propuesto para optimizar los diferentes objetivos. El comportamiento que obtuvimos usando este algoritmo es similar al que obtuvimos con el modelo. Normalmente, durante la transmisión multicast los nodos egresos pueden salir o entrar del árbol y por esta razón en esta tesis proponemos un esquema de ingeniería de tráfico multi-objetivo usando diferentes árboles para grupos multicast dinámicos. (en el cual los nodos egresos pueden cambiar durante el tiempo de vida de la conexión). Si un árbol multicast es recomputado desde el principio, esto podría consumir un tiempo considerable de CPU y además todas las comuicaciones que están usando el árbol multicast serán temporalmente interrumpida. Para aliviar estos inconvenientes, proponemos un modelo de optimización (modelo dinámico MHDB-D) que utilice los árboles multicast previamente computados (modelo estático MHDB-S) adicionando nuevos nodos egreso. Usando el método de la suma ponderada para resolver el modelo analítico, no necesariamente es correcto, porque es posible tener un espacio de solución no convexo y por esta razón algunas soluciones pueden no ser encontradas. Adicionalmente, otros tipos de objetivos fueron encontrados en diferentes trabajos de investigación. Por las razones mencionadas anteriormente, un nuevo modelo llamado GMM es propuesto y para dar solución a este problema un nuevo algoritmo usando Algoritmos Evolutivos Multi-Objetivos es propuesto. Este algoritmo esta inspirado por el algoritmo Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA). Para dar una solución al caso dinámico con este modelo generalizado, nosotros hemos propuesto un nuevo modelo dinámico y una solución computacional usando Breadth First Search (BFS) probabilístico. Finalmente, para evaluar nuestro esquema de optimización propuesto, ejecutamos diferentes pruebas y simulaciones. Las principales contribuciones de esta tesis son la taxonomía, los modelos de optimización multi-objetivo para los casos estático y dinámico en transmisiones multicast (MHDB-S y MHDB-D), los algoritmos para dar solución computacional a los modelos. Finalmente, los modelos generalizados también para los casos estático y dinámico (GMM y GMM Dinámico) y las propuestas computacionales para dar slución usando MOEA y BFS probabilístico.

Low-cost optical switches based on SLMs have conventionally been considered unsuitable for packet switching due to slow reconfiguration time. In this paper, we demonstrate that the constraint of SLM reconfiguration time in a hybrid three-stage electronic/optical switching node architecture can be compensated through the utilization of MPLS label switching mechanism to achieve the best performance for SAN applications. © 2012 SEE.

Ethernet is becoming the dominant aggregation technology for carrier transport networks; however, as it is a LAN technology, native bridged ethernet does not fulfill all the carrier requirements. One of the schemes proposed by the research community to make ethernet fulfill carrier requirements is ethernet VLAN-label switching (ELS). ELS allows the creation of label switched data paths using a 12-bit label encoded in the VLAN TAG control information field. Previous label switching technologies such as MPLS use more bits for encoding the label. Hence, they do not suffer from label sparsity issues as ELS might. This paper studies the sparsity issues resulting from the reduced ELS VLAN-label space and proposes the use of the label merging technique to improve label space usage. New multimedia applications that use the Internet as a communication media are pressing for the development of new technologies, such as: MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and DiffServ. These technologies introduce new and powerful features to the Internet backbone, as the provision of QoS (Quality of Service) capabilities. However, to obtain a true end-to-end QoS, it is not enough to implement such technologies in the network core, it becomes indispensable to extend such improvements to the access networks, what is the aim of the several works presently under development. To contribute to this process, this Thesis presents the RSVP-SVC (Resource Reservation Protocol Switched Virtual Connection) that consists in an extension of RSVP-TE. The RSVP-SVC is presented herein as a mean to support a true end-to-end QoS, through the extension of MPLS scope. Thus, it is specified a Switched Virtual Connection (SVC) service to be used in the context of a MPLS User-to-Network Interface (MPLS UNI), that is able to efficiently establish and activate Label Switched Paths (LSP), starting from the access routers that satisfy the QoS requirements demanded by the applications. The RSVP-SVC was specified in Estelle, a Formal Description Technique (FDT) standardized by ISO. The edition, compilation, verification and simulation of RSVP-SVC were made by the EDT (Estelle Development Toolset) software. The benefits and most important issues to be considered when using the proposed protocol are also included

The ability to use Software Defined Radio (SDR) in the civilian mobile applications will make it possible for the next generation of mobile devices to handle multi-standard personal wireless devices and ubiquitous wireless devices. The original military standard created many beneficial characteristics for SDR, but resulted in a number of disadvantages as well. Many challenges in commercializing SDR are still the subject of interest in the software radio research community. Four main issues that have been already addressed are performance, size, weight, and power. ^ This investigation presents an in-depth study of SDR inter-components communications in terms of total link delay related to the number of components and packet sizes in systems based on Software Communication Architecture (SCA). The study is based on the investigation of the controlled environment platform. Results suggest that the total link delay does not linearly increase with the number of components and the packet sizes. The closed form expression of the delay was modeled using a logistic function in terms of the number of components and packet sizes. The model performed well when the number of components was large. ^ Based upon the mobility applications, energy consumption has become one of the most crucial limitations. SDR will not only provide flexibility of multi-protocol support, but this desirable feature will also bring a choice of mobile protocols. Having such a variety of choices available creates a problem in the selection of the most appropriate protocol to transmit. An investigation in a real-time algorithm to optimize energy efficiency was also performed. Communication energy models were used including switching estimation to develop a waveform selection algorithm. Simulations were performed to validate the concept.^

GMPLS is a generalized form of MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switching). MPLS is IP packet based and it uses MPLS-TE for Packet Traffic Engineering. GMPLS is extension to MPLS capabilities. It provides separation between transmission, control and management plane and network management. Control plane allows various applications like traffic engineering, service provisioning, and differentiated services. GMPLS control plane architecture includes signaling (RSVP-TE, CR-LDP) and routing (OSPF-TE, ISIS-TE) protocols. This paper provides an overview of the signaling protocols, describes their main functionalities, and provides a general evaluation of both the protocols.
