The aim of the present thesis was to identify management factors that affect the extent of exploratory behaviour (ground pecking, scratching) as well as quantitative and qualitative as-pects of dust-bathing behaviour in laying hens kept in commercial furnished cages (‘small group housing’) and aviaries. Based on the results, it should be considered which management measures can be recommended for farmers to enhance hen welfare. The feasibility of direct observations of dust-bathing behaviour as well as video observations of exploratory and dust-bathing behaviour was tested in two aviaries. The direct observations were judged to be unfeasible under the conditions encountered. For the analysis of the video recordings, different sampling intervals for instantaneous scan sampling, different extents of observation time, and intra- and inter-observer reliabilities were compared and the most ap-propriate observation scheme selected. Applying the selected scheme (observing the first 16 minutes of every hour distributed over two consecutive light days with a sample interval of two minutes), within the range of environmental conditions found in 22 aviaries, pecking, scratching and dust-bathing behaviour was performed on average 25, 2 and 7 % of the obser-vation time. Hen numbers in the litter were positively associated with stocking density and group size. More scratching was performed with increasing litter height as well as in humid litter. If no litter had been provided, thus substrate consisted of dust and faeces, a reduced proportion of dust-bathing was found. The same method was then used in 16 furnished cage systems. On average 12 % of the total hen number were found on the scratching mats. The hens spent 8 % of the observed time pecking at the mat, 4 % dust-bathing and 0.4 % scratch-ing. Higher proportions were found on the mats and more dust-bathing behaviour occurred, if substrate was provided. Also with increasing light intensity and stocking density more hens were observed on the mats. More pecking and scratching occurred in conditions of higher stocking density, probably due to social facilitation, and of increased mat area per hen. With increasing mat numbers per cage less pecking was observed. Wider mats led to increased dust-bathing behaviour. Finally, 129 dust-baths recorded in 17 aviaries were analysed in detail. On average they lasted 17 minutes, with the tossing phase taking 69 % of this time, including on average 2 vertical wing shakes and 3 scratches with one leg per minute tossing phase. Dust-bath duration de-creased with increasing litter height. Litter type influenced all recorded parameters: dust-bath duration was highest on straw and lowest on fine material and fine material mixed with straw, where on both also the proportion of the tossing phase was lowest. The number of vertical wing shakes during the dust-bath was highest on straw and lowest on fine material mixed with straw as against the frequency of vertical wing shaking that was lowest on straw and highest on fine material. If dust-bathing hens were disturbed twice or more, dust-bathing duration decreased. With increasing light intensity a decreased proportion of the tossing phase as well as a reduced number of vertical wing shakes were recorded. Possibly the light stimulated the hens to dust-bath more often with less tossing behaviour per performance. The observed variation of the dust-bathing parameters could reflect successful adaptation or frustration of the hens. The litter and light conditions on the investigated farms were predominantly restrictive in terms of stimulation of exploration and dust-bathing behaviour. Thus, it was only possible to analyse possible associations between these factors and exploration and dust-bathing behav-iour within the range found. Based on the results the following management recommendations can be given: To allow hens in furnished cages more normal activity, substrate availability should be improved and mat space and light intensity increased. With regard to aviaries as well litter availability should be improved. Litter height should not be too low. Disturbances during dust-bathing should be prevented, but no influencing factors could be identified.

Antimicrobial resistance is an emerging concern to public health, and food-producing animals are known to be a potential source for transmission of resistant bacteria to humans. As legislation of the European Union requires to ban conventional cages for the housing of laying hens on the one hand, and a high food safety standard for eggs on the other hand, further investigations about the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in alternative housing types are required. In this study, we determined antimicrobial resistance in indicator bacteria from 396 cloacal swabs from 99 Swiss laying hen farms among four alternative housing types during a cross-sectional study. On each farm, four hens were sampled and exposure to potential risk factors was identified with a questionnaire. The minimal inhibitory concentration was determined using broth microdilution in Escherichia coli (n=371) for 18 antimicrobials and in Enterococcus faecalis (n=138) and Enterococcus faecium (n=153) for 16 antimicrobials. All antimicrobial classes recommended by the European Food Safety Authority for E. coli and enterococci were included in the resistance profile. Sixty per cent of the E. coli isolates were susceptible to all of the considered antimicrobials and 30% were resistant to at least two antimicrobials. In E. faecalis, 33% of the strains were susceptible to all tested antimicrobials and 40% were resistant to two or more antimicrobials, whereas in E. faecium these figures were 14% and 39% respectively. Risk factor analyses were carried out for bacteria species and antimicrobials with a prevalence of resistance between 15% and 85%. In these analyses, none of the considered housing and management factors showed a consistent association with the prevalence of resistance for more than two combinations of bacteria and antimicrobial. Therefore we conclude that the impact of the considered housing and management practices on the egg producing farms on resistance in laying hens is low.

