We consider a Cauchy problem for the heat equation, where the temperature field is to be reconstructed from the temperature and heat flux given on a part of the boundary of the solution domain. We employ a Landweber type method proposed in [2], where a sequence of mixed well-posed problems are solved at each iteration step to obtain a stable approximation to the original Cauchy problem. We develop an efficient boundary integral equation method for the numerical solution of these mixed problems, based on the method of Rothe. Numerical examples are presented both with exact and noisy data, showing the efficiency and stability of the proposed procedure and approximations.

In this article, we obtain explicit solutions of a system of forced Burgers equation subject to some classes of bounded and compactly supported initial data and also subject to certain unbounded initial data. In a series of papers, Rao and Yadav (2010) 1-3] obtained explicit solutions of a nonhomogeneous Burgers equation in one dimension subject to certain classes of bounded and unbounded initial data. Earlier Kloosterziel (1990) 4] represented the solution of an initial value problem for the heat equation, with initial data in L-2 (R-n, e(vertical bar x vertical bar 2/2)), as a series of self-similar solutions of the heat equation in R-n. Here we express the solutions of certain classes of Cauchy problems for a system of forced Burgers equation in terms of self-similar solutions of some linear partial differential equations. Differential equations are often directly solvable by analytical means only in their one dimensional version. Partial differential equations are generally not solvable by analytical means in two and three dimensions, with the exception of few special cases. In all other cases, numerical approximation methods need to be utilized. One of the most popular methods is the finite element method. The main areas of focus, here, are the Poisson heat equation and the plate bending equation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a quick walkthrough of the various approaches that the authors followed in pursuit of creating optimal solvers, accelerated with the use of graphical processing units, and comparing them in terms of accuracy and time efficiency with existing or self-made non-accelerated solvers.

The problem of heat conduction in one-dimensional piecewise homogeneous composite materials is examined by providing an explicit solution of the one-dimensional heat equation in each domain. The location of the interfaces is known, but neither temperature nor heat flux are prescribed there. Instead, the physical assumptions of their continuity at the interfaces are the only conditions imposed. The problem of two semi-infinite domains and that of two finite-sized domains are examined in detail. We indicate also how to extend the solution method to the setting of one finite-sized domain surrounded on both sides by semi-infinite domains, and on that of three finite-sized domains.

We study generalized viscous Cahn-Hilliard problems with nonlinearities satisfying critical growth conditions in W-0(1,p)(Omega), where Omega is a bounded smooth domain in R-n, n >= 3. In the critical growth case, we prove that the problems are locally well posed and obtain a bootstrapping procedure showing that the solutions are classical. For p = 2 and almost critical dissipative nonlinearities we prove global well posedness, existence of global attractors in H-0(1)(Omega) and, uniformly with respect to the viscosity parameter, L-infinity(Omega) bounds for the attractors. Finally, we obtain a result on continuity of regular attractors which shows that, if n = 3, 4, the attractor of the Cahn-Hilliard problem coincides (in a sense to be specified) with the attractor for the corresponding semilinear heat equation. The inverse problem of determining a spacewise dependent heat source, together with the initial temperature for the parabolic heat equation, using the usual conditions of the direct problem and information from two supplementary temperature measurements at different instants of time is studied. These spacewise dependent temperature measurements ensure that this inverse problem has a unique solution, despite the solution being unstable, hence the problem is ill-posed. We propose an iterative algorithm for the stable reconstruction of both the initial data and the source based on a sequence of well-posed direct problems for the parabolic heat equation, which are solved at each iteration step using the boundary element method. The instability is overcome by stopping the iterations at the first iteration for which the discrepancy principle is satisfied. Numerical results are presented for a typical benchmark test example, which has the input measured data perturbed by increasing amounts of random noise. The numerical results show that the proposed procedure gives accurate numerical approximations in relatively few iterations.

This paper investigates the inverse problem of determining a spacewise dependent heat source in the parabolic heat equation using the usual conditions of the direct problem and information from a supplementary temperature measurement at a given single instant of time. The spacewise dependent temperature measurement ensures that the inverse problem has a unique solution, but this solution is unstable, hence the problem is ill-posed. For this inverse problem, we propose an iterative algorithm based on a sequence of well-posed direct problems which are solved at each iteration step using the boundary element method (BEM). The instability is overcome by stopping the iterations at the first iteration for which the discrepancy principle is satisfied. Numerical results are presented for various typical benchmark test examples which have the input measured data perturbed by increasing amounts of random noise.

