The ability to reactivate, stabilize and increase the lifetime of gold catalysts by dispersing large, inactive gold nanoparticles to smaller nanoparticles provides an opportunity to make gold catalysts more practical for industrial applications. Previously it has been demonstrated that mild treatment with iodomethane (CH3I) (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2009, 131, 6973; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2011, 50, 8912) was able to re-disperse gold on carbon and metal oxide supports. In the current work, we show that this technique can be applied to re-disperse gold on a ‘mixed’ metal oxide, namely a mechanical mixture of ceria, zirconia and titania. Characterization was conducted to gage the impact of the iodomethane (CH3I) treatment on a previously sintered catalyst.

Barium zirconium titanate (BZT) ceramics were prepared by mixed oxide method. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of a single phase while Raman scattering confirmed structural transitions as a function of different Zr/Ti ratio. The addition of Zr strongly influenced the crystal structure and electrical properties of the ceramics. A typical hysteresis loops were observed for all investigated compositions. BZT ceramics with 15 mol% Zr have shown a ferroelectric to paraelectric transition at around 77 degrees C. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Vanadium modified barium zirconium titanate ceramics Ba(Zr(0.10)Ti(0.90))O(3):2V (BZT:2V) were prepared from the mixed oxide method. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, addition of vanadium leads to ceramics free of secondary phases. Electrical characteristics reveal a dielectric permittivity at around 15,000 with low dielectric loss with a remnant polarization (P(r))of 8 mu C/cm(2) at 2 kV/cm. From the obtained results, we assume that vanadium substitution in the BZT lattice affects dielectric characteristics due to the electron-relaxation-mode in which carriers (polarons, protons, and so on) are coupled with existing dielectric modes. Ferroelectric layefed-perovskite BaBi2Ta2O9 (BBT) has been prepared successfully by solid-state reaction. The influence of pressure and temperature/time annealing regime on the BBT phase formation was analyzed. The powders were characterized by thermal analysis and Xray diffraction and the sintered pellets by scanning electron microscopy. The crystalline BBT phase, free of secondary phases was obtained at 950 degreesC for 2 h. For an applied field strength of 380 kV/cm, a remnant polarization of 7.6 muC/cm(2) and an electric coercive field of 45.7 kV/cm were obtained. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mixed oxide compounds, such as TiO2-SnO2 system are widely used as gas sensors and should also provide varistor properties modifying the TiO2 surface. Therefore, a theoretical investigation has been carried out characterizing the effect of SnO2 on TiO2 addition on the electronic structure by means of ab initio SCF-LCAO calculations using all electrons. In order to take into account the finite size of the cluster, we have used the point charge model for the (TiO2)(15) cluster to study the effect on electronic structure of doping the TiO2 (110) Surface. The contracted basis set for titanium (4322/42/3), oxygen (33/3) and tin (43333/4333/43) atoms were used. The charge distributions, dipole moments, and density of states of doping TiO2 and vacancy formation are reported and analysed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrical response of Ba(Ti0.90Zr0.10)O3 (BZT) ceramics obtained by the mixed oxide method as a functionof tungsten content was investigated. According to X-ray diffraction analysis the single phase BZT1W (1wt.% W doped BZT) and BZT2W (2 wt.% W doped BZT) ceramics, crystallized in a perovskite structure, wereobtained. It is also shown that tungsten substituted ceramics can be sintered at a reduced temperature whencompared to the undoped BZT. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses reveals that substitution ofTi4+ by W6+ causes distortion in the crystal structure changing lattice parameter. Substitution of W6+ on B-siteof ABO3 perovskite BZT ceramics shifted the phase transition to lower temperatures up to a tungsten contentof 2 wt.% leading to a relaxor-like behaviour. Keywords: donor dopant; ceramics; dielectric response; mixed oxide method

