It is important to develop reliable finite element models for real structures not only in the design phase but also for the structural health monitoring and structural maintenance purposes. This paper describes the experience of the authors in using ambient vibration model identification techniques together with model updating tools to develop reliable finite element models of real civil engineering structures. Case studies of two real structures are presented in this paper. One is a 10 storey concrete building which is considered as a non-slender structure with complex boundary conditions. The other is a single span concrete foot bridge which is also a relatively inflexible planar structure with complex boundary conditions. Both structures are located at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and equipped with continuous structural health monitoring systems.

This paper introduces a novel modelling framework for identifying dynamic models of systems that are under feedback control. These models are identified under closed-loop conditions and produce a joint representation that includes both the plant and controller models in state space form. The joint plant/controller model is identified using subspace model identification (SMI), which is followed by the separation of the plant model from the identified one. Compared to previous research, this work (i) proposes a new modelling framework for identifying closed-loop systems, (ii) introduces a generic structure to represent the controller and (iii) explains how that the new framework gives rise to a simplified determination of the plant models. In contrast, the use of the conventional modelling approach renders the separation of the plant model a difficult task. The benefits of using the new model method are demonstrated using a number of application studies.

This paper deals with Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model identification of nonlinear systems using fuzzy clustering. In particular, an extended fuzzy Gustafson-Kessel (EGK) clustering algorithm, using robust competitive agglomeration (RCA), is developed for automatically constructing a TS fuzzy model from system input-output data. The EGK algorithm can automatically determine the 'optimal' number of clusters from the training data set. It is shown that the EGK approach is relatively insensitive to initialization and is less susceptible to local minima, a benefit derived from its agglomerate property. This issue is often overlooked in the current literature on nonlinear identification using conventional fuzzy clustering. Furthermore, the robust statistical concepts underlying the EGK algorithm help to alleviate the difficulty of cluster identification in the construction of a TS fuzzy model from noisy training data. A new hybrid identification strategy is then formulated, which combines the EGK algorithm with a locally weighted, least-squares method for the estimation of local sub-model parameters. The efficacy of this new approach is demonstrated through function approximation examples and also by application to the identification of an automatic voltage regulation (AVR) loop for a simulated 3 kVA laboratory micro-machine system.

This correspondence introduces a new orthogonal forward regression (OFR) model identification algorithm using D-optimality for model structure selection and is based on an M-estimators of parameter estimates. M-estimator is a classical robust parameter estimation technique to tackle bad data conditions such as outliers. Computationally, The M-estimator can be derived using an iterative reweighted least squares (IRLS) algorithm. D-optimality is a model structure robustness criterion in experimental design to tackle ill-conditioning in model Structure. The orthogonal forward regression (OFR), often based on the modified Gram-Schmidt procedure, is an efficient method incorporating structure selection and parameter estimation simultaneously. The basic idea of the proposed approach is to incorporate an IRLS inner loop into the modified Gram-Schmidt procedure. In this manner, the OFR algorithm for parsimonious model structure determination is extended to bad data conditions with improved performance via the derivation of parameter M-estimators with inherent robustness to outliers. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

It is well known that there is a dynamic relationship between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV). With increasing applications of functional MRI, where the blood oxygen-level-dependent signals are recorded, the understanding and accurate modeling of the hemodynamic relationship between CBF and CBV becomes increasingly important. This study presents an empirical and data-based modeling framework for model identification from CBF and CBV experimental data. It is shown that the relationship between the changes in CBF and CBV can be described using a parsimonious autoregressive with exogenous input model structure. It is observed that neither the ordinary least-squares (LS) method nor the classical total least-squares (TLS) method can produce accurate estimates from the original noisy CBF and CBV data. A regularized total least-squares (RTLS) method is thus introduced and extended to solve such an error-in-the-variables problem. Quantitative results show that the RTLS method works very well on the noisy CBF and CBV data. Finally, a combination of RTLS with a filtering method can lead to a parsimonious but very effective model that can characterize the relationship between the changes in CBF and CBV.