Low rates of nest acceptance by laying hens are a major problem in commercial poultry farming operations with aviary systems, leading to costly manual collection and cleaning of mislaid eggs. To gain knowledge about factors affecting nest use, laying hens' preferences for different nest locations were tested. Nests are normally installed at one of two sites: against a wall of the hen house or integrated into one tier of the aviary rack The preferences of laying hens for different nest sites have never been examined under commercial conditions. The aim of this study is to investigate whether behavioural differences can be detected between the different nest sites. The study consists of two consecutive trials involving 5027 Lohmann Selected Leghorn hens (LSL) and 601 layer hybrids selected for extensive housing conditions (EXT). The hens were randomly assigned to eight compartments per trial in groups of 355-360 LSL or 300 EXT in a laying hen house. Four compartments were equipped with a Volito Voletage (R) aviary system (VV), and four were equipped with a Rihs Bolegell (R) aviary system (RB), both of which contained either integrated or wall-placed nests when the experiments started. A strongly balanced crossover design with four periods was used. At 36, 44 and 52 weeks of age, the nest site in four out of the eight compartments was switched. Before each change, the fronts of half of the nests were videotaped during the light period, and the behaviour throughout the main laying period was analysed. Furthermore, the numbers of nest eggs and mislaid eggs in each compartment were recorded every day. No differences in the number of mislaid eggs between the two nest sites could be detected, except at the age of 20/21 weeks when hens in VV aviaries mislaid more eggs when nests were integrated (P = 0.0012). More hens stood simultaneously in front of the integrated nests than in front of wall-placed nests (P = 0.015). Activity of the laying hens increased (P = 0.0073), and stationary behavioural patterns declined (P = 0.0093), when the nests were placed by the wall. Hens inspected integrated nests for a longer duration than wall-placed nests, but wall-placed nests were visited more frequently. In addition to the nest site, the width of the platform in front of the nest influenced laying hen behaviour. Compared with narrower platforms, balance movements decreased on wider ones. Additionally, the platform design had to be taken into account as well, given that hens could not stand or walk as securely on wooden slats as on a grid floor. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. In studies assessing outdoor range use of laying hens, the number of hens seen on outdoor ranges is inversely correlated to flock size. The aim of this study was to assess individual ranging behavior on a covered (veranda) and an uncovered outdoor run (free-range) in laying hen flocks varying in size. Five to ten percent of hens (aged 9–15 months) within 4 small (2–2500 hens), 4 medium (5–6000), and 4 large (≥9000) commercial flocks were fitted with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. Antennas were placed at both sides of all popholes between the house and the veranda and the veranda and the free-range. Ranging behavior was directly monitored for approximately three weeks in combination with hourly photographs of the free-range for the distribution of hens and 6h long video recordings on two parts of the free-range during two days. Between 79 and 99% of the tagged hens were registered on the veranda at least once and between 47 and 90% were registered on the free-range at least once. There was no association between the percentage of hens registered outside the house (veranda or free-range) and flock size. However, individual hens in small and medium sized flocks visited the areas outside the house more frequently and spent more time there than hens from large flocks. Foraging behavior on the free-range was shown more frequently and for a longer duration by hens from small and medium sized flocks than by hens from large flocks. This difference in ranging behavior could account for the negative relationship between flock size and the number of hens seen outside at one point of time. In conclusion, our work describes individual birds’ use of areas outside the house within large scale commercial egg production.

