It has been previously reported that the addition of boron to Ti-6Al-4V results in significant refinement of the as-cast microstructure and enhancement in the strain hardening. However, the mechanism for the latter effect has not been adequately studied. The aim of this study was to understand the reasons for the enhancement in room temperature strain hardening on addition of boron to as cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy. A study was conducted on slip transmission using SEM, TEM, optical profilometry and four point probe resistivity measurements on un-deformed and deformed samples of Ti-6Al-4V-xB with five levels of boron. Optical profilometry was used to quantify the magnitude of offsets on slip traces which in turn provided information about the extent of planar or multiple slip. Studies on deformed samples reveal that while lath boundaries appear to easily permit dislocation slip transmission, colony boundaries are potent barriers to slip. From TEM studies it was also observed that while alloys containing lower boron underwent planar slip, deformation was more homogeneous in higher boron alloys due to multiple slip resulting from large number of colony boundaries. Multiple slip is also proposed to be the prime cause of the enhanced strain hardening.

A set of recursive formulas for diffractive optical plates design is described. The pure-phase plates simulated by this method homogeneously concentrate more than 96% of the incident laser energy in the desired focal-plane region. The intensity focal-plane profile fits a lath-order super-Gaussian function and has a nearly perfect flat top. Its fit to the required profile measured in the mean square error is 3.576 x 10(-3). The microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered stainless steel powder, of composition AISI 420, have been measured. Ball-milled powder comprising nanoscale grains was sintered to bulk specimens by two alternative routes: hot-pressing and microlaser sintering. The laser-sintered alloy has a porosity of 6% and comprises a mixture of delta ferrite and tempered martensite, and the relative volume fraction varies along the axis of the specimen due to a thermal cycle that evolves with progressive deposition. In contrast, the hot-pressed alloy has a porosity of 0.7% and exhibits a martensitic lath structure with carbide particles at the boundaries of the prior austenite grains. These differences in microstructure lead to significant differences in mechanical properties. For example, the uniaxial tensile strength of the hot-pressed material is one-half of its compressive strength, due to void initiation at the carbide particles at the prior austenite grain boundaries. Nanoindentation measurements reveal a size effect in hardness and also reveal the sensitivity of hardness to the presence of mechanical polishing and electropolishing. © 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. The crystalline syndiotatic 1,2-polybutadiene was synthesized with a catalyst consisting of iron acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)(3))-triisobutylaluminum (Al(i-Bu)(3))-diethyl phosphite (DEP), and the effects of crystal growth conditions on morphology of thin films of the polymer were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) techniques. The polymer with melting point 179 degreesC was found to have 89.3% 1,2-content and 86.5% syndiotacticity by C-13 NMR measurement. The results of electron microscopic studies indicate that the solution-cast thin films of the syndiotatic 1,2-polybutadiene consist of lath-like lamellae with the c-axis perpendicular to the film plane, while a- and b-axes are in the film plane. The morphology of isothermally crystallized thin films of the polymer is temperature dependent. At lower crystallization temperatures (130 degreesC), a spherulitic structure consisting of flat-on lamellae is formed. With an increase in the crystallization temperature (e.g., at 140 degreesC), the spherulites and single faceted crystals coexist. At higher crystallization temperatures (150 degreesC), single crystals with a hexagonal prismatic shape are produced.

The silicon backbone conformation in poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) has been shown to be a 7/3 helix at ambient conditions, which is in marked contrast to the near-planar conformation of its homologous polymers with side chain lengths of one to three or six to eight carbon atoms. In this work, both the 7/3 helical and near-planar chain conformations are achieved by controlling the solvent evaporation rate around room temperature. The chain conformation and crystal structure obtained in this method have been correlated to the crystal morphology by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV absorption spectrum. The lath-shaped single crystals obtained at 12 degreesC correspond to an orthorhombic form with near-planar chain conformation whereas the lozenge-shaped single crystals obtained at 30 degreesC (in coexistence with the lath-shaped crystals) are orthohexagonal with a 7/3 helix.

The crystallization process and morphology of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) containing meta-phenyl links (PEEKmK) have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results indicate that the thin films of PEEKmK isothermally crystallized from both the glassy state and the melt at the temperature range of 180 similar to 250 degrees C consist of two kinds of morphological forms, i. e. large (order of mu m), flat-on single crystals and narrow, lath-like, edge-on lamellae, The latter consists of the spherulites. Meanwhile, the growing process of the two kinds of morphological forms has been discussed.

Morphologies of solution-cast films of iPP/aPP blends have been studied by means of electron microscopy and X-ray scattering techniques. Microscopic observation showed that solution-cast film of iPP consists of two kinds of structural regions, cross-hatched and lath-liked structures. The addition of small amount of aPP (less than or equal to 30%) into iPP did not change iPP's characteristic crystallization behavior. It is noticed that when the content of aPP in its blend was over 80%, iPP formed a very loosely woven-like network composed of very long lamellae with wide-angle lamellar branchings. The X-ray data showed that aPP did not cocrystallize with iPP.

In the process of room-temperature low cycle fatigue, the China Low Activation Martensitic steel exhibits at the beginning cyclic hardening and then continuous cyclic softening. The grain size decreased and the martensitic lath transformed to cells/subgrains after the tests. The subgrains increase in size with increasing strain amplitude.

