A hyperplane arrangement is a finite set of hyperplanes in a real affine space. An especially important arrangement is the braid arrangement, which is the set of all hyperplanes xi - xj = 1, 1 interval orders and with the enumeration of trees. For instance, the number of labeled interval orders that can be obtained from n intervals I1,..., In of generic lengths is counted. There is also discussed an arrangement due to N. Linial whose number of regions is the number of alternating (or intransitive) trees, as defined by Gelfand, Graev, and Postnikov [Gelfand, I. M., Graev, M. I., and Postnikov, A. (1995), preprint]. Finally, a refinement is given, related to counting labeled trees by number of inversions, of a result of Shi [Shi, J.-Y. (1986), Lecture Notes in Mathematics, no. 1179, Springer-Verlag] that a certain deformation of the braid arrangement has (n + 1)n-1 regions.

We study the global bifurcation of nonlinear Sturm-Liouville problems of the form -(pu')' + qu = lambda a(x)f(u), b(0)u(0) - c(0)u' (0) = 0, b(1)u(1) + c(1)u'(1) = 0 which are not linearizable in any neighborhood of the origin. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We construct a set of functions, say, psi([r])(n) composed of a cosine function and a sigmoidal transformation gamma(r) of order r > 0. The present functions are orthonormal with respect to a proper weight function on the interval [-1, 1]. It is proven that if a function f is continuous and piecewise smooth on [-1, 1] then its series expansion based on psi([r])(n) converges uniformly to f so long as the order of the sigmoidal transformation employed is 0 < r

An embedding X ⊂ G of a topological space X into a topological group G is called functorial if every homeomorphism of X extends to a continuous group homomorphism of G. It is shown that the interval [0, 1] admits no functorial embedding into a finite-dimensional or metrizable topological group.

Basic concepts for an interval arithmetic standard are discussed in the paper. Interval arithmetic deals with closed and connected sets of real numbers. Unlike floating-point arithmetic it is free of exceptions. A complete set of formulas to approximate real interval arithmetic on the computer is displayed in section 3 of the paper. The essential comparison relations and lattice operations are discussed in section 6. Evaluation of functions for interval arguments is studied in section 7. The desirability of variable length interval arithmetic is also discussed in the paper. The requirement to adapt the digital computer to the needs of interval arithmetic is as old as interval arithmetic. An obvious, simple possible solution is shown in section 8.

The three-parameter lognormal distribution is the extension of the two-parameter lognormal distribution to meet the need of the biological, sociological, and other fields. Numerous research papers have been published for the parameter estimation problems for the lognormal distributions. The inclusion of the location parameter brings in some technical difficulties for the parameter estimation problems, especially for the interval estimation. This paper proposes a method for constructing exact confidence intervals and exact upper confidence limits for the location parameter of the three-parameter lognormal distribution. The point estimation problem is discussed as well. The performance of the point estimator is compared with the maximum likelihood estimator, which is widely used in practice. Simulation result shows that the proposed method is less biased in estimating the location parameter. The large sample size case is discussed in the paper.