Keel bone damage (KBD) is a critical issue facing the contemporary laying hen industry due to the likely pain leading to compromised welfare and reduced productivity. Recent reports suggest that KBD, while highly variable and likely dependent on a host of factors, extends to all housing systems (including traditional battery cages, furnished cages and non-cage systems), genetic lines, and management styles. Despite the extent of the problem, the research community remains uncertain as to the causes and influencing factors of KBD. To combat these issues, the current review was produced following discussions from the 1st International Keel Bone Damage Workshop held in Switzerland in April 2014. This exercise sought to assess current knowledge, foster novel collaborations, propose unique methodologies and highlight the key areas where innovative research is needed. The following paper is based on the content of those discussions and presents nine recommendations for future research efforts.

Non-cage housing systems for laying hens such as aviaries provide greater freedom to perform species-specific behavior and thus are thought to improve welfare of the birds; however, aviaries are associated with a high prevalence of keel bone damage (fractures and deviations), which is a major welfare problem in commercial laying hens. Potential causes of keel bone damage are falls and collisions with internal housing structures that occur as birds move between tiers or perches in the aviary. The aim of this study was to investigate the scope for reducing keel bone damage by reducing falls and collisions through modifications of aviary design. Birds were kept in 20 pens in a laying hen house (225 hens per pen) that were assigned to four different treatments (n = 5 pens per treatment group) including (1) control pens and pens modified by the addition of (2) perches, (3) platforms and (4) ramps. Video recordings at 19, 22, 29, 36 and 43 weeks of age were used to analyze controlled movements and falls (including details on occurrence of collision, cause of fall, height of fall and behavior after fall) during the transitional dusk and subsequent dark phase. Palpation assessments (focusing on fractures and deviations) using 20 focal hens per pen were conducted at 18, 20, 23, 30, 37, 44, 52 and 60 weeks of age. In comparison to the control group, we found 44% more controlled movements in the ramp (P = 0.003) and 47% more controlled movements in the platform treatments (P = 0.014) as well as 45% fewer falls (P = 0.006) and 59% fewer collisions (P < 0.001) in the ramp treatment. There were no significant differences between the control and perch treatments. Also, at 60 weeks of age, 23% fewer fractured keel bones were found in the ramp compared with the control treatment (P = 0.0053). After slaughter at 66 weeks of age, no difference in keel bone damage was found between treatment groups and the prevalence of fractures increased to an average of 86%. As a potential mechanism to explain the differences in locomotion, we suggest that ramps facilitated movement in the vertical plane by providing a continuous path between the tiers and thus supported more natural behavior (i.e. walking and running) of the birds. As a consequence of reducing events that potentially damage keel bones, the installation of ramps may have reduced the prevalence of keel fractures for a major portion of the flock cycle. We conclude that aviary design and installation of specific internal housing structures (i.e. ramps and platforms) have considerable potential to reduce keel bone damage of laying hens in aviary systems.

Keel fractures in the laying hen are the most critical animal welfare issue facing the egg production industry, particularly with the increased use of extensive systems in response to the 2012 EU directive banning conventional battery cages. The current study is aimed at assessing the effects of 2 omega-3 (n3) enhanced diets on bone health, production endpoints, and behavior in free-range laying hens. Data was collected from 2 experiments over 2 laying cycles, each of which compared a (n3) supplemented diet with a control diet. Experiment 1 employed a diet supplemented with a 60:40 fish oil-linseed mixture (n3:n6 to 1.35) compared with a control diet (n3:n6 to 0.11), whereas the n3 diet in Experiment 2 was supplemented with a 40:60 fish oil-linseed (n3:n6 to 0.77) compared to the control diet (n3:n6 to 0.11). The n3 enhanced diet of Experiment 1 had a higher n3:n6 ratio, and a greater proportion of n3 in the long chain (C20/22) form (0.41 LC:SC) than that of Experiment 2 (0.12 LC:SC). Although dietary treatment was successful in reducing the frequency of fractures by approximately 27% in Experiment 2, data from Experiment 1 indicated the diet actually induced a greater likelihood of fracture (odds ratio: 1.2) and had substantial production detriment. Reduced keel breakage during Experiment 2 could be related to changes in bone health as n3-supplemented birds demonstrated greater load at failure of the keel, and tibiae and humeri that were more flexible. These results support previous findings that n3-supplemented diets can reduce fracture likely by increasing bone strength, and that this can be achieved without detriment to production. However, our findings suggest diets with excessive quantities of n3, or very high levels of C20/22, may experience health and production detriments. Further research is needed to optimize the quantity and type of n3 in terms of bone health and production variables and investigate the potential associated mechanisms.

