The dependence of the maximum and average energies of protons, which were produced in the interaction of an intense laser pulse (similar to 1 x 10(16) W cm(-2), 65 fs) with hydrogen clusters in a gas jet backed up to 80 bar at liquid nitrogen temperature (similar to 80 K), on the backing pressure has been studied. The general trend of the proton energy dependence on the square of the average cluster radius, which is determined by a calibrated Rayleigh scattering measurement, is similar to that described by theory under the single size approximation. Calculations are made to fit the experimental results under a simplified model by taking into account both a log-normal cluster size distribution and the laser intensity attenuation in the interaction volume. A very good agreement between the experimental proton energy spectra and the calculations is obtained in the high- energy part of the proton energy distributions, but a discrepancy of the fits is revealed in the low-energy part at higher backing pressures which are associated with denser flows. A possible mechanism which would be responsible for this discrepancy is discussed. Finally, from the fits, a variation of the cluster size distributions was revealed to be dependent on the gas backing pressure as well as on the evolving time of the gas flow of clusters.

The energy spectra of tritons and Helium-3 nuclei from the reactions 3He(d,t)2p, 3H(d,3He)2n, 3He(d,3He)pn, and 3H(d,t)pn were measured between 6° and 20° at a bombarding energy of 10.9 MeV. An upper limit of 5 μb/sr. was obtained for producing a bound di-neutron at 6° and 7.5°. The 3He(d,t)2p and 3H(d,3He)2n data, together with previous measurements at higher energies, have been used to investigate whether one can unambiguously extract information on the two-nucleon system from these three-body final state reactions. As an aid to these theoretical investigations, Born approximation calculations were made employing realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials and an antisymmetrized final state wave function for the five-particle system. These calculations reproduce many of the features observed in the experimental data and indicate that the role of exchange processes cannot be ignored. The results show that previous attempts to obtain information on the neutron-neutron scattering length from the 3H(d,3He)2n reaction may have seriously overestimated the precision that could be attained.

The electronic structure of rutile TiO2 quantum dots (QDs) are investigated via the first-principles band structure method. We first propose a model to passivate the rutile TiO2 surfaces for the local density approximation calculations. In this model pseudohydrogen atoms are used to passivate the surface dangling bonds, which remove the localized in-cap surface states in the TiO2 QDs. As the size of the QD decreases, the band gap evolves as E-g(dot) = E-g(bulk) + 73.70/d(1.93), where E-g(dot) and d are the band gap and diameter of the QD, and E-g(bulk) is the band gap of the bulk rutile TiO2. The valence band maximum and the conduction band minimum states of the QDs are distributed mostly in the interior of the QDs, and they well inherit the atomic characteristics of those states of the bulk rutile TiO2.

Distorted-wave Born approximation calculations for Ps formation in positron impact on He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe are reported for the energy range up to 200 eV. Capture into the n = 1, 2 and 3 states of Ps is calculated explicitly and 1/n(3) scaling is used to estimate capture into states with n > 3. The calculations for the heavier noble gases allow for capture not only from the outer np(6) shell of the atom but also from the first inner ns(2) shell. However, the inner shell capture is found to be very small. Although by no means unambiguous, the calculations provide some support to the conjecture of Larrichia et al. [J. Phys. B 35 (2002) 2525] that the double peak and shoulder structures observed experimentally for Ps formation in Ar, Kr and Xe arise from formation in excited states. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The impulse approximation is used to calculate cross sections for fragmentation of Ps(1s) in collision with He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. Triple, double, single, and total cross sections are evaluated. Reasonably good agreement is found with the measurements of Armitage [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 173402 (2002)] on Ps(1s)+He(1(1)S) scattering. These absolute measurements comprise the total Ps ionization cross section and the cross section differential with respect to the longitudinal energy of the ejected positron. Characteristics of free electron and free positron scattering are explored in the double and triple differential cross sections for Ps(1s)+Xe scattering.

