Virtual Pole from Magnetic Anomaly (VPMA) is a new multi-disciplinary methodology that estimates the age of a source rock from its magnetic anomaly, taken directly from available aeromagnetic data. The idea is to use those anomalies in which a strong remanent magnetic component is likely to occur. Once the total magnetization of the anomaly is computed through any of the currently available methods, the line that connects all virtual paleogeographic poles is related with the position, on a paleogeographic projection, of the appropriate age fragment of the APWT curve. We applied this procedure to five (5) well-known magnetic anomalies of the South American plate in SE Brazil, all of them associated to alkaline complexes of Mesozoic age. The apparent ages obtained from VPMA on three of the anomalies where the radiometric age of the source rock is known - Tapira, Araxa and Juquia were inside the error interval of the published ages. The VPMA apparent ages of the other two, where the age of the source rock is not known (Registro and Pariqueracu magnetic anomalies) were geologically coherent. We expect that the application of the VPMA methodology as a reconnaissance geochronological tool may contribute to geological knowledge over continental areas, especially when the source rocks of the magnetic anomalies am unknown or buried below superficial sediments. A study of maar-diatreme volcanoes has been perfomed by inversion of gravity and magnetic data. The geophysical inverse problem has been solved by means of the damped nonlinear least-squares method. To ensure stability and convergence of the solution of the inverse problem, a mathematical tool, consisting in data weighting and model scaling, has been worked out. Theoretical gravity and magnetic modeling of maar-diatreme volcanoes has been conducted in order to get information, which is used for a simple rough qualitative and/or quantitative interpretation. The information also serves as a priori information to design models for the inversion and/or to assist the interpretation of inversion results. The results of theoretical modeling have been used to roughly estimate the heights and the dip angles of the walls of eight Eifel maar-diatremes — each taken as a whole. Inversemodeling has been conducted for the Schönfeld Maar (magnetics) and the Hausten-Morswiesen Maar (gravity and magnetics). The geometrical parameters of these maars, as well as the density and magnetic properties of the rocks filling them, have been estimated. For a reliable interpretation of the inversion results, beside the knowledge from theoretical modeling, it was resorted to other tools such like field transformations and spectral analysis for complementary information. Geologic models, based on thesynthesis of the respective interpretation results, are presented for the two maars mentioned above. The results gave more insight into the genesis, physics and posteruptive development of the maar-diatreme volcanoes. A classification of the maar-diatreme volcanoes into three main types has been elaborated. Relatively high magnetic anomalies are indicative of scoria cones embeded within maar-diatremes if they are not caused by a strong remanent component of the magnetization. Smaller (weaker) secondary gravity and magnetic anomalies on the background of the main anomaly of a maar-diatreme — especially in the boundary areas — are indicative for subsidence processes, which probably occurred in the late sedimentation phase of the posteruptive development. Contrary to postulates referring to kimberlite pipes, there exists no generalized systematics between diameter and height nor between geophysical anomaly and the dimensions of the maar-diatreme volcanoes. Although both maar-diatreme volcanoes and kimberlite pipes are products of phreatomagmatism, they probably formed in different thermodynamic and hydrogeological environments. In the case of kimberlite pipes, large amounts of magma and groundwater, certainly supplied by deep and large reservoirs, interacted under high pressure and temperature conditions. This led to a long period phreatomagmatic process and hence to the formation of large structures. Concerning the maar-diatreme and tuff-ring-diatreme volcanoes, the phreatomagmatic process takes place due to an interaction between magma from small and shallow magma chambers (probably segregated magmas) and small amounts of near-surface groundwater under low pressure and temperature conditions. This leads to shorter time eruptions and consequently to structures of smaller size in comparison with kimberlite pipes. Nevertheless, the results show that the diameter to height ratio for 50% of the studied maar-diatremes is around 1, whereby the dip angle of the diatreme walls is similar to that of the kimberlite pipes and lies between 70 and 85°. Note that these numerical characteristics, especially the dip angle, hold for the maars the diatremes of which — estimated by modeling — have the shape of a truncated cone. This indicates that the diatreme can not be completely resolved by inversion.