Vanadium/titanium mixed oxide films were produced using the sol-gel route. The structural investigation revealed that increased TiO2 molar ratio in the mixed oxide disturbs the V2O5 crystalline structure and makes it amorphous. This blocks the TiO2 phase transformation, so TiO2 stabilizes in the anatase phase. In addition the surface of the sample always presents larger amounts of TiO2 than expected, revealing a concentration gradient along the growth direction. For increased TiO2 molar ratios the roughness of the surface is reduced. Ion sensors were fabricated using the extended gate field effect transistor configuration. The obtained sensitivities varied in the range of 58 mV/pH down to 15 mV/pH according to the composition and morphology of the surface of the samples. Low TiO2 amounts presented better sensing properties that might be related to the cracked and inhomogeneous surfaces. Rising the TiO2 quantity in the films produces homogeneous surfaces but diminishes their sensitivities. Thus, the present paper reveals that the compositional and structural aspects change the surface morphology and electrical properties accounting for the final ion sensing properties of the V2O5/TiO2 films. A simple and efficient route to prepare supported nanocrystalline oxides is presented. The synthesis procedure, i.e. in situ autocombustion of a glycine complex, allows the production of nanocrystals in a porous matrix presenting larger pore size. An example of successful formation of 2-5 nm nanocrystals is given for a single oxide (Fe2O3), a mixed-oxide structure (LaCoO3 perovskite-type) and a nickel-doped oxide. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

A Ce0.5Pr0.5O2 mixed oxide has been prepared with the highest surface area and smallest particle size ever reported (125 m2/g and 7 nm, respectively), also being the most active diesel soot combustion catalyst ever tested under realistic conditions if catalysts forming highly volatile species are ruled out. This Ce–Pr mixed oxide is even more active than a reference platinum-based commercial catalyst. This study provides an example of the efficient participation of oxygen species released by a ceria catalyst in a heterogeneous catalysis reaction where both the catalyst and one of the reactants (soot) are solids. It has been concluded that both the ceria-based catalyst composition (nature and amount of dopant) and the particle size play key roles in the combustion of soot through the active oxygen-based mechanism. The composition determines the production of active oxygen and the particle size the transfer of such active oxygen species from catalyst to soot.

Ce0.64Zr0.27Nd0.09Oδ mixed oxides have been prepared by three different methods (nitrates calcination, coprecipitation and microemulsion), characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, H2-TPR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS, and tested for soot combustion in NOx/O2. The catalyst prepared by microemulsion method is the most active one, which is related to its high surface area (147 m2/g) and low crystallite size (6 nm), and the lowest activity was obtained with the catalyst prepared by coprecipitation (74 m2/g; 9 nm). The catalyst prepared by nitrates precursors calcination is slightly less active to that prepared by microemulsion, but the synthesis procedure is very straightforward and surfactants or other chemicals are not required, being very convenient for scaling up and practical utilization. The high activity of the catalyst prepared by nitrates calcination can be attributed to the better introduction of Nd cations into the parent ceria framework than on catalysts prepared by coprecipitation and microemulsion, which promotes the creation of more oxygen vacancies.

Tetragonal ZrO(2), synthesized by solution combustion technique, was found to be photocatalytically active for the degradation of anionic dyes. The compound was characterized by FT-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, BET surface area analysis, and zero point charge pH measurement. A high concentration of surface hydroxyl groups was observed over the catalyst, as confirmed by XPS and FUR. The photocatalytic degradation of orange G, amido black, remazol brilliant blue R, and alizarin cyanine green (ACG) was carried out with this material. The effect of pH, inorganic. salts, and H(2)O(2) on the activity of the catalyst was also studied, and it was found that the catalyst maintained its activity at a wide range of pH and in the presence of inorganic salts. Having established that ZrO(2) was photocatalytically active, mixed oxide catalysts of TiO(2)-ZrO(2) were also tested for the photocatalytic degradation of ACG, and the 50% ZrO(2)-TiO(2) mixed oxides showed activity that was comparable to the activity of TiO(2).