China Low Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel is considered to be the main candidate material for the first wall components of future fusion reactors in China. In this paper, the low cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of CLAM steel is studied under fully reversed tension–compression loading at 823 K in air. Total strain amplitude was controlled from 0.14% to 1.8% with a constant strain rate of 2.4×10−3 s−1. The corresponding plastic strain amplitude ranged from 0.023% to 1.613%. The CLAM steel displayed continuous softening to failure at 823 K. The relationship between strain, stress and fatigue life was obtained using the parameters obtained from fatigue tests. The LCF properties of CLAM steel at 823 K followed Coffin–Manson relationship. Furthermore, irregular serration was observed on the stress–strain hysteresis loops of CLAM steel tested with the total strain amplitude of 0.45–1.8%, which was attributed to the dynamic strain aging (DSA) effect. During continuous cyclic deformation, the microstructure and precipitate distribution of CLAM steel changed gradually. Many tempered martensitic laths were decomposed into subgrains, and the size and number of M23C6 carbide and MX carbonitride precipitates decreased with the increase of total strain amplitude. The response cyclic stress promoted the recovery of martensitic lath, while the thermal activation mainly played an important role on the growth of precipitates in CLAM steel at 823 K. In order to have a better understanding of high-temperature LCF behavior, the potential mechanisms controlling stress–strain response, DSA phenomenon and microstructure changes have also been evaluated.

The microstructural evolution during short-term (up to 3000 hours) thermal exposure of three 9/12Cr heat-resistant steels was studied, as well as the mechanical properties after exposure. The tempered martensitic lath structure, as well as the precipitation of carbide and MX type carbonitrides in the steel matrix, was stable after 3000 hours of exposure at 873 K (600 °C). A microstructure observation showed that during the short-term thermal exposure process, the change of mechanical properties was caused mainly by the formation and growth of Laves-phase precipitates in the steels. On thermal exposure, with an increase of cobalt and tungsten contents, cobalt could promote the segregation of tungsten along the martensite lath to form Laves phase, and a large size and high density of Laves-phase precipitates along the grain boundaries could lead to the brittle intergranular fracture of the steels.

Abstract Background Children have been shown to have higher lactate (LaTh) and ventilatory (VeTh) thresholds than adults, which might be explained by lower levels of type-II motor-unit (MU) recruitment. However, the electromyographic threshold (EMGTh), regarded as indicating the onset of accelerated type-II MU recruitment, has been investigated only in adults. Purpose To compare the relative exercise intensity at which the EMGTh occurs in boys versus men. Methods Participants were 21 men (23.4 ± 4.1 years) and 23 boys (11.1 ± 1.1 years), with similar habitual physical activity and peak oxygen consumption (VO2pk) (49.7 ± 5.5 vs. 50.1 ± 7.4 ml kg−1 min−1, respectively). Ramped cycle ergometry was conducted to volitional exhaustion with surface EMG recorded from the right and left vastus lateralis muscles throughout the test (~10 min). The composite right–left EMG root mean square (EMGRMS) was then calculated per pedal revolution. The EMGTh was then determined as the exercise intensity at the point of least residual sum of squares for any two regression line divisions of the EMGRMS plot. Results EMGTh was detected in 20/21 of the men (95.2 %) and only in 18/23 of the boys (78.3 %). The boys’ EMGTh was significantly higher than the men’s (86.4 ± 9.6 vs. 79.7 ± 10.0 % of peak power output at exhaustion; p < 0.05). The pattern was similar when EMGTh was expressed as percentage of VO2pk. Conclusions The boys’ higher EMGTh suggests delayed and hence lesser utilization of type-II MUs in progressive exercise, compared with men. The boys–men EMGTh differences were of similar magnitude as those shown for LaTh and VeTh, further suggesting a common underlying factor.

The Japanese apricot (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc.) is a fruit tree of the Rosaceae family which produces very acid and bitter fruits, highly appreciated by Orientals. In Brazil, this species has been studied as a rootstock for peach and nectarine trees, its main advantage being the reduction in plant vigour, which can favour the production of compact trees and orchard cultural treatments. This study was conducted in the Vegetable Production Department of FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus, São Paulo State, Brazil, and the objective was to examine the effect of wounding the herbaceous cutting bases on the rooting of four Japanese apricot clones. The clones were obtained from plants under cultivation in the Instituto Agronomico de Campinas, Brazil, and were identified as Clones 02, 05, 10 and 15. The stock plants, obtained through herbaceous cuttings, were maintained under lath house conditions (50% of natural light). Cuttings 12 cm long with 3 to 5 leaves were collected from these clones and prepared. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design with 4 repetitions of 20 cuttings per replication, in a factorial 4 x 2 design, the clone factor having 4 levels (Clones 02, 05, 10 and 15) and the wounding factor at 2 levels of incisions into the cutting base (with and without). All the cuttings were treated with 2000 mg.L-1 of IBA for five seconds. Differences between the clones were observed concerning the rooting percentage, dead cuttings, number and length of roots. The incision (wound) at the base of the herbaceous cuttings of the Japanese apricot increased the number of roots and improved the distribution of these in the damaged tissue but the results were not considered sufficiently beneficial to make the treatment worthwhile.
