Indigenous construction of fishing boats at Versova village in Maharashtra State

Versova, one of the 23 fishing villages in the district of Greater Bombay, is a major fishing centre. During the last three decades mechanisation of fishing boats received a tremendous boost in the state specially in and around Bombay resulting in higher income and gainful employment to fishermen. Indigenous construction of fishing boats at Versova contributes to the marine fisheries development. Inspite of certain constraints in construction activities, training of artisans in boat construction would ultimately help in the economic growth of the village.

Biodeterioration of wooden boats: a major problem facing marine fisheries

In India, the fishing industry alone incurs an annual loss of over 120 million rupees on account of biodeterioration of wooden fishing craft. None of the timber species, currently in demand for boat-building, possesses an natural bioresistance and will be completely destroyed within 6 to 12 months. Preventive measures against biodeterioration range from application of several indigenous formulations to metallic sheathings and pressure impregnation of wood with preservative chemicals. These methods do not provide lasting protection, as each has its own short-comings and inadequacies. The need for long-term research in the field of marine biodeterioration for improving the efficiency of currently known control measures, with emphasis on application of non-polluting biological methods, is stressed.

Towing resistance of ottar [i.e. otter] trawls used for shrimps from small mechanised boats

Attempts have been made to determine the towing resistance of the shrimp otter trawls operated from small trawlers off Cochin and the actual resistance on the warps for eight different boats working under the normal fishing conditions have been measured. Engine Horse Power utilised for towing the gear at normal speed and fishing conditions has also been estimated.

Standardisation and mass production of shrimp trawlers and other fishing boats in India

This paper deals with the existing fishing crafts, new vessel types, boat building programmes, their standardisation and mass-production in India.

Indigenous substitutes for "Lignum vitae" for making stern bearings for fishing boats

Difficulties are very often encountered in selecting proper material for making stern bearings for fishing boats. Conventional materials such as white metal, bronze etc. wear out too fast also causing considerable wear to the propeller shaft. Lignum-vitae, a natural wood commonly used for this purpose, is not available on a commercial scale in our country. Results of trials carried out to find out suitable substitutes for lignum-vitae from among indigenous timbers are presented in this paper.

Computational fluid-structure interaction methods for simulation of inflatable aerodynamic decelerators

Inflatable aerodynamic decelerators have potential advantages for planetary re-entry in robotic and human exploration missions. It is theorized that volume-mass characteristics of these decelerators are superior to those of common supersonic/subsonic parachutes and after deployment they may suffer no instabilities at high Mach numbers. A high fidelity computational fluid-structure interaction model is employed to investigate the behavior of tension cone inflatable aeroshells at supersonic speeds up to Mach 2.0. The computational framework targets the large displacements regime encountered during the inflation of the decelerator using fast level set techniques to incorporate boundary conditions of the moving structure. The preliminary results indicate large but steady aeroshell displacement with rich dynamics, including buckling of the inflatable torus that maintains the decelerator open under normal operational conditions, owing to interactions with the turbulent wake. Fluid-structure interaction simulation of an inflatable aerodynamic tension-cone decelerator

Inflatable aerodynamic decelerators have potential advantages for planetary re-entry in robotic and human exploration missions. In this paper, we focus on an inflatable tension cone design that has potential advantages over other geometries. A computational fluid-structure interaction model of a tension cone is employed to investigate the behavior of the inflatable aeroshell at supersonic speeds for conditions matching recent experimental results. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the deflections of the tension cone as a function of inflation pressure of the torus at a Mach of 2.5. Comparison of the behavior of the structure, amplitude of deformations, and determined loads are reported. © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Cathodic protection of aluminium sheathed wooden fishing boats with ternary aluminium anodes

Results of laboratory and field trials on cathodic protection of aluminium sheathing in fishing boats by ternary aluminium anodes are presented. The high negative potential of 1.06 V with respect to saturated calomel electrode, its appreciably low anodic polarization and high current output are favourable factors for using the ternary aluminium anodes. The low rate of consumption of the anode material under service trials attests its economic viability.

A case history on the phenomenal corrosion of marine propellers in fishing boats

Although high tensile brassess of copper-zinc alloys (Manganese bronze) find extensive use in all marine applications, under aggressive sea-water, marine propellers cast out of such an alloy frequently suffer heavy corrosion damages due to dezincification. An interesting case history where a number of propellers have undergone dezincification in the Cochin backwaters is narrated in this paper.

Utilization of treated wood, steel, fibreglass, ferrocement and aluminium in the construction of modern fishing boats and their comparative cost analysis

Modern fishing boats have to be built not only on perfect lines but also with sound and strong construction materials that will ensure a long lasting trouble free service commensurate with the heavy capital investment involved. Choice of construction materials for fishing boats need careful scrutiny as they have to perform too well under most aggressive environments-sea-water and marine atmosphere. A number of alternative boat-building materials are now available whose comparative merits and demerits as well as comparative costs are brought out in this paper.

On the design, operation and efficiency of 11 m dual purpose trawl for small machanised [i.e. mechanised] boats

Preliminary midwater fishing trials were conducted off Cochin with an 11m dual purpose trawl during the monsoon months when the prawns were available in the column layers. Further, with a view to assess its suitability as bottom trawl, the gear with suitable modifications in the rigging was towed in comparison with a 15m bottom trawl along the depth ranges of 5-10m and 10-20m and the fishing operations were found satisfactory.
