Variaciones de lo figural: El pensamiento plástico de Jean Epstein,Stephen Dwoskin y Philippe Grandrieux

En Discurso,Figura, Jean François Lyotard acuña un término: “figural”, que teóricos como Nicole Brenez y Philippe Dubois han llevado al terreno del análisis de la imagen cinematográfica. El pensamiento figural hace de la materialidad de la imagen, de su plasticidad, su objeto de estudio privilegiado. Los cineastas Jean Epstein, Philippe Grandrieux o Stephen Dwoskin en sus figuraciones fílmicas del cuerpo y del rostro, pero también en sus reflexiones teóricas sobre el cine en forma de artículos o, incluso, documentos directamente asociados al rodaje como su registro filmado, han erigido un espacio privilegiado en que este concepto de lo figural se despliega en múltiples variaciones.

End point of Hawking radiation

The formation and semiclassical evaporation of two-dimensional black holes is studied in an exactly solvable model. Above a certain threshold energy flux, collapsing matter forms a singularity inside an apparent horizon. As the black hole evaporates the apparent horizon recedes and meets the singularity in a finite proper time. The singularity emerges naked, and future evolution of the geometry requires boundary conditions to be imposed there. There is a natural choice of boundary conditions which matches the evaporated black hole solution onto the linear dilaton vacuum. Below the threshold energy flux no horizon forms and boundary conditions can be imposed where infalling matter is reflected from a timelike boundary. All information is recovered at spatial infinity in this case.

La llista de qualificatius que es podrien utilitzar per definir Stephen Hawking seria, sens dubte, immensa, i segur que no reflectiria tots els aspectes de la seva personalitat. No és fàcil fer una descripció del tot. També és immens l'Univers on vivim, un espai aparentment inhòspit, com una freda cadira de rodes absolutament mecanitzada; però tanmateix ple d'una bellesa captivadora, que hostatja planetes com el nostre, capaços de generar intel·lectes i personalitats tan pròspers, influents i al mateix temps paradoxals com els de Hawking. Una bellesa, la de l'Univers, que no només és visual i cromàtica, sinó també conceptual, física i matemàtica, curulla de relacions aparentment impossibles. Tanmateix, el treball i la vida de Hawking ens l'han fet una mica menys desconegut, una mica més proper; ens han acostat a la teoria del tot.

Metaphilosophy and educating: Stephen C. Pepper's selectivism as a basis for educational excellence

Atheory of educating is always derived from philosophical tenets. In Western society these tenets are concerned primarily with the provision, maintenance and evolution of knowledge for use by future generations. The provision of knowledge for future generations is for the purpose of ensuring cultural and biological survival. Essentially this provision involves two major criteria: first, that only that knowledge which has been judged to be exce11 ent shou1d be passed on and, second, in add it ion to providing knowledge claims, the evidence for knowledge claims must also be extended in order to fully enrich meaning for an individual involved in a learning experience. Embedded in such a theory of educating are a concept of educational excellence and a concept of the provision of evidence for knowledge claims. This thesis applied the contributions of metaphilosophy to the concepts of educational excellence and the provision of evidence. The metaphilosophy of Stephen C. Pepper was examined for its contributions to a theory of educating and a concept of educational excellence. Metaphilosophy is concerned with making knowledge meaningful. It is a subject matter which may be studied in and of itself and it is a method for acquiring meaning by interpreting knowledge. Historically people have interpreted the knowledge of the world from basically four adequate world views which Pepper termed formism, mechanism, contextual ism and organicism. He later proposed a fifth world view which he termed selectivism. In this thesis these world views were shown to contribute in a variety of ways to educational excellence, most particularly as they allow for interpretations and analysis of evidence about knowledge claims. Selecti vismwas examined in depth and was shown to contribute to educational excellence in two major ways; first, as a world hypothesis which offers an interpretation of the evidence for knowledge claims and, second, as a metahypothesis which provides knowledge about the nature of knowledge. Finally the importance of metaphilosophy in contributing to cultural survival was demonstrated in a discussion of the potential impact of selectivism on a theory of educating and educational excellence.
