Spectral gamma ray (SGR) logs are used as stratigraphic tools in correlation, sequence stratigraphy and most recently, in clastic successions as a proxy for changes in hinterland palaeoweathering. In this study we analyse the spectral gamma ray signal recorded in two boreholes that penetrated the carbonate and evaporate-dominated Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB) in the South Pars Gasfield (offshore Iran, Persian Gulf) in an attempt to analyse palaeoenvironmental changes from the upper Permian (Upper Dalan Formation) and lower Triassic (Lower Kangan Formation). The results are compared to lithological changes, total organic carbon (TOC) contents and published stable isotope (δ18O, δ13C) results. This work is the first to consider palaeoclimatic effects on SGR logs from a carbonate/evaporate succession. While Th/U ratios compare well to isotope data (and thus a change to less arid hinterland climates from the Late Permian to the Early Triassic), Th/K ratios do not, suggesting a control not related to hinterland weathering. Furthermore, elevated Th/U ratios in the Early Triassic could reflect a global drawdown in U, rather than a more humid episode in the sediment hinterlands, with coincident changes in TOC. Previous work that used spectral gamma ray data in siliciclastic successions as a palaeoclimate proxy may not apply in carbonate/evaporate sedimentary rocks.

The Mont Collon mafic complex is one of the best preserved examples of the Early Permian magmatism in the Central Alps, related to the intra-continental collapse of the Variscan belt. It mostly consists (> 95 vol.%) of ol+hy-nonnative plagioclase-wehrlites, olivine- and cpx-gabbros with cumulitic structures, crosscut by acid dikes. Pegmatitic gabbros, troctolites and anorthosites outcrop locally. A well-preserved cumulative, sequence is exposed in the Dents de Bertol area (center of intrusion). PT-calculations indicate that this layered magma chamber emplaced at mid-crustal levels at about 0.5 GPa and 1100 degrees C. The Mont Collon cumulitic rocks record little magmatic differentiation, as illustrated by the restricted range of clinopyroxene mg-number (Mg#(cpx)=83-89). Whole-rock incompatible trace-element contents (e.g. Nb, Zr, Ba) vary largely and without correlation with major-element composition. These features are characteristic of an in-situ crystallization process with variable amounts of interstitial liquid L trapped between the cumulus mineral phases. LA-ICPMS measurements show that trace-element distribution in the latter is homogeneous, pointing to subsolidus re-equilibration between crystals and interstitial melts. A quantitative modeling based on Langmuir's in-situ crystallization equation successfully duplicated the REE concentrations in cumulitic minerals of all rock facies of the intrusion. The calculated amounts of interstitial liquid L vary between 0 and 35% for degrees of differentiation F of 0 to 20%, relative to the least evolved facies of the intrusion. L values are well correlated with the modal proportions of interstitial amphibole and whole-rock incompatible trace-element concentrations (e.g. Zr, Nb) of the tested samples. However, the in-situ crystallization model reaches its limitations with rock containing high modal content of REE-bearing minerals (i.e. zircon), such as pegmatitic gabbros. Dikes of anorthositic composition, locally crosscutting the layered lithologies, evidence that the Mont Collon rocks evolved in open system with mixing of intercumulus liquids of different origins and possibly contrasting compositions. The proposed model is not able to resolve these complex open systems, but migrating liquids could be partly responsible for the observed dispersion of points in some correlation diagrams. We present four SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages for the Choiyoi igneous province from the San Rafael Block, central-western Argentina. Dated samples come from the Yacimiento Los Reyunos Formation (281.4 +/- 2.5 Ma) of the Cochico Group (Lower Choiyoi section: andesitic breccias, dacitic to rhyolitic ignimbrites and continental conglomerates). Agua de los Burros Formation (264.8 +/- 2.3 Ma and 264.5 +/- 3.0 Ma) and Cerro Carrizalito Formation (251.9 +/- 2.7 Ma Upper Choiyoi section: rhyolitic ignimbrites and pyroclastic flows) spanning the entire Permian succession of the Choiyoi igneous province. A single ziron from the El Imperial Formation, that is overlain unconformably by the Choiyoi succession, yielded an early Permian age (297.2 +/- 5.3 Ma). while the main detrital zircon population indicated an Ordovician age (453.7 +/- 8.1 Ma). The new data establishes a more precise Permian age (Artinskian-Lopingian) for the section studied spanning 30 Ma of volcanic activity. Volcanological observations for the Choiyoi succession support the occurrence of explosive eruptions of plinian to ultraplinian magnitudes, capable of injecting enormous volumes of tephra in the troposphere-stratosphere. The new SHRIMP ages indicate contemporaneity between the Choyoi succession and the upper part of the Parana Basin late Paleozoic section, from the Irad up to the Rio do Rasto formations, encompassing about 24 Ma. Geochemical data show a general congruence in compositional and tectonic settings between the volcanics and Parana Basin Permian ash fall derived layers of bentonites. Thickness and granulometry of ash fall layers broadly fit into the depletion curve versus distance from the remote source vent of ultraplinian eruptions. Thus, we consider that the Choiyoi igneous province was the source of ash fall deposits in the upper Permian section of the Parana Basin. Data presented here allow a more consistent correlation between tectono-volcanic Permian events along the paleo-Pacific margin of southwestern Gondwana and the geological evolution of neighboring Paleozoic foreland basins in South America and Africa. Three species of chondrichthyans are reported from conglomeratic sandstone at the base of the Lower Permian (Artinskian) Irati Formation (Parana Basin) near Rio Claro, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The fossils include: 1) dispersed teeth of the petalodont ltapyrodus punctatus Silva Santos 1990, first described from the Permian (Artinskian) Pedra do Fogo Formation, Parnaiba Basin, Northeast Brazil; 2) a new species of tooth of the Order Orodontiformes; and 3) a new species of finspine of the Order Ctenacanthiformes. These fossils occur in an allochthonous assemblage of vertebrate remains including other Chondrichthyes, Xenacanthiformes and cladodonts, paleonisciform bony fish, and tetrapods. This discovery is a significant contribution to the sparse record of South American Chondrichthyes from the Early Permian and raises questions regarding the paleoenvironmental adaptations among these fish within Paleozoic basins of Brazil at this time. The present Australian continent was a major component of the north eastern peninsula of Gondwana, itself the southern region of Pangaea, during the Permian period. Surrounding what is now Australia, were additional elements of north eastern Gondwana that are now incorporated into the tectonically complex regions of New Zealand, New Caledonia, the island of New Guinea, Timor, south east Asia, the Himalaya and southern Tibet. India was to the west and south west and Antarctica to the south. Marine water temperatures ranged from cold to temperate and tropical as Permian global climates ameliorated, global surface ocean circulation systems warmed, and due to rifting and northward drifting of some terranes.

