The lithostratigraphic units (2 groups, 5 formations and 4 members) of the Tertiary of the Miranda do Corvo-Viseu region (Central Portugal) are here described. For each unit the characterization and description (boundaries, diagnostic properties and atributes) were included. The stratigraphic, lithological, sequential and tectonic data allow correlations with other units of the same Tertiary basin located more to west and support the chronostratigraphic attribution. Sedimentologic characteristics of the deposits lead to the interpretation of the influence of tectonism, climate and eustasy during the sedimentary evolution of this Basin.

An exceptional, tectonically remarkably unaffected, nearly 200 m-thick continuous section of hemipelagic and turbiditic sediments, covering most of the Triassic is described from the Batain Complex of north-eastern Oman. According to conodont and radiolarian data the sequence spans the late Scythian to the early Norian, a time period of nearly 30 M. Coupled with a high resolution stratigraphy, the lithostratigraphy, sedimentology, as well as sequence and isotope stratigraphy of the section are documented. For the Triassic of the Batain Plain we propose the new name Sal Formation, which replaces the formerly used Matbat Formation, and subdivide it into three new members. The Sal Formation was deposited on the proximal continental margin of northeastern Arabia and records various depositional environments. The lower member is interpreted as the distal part of a homoclinal ramp which evolves to a distally steepened ramp during time of deposition of the middle member. The upper member displays a toe of slope position which is indicated by an increase of proximal turbidites. These sediments form part of a segment of the Neo-Tethyan embayment between Arabia and India. The stratigraphic analysis indicates highly varying sedimentation rates from a minimum of 2 m/M gamma around the Anisian/Ladinian boundary up to 15 m/M gamma during the Lower and Upper Triassic. Sequence-stratigraphically, the Sal section is subdivided into six third order cycles which are biochronologically well integrated into the global Triassic cycle chart. The mixed siliciclastic-calcareous upper member of the Sal Formation typically shows highstand related carbonate shedding. It is, therefore, an important test case for sequence-stratigraphic controlled carbonate export to mixed basin fills. The well developed sequence stratigraphic cycles are mirrored in the isotope patterns. Additionally, the carbon and oxygen isotope data from the Sal Formation record the same chemostratigraphic marker at the Spathian/Anisian boundary known from other Tethyan sections.

In the southeastern Ebro Foreland Basin, the marine deposits of Lutetian and Bartonian age show excellent outcrop conditions, with a great lateral and horizontal continuity of lithostratigraphic units. In addition, the rich fossil record -mainly larger foraminifers-, provides biostratigraphic data of regional relevance for the whole Paleogene Pyrenean Basin, that can be used for the Middle Eocene biocorrelation of the western Tethys. This contribution is a sedimentary and biostratigraphic synthesis of the basic outcrops and sections of the Lutetian andBartonian marine and transitional deposits in the southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin.

The stratigraphic basis of this work has allowed the use of larger foraminifers in the biostratigraphic characterisation of the new Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZ). This part of the volume presents a description of the sedimentary cycles formed by the transgressive-regressive systems of the Lutetian and Bartonian in the southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin. Concerning the Lutetian deposits studied in the Amer-Vic and Empordà areas, four sedimentary cycles have been characterised. The first and second are found within the Tavertet/Girona Limestone Formation (Reguant, 1967; Pallí, 1972), while the third and fourth cycles cover the Coll de Malla Marl Formation (Clavell et al., 1970), the Bracons Formation (Gich, 1969, 1972), the Banyoles Marl Formation (Almela and Ríos, 1943), and the Bellmunt Formation (Gich, 1969, 1972). In the Bartonian deposits studied in the Igualada area, two transgressive-regressive sedimentary cycles have been characterised in the Collbàs Formation (Ferrer, 1971), the Igualada Formation (Ferrer, 1971), and the Tossa Formation (Ferrer, 1971). The Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZs) recognised within the Lutetian are the following: SBZ 13, from the Early Lutetian, in the transgressive system of the first cycle; SBZ 14, from the Middle Lutetian, in the second cycle and the lower part of the transgressive system of the third cycle; SBZ 15, from the Middle Lutetian, in the remaining parts of the third system; SBZ 16, from the Late Lutetian, throughout the fourth cycle. The association of larger foraminifers in the first and second cycles of the Bartonian in the Igualada area has been used as the basis for the definition of SBZs 17 and 18 recognised in the Bartonian of the western Tethys.

