The first anhydrite reported from oceanic basalts occurs in altered basalts drilled during DSDP Leg 70 from Hole 504B. Anhydrite has been identified in several samples, two of which were studied in detail. Anhydrite in Sample 504B-40-3 (130-135 cm), which was acquired at 310 meters sub-basement, occurs in a dolerite at the center of a vug rimmed by saponite and calcite. Red iron-hydroxide-rich alteration halos occur from 0 to 310 meters sub-basement; primary sulfides in these halos are oxidized, and the rocks have lost large amounts of sulfur. The anhydrite in this sample has a d34S value of 18.5 per mil, and it is interpreted to have formed from a fluid containing a mixture of seawater sulfate (20.9 per mil) and basaltic sulfur (0 per mil) released during the oxidation of primary sulfides. Anhydrite in Sample 504B-48-3 (14-18 cm), which was found at 376 meters sub-basement, occurs intergrown with gyrolite at the center of a 1-cm-wide vein that is rimmed by saponite and quartz. At sub-basement depths below 310 meters to the bottom of the Leg 70 section (562 m sub-basement), the rocks exhibit the effects of anoxic alteration with common secondary pyrite. Anhydrite in Sample 504B-48-3 (14-18 cm) has a d34S value of 36.7 per mil, and it is interpreted to have formed from seawater-derived fluids enriched in 34S through sulfate reduction. Temperatures of alteration calculated from oxygen isotope data range from 60 to 100°C. Sulfate reduction may have occurred in situ, or elsewhere at higher temperature, possibly deeper in the crust. The secondary mineral paragenetic sequence indicates a progressive decrease in Mg and increase in Ca in the circulating fluids. This eventually led to anhydrite formation late in the alteration process.

I. The thermomagnetic behavior and infrared spectroscopic features of KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 (jarosite), (H3O)Fe3(SO4)2 (OH)6 (hydronium jarosite), KFe3(CrO4)2 (OH)6, Fe(OH)SO4 (basic iron sulfate), and Fe(OH)CrO4 (basic iron chromate) are reported. Fe(OH)CrO4 and KFe3(CrO4)2 (OH)6 are shown to be weak ferro magnets with Curie temperatures of 73 and 71 °K, respectively. This unusual magnetic behavior is rationalized in terms of the ionic spin configurations of the phases. Exchange coupling through chromate bridging groups is shown to be weak.

II. The magnetic behavior and the influence of preparative history on the magnetic behavior of δFeO(OH) is reported. δFeO(OH) is shown to be a fine-particulate, uniaxial, magnetic species. Magnetization data for this species are shown to be consistent with the existence of magnetically inactive layers surrounding magnetic particles.

Stoichiometrically equivalent concentrations of ethylenediaminetetraacetate, EDTA, and of related chelating anions increase the adsorption of ca. millimolar concentrations heavy metal aqua-ions on amorphous precipitates of aluminium(III) or iron(III) hydroxide and, although higher concentrations decrease the adsorption, poly-EDTA, a polyelectrolyte containing EDTA functional groups, shows no such decrease.

The mineral coquimbite has been analysed using a range of techniques including SEM with EDX, thermal analytical techniques and Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The mineral originated from the Javier Ortega mine, Lucanas Province, Peru. The chemical formula was determined as ðFe3þ 1:37; Al0:63ÞP2:00ðSO4Þ3 9H2O. Thermal analysis showed a total mass loss of 73.4% on heating to 1000 C. A mass loss of 30.43% at 641.4 C is attributed to the loss of SO3. Observed Raman and infrared bands were assigned to the stretching and bending vibrations of sulphate tetrahedra, aluminium oxide/hydroxide octahedra, water molecules and hydroxyl ions. The Raman spectrum shows well resolved bands at 2994, 3176, 3327, 3422 and 3580 cm 1 attributed to water stretching vibrations. Vibrational spectroscopy combined with thermal analysis provides insight into the structure of coquimbite.

Recently nano scale zero valent iron particles (nZVI) have been considered as smart adsorbent for environmental and groundwater remediation. Although several synthetic methods are available for the preparation of nZVI, air stable nZVI are not available for remediation works. Further, challenges demand synthesis of nZVI without stabilizers and capping agents. A modified methodology for the synthesis of air stable nZVI has been developed without any capping agents and characterized by powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy-dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The results of the present study suggest that the synthetic nZVI are air-stable over a period of one year and consists of particles of 30-40 nm in diameter. Although a layer of less than 3 am thick oxide/hydroxide is observed by TEM and XPS, it appears to be due to oxidation of outer surface during analysis. Adsorption study has shown that the synthetic nZVI are more effective adsorbent than the commercial nZVI and can remove simultaneously arsenite As-III] and arsenate As-V] from water without prior reduction of As-V to As-III. The removal process is adsorptive rather than precipitative and the removal of As-III is greater than that of As-V.

The interaction of OH- with Fe(TPP)(+), Fe(TDCPP)(+), Fe(TMP)(+) and Fe(TFPP)(+) in 1,2-dichloroethane was studied by titrating FeP solutions with aliquots of a solution of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide in acetonitrile. The number of OH- ions (n) coordinated to the FeP and the stability constants (beta(n)) for the FeP-OH- complexes were calculated from UV-Vis absorbance data and iron spin states were determined through EPR spectroscopy, Fe(TMP) (+) forms a high-spin mono-hydroxo complex, while Fe(TPP)I and Fe(TDCPP)(+) form high-spin bis-hydroxo complexes. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the formation of bis-hydroxo complexes from Fe(TPP) (+) has been reported, and this was possible because the studies were carried out in basic organic media, In this same medium, Fe-III-Fe-II reduction upon OH- addition to Fe(TFPP) (+) was observed, without concomitant formation of the mu-oxo dimeric species [Fe(TFPP)](2)O. Fe-Mn-concretions of a spheroidal type were found according to electron probe determinations to consist of alternating iron- and manganese-rich layers. This pattern was ascribed to seasonal variations in the physico-chemical conditions governing the precipitation of the hydrous oxides of iron and manganese. Calculations based on the rhythmic growth of the concretions investigated gave a mean accumulation rate of 0.15-0.20 mm/yr. The rather high phosphorus content (average 3.5 % P2O5) of the concretions was found to be concentrated in the iron-rich layers, probably as a result of the scavenging effect of ferric hydroxide.