Les infections à Salmonella Enteritidis chez les humains sont associées à la consommation d’œufs ou d’ovoproduits contaminés. La vaccination est un outil utilisé pour diminuer les risques d’infection à SE chez la volaille, mais avec des résultats variables. Au Canada deux bactérines, MBL SE4C et Layermune, sont couramment utilisées pour lutter contre SE. Cependant, leur efficacité n’a pas été complètement déterminée chez les poules pondeuses plus âgées. Par ailleurs, la capacité de ces vaccins à prévenir la transmission verticale et horizontale n’a pas encore été étudiée. L’objectif principal de cette étude était d’évaluer l’effet des deux bactérines sur la réponse immunitaire chez les poules pondeuses, de vérifier la protection conférée par ces vaccins contre l’infection expérimentale à SE, et d’identifier des protéines immunogènes afin de développer un vaccin sous-unitaire. Les oiseaux ont été vaccinés avec deux protocoles d’immunisation en cours d’élevage (soit à 12 et 18, ou à 16 semaines d’âge). Le groupe contrôle a été injecté avec la solution saline. Les oiseaux ont été inoculés per os avec 2 x 109 CFU de la souche SE lysotype 4 à 55 ou à 65 semaines d’âge. Les anticorps (IgG et IgA) ont été mesurés à différents temps avec un ELISA maison en utilisant l’antigène entier de SE. La phagocytose, flambée oxydative, les populations des splénocytes B et T ont été analysées en utilisant la cytométrie en flux. Les signes cliniques, l’excrétion fécale, la contamination des jaunes d’œufs et l’invasion des salmonelles dans les organes ont été étudiés pour évaluer l’efficacité de protection. La transmission horizontale a aussi été étudiée en évaluant l’infection à SE chez les oiseaux mis en contact avec les oiseaux inoculés. Les protéines immunogènes ont été identifiées par SDS-PAGE et Western blot à l’aide d’antisérums prélevés suite à la vaccination et/ou à l’infection expérimentale/naturelle, puis caractérisées par la spectrométrie de masse. Le protocole de vaccination avec deux immunisations a généré un niveau élevé de séroconversion à partir de 3 jusqu’à 32-34 semaines post-vaccination par rapport à celui avec une seule immunisation (p < 0.02), mais il n’y avait plus de différence entre les groupes à 54 et 64 semaines d’âge. Il n’y a pas eu de corrélation entre les niveaux d’IgG et les taux d’isolement des salmonelles dans les organes et des jaunes d’œuf. La production des IgA n’a été observée que chez les oiseaux vaccinés avec 2 injections de MBL SE4C (p ≤ 0.04). Après l’infection expérimentale, la production des IgA a été significativement plus élevée aux jours 1 et 7 p.i dans l’oviducte des oiseaux vaccinés (sauf pour le groupe vacciné avec 2 injections de Layermune) par comparaison avec le groupe contrôle (p ≤ 0.03). Seule la bactérine MBL SE4C a eu un effet protecteur contre la contamination des jaunes d’œuf chez les oiseaux infectés. Ce vaccin réduit partiellement en utilisant deux immunisations, le taux d’excrétion fécale des salmonelles chez les oiseaux inoculés et les oiseaux horizontalement infectés (p ≤ 0.02). Cinq des protéines identifiées par la spectrométrie de masse sont considérées comme des protéines potentiellement candidates pour une étude plus approfondie de leur immonogénicité: Lipoamide dehydrogenase, Enolase (2-phosphoglycerate dehydratase) (2-phospho-D-glycerate hydro-lyase), Elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu), Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) et DNA protection during starvation protein. En général, les bactérines ont induit une immunité humorale (IgG et IgA) chez les poules pondeuses. Cette réponse immunitaire a protégé partiellement les oiseaux quant à l’élimination des salmonelles, la contamination des jaunes d’œuf, ainsi que la transmission horizontale. Dans cette étude, la bactérine MBL SE4C (avec deux immunisations) s’est montrée plus efficace pour protéger les oiseaux que la bactérine Layermune. Nos résultats apportent des informations objectives et complémentaires sur le potentiel de deux bactérines pour lutter contre SE chez les poules pondeuses. Étant donné la protection partielle obtenue en utilisant ces vaccins, l’identification des antigènes immunogènes a permis de sélectionner des protéines spécifiques pour l’élaboration éventuelle d’un vaccin plus efficace contre SE chez les volailles.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de dois tipos de bebedouros nipple e taça, utilizados na dessedentação de aves de postura e o incremento da demanda de cloro na água oferecida pelos dois tipos de bebedouros estudados. Foram realizadas as contagens de coliformes totais, coliformes fecais, Escherichia coli, estreptococos fecais e microrganismos mesófilos. Os resultados obtidos figuraram que as amostras de água dos reservatórios, de ambos os bebedouros, apresentaram-se contaminadas microbiologicamente antes de passarem pelos bebedouros. A contaminação por bactérias de poluição fecal foi maior nas amostras colhidas nos bebedouros tipo taça, assim como eles foram responsáveis por um maior acúmulo de matéria orgânica, tendo então uma elevada demanda de cloro e uma maior influência na depreciação da qualidade da água fornecida às aves. Dos dois tipos de bebedouros estudados, o tipo nipple mostrou ser o menos deletério no que concerne à qualidade da água entretanto, independente do tipo de bebedouro utilizado na dessedentação das aves, a desinfecção da água é um ato imprescindível à manutenção de sua qualidade e à eliminação de futuros patógenos.