The carbon isotopic signature of carbonates depends on secular variations of organic carbon and carbonate carbon production/burial rates. A decrease in carbonate productivity makes the organic/carbonate carbon ratio unstable up to the point that even minor variations in the organic carbon reservoirs can provoke carbon isotopic shifts. The delta(13)C positive shifts of the middle Carixian (early Pliensbachian) and the early Bajocian recorded in the Umbria-Marche-Sabina domain represent a good example of this mechanism. Both sedimentology and lithostratigraphy of pelagic platform-basin carbonate systems in this area show that important changes in the source of carbonates correspond to the observed isotopic shifts. The middle Carixian event is in fact well correlatable to the drastic reduction of benthic carbonate production on rift-related intrabasinal highs, which then became pelagic carbonate platforms. The early Bajocian event is concomitant with the beginning of a long hiatus on the pelagic carbonate platforms and with a drop of the biodiversity of calcareous organisms followed by the onset of biosiliceous sedimentation in basins. ABSTRACT: The Late Oligocene first occurrence of Miogypsina gunteri Cole and Miogypsina tani Drooger is verified in the light of larger foraminiferal assemblages from Nosara (Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica) and Windward (Carriacou, Grenada, Lesser Antilles). At Windward, they co-occur with planktonic foraminifera and nannofossils studied by earlier workers. 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios were measured in calcite of larger foraminifera at both sites to determine independent absolute ages of the two outcrops. Late Oligocene shallow water formations unconformably overlie Paleocene-Eocene distal turbidites and siliceous shales in the outcrops in Costa Rica. The shallow-water lithostratigraphy includes near shore volcanic sandstones that alternate with sandy bioclastic limestones. The latter have yielded rich assemblages of larger foraminifera that have been studied in oriented sections, SEM for split material and polished rock thin sections for transmitted light and cathodoluminescence (CL) observation. The association of larger foraminifera includes Heterostegina antillea Cushman, Miogypsina tani Drooger, Miogypsina gunteri Cole, Miogypsina c.f (Miolepidocyclina) panamensis (Cushman), Miogypsina sp., Lepidocyclina (nephrolepidina) vaughani Cushman, Lepidocyclina yurnagurensis Cushman, Lepidocyclina undosa Cushman. At Windward, scattered outcrops of the Belvedere Formation expose mass flow deposits rich in larger foraminifera associated with an early late Oligocene (NP24) planktonic foraminifa assemblage. Planktonic foraminifera and nanno-fossils recovered in rocks slightly downsection indicate an upper Middle Oligocene age. Larger foraminifera species collected just north of Windward include Lepidocyclina undosa Cushman and Miogypsina gunteri Cole. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio was measured in 11 specimens of megalosphaeric Lepidocyclina spp., mechanically extracted from 2 rock samples collected at Punta Peladas (Costa Rica) Ratios range from 0.709088 to 0.708196, which correspond to a model age of 27.4 to 24.94 Ma. Very similar ratios, ranging from 0.708150 to 0.708167 were obtained from Windward Village (Carriacou). All measured 87Sr/86Sr ratios fall within a Chattian (Late Oligocene) age. Nannofossils, planktonic foraminifera and identical 87Sr/86Sr ratios from Punta Peladas and Windward clearly indicate a Chattian (Upper Oligocene) first occurrence of Miogypsina gunteri and Miogypsina tani and confirm this age range for the other larger foraminifera cited above. The first occurrence of Miogypsina gunteri in the lower Athe upper Aquitanian as proposed by European workers cannot be confirmed.

Summary This study investigates the overturned limb of the Siviez-Mischabel nappe and underlying tectonic units (Upper Stalden zone and Houillère zone) in the Mattertal area. Detailed structural analysis in the Permian Randa granite (augen orthogneiss) allows a better understanding of the Alpine deformation effects on basement rocks. Detailed mapping of this orthogneiss and surrounding rocks, and the study of the lithostratigraphy in the related sedimentary horizons allow the proposition of a structural and kinematic model for the overturned limb of the Siviez-Mischabel and to better understand the relations with the underlying tectonic units. The structural analysis of the Randa orthogneiss and surrounding rocks revealed the superposition of several phases of ductile deformation. This orthogneiss formed under greenschist facies metamorphic conditions displays a strong Alpine foliation with at least two stretching lineations. The first lineation, L1, is oriented NW-SE and is related to the nappe emplacement northward. The second one, L2, is related to the Simplon ductile shear zone. Strain estimation using the Fry method has been performed on porphyritic facies of the Randa orthogneiss. The obtained ellipses have axial ratios varying between 1.9 and 5.3, in agreement with strain estimation obtained from other markers (stretched turmalines, fringes). The strain values are very similar if measured parallel to L1 or to L2. A theoretical approach was necessary to verify the relevant application of the Fry method to augen orthogneiss. This method requires that the distribution of the used markers has to be homogeneous and isotropic. Statistical tests have been done and revealed that K-feldspar phenocrysts satisfy these conditions and can be used as strain markers with the Fry method. The obtained strain measurements revealed the importance of the Simplon ductile shear zone on the geometry of the nappe in the studied area. Mapping has improved the lithostratigraphy at the base of the Siviez-Mischabel nappe. Three overturned formations can be observed below the gneisses forming the core of the nappe. These three formations form the St-Niklaus syncline, which connects the Siviez-Mischabel nappe to the underlying Upper Stalden zone. U-Pb dating of detrital and magmatic zircons by LA-ICPMS allowed the age of the observed formations to be constrained (presumably Carboniferous to Early Triassic). This data has critical implications for nappe structure in the region, composed of few recumbent folds with well preserved normal and overturned limbs. The definition and dating of these formations, as well as their identification in the adjacent "Houillère Zone" improve the understanding of the geometry and tectonic relations of the Middle Penninic nappes in the Mattertal.