OBJECTIVES: Donation after circulatory declaration of death (DCDD) could significantly improve the number of cardiac grafts for transplantation. Graft evaluation is particularly important in the setting of DCDD given that conditions of cardio-circulatory arrest and warm ischaemia differ, leading to variable tissue injury. The aim of this study was to identify, at the time of heart procurement, means to predict contractile recovery following cardioplegic storage and reperfusion using an isolated rat heart model. Identification of reliable approaches to evaluate cardiac grafts is key in the development of protocols for heart transplantation with DCDD. METHODS: Hearts isolated from anaesthetized male Wistar rats (n = 34) were exposed to various perfusion protocols. To simulate DCDD conditions, rats were exsanguinated and maintained at 37°C for 15-25 min (warm ischaemia). Isolated hearts were perfused with modified Krebs-Henseleit buffer for 10 min (unloaded), arrested with cardioplegia, stored for 3 h at 4°C and then reperfused for 120 min (unloaded for 60 min, then loaded for 60 min). Left ventricular (LV) function was assessed using an intraventricular micro-tip pressure catheter. Statistical significance was determined using the non-parametric Spearman rho correlation analysis. RESULTS: After 120 min of reperfusion, recovery of LV work measured as developed pressure (DP)-heart rate (HR) product ranged from 0 to 15 ± 6.1 mmHg beats min(-1) 10(-3) following warm ischaemia of 15-25 min. Several haemodynamic parameters measured during early, unloaded perfusion at the time of heart procurement, including HR and the peak systolic pressure-HR product, correlated significantly with contractile recovery after cardioplegic storage and 120 min of reperfusion (P < 0.001). Coronary flow, oxygen consumption and lactate dehydrogenase release also correlated significantly with contractile recovery following cardioplegic storage and 120 min of reperfusion (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Haemodynamic and biochemical parameters measured at the time of organ procurement could serve as predictive indicators of contractile recovery. We believe that evaluation of graft suitability is feasible prior to transplantation with DCDD, and may, consequently, increase donor heart availability.

The main contribution of this paper is decomposition/separation of the compositie induction motors load from measurement at a system bus. In power system transmission buses load is represented by static and dynamic loads. The induction motor is considered as the main dynamic loads and in the practice for major transmission buses there will be many and various induction motors contributing. Particularly at an industrial bus most of the load is dynamic types. Rather than traing to extract models of many machines this paper seeks to identify three groups of induction motors to represent the dynamic loads. Three groups of induction motors used to characterize the load. These are the small groups (4kw to 11kw), the medium groups (15kw to 180kw) and the large groups (above 630kw). At first these groups with different percentage contribution of each group is composite. After that from the composite models, each motor percentage contribution is decomposed by using the least square algorithms. In power system commercial and the residential buses static loads percentage is higher than the dynamic loads percentage. To apply this theory to other types of buses such as residential and commerical it is good practice to represent the total load as a combination of composite motor loads, constant impedence loads and constant power loads. To validate the theory, the 24hrs of Sydney West data is decomposed according to the three groups of motor models.

The aim of this study was to explore two of the mechanisms by which transformational leaders have a positive influence on followers. It examined the mediating role of follower’s leader and group identification on the associations among different transformational leader behaviours and follower job satisfaction and supervisor-rated job performance. One hundred and seventy-nine healthcare employees and 44 supervisors participated in the study. The results from multilevel structural equation modelling provided results that partially supported the predicted model. Identification with the leader significantly mediated the positive associations between supportive leadership, intellectual stimulation, personal recognition, in the prediction of job satisfaction and job performance. Leader identification also mediated the relationship between supportive leadership, intellectual stimulation, personal recognition, and group identification. However, group identification did not mediate the associations between vision leadership and inspirational communication, in the prediction of job satisfaction and job performance. The results highlight the role of individualized forms of leadership and leader identification in enhancing follower outcomes.

Online dynamic load modeling has become possible with the availability of Static Voltage Compensator (SVC) and Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) devices. The power of the load response to the small random bounded voltage fluctuations caused from SVC can be measured by PMU for modelling purposes. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the capability of identifying an aggregated load model from high voltage substation level in the online environment. The induction motor is used as the main test subject since it contributes the majority of the dynamic loads. A test system representing simple electromechanical generator model serving dynamic loads through the transmission network is used to verify the proposed method. Also, dynamic load with multiple induction motors are modeled to achieve a better realistic load representation.