Given the importance of the inversion of seamount magnetic anomalies, particularly to the motion of the Pacific plate, it is important to gain a better understanding of the nature of the magnetic source of these features. Although different in detail, Ninetyeast Ridge is composed of submarine and subaerial igneous rocks that are similar to those found at many seamounts, making it a suitable proxy. We report here on the magnetic petrology of a collection of samples from Ninetyeast Ridge in the Indian Ocean. Our purpose is to determine the relationship between primary petrology, subsequent alteration, and magnetic properties of the recovered rocks. Such information will eventually lead to a more complete understanding of the magnetization of seamounts and presumably improvements in the accuracy of anomaly inversions. Three basement sites were drilled on Ninetyeast Ridge, with recovery of subaerial basalt flows at the first two (Sites 756 and 757) and submarine massive and pillow flows at the final one (Site 758). The three sites were distinctly different. Site 756 was dominated by ilmenite. What titanomagnetite was present had undergone deuteric alteration and secondary hematite was present in many samples. The magnetization was moderate and stable although it yielded a paleolatitude somewhat lower than expected. Site 757 was highly oxidized, presumably while above sea level. It was dominated by primary titanomagnetite, which was deuterically altered. Secondary hematite was common. Magnetization was relatively weak but quite stable. The paleolatitude for all but the lowermost flows was approximately 40° lower than expected. Site 758 was also dominated by primary titanomagnetite. There was relatively little oxidation with most primary titanomagnetite showing no evidence of high-temperature alteration. No secondary hematite was in evidence. This site had the highest magnetization of the three (although somewhat low relative to other seamounts) but was relatively unstable with significant viscous remanence in many samples. Paleolatitude was close to the expected value. It is not possible, at present, to confidently associate these rocks with specific locations in a seamount structure. A possible and highly speculative model would place rocks similar to Site 757 near the top of the edifice, Site 756 lower down but still erupted above sea level, and Site 758 underlying these units, erupted while the seamount was still below sea level.

We have studied the magnetic properties of 22 samples from DSDP Leg 83 to determine the origin of remanence and its relationship to such problems as the tectonic and chemical evolution of the section, the depth of the magnetized layer, and the applicability of magnetic properties of ophiolites to the marine crust. The magnitude of natural remanence has fairly typical values in the uppermost part of the section, falls two to three orders of magnitude in the transition zone, and returns to values slightly less than the upper part in the dike complex. This behavior reflects, for the most part, variations in the amount of magnetic minerals present. Directional behavior is highly variable throughout the section and often shows complexity even on the level of a single sample. Curie temperature measurements and preliminary opaque petrography indicate that the remanence is chemical in origin and probably involves a resetting of the original thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) direction. Selective destructive demagnetization of four breccia samples shows that the remanence of the clasts was acquired prior to consolidation and did not change significantly thereafter. There are also indications that some of the remanence may be carried by secondary magnetic phases. A comparison of these samples with comparable ophiolite rocks is equivocal, with similarities in remanence characteristics but differences in magnetic mineralogy. As for magnetic anomalies, the transition zone is too weakly magnetized to contribute significantly. The available data on the dike complex are inconclusive and their contribution is still open to debate.

A total of 500.7 m of continuous, vertical, oceanic gabbroic section was recovered during Leg 118. The gabbros obtained exhibited various degrees of alteration and deformation, which gave us a good opportunity to study the magnetic properties of oceanic gabbros. Many of these gabbros, which are mainly Fe-Ti oxide gabbros, have strong and unstable secondary magnetic components that were acquired during drilling. Stable inclinations, which are probably in-situ magnetic directions, show a single polarity, with an average value of 66° (±5°), meaning that the studied 501-m oceanic gabbroic block may be a candidate for the source of the marine magnetic anomaly. This may also imply that the metamorphism of oceanic gabbros causing acquisition of magnetization probably occurred within one geomagnetic polarity chron (about 0.3 to 0.7 m.y.) after these gabbros formed at the ridge, leading us to conclude that oceanic gabbros record the so-called Vine-Matthews-Morley type of initial magnetization at the ridge. The average intensity value of stable magnetic components of individual samples, which may be a minimum estimate for remanent magnetizations, is 1.6 A/m. Assuming this magnetic intensity value and a uniform magnetization within an oceanic gabbroic layer having a thickness of 4.5 km (i.e., whole layer 3), it is possible to explain most of the marine magnetic anomaly. If magnetic properties of the samples obtained from Hole 735B are common to oceanic gabbros, layer 3 may contribute more significantly to seafloor spreading magnetic anomalies than previously thought.

