Status of Early 19th-Century Names Authored in Parallel by Wied and Schinz for South American Reptiles and Amphibians, with Designations of Three Nomina Protecta

Prince Maximilian zu Wied's great exploration of coastal Brazil in 1815-1817 resulted in important collections of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, many of which were new species later described by Wied himself The bulk of his collection was purchased for the American Museum of Natural History in 1869, although many ""type specimens"" had disappeared earlier. Wied carefully identified his localities but did not designate type specimens or type localities, which are taxonomic concepts that were not yet established. Information and manuscript names on a fraction (17 species) of his Brazilian reptiles and amphibians were transmitted by Wied to Prof. Heinrich Rudolf Schinz at the University of Zurich. Schinz included these species (credited to their discoverer ""Princ. Max."") in the second volume of Das Thierreich ... (1822). Most are junior objective synonyms of names published by Wied. However, six of the 17 names used by Schinz predate Wied's own publications. Three were manuscript names never published by Wied because he determined the species to be previously known. (1) Lacerta vittata Schinz, 1822 (a nomen oblitum) = Lacerta striata sensu Wied (a misidentification, non Linnaeus nec sensu Merrem) = Kentropyx calcarata Spix, 1825, herein qualified as a nomen protectum. (2) Polychrus virescens Schinz, 1822 = Lacerta marmorata Linnaeus, 1758 (now Polychrus marmoratus). (3) Scincus cyanurus Schinz, 1822 (a nomen oblitum) = Gymnophthalmus quadrilineatus sensu Wied (a misidentification, non Linnaeus nec sensu Merrem) = Micrablepharus maximiliani (Reinhardt and Lutken, ""1861"" [1862]), herein qualified as a nomen protectum. Qualifying Scincus cyanurus Schinz, 1822, as a nomen oblitum also removes the problem of homonymy with the later-named Pacific skink Scincus cyanurus Lesson (= Emoia cyanura). The remaining three names used by Schinz are senior objective synonyms that take priority over Wied's names. (4) Bufo cinctus Schinz, 1822, is senior to Bufo cinctus Wied, 1823; both, however, are junior synonyms of Bufo crucifer Wied, 1821 = Chaunus crucifer (Wied). (5) Agama picta Schinz, 1822, is senior to Agama picta Wied, 1823, requiring a change of authorship for this poorly known species, to be known as Enyalius pictus (Schinz). (6) Lacerta cyanomelas Schinz, 1822, predates Teius cyanomelas Wied, 1824 (1822-1831) both nomina oblita. Wied's illustration and description shows cyanomelas as apparently conspecific with the recently described but already well-known Cnemidophorus nativo Rocha et al., 1997, which is the valid name because of its qualification herein as a nomen protectum. The preceding specific name cyanomelas (as corrected in an errata section) is misspelled several ways in different copies of Schinz's original description (""cyanom las,"" ""cyanomlas,"" and cyanom""). Loosening, separation, and final loss of the last three letters of movable type in the printing chase probably accounts for the variant misspellings.

New Analytic Solution Related to the Richards, Philip, and Green-Ampt Equations for Infiltration

Based on physical laws of similarity, an analytic solution of the soil water potential form of the Richards equation was derived for water infiltration into a homogeneous sand. The derivation assumes a similarity between the soil water retention function and that of the soil water content profiles taken at fixed times. The new solution successfully described soil water content profiles experimentally measured for water infiltrating downward, upward, and horizontally into a homogeneous sand and agrees with that presented by Philip in 1957. The utility of this analysis is still to be verified, but it is expected to hold for soils that have a narrow pore-size distribution before wetting and that manifest a sharp increase of water content at the wetting front during infiltration. The effect of van Genuchten`s parameters alpha and n on the application of the solution to other porous media was investigated. The solution also improves and provides a more realistic description of the infiltration process than that pioneered by Green and Ampt in 1911.

Reproductive Biology of the Freshwater Shrimp Atya scabra (Leach, 1815) (Crustacea: Atyidae) in Ilheus, Bahia, Brazil

Zoological Studies 49(2): 243-252. Reproduction and population aspects of the freshwater shrimp Atya scabra in the Santana River, city of Ilheus, state of Bahia, Brazil, were studied from Apr. 2004 to May 2005. During these 14 mo, 3752 individuals were captured, with a sex ratio of 1.01 males for each female. The total number of individuals caught per month ranged 80-532. Males were generally larger than females. The smallest female found (5.40 mm in carapace length and 29.03 mm in total length) was ovigerous, which indicates that only adult individuals were caught. Ovigerous females were found every month, which indicates continuous reproduction and a high index of reproductive activity during the year. The highest reproduction indices were observed in May (94.3%) and Oct. (98.6%) 2004, and Mar. (93.7%) 2005. Fecundity ranged 870-8907 eggs, with a mean of 3811 (+/- 1992.87) eggs per female. The size of the females and their fecundity were positively correlated. The distribution of individuals in length classes by month showed that representatives of smaller classes occurred throughout almost the entire study period. This indicates a constant input of individuals into the population, which corroborates the characterization of the reproductive period as being continuous, and explains the large numbers of ovigerous females found each month. A democratização da sociedade internacional e o Brasil: ensaio sobre uma mutação histórica de longo prazo (1815-1997)

Entre o Congresso de Viena, no qual estiveram representados apenas 8 Estados "cristãos", as conferências da paz da Haia e o tratado de Versalhes, que envolveram pouco mais de duas dezenas de países, e o atual sistema onusiano, praticamente universal, a sociedade internacional conheceu uma profunda democratização nos últimos dois séculos, mesmo se os fundamentos do poder não tenham conhecido modificação substancial. Esse fenômeno de ampliação da antiga "democracia censitária" é particularmente visível na elaboração de normas e instituições para o relacionamento econômico internacional, onde as organizações multilaterais de cooperação técnica desempenham relevante papel na construção da interdependência. Este ensaio histórico segue, na longa duração, a evolução do multilateralismo, fundamentalmente em sua vertente econômica, e examina a inserção internacional do Brasil, um dos poucos países da periferia a terem participado ativamente da construção da "ordem econômica internacional" em várias épocas, através de uma ativa participação nas mais diversas conferências multilaterais que presidiram ao nascimentos dessas organizações intergovernamentais de cooperação.

Um tabuleiro de duas faces: o lúdico e o aleatório na ficção científica de Philip K. Dick

Embora apenas quatro títulos da obra de Philip K. Dick abordem o tema do acaso – Solar Lottery (escrito em 1954), The Man in the High Castle (1961), The Game Players of Titan (1963) e A Maze of Death (1968) –, este surge contudo associado, e de forma bastante coerente, a outros, como a oposição humano/inumano ou a dialéctica entre a percepção e a realidade, que são mais comummente referidos como dominantes no autor. A estratégia seguida neste artigo consiste, após uma sumária passagem pelas novelas acima referidas, na demonstração de como uma aparente dualidade no tratamento do acaso pode ser resolvida a partir do momento em que se assume uma perspectiva mais alargada do universo temático de Philip K. Dick.