Cross sections differential with respect to energy and angle of ejected positrons and electrons for Ps(ls) fragmentation in collision with He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe targets are reported. For Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe, only the case where the target is not excited (target elastic collisions) is considered. For He, fragmentation with target excitation/ionization (target inelastic collisions) is also studied. The impulse approximation has been used for target elastic fragmentation, the first Born approximation for target inelastic processes. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The correlated process of photodetaching two electrons from the F- ion following the absorption of a single photon has been investigated over an energy range 20-62 eV. In the experiment, a beam of photons from the Advanced Light Source was collinearly merged with a counter-propagating beam of F- ions from a sputter ion source. The F+ ions produced in the interaction region were detected, and the normalized signal was used to monitor the relative cross section for the double-detachment reaction. An absolute scale for the cross section was established by measuring the spatial overlap of the two beams and by determining the efficiency for collection and detection of the F+ ions. The measured cross section is compared with R-matrix and random phase approximation calculations. These calculations show that the Auger decay of the 2s2p(6) core-excited state of the F atom plays a minor role in the production of F+ ions and that double detachment is likely to be dominated by simultaneous correlated ejection of two valence electrons at energies well above threshold.

Mode-mixing of coherent excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is modeled using the Bogoliubov approximation. Calculations are presented for second-harmonic generation between the two lowest-lying even-parity m=0 modes in an oblate spheroidal trap. Hybridization of the modes of the breather (l=0) and surface (l=4) states leads to the formation of a Bogoliubov dark state near phase-matching resonance so that a single mode is coherently populated. Efficient harmonic generation requires a strong coupling rate, sharply-defined and well-separated frequency spectrum, and good phase matching. We find that in all three respects the quantal results are significantly different from hydrodynamic predictions. Typically the second-harmonic conversion rate is half that given by an equivalent hydrodynamic estimate.

A pseudopotential for positronium-atom interaction, based on electron-atom and positron-atom phase shifts, is constructed, and the phase shifts for Ps-Kr and Ps-Ar scattering are calculated. This approach allows us to extend the Ps-atom cross sections, obtained previously in the impulse approximation [I. I. Fabrikant and G. F. Gribakin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 243201 (2014)], to energies below the Ps ionization threshold. Although experimental data are not available in this low-energy region, our results describe well the tendency of the measured cross sections to drop with decreasing velocity at v < 1 a.u. Our results show that the effect of the Ps-atom van der Waals interaction is weak compared to the polarization interaction in electron-atom and positron-atom scattering. As a result, the Ps scattering length for both Ar and Kr is positive, and the Ramsauer-Townsend minimum is not observed for Ps scattering from these targets. This makes Ps scattering quite different from electron scattering in the low-energy region, in contrast to the intermediate energy range from the Ps ionization threshold up to v ∼ 2 a.u., where the two are similar.

The scattering of orthopositronium (Ps) by hydrogen atoms has been investigated in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed electron-exchange model potential. The higher (n greater than or equal to 3) excitations and ionization of the Ps atom are calculated using the first Born approximation. Calculations are reported of scattering lengths, phase shifts. elastic, Ps and H excitation, and total cross sections. Remarkable correlations are observed between the S-wave Ps-H binding energy and the singlet scattering length, effective range, and resonance energy obtained in various model calculations. These correlations suggest that if a Ps-H dynamical model yields the correct result for one of these four observables, it is expected to lead to the correct result for the other three. The present model, which is constructed so as to reproduce the Ps-H resonance at 4.01 eV, automatically yields a Ps-H bound state at - 1.05 eV that compares well with the accurate value of - 1.067 eV. The model leads to a singlet scattering length of 3.72a(0) and effective range of 1.67a(0), whereas the correlations suggest the precise values of 3.50a(0) and 1.65a(0) for these observables, respectively. The effects of nonlinear scalar field couplings on elastic proton-nucleus scattering observables are investigated using a relativistic impulse approximation. Nonlinear couplings affect in a nontrivial way the effective nucleon mass and the nuclear scalar and vector densities. Modifications on the densities might have observable consequences on scattering observables. Our investigation indicates that the description of the observables for the reactions p-O-16 and p-Ca-40 at 200 MeV are not greatly modified with the use of nonlinear models in comparison with the description using linear models.

We show that the electromagnetic current for a system composed by two charged bosons has a structure of many bodies even in the impulse approximation, when described in the time x +. In terms of the two body component for the bound state, the current contains two body operators.