Provincialism of global marine faunas was pronounced during the Permian and hence refined biostratigraphical correlations are often fraught with difficulty. The 'middle' Permian stratotypes approved by the International Subcommission on the Permian System have little direct relevance to correlations within the Gondwanan Region at the level of operational biostratigraphical zonal schemes. Brachiopoda are a dominant marine benthonic faunal element of Permian Gondwanan faunas and they provide refined correlations between marine basins within a specific faunal province. Modem faunal provinces are recognised by the distribution patterns of species and genera belonging to a single family or superfamily such as the Papilionoidea within the Insecta. This review provides an example from Permian Brachiopoda, using the distribution data of genera and subgenera of the superfamily Ingelarelloidea, in order to demonstrate the ability to define provinces and their 'Wallace lines' of demarcation between provinces in the geological past.

Correlations of the Permian sequences for sixteen regions of north eastern Gondwana during the Permian are presented in this review. These correlations are compared with Permian sequences of the Australian continent. Broad conclusions on palaeoclimatic change and tectonic events are summarised for six time intervals of the Permian Period.

The Asselian-Sakmarian-early Artinskian time interval indicates a change from cold to temperate depositional environments. Glacial deposits and low diversity Gondwanan marine faunas are succeeded by younger, warmer water, clastic and bioclastic sequences with moderately diverse marine faunas. Deposition of these sequences is occasionally associated with basaltic volcanism and initial rifting of the peripheral northern Gondwanan margin.

During the Late Artinskian-Kungurian (including Early Ufimian) time interval, climate amelioration occurred with the onset of carbonate deposition in several Cimmerian terranes. Basaltic volcanism in several terranes is indicative of significant rifting and the opening of the Meso-Tethys.

The Roadian (Late Ufimian) and Wordian-Capitanian (including Kazanian-Midian) time intervals were characterised by widespread, subtropical, marine carbonate depositional sequences. These occurred throughout the Cimmerian blocks as they drifted northward and on the more northerly parts of the Meso-Tethyan southern margin. These transgressive sequences may rest on significant unconformity surfaces. Equivalent carbonate units are known in the offshore and subsurface sequences of western Australia. Andesitic, convergent plate margin volcanism and volcaniclastic sequences are present in eastern Australia.

The Wuchiapingian time slice is characterised by widespread marine transgressions which extended into the north western basins of Australia.

The Changhsingian time slice is represented by relatively minor marine transgressive events in the Trans-Himalaya with the Selong section of Tibet being probably the most complete Permo-Triassic sequence for the southern margin of the Meso-Tethys.

Two Permian brachiopod genera, Rhynchopora King and Blasispirifer Kulikov, are reported for the first time from the Middle Permian, lower part of the Moribu Formation in the Hida Gaien Belt, central Japan. The Moribu species are closely compared with similar forms from the Middle Permian Barabash Formation (lower Chandalaz Series) in the Barabash area of South Primorye, Russian Far East. The discovery of these two genera, which exhibit close relationships with Middle Permian brachiopod faunas of South Primorye and the broad Boreal Realm, implies that tha Hida Gaien Belt was paleobiogeographically and paleogeographically close to the western part (Voznesenka Belt) of South Primorye, both situated in a middle latitudinal setting in the Northern Hemisphere on the southeastern side of the Bureya Block and lay proximal to and slightly northeast of the Sino-Korea Block during the Permian.
