Brisbane City Hall (BCH) is arguably one of Brisbane’s most notable and iconic buildings. Serving as the public’s central civic and municipal building since 1930, the importance of this heritage listed building to cultural significance and identity is unquestionable. This attribute is reflected within the local government, with a simplified image of the halls main portico entrance supplying Brisbane City Council with its insignia and trademark signifier. Regardless of these qualities, this building has been neglected in a number of ways, primarily in the physical sense with built materials, but also, and just as importantly, through inaccurate and undocumented works. Numerous restoration and renovation works have been undertaken throughout BCH’s lifetime, however the records of these amendments are far and few between. Between 2010 and 2013, BCH underwent major restoration works, the largest production project undertaken on the building since its initial construction. Just prior to this conservation process, the full extent of the buildings deterioration was identified, much of which there was little to no original documentation of. This has led to a number of issues pertaining to what investigators expected to find within the building, versus what was uncovered (the unexpected), which have resulted directly from this lack of data. This absence of record keeping is the key factor that has contributed to the decay and unknown deficiencies that had amassed within BCH. Accordingly, this raises a debate about the methods of record keeping, and the need for a more advanced process that is able to be integrated within architectural and engineering programs, whilst still maintaining the ability to act as a standalone database. The immediate objective of this research is to investigate the restoration process of BCH, with focus on the auditorium, to evaluate possible strategies to record and manage data connected to building pathology so that a framework can be developed for a digital heritage management system. The framework produced for this digital tool will enable dynamic uses of a centralised database and aims to reduce the significant data loss. Following an in-depth analysis of this framework, it can be concluded that the implementation of the suggested digital tool would directly benefit BCH, and could ultimately be incorporated into a number of heritage related built form.

As weather and climate models move toward higher resolution, there is growing excitement about potential future improvements in the understanding and prediction of atmospheric convection and its interaction with larger-scale phenomena. A meeting in January 2013 in Dartington, Devon was convened to address the best way to maximise these improvements, specifically in a UK context but with international relevance. Specific recommendations included increased convective-scale observations, high-resolution virtual laboratories, and a system of parameterization test beds with a range of complexities. The main recommendation was to facilitate the development of physically based convective parameterizations that are scale-aware, non-local, non-equilibrium, and stochastic.

Finite-element method is used to predict the buoyancy-driven convection in a horizontal layer of fluid (aluminum melt) overlying a porous layer (cathode) saturated with the same fluid. This work aims to compare the Hall–Héroult process in electrolytic cell, where a layer of molten aluminum is reduced over the porous cathode surface. In this study, the physical system of the aluminum melt (fluid) and cathode (porous) together is considered as a composite system of fluid overlying porous layer. The main objective of this study to analyse the velocity components in thin fluid layer and its impact on a porous cathode surface if there is any. In addition, an externally imposed time-independent uniform magnetic field is used to analyse its influence on natural convective forces. The physical system of fluid overlying porous layer is analysed at different Hartmann, Darcy, and fluid-Rayleigh numbers for a fixed Prandtl number (Pr = 0.014). The predicted data show that the convective forces, caused by buoyancy-driven flow, are significant. It is shown that the velocity peaks moves toward the solid wall because of the presence of a magnetic field creating a stronger boundary-layer growth over the permeable cathode surface. The predicted results are plotted in terms of average Nusselt number and Darcy number to indicate the influence of pores and permeability on overall convective heat-transfer characteristics.

In simulations of the hydrodynamics of the multiphase flow in gas– liquid systems with finite sizes of bubbles, the important thing is to compute explicitly the time evolution of the gas–liquid interface in many engineering applications. The most commonly used methods representing this approach are: the volume of fluid and the phase field methods. The later has gained significant interest because of its capability of performing numerical computations on a fixed Cartesian grid without having to parametrise these objects (Eulerian approach) and at the same time it allows to follow the interface ( for example bubble’s shape) that change the topology. In this paper, both numerical (phase field method) and experimental results for the bubble shapes underneath a downward facing plane is presented. Experiments are carried out to see the bubble sliding motion underneath a horizontal and inclined anode. It is assumed that the bubble formed under the anode surface is deformed (flattened) due to buoyant field before it goes around the anode corner. The bubble elongates to form a tail-like shape. The change in shape of the bubble is almost instantaneous and has a significant effect on the localised hydrodynamics around the bubble, which could influence the dynamics of the flow patterns in the Hall–Héroult cell. This deformation is the main cause of the bubble wake and the induced flow field in the aluminium cell. Various parameters such as bubble size, deformation and its sliding mechanism at different surface tensions are discussed and compared with experimental results.

Electric propulsion is now a succeful method for primary propulsion of deep space long duration missions and for geosyncronous satellite attitude control. Closed Drift Thruster, so called Hall Thruster or SPT (Stationary Plasma Thruster), was primarily conceived in USSR (the ancient Soviet Union) and, since then, it has been developed by space agencies, space research institutes and industries in several countries such as France, USA, Israel, Russian Federation and Brazil. In this work we present the main features of the Permanent Magnet Hall Thruster (PMHT) developed at the Plasma Laboratory of the University of Brasilia. The idea of using an array of permanent magnets, instead of an electromagnet, to produce a radial magnetic field inside the plasma channel of the thruster is very significant. It allows the development of a Hall Thruster with power consumption low enough to be used in small and medium size satellites. Description of a new vacuum chamber used to test the second prototype of the PMHT (PHALL II) will be given. PHALL II has an aluminum plasma chamber and is smaller with 15 cm diameter and will contain rare earth magnets. We will show plasma density and temperature space profiles inside and outside the thruster channel. Ion temperature measurements based on Doppler broadening of spectral lines and ion energy measurements are also shown. Based on the measured plasma parameters we constructed an aptitude figure of the PMHT. It contains the specific impulse, total thrust, propellant flow rate and power consumption necessary for orbit raising of satellites. Based on previous studies of geosyncronous satellite orbit positioning we perform numerical simulations of satellite orbit raising from an altitude of 700 km to 36000 km using a PMHT operating in the 100 mN - 500 mN thrust range. In order to perform these calculations integration techniques were used. The main simulation paraters were orbit raising time, fuel mass, total satellite mass, thrust and exaust velocity. We conclude comparing our results with results obtainned with known space missions performed with Hall Thrusters. © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
