On Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 54, we recovered upper Pliocene (Globigerinoides obliquus: PL6 zone) to Pleistocene sediments from the equatorial East Pacific Rise (EPR) and Galapagos spreading center (GSC). Progressively older sediments were drilled at increasing distances from the crest, with the exception of the sediment drilled in the deepest trough known in the Siqueiros fracture zone. The anomalous age obtained at the latter site suggests that the basalt which was drilled may represent fracture zone volcanism. Paleoenvironmental analysis using the planktonic foraminifers at the EPR sites indicated the presence of environmental cycles of shorter wave length during the interval from 0 to 0.24 Ma, whereas cycles of longer wave length occurred from 0.43 to 2.17 Ma. The planktonic foraminiferal taphocoenoses at the EPR sites were strongly affected by selective dissolution which indicated that these EPR sites have been near either the lysocline or carbonate compensation surface since the upper Pliocene. The planktonic foraminiferal thanatocoenoses at the GSC sites were preserved better than those at the EPR sites. The number of planktonic foraminiferal species generally was greatly reduced in the green mud associated with the GSC hydrothermal mounds. More species were found in older than in younger green mud; this suggests that there probably was an increase in the rate of production of green mud sometime after the initiation of the hydrothermal system.

Nodule samples obtained were described and studied on board for 1) observation of occurrence and morphology in and outside samplers, size classification, measurement of weight and calculation of population density (kg/m2); 2) photographing whole nodules on the plate marked with the frames of unit areas of both 0cean-70 (0.50 m2) and freefall grab (0.13 m2), and that of typical samples on the plate with a 5 cm grid scale: 3) observation of internal structures of the nodules on cut section; and 4) determination of mineral composition by X-ray diffractometer. The relation between nodule types and geological environment or chemical composition was examined by referring to other data of related studies, such as sedimentology. acoustic survey, and chemical analysis.

The effects of two major electrodeposition process conditions, electrolyte bath temperature and current density, on the microstructure and crystallographic texture of pure tin coatings on brass and, ultimately, on the extent of whisker formation have been examined. The grain size of the deposited coatings increased with increasing electrolyte bath temperature and current density, which significantly affected the dominant texture: (211) or (420) was the dominant texture at low current densities whereas, depending on deposition temperature, (200) or (220) became the dominant texture at high current densities. After deposition, coatings were subjected to different environmental conditions, for example isothermal aging (room temperature, 50A degrees C, or 150A degrees C) for up to 90 days and thermal cycling between -25A degrees C and 85A degrees C for 100 cycles, and whisker growth was studied. The Sn coatings with low Miller index planes, for example (200) and (220), and with moderate aging temperature were more prone to whiskering than coating with high Miller index planes, for example (420), and high aging temperature. A processing route involving the optimum combination of current density and deposition temperature is proposed for suppressing whisker growth.

The work in this sub-project of ESOP focuses on the advective and convective transforma-tion of water masses in the Greenland Sea and its neighbouring areas. It includes observational work on the sub-mesoscale and analysis of hydrographic data up to the gyre-scale. Observations of active convective plumes were made with a towed chain equipped with up to 80 CTD sensors, giving a horizontal and vertical resolution of the hydrographic fields of a few metres. The observed scales of the penetrative convective plumes compare well with those given by theory. On the mesoscale the structure of homogeneous eddies formed as a result of deep convection was observed and the associated mixing and renewal of the intermediate layers quantified. The relative importance and efficiency of thermal and haline penetrative convection in relation to the surface boundary conditions (heat and salt fluxes and ice cover) and the ambient stratification are studied using the multi year time series of hydro-graphic data in the central Greenland Sea. The modification of the water column of the Greenland Sea gyre through advection from and mixing with water at its rim is assessed on longer time scales. The relative contributions are quantified using modern water mass analysis methods based on inverse techniques. Likewise the convective renewal and the spreading of the Arctic Intermediate Water from its formation area is quantified. The aim is to budget the heat and salt content of the water column, in particular of the low salinity surface layer, and to relate its seasonal and interannual variability to the lateral fluxes and the fluxes at the air-sea-ice interface. This will allow to estimate residence times for the different layers of the Greenland Sea gyre, a quantity important for the description of the Polar Ocean carbon cycle.