O objetivo do trabalho foi elaborar um modelo para estimar as exigências de proteína bruta (PB) para poedeiras leves, usando o método fatorial. Para determinar as exigências de proteína bruta (PB) para manutenção foi utilizada a técnica do balanço de nitrogênio. A exigência de proteína bruta para o ganho de peso foi determinada em função do conteúdo de nitrogênio na carcaça e a eficiência de utilização do nitrogênio da dieta. A exigência de PB, para produção de ovos, foi determinada considerando o teor de PB determinado nos ovos e a eficiência de deposição do nitrogênio no ovo. A partir dos valores das exigências para manutenção, para o ganho e produção foi elaborada uma equação para predizer as exigências diárias de PB (g/ ave/ dia) para poedeiras: PB = 1,94. P0,75 + 0,48.G + 0,301.O, em que P = peso corporal (kg), G = ganho de peso diário (g/dia) e O = massa de ovos produzida (g/ave/dia).

Um experimento foi conduzido com o objetivo de verificar o efeito da adição de ácido fumarico às rações de poedeiras comerciais sobre o desempenho produtivo das aves. Duzentos poedeiras da linhagem Lohmann, com 36 semanas de idade, foram submetidas a um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos, cinco repetições e oito aves por parcela. As aves receberam ração basal acrescidas ou não de ácido fumarico. Os tratamentos consistiram em adicionar 0, 0,25, 0,50, 0,75 e 1,00% de ácido fumárico à dieta basal. Os resultados de desempenho e qualidade interna e externa dos ovos, obtidos durante três ciclos de 28 dias, não apontaram diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos. Estes resultados indicaram que o ácido fumárico não teve efeito como potencializador dos nutrientes, não se justificando sua viabilidade de aplicação nos níveis estudados em rações de poedeiras.

O objetivo deste experimento foi determinar o efeito de diferentes níveis de sódio para poedeiras nos períodos de repouso e segundo ciclo de postura. Foram utilizadas 216 poedeiras da linhagem Hy line W-36, pós-muda forçada, com 60 semanas de idade. O delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 3 x 3 (três níveis de sódio no período de repouso x três níveis de sódio no período de postura), totalizando nove tratamentos com três repetições de oito aves cada. Foram avaliadas, em quatro ciclos de 28 dias, as seguintes variáveis: produção e peso dos ovos, consumo de ração, conversão alimentar, massa de ovos, qualidade do albúmen, percentagem de casca, gravidade específica e espessura das cascas. Não foram encontrados efeitos significativos dos níveis de sódio sobre as variáveis estudadas, entretanto, para a espessura de casca, o menor resultado foi obtido com o nível de 0,15% de sódio. Os níveis de sódio de 0,15% no período de repouso e de 0,25% no período de postura foram suficientes para atender às exigências nutricionais de poedeiras no segundo ciclo de postura.
