Error correction in second language writing : teachers’ beliefs, practices, and students’ preferences

Error correction is perhaps the most widely used method for responding to student writing. While various studies have investigated the effectiveness of providing error correction, there has been relatively little research incorporating teachers' beliefs, practices, and students' preferences in written error correction. The current study adopted features of an ethnographic research design in order to explore the beliefs and practices of ESL teachers, and investigate the preferences of L2 students regarding written error correction in the context of a language institute situated in the Brisbane metropolitan district. In this study, two ESL teachers and two groups of adult intermediate L2 students were interviewed and observed. The beliefs and practices of the teachers were elicited through interviews and classroom observations. The preferences of L2 students were elicited through focus group interviews. Responses of the participants were encoded and analysed. Results of the teacher interviews showed that teachers believe that providing written error correction has advantages and disadvantages. Teachers believe that providing written error correction helps students improve their proof-reading skills in order to revise their writing more efficiently. However, results also indicate that providing written error correction is very time consuming. Furthermore, teachers prefer to provide explicit written feedback strategies during the early stages of the language course, and move to a more implicit strategy of providing written error correction in order to facilitate language learning. On the other hand, results of the focus group interviews suggest that students regard their teachers' practice of written error correction as important in helping them locate their errors and revise their writing. However, students also feel that the process of providing written error correction is time consuming. Nevertheless, students want and expect their teachers to provide written feedback because they believe that the benefits they gain from receiving feedback on their writing outweigh the apparent disadvantages of their teachers' written error correction strategies.

Análisis del fallo de la Sala Especializada de lo Contencioso Tributario de la Corte Nacional de Justicia, dictado dentro del recurso No. 188-2010, referente a la legalidad de la Tasa por Servicios de Seguridad Ciudadana (Jurisprudencia)

El presente trabajo tiene por objeto analizar la sentencia emitida por la Sala de lo Contencioso Tributario de la Corte Nacional de Justicia, relativa a la impugnación de la legalidad de la “Tasa de Seguridad ciudadana”, que aplica el Municipio del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito. Fallo controversial en que se decidió desechar la demanda por caducidad del derecho para la impugnación, toda vez, que a criterio de los juzgadores ha transcurrido más de tres años desde que la referida tasa entró en vigencia. Con tal propósito, se examina críticamente los fundamentos sobre los cuales la Sala decidió desechar la demanda, así mismo, se establece los parámetros de orientación sobre cuál pudo ser el contenido de un pronunciamiento conforme con la Constitución y leyes vigentes.

Os impactos do acirramento da competitividade na gestão dos hospitais privados na região metropolitana de Vitória

O objetivo deste estudo é considerar e avaliar os impactos do acirramento da competitividade, que promoveram as mudanças que vêm acontecendo na gestão dos hospitais privados da Região Metropolitana de Vitória. Para cumprir tais metas, foi preciso apontar a natureza dessas mudanças, bem como os beneficios e perdas acarretados pelas empresas, que incidem diretamente sobre os serviços prestados à comunidade. A pesquisa - descritiva e explicativa - foi realizada por meio de pesquisa de campo e bibliográfica. O estudo foi realizado a partir de uma amostra de hospitais privados da Região Metropolitana de Vitória e os dados foram coletados com superintendentes, diretores, gerentes e trabalhadores dos serviços, por intermédio de questionários e entrevistas com diversos outros atores que pertencem ao cenário constituído - médicos, consultores e usuários, planos e seguros de saúde, Conselho Regional de Medicina, Associação dos Hospitais e Sindicato dos Enfermeiros. A partir da pesquisa realizada, foi possível concluir que os gestores devem rever alguns conceitos que influem na gestão hospitalar e prepararse para enfrentar as mudanças que ocorrem no mercado. É preciso flexibilizar-se e buscar a incorporação de novos paradigmas que se façam necessários.