The paper presents the results of a computational modeling for damage identification process for an axial rod representing an end-bearing pile foundation with known damage and a simply supported beam representing a bridge girder. The paper proposes a methodology for damage identification from measured natural frequencies of a contiguously damaged reinforced concrete axial rod and beam, idealized with distributed damage model. Identification of damage is from Equal_Eigen_value_change (Iso_Eigen_value_Change) contours, plotted between pairs of different frequencies. The performance of the method is checked for a wide variation of damage positions and extents. An experiment conducted on a free-free axially loaded reinforced concrete member and a flexural beam is shown as examples to prove the pros and cons of this method. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. In recent reports, adolescents and young adults (AYA) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have had a better outcome with pediatric treatment than with adult protocols. ALL can be classified into biologic subgroups according to immunophenotype and cytogenetics, with different clinical characteristics and outcome. The proportions of the subgroups are different in children and adults. ALL subtypes in AYA patients are less well characterized. In this study, the treatment and outcome of ALL in AYA patients aged 10-25 years in Finland on pediatric and adult protocols was retrospectively analyzed. In total, 245 patients were included. The proportions of biologic subgroups in different age groups were determined. Patients with initially normal or failed karyotype were examined with oligonucleotide microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH). Also deletions and instability of chromosome 9p were screened in ALL patients. In addition, patients with other hematologic malignancies were screened for 9p instability. aCGH data were also used to determine a gene set that classifies AYA patients at diagnosis according to their risk of relapse. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the value of the set of genes as prognostic classifiers. The 5-year event-free survival of AYA patients treated with pediatric or adult protocols was 67% and 60% (p=0.30), respectively. White blood cell count larger than 100x109/l was associated with poor prognosis. Patients treated with pediatric protocols and assigned to an intermediate-risk group fared significantly better than those of the pediatric high-risk or adult treatment groups. Deletions of 9p were detected in 46% of AYA ALL patients. The chromosomal region 9p21.3 was always affected, and the CDKN2A gene was always deleted. In about 15% of AYA patients, the 9p21.3 deletion was smaller than 200 kb in size, and therefore, probably undetectable with conventional methods. Deletion of 9p was the most common aberration of AYA ALL patients with initially normal karyotype. Instability of 9p, defined as multiple separate areas of copy number loss or homozygous loss within a larger heterozygous area in 9p, was detected in 19% (n=27) of ALL patients. This abnormality was restricted to ALL; none of the patients with other hematologic malignancies had the aberration. The prognostic model identification procedure resulted in a model of four genes: BAK1, CDKN2B, GSTM1, and MT1F. The copy number profile combinations of these genes differentiated between AYA ALL patients at diagnosis depending on their risk of relapse. Deletions of CDKN2B and BAK1 in combination with amplification of GSTM1 and MT1F were associated with a higher probability of relapse. Unlike all previous studies, we found that the outcome of AYA patients with ALL treated using pediatric or adult therapeutic protocols was comparable. The success of adult ALL therapy emphasizes the benefit of referral of patients to academic centers and adherence to research protocols. 9p deletions and instability are common features of ALL and may act together with oncogene-activating translocations in leukemogenesis. New and more sensitive methods of molecular cytogenetics can reveal previously cryptic genetic aberrations with an important role in leukemic development and prognosis and that may be potential targets of therapy. aCGH also provides a viable approach for model design aiming at evaluation of risk of relapse in ALL.

Measurement of in-plane motion with high resolution and large bandwidth enables model-identification and real-time control of motion-stages. This paper presents an optical beam deflection based system for measurement of in-plane motion of both macro- and micro-scale motion stages. A curved reflector is integrated with the motion stage to achieve sensitivity to in-plane translational motion along two axes. Under optimal settings, the measurement system is shown to theoretically achieve sub-angstrom measurement resolution over a bandwidth in excess of 1 kHz and negligible cross-sensitivity to linear motion. Subsequently, the proposed technique is experimentally demonstrated by measuring the in-plane motion of a piezo flexure stage and a scanning probe microcantilever. For the former case, reflective spherical balls of different radii are employed to measure the in-plane motion and the measured sensitivities are shown to agree with theoretical values, on average, to within 8.3%. For the latter case, a prototype polydimethylsiloxane micro-reflector is integrated with the microcantilever. The measured in-plane motion of the microcantilever probe is used to identify nonlinearities and the transient dynamics of the piezo-stage upon which the probe is mounted. These are subsequently compensated by means of feedback control. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