The Sør Rondane Mountains (SRM) in eastern Dronning Maud Land (DML) are located in an area, where two apparent Pan-African (650-520 Ma) orogenic mobile belts appear to intersect, the East African-Antarctic Orogen and the Kuunga Orogen. Hence, a better understanding of the tectonic structure of the Sør Rondane region is an important key for unravelling the complex geodynamic evolution of the eastern DML and adjacent regions of East Antarctica during the Late Neoproterozoic/Early Palaeozoic amalgamation of Gondwana. The SRM were recently (2011-2012) aerogeophysically investigated with a 5 km flight line spacing, covering a total area of ~140,000 km². The aeromagnetic data are correlated with ground-based magnetic susceptibility measurements and geological field data and allow to project tectonic terranes and individual structures into ice-covered areas. Magnetic anomalies and basement foliation trends are collinear in areas dominated by simple shear deformation, whereas an area of large-scale refolding correlates with a subdued small-scale broken magnetic anomaly pattern. The latter area can be regarded as a distinct tectonic domain, the central Sør Rondane corridor. It magnetically separates the SRM into an eastern, a central, and a western portion. This subdivision is presumably related to late Pan-African extensional tectonics and suggests that such a tectonic regime may play a larger role than previously assumed. Voluminous late Pan-African granitoids, which are mainly undeformed, correlate with positive magnetic anomalies between +30 and +80 nT, while a strong magnetic high (+680 nT) near the granitic intrusion at Dufekfjellet is caused by a highly magnetised enigmatic body. The recently discovered prominent magnetic anomaly province of southeastern DML continues into the southern part of the Sør Rondane region, where only a few outcrops are exposed. Findings at these westernmost nunataks of the SRM indicate that the subdued magnetic anomaly pattern of this southeastern DML province is most likely caused by the predominance of metasedimentary rocks of yet unknown age.

During Leg 125, scientists drilled two serpentinite seamounts: Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc and Torishima Forearc Seamount in the Izu-Bonin forearc. Grain densities of the serpentinized peridotites range from 2.44 to 3.02 g/cm**3. The NRM intensity of the serpentinized peridotites ranges from 0.01 to 0.59 A/m and that of serpentine sediments ranges from 0.01 to 0.43 A/m. Volume susceptibilities of serpentinized peridotites range from 0.05 * 10**-3 SI to 9.78 * 10**-3 SI and from 0.12 * 10**-3 to 4.34 * 10**-3 SI in the sediments. Koenigsberger ratios, a measure of the relative contributions of remanent vs. induced magnetization to the magnetic anomaly, vary from 0.09 to 80.93 in the serpentinites and from 0.06 to 4.74 in the sediments. The AF demagnetization behavior of the serpentinized peridotites shows that a single component of remanence (probably a chemical remanence carried by secondary magnetite) can be isolated in many samples that have a median destructive field less than 9.5 mT. Multiple remanence components are observed in other samples. Serpentine sediments exhibit similar behavior. Comparison of the AF demagnetization of saturation isothermal remanence and NRM suggests that the serpentinized peridotites contain both single-domain and multidomain magnetite particles. The variability of the magnetic properties of serpentinized peridotites reflects the complexity of magnetization acquired during serpentinization. Serpentinized peridotites may contribute to magnetic anomalies in forearc regions.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 134 (Vanuatu), geological high sensitivity magnetic tools (GHMT) developed by CEA-LETI and TOTAL were used at two drill sites. GHMT combine two sensors, a proton magnetometer for total magnetic field measurements with an operational accuracy of 0.1 nanoteslas (nT), and a highly sensitive induction tool to measure the magnetic susceptibility with an operational accuracy of a few 10**-6 SI units. Hole 829A was drilled through an accretionary prism and the downhole measurements of susceptibility correlate well with other well-log physical properties. Sharp susceptibility contrasts between chalk and volcanic silt sediment provide complementary data that help define the lithostratigraphic units. At Hole 831B magnetic susceptibility and total field measurements were performed through a 700-m reef carbonate sequence of a guyot deposited on top of an andesitic volcano. The downhole magnetic susceptibility is very low and the amplitude of peak-to-peak anomalies is less than a few 10**-5 SI units. Based on the repeatability of the measurements, the accuracy of the magnetic logging measurements was demonstrated to be excellent. Total magnetic field data at Hole 831B reveal low magnetic anomalies of 0.5 to 5 nT and the measurement of a complete repeat section indicates an accuracy of 0.1 to 0.2 nT. Due to the inclination of the earth's magnetic field in this area (~-40°) and the very low magnetic susceptibility of the carbonate, the contribution of the induced magnetization to the total field measured in the hole is negligible. Unfortunately, because the core recovery was extremely poor (<5%) no detailed comparison between the core measurements and the downhole magnetic data could be made. Most samples have a diamagnetic susceptibility and very low intensity of remanent magnetization (< 10**-4 A/m), but a few samples have a stable remanent magnetization up to 0.005 A/m. These variations of the intensity of the remanent magnetization suggest a very heterogeneous distribution of the magnetization in the carbonate sequence that could explain the magnetic field anomalies measured in these weakly magnetized rocks.

