Silicon carbide (SiC) is an important orthopaedic material due to its inert nature and superior mechanical and tribological properties. Some of the potential applications of silicon carbide include coating for stents to enhance hemocompatibility, coating for prosthetic-bearing surfaces and uncemented joint prosthetics. This study is the first to explore nanomechanical response of single crystal 4H-SiC through quasistatic nanoindentation. Displacement controlled quasistatic nanoindentation experiments were performed on single crystal 4H-SiC specimen using a blunt Berkovich indenter (300 nm tip radius) at extremely fine indentation depths of 5 nm, 10 nm, 12 nm, 20 nm, 25 nm and 50 nm. Load-displacement curve obtained from the indentation experiments showed yielding or incipient plasticity in 4H-SiC typically at a shear stress of about 21 GPa (~an indentation depth of 33.8 nm) through a pop-in event. An interesting observation was that the residual depth of indent showed three distinct patterns: (i) Positive depth hysteresis above 33 nm, (ii) no depth hysteresis at 12 nm, and (iii) negative depth hysteresis below 12 nm. This contrasting depth hysteresis phenomenon is hypothesized to originate due to the existence of compressive residual stresses (upto 143 MPa) induced in the specimen by the polishing process prior to the nanoindentation

This paper presents the application of the on-load exciting current Extended Park's Vector Approach for diagnosing incipient turn-to-turn winding faults in operating power transformers. Experimental and simulated test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, which is based on the spectral analysis of the AC component of the on-load exciting current Park's Vector modulus.

Urban regeneration in Western countries can count on a long-lasting tradition of experiences in which civil society has played a fundamental role in counterbalancing the system of power, resulting in profound urban governance readjustments. This has been the result of the increasing centrality of horizontal alliances between citizens and associations involved in urban affairs since the late 1960s in the West. Similar theoretical frameworks have been applied in China. However, these have frequently resulted in conceptual shortcuts that depict civil society as immature or lacking and the state as authoritarian. This paper will explore whether these categories are still entirely valid to urban regeneration in China. While the regime has traditionally prevented horizontal linkages of associations in urban governance (supporting their vertical integration to ensure a certain degree of soft control), there are signs of change. In particular, three cases of urban regeneration in historic areas will be used to discuss the changing role played by civil society in China. The ultimate goal is to examine whether horizontal linkages across groups of heterogeneous citizens are arising at the micro-level of urban governance.

It is generally thought that catalysts produced by incipient wetness impregnation (IW) are very poor for low temperature CO oxidation, and that it is necessary to use methods such as deposition-precipitation (DP) to make high activity materials. The former is true, indeed such IW catalysts are poor, and we present reactor data, XPS and TEM analysis which show that this is due to the very negative effect of the chloride anion involved in the preparation, which results in poisoning and excessive sintering of the Au particles. With the DP method, the chloride is largely removed during the preparation and so poisoning and sintering are avoided. However, we show here that, contrary to previous considerations, high activity catalysts can indeed be prepared by the incipient wetness method, if care is taken to remove the chloride ion during the process. This is achieved by using the double impregnation method (DIM). In this a double impregnation of chloroauric acid and a base are made to precipitate out gold hydroxide within the pores of the catalyst, followed by limited washing. This results in a much more active catalyst, which is active for CO oxidation at ambient temperature. The results for DIM and DP are compared, and it is proposed that the DIM method may represent an environmentally and economically more favorable route to high activity gold catalyst production. Transplants of incipient colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta into areas in which mature colonies had been eliminated did not result in higher rates of success than in areas in which mature colonies were present. However for both types of sites, Pogonomyrmex (Ephebomyrmex) nagelli colonies were found in cleared sites used for transplants, with the number of translocated P. nagelli nests higher in areas which had not been treated with Mirex for S. invicta colony reduction. These results suggest that small colonies may be displaced by larger colonies of other species.

Patterns of colonization by queens and incipient nest survival of the leaf-cutting ants Acromyrmex niger and Acromyrmex balzani were studied by means of belt transects and individually marked incipient nests. No relation was found between colony density and the number of colonization attempts. Both species are not claustral, and high rates of queen mortality were attributed to conspecific executions and predation. of other discernable mortality factors, failure of fungal garden establishment was the most important. Only 34 of 296 A. balzani and 13 of 154 A. niger marked colonies were alive at the end of one year. These figures are higher than those reported for species of Atta. These results are contrasted with those of claustral-founding Atta species. Small colonies are occasionally raided by larger colonies which robbed brood.

Coptotermes havilandi Holmgren is an oriental species introduced into Brazil. Despite its economic impact as structural pest, very little is known about the biology of this termite. This paper describes observations of C. havilandi swarming in the city of Rio Claro (SP, Brazil), and reports the first data on incipient colonies reared in a laboratory in Brazil. The preoviposition period lasted about a week after pairing; oviposition began in most of the incipient colonies during the second week. Antennal mutilation occurred on all reproductives. The mean number of the first batch of eggs was 13. In general, first instar brood hatched 60-70 days after set up of the colonies. After two years of pairing there was a small population (less than 100 individuals) and limited soldier production (n=2) in incipient colonies of C. havilandi.

Fifty two colonies of Coptotermes havilandi were set up under laboratory conditions using alates collected from an urban area during a period of swarming. The first artificial nest used for each royal couple was a 6cm diameter Petri dish (22ml) filled with a moistened matrix of decayed pine sawdust. After 6 months, these colonies were transferred to 250ml plastic containers with the same culturing matrix. After 24 months a census of all colonies was performed. Each young colony had a live royal pair and the population size of all colonies indicated a nonlinear development. The total population (workers + soldiers + immatures + reproductives) of these incipient colonies ranged from 64 to 1, 164, with a mean of 345 individuals. The number of workers ranged from 53 to 830 individuals, and the number of soldiers ranged from 6 to 83. The present data showed a higher population of incipient colonies than our previous record for the species. We also compared the development of 12 transferred colonies to that of 12 untransferred incipient colonies. The results showed a higher population in transferred colonies, but in both incipient colonies (transferred and untransferred) there was a wide variation in total population. The correlation between queen weight and population size was positive in all 24 colonies.
