3.5 The Missouri State Supreme Court Conferred a Honorary Law License for Lloyd Gaines.

On September 28th, 2006, the Missouri State Supreme Court conferred a posthumous law license for Mr. Gaines.

2.6 Lloyd Lionel Gaines, Lincoln University Junior Class Portrait, 1933-34

When the summer of 1935 rolled around, Gaines was contemplating his next step. He was graduating in August, with honors no less, and he was pondering a career. After graduation, he filed papers with placement office at Lincoln but he could not find an immediate position. Although he minored in education, Gaines was not primarily searching for a teaching position.

3.2 Lloyd L. Gaines/Marian O'Fallon Oldham Black Culture Center at University of Missouri

Lloyd Gaines’ memory has been honored most notably by the University of Missouri. In 1995, a law scholarship in his name was established at the institution. Also, in 2001, MU opened the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture at MU which shares his name.

On May 13, 2006, University of Missouri awarded Lloyd Gaines Doctor of Law degree.

1.4 Gaines Family Home at 3932 Weest Belle Place, St. Louis, Missouri

Following the death of Lloyd's father, his family, the size of which is reported to be anywhere from five to 11 siblings, moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1926, settling in the city's Central West End neighborhood.

1.6 Lloyd Hogsett, University of Missouri Legal Counsel

By March, 1936, the University of Missouri formally rejected Gaines because Missouri law would not permit a person of African descent to enter a white school. Within three weeks, the NAACP petitioned the court asking the University of Missouri to open its doors to Gaines on the grounds that it was the only public law school in Missouri.

3.7 Chief Justice Hughes Delivered the Opinion of the Court for Gaines vs. Canada Case

Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes announced the 6-2 decision on Gaines v Canada on December 12, 1938. Writing for the majority, Hughes held that when the state provides legal training, it must provide it to every qualified person; it cannot send them to other states. Key to the conclusion was that there was no provision for legal education of blacks in Missouri, which is where Missouri law guaranteeing equal protection applies. To the court, sending Gaines to another state would have been irrelevant.

After weeks of debate Taylor’s proposal, House Bill No. 195 was passed and signed by Governor Lloyd Stark.

2.1 Lincoln University Campus, 1930s

In the fall of 1932, Lloyd Gaines enrolled at Lincoln University in Jefferson City Missouri. Away from his family for the first time, Lloyd began to expand his horizons.

Lloyd's background in history led him to an interest in the law and unbeknownst to anyone, save his mentor, Lorenzo Greene, he was preparing to what no American-American had done before. Lloyd Gaines was going to enroll in the University Missouri School of Law.

Gaines studied History and Education at Lincoln and was frequently seen in Memorial Hall chatting with his mentors in the History Department, Drs. W. Sherman Savage and Lorenzo Greene about his future after graduation.