The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of ocean basalts, giving rise to the pattern of marine magnetic anomalies, is known to be of comparatively low intensity for about 20 Ma old oceanic crust. The aim of this study is to detect possible peculiarities in the rock magnetic properties of ocean basalts of this age, and to establish a link between magnetomineralogy, rock magnetic parameters, and the low NRM intensity. Ocean basalts covering ages from 0.7 to 135 Ma were selected for rock magnetic experiments and their room temperature hysteresis parameters, Curie temperature and temperature dependence of saturation magnetization MS(T) was determined and complemented by reflected light microscopy. The majority of samples is magnetically dominated by titanomagnetite and titanomaghemite with increasing oxidation state with age. For these, a strong dependence of hysteresis parameters on the age of the samples is found. The samples have a minimum in saturation magnetization and a maximum in magnetic stability in the age interval ranging from approximately 10 to 40 Ma, coinciding with the age interval of low NRM intensity. The observed change in saturation magnetization is in the same order as that for the NRM intensity. A further peculiarity of the titanomaghemites from this age interval is the shape of their MS(T) curves, which display a maximum above room temperature (Neel P-type) and, sometimes, a self-reversal of magnetization below room temperature (Neel N-type). These special rock magnetic properties can be explained by titanomagnetite low-temperature oxidation and highly oxidized titanomaghemites in the age interval 10-40 Ma. A corresponding measurement of the NRM at elevated temperature allows to identify a maximum in NRM intensity above room temperature for the samples in that age interval. This provides evidence that the NRM is equally carried by titanomaghemites and that the low NRM intensities for about 20 Ma old ocean basalts are caused consequently by the low saturation magnetization of these titanomaghemites.

The deep sea sedimentary record is an archive of the pre-glacial to glacial development of Antarctica and changes in climate, tectonics and ocean circulation. Identification of the pre-glacial, transitional and full glacial components in the sedimentary record is necessary for ice sheet reconstruction and to build circum-Antarctic sediment thickness grids for past topography and bathymetry reconstructions, which constrain paleoclimate models. A ~3300 km long Weddell Sea to Scotia Sea transect consisting of multichannel seismic reflection data from various organisations, were used to interpret new horizons to define the initial basin-wide seismostratigraphy and to identify the pre-glacial to glacial components. We mapped seven main units of which three are in the inferred Cretaceous-Paleocene pre-glacial regime, one in the Eocene-Oligocene transitional regime and three units in the Miocene-Pleistocene full glacial climate regime. Sparse borehole data from ODP leg 113 and SHALDRIL constrain the ages of the upper three units. Compiled seafloor spreading magnetic anomalies constrain the basement ages and the hypothetical age model. In many cases, the new horizons and stratigraphy contradict the interpretations in local studies. Each seismic sedimentary unit and its associated base horizon are continuous and traceable for the entire transect length, but reflect a lateral change in age whilst representing the same deposition process. The up to 1240 m thick pre-glacial seismic units form a mound in the central Weddell Sea basin and, in conjunction with the eroded flank geometry, support the interpretation of a Cretaceous proto-Weddell Gyre. The base reflector of the transitional seismic unit, which marks the initial ice sheet advances to the outer shelf, has a lateral model age of 26.6-15.5 Ma from southeast to northwest. The Pliocene-Pleistocene glacial deposits reveals lower sedimentations rates, indicating a reduced sediment supply. Sedimentation rates for the pre-glacial, transitional and full glacial components are highest around the Antarctic Peninsula, indicating higher erosion and sediment supply of a younger basement. We interpret an Eocene East Antarctic Ice Sheet expansion, Oligocene grounding of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and Early Miocene grounding of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet.

Magnetic theory and application to a complex volcanic area located in Southern Italy are here discussed showing the example of the Gulf of Naples, located at Southern Italy Tyrrhenian margin. A magnetic anomaly map of the Gulf of Naples has been constructed aimed at highlighting new knowledge on geophysics and volcanology of this area of the Eastern Tyrrhenian margin, characterized by a complex geophysical setting, strongly depending on sea bottom topography. The theoretical aspects of marine magnetometry and multibeam bathymetry have been discussed. Magnetic data processing included the correction of the data for the diurnal variation, the correction of the data for the offset and the leveling of the data as a function of the correction at the cross-points of the navigation lines. Multibeam and single-beam bathymetric data processing has been considered. Magnetic anomaly fields in the Naples Bay have been discussed through a detailed geological interpretation and correlated with main morpho-structural features recognized through morphobathymetric interpretation. Details of magnetic anomalies have been selected, represented and correlated with significant seismic profiles, recorded on the same navigation lines of magnetometry. They include the continental shelf offshore the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, the outer shelf of the Gulf of Pozzuoli offshore the Phlegrean Fields volcanic complex, the relict volcanic banks of Pentapalummo, Nisida and Miseno, the Gaia volcanic bank on the Naples slope, the western slope of the Dohrn canyon, the Magnaghi canyon’s head and the magnetic anomalies among the Ischia and Procida islands.