We propose and investigate an application of the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) to the radially symmetric and axisymmetric backward heat conduction problem (BHCP) in a solid or hollow cylinder. In the BHCP, the initial temperature is to be determined from the temperature measurements at a later time. This is an inverse and ill-posed problem, and we employ and generalize the MFS regularization approach [B.T. Johansson and D. Lesnic, A method of fundamental solutions for transient heat conduction, Eng. Anal. Boundary Elements 32 (2008), pp. 697–703] for the time-dependent heat equation to obtain a stable and accurate numerical approximation with small computational cost.

Let A be a positive definite operator in a Hilbert space and consider the initial value problem for u(t) = -A(2)u. Using a representation of the semigroup exp(-A(2)t) in terms of the group exp(iAt) we express u in terms of the solution of the standard heat equation w(t) = W-yy, with initial values v solving the initial value problem for v(y) = iAv. This representation is used to construct a method for approximating u in terms of approximations of v. In the case that A is a 2(nd) order elliptic operator the method is combined with finite elements in the spatial variable and then reduces the solution of the 4(th) order equation for u to that of the 2(nd) order equation for v, followed by the solution of the heat equation in one space variable.

The magnetisation of bulk high temperature superconductors (HTS), such as RE-Ba-Cu-O [(RE)BCO, where RE is a rare earth element or Y], by a practical technique is essential for their application in high field, permanent magnet-like devices. Research to-date into the pulsed field magnetisation (PFM) of these materials, however, has been limited generally to experimental techniques, with relatively little progress in the development of theoretical models. This is because not only is a multi-physics approach needed to take account of the heating of the samples but also the high electric fields generated are well above the regime in which there are reliable experimental results. This paper describes a framework of theoretical simulation using the finite element method (FEM) that is applicable to both single- and multi-pulse magnetisation processes of (RE)BCO bulk superconductors. The model incorporates the heat equation and provides a convenient way of determining the distribution of trapped field, current density and temperature change within a bulk superconductor at each stage of the magnetisation process. An example of the single-pulse magnetisation of a (RE)BCO bulk is described. Potentially, the model may serve as a cost-effective tool for the optimisation of the bulk geometry and the magnetisation profile in multi-pulse magnetisation processes. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The effects of complex boundary conditions on flows are represented by a volume force in the immersed boundary methods. The problem with this representation is that the volume force exhibits non-physical oscillations in moving boundary simulations. A smoothing technique for discrete delta functions has been developed in this paper to suppress the non-physical oscillations in the volume forces. We have found that the non-physical oscillations are mainly due to the fact that the derivatives of the regular discrete delta functions do not satisfy certain moment conditions. It has been shown that the smoothed discrete delta functions constructed in this paper have one-order higher derivative than the regular ones. Moreover, not only the smoothed discrete delta functions satisfy the first two discrete moment conditions, but also their derivatives satisfy one-order higher moment condition than the regular ones. The smoothed discrete delta functions are tested by three test cases: a one-dimensional heat equation with a moving singular force, a two-dimensional flow past an oscillating cylinder, and the vortex-induced vibration of a cylinder. The numerical examples in these cases demonstrate that the smoothed discrete delta functions can effectively suppress the non-physical oscillations in the volume forces and improve the accuracy of the immersed boundary method with direct forcing in moving boundary simulations.

A means of assessing the effectiveness of methods used in the numerical solution of various linear ill-posed problems is outlined. Two methods: Tikhonov' s method of regularization and the quasireversibility method of Lattès and Lions are appraised from this point of view.

In the former method, Tikhonov provides a useful means for incorporating a constraint into numerical algorithms. The analysis suggests that the approach can be generalized to embody constraints other than those employed by Tikhonov. This is effected and the general "T-method" is the result.

A T-method is used on an extended version of the backwards heat equation with spatially variable coefficients. Numerical computations based upon it are performed.

The statistical method developed by Franklin is shown to have an interpretation as a T-method. This interpretation, although somewhat loose, does explain some empirical convergence properties which are difficult to pin down via a purely statistical argument.
