Simulazioni Software-In-the-Loop per la verifica funzionale di un sistema di tracking satellitare (ALMATracker)

L'ALMATracker è un sistema di puntamento per la stazione di terra di ALMASat-1. La sua configurazione non segue la classica Azimuth-Elevazione, bensì utilizza gli assi α-β per evitare punti di singolarità nelle posizioni vicino allo zenit. Ancora in fase di progettazione, utilizzando in congiunta SolidWorks e LabVIEW si è creato un Software-in-the-loop per la sua verifica funzionale, grazie all'utilizzo del relativamente nuovo pacchetto NI Softmotion. Data la scarsa esperienza e documentazione che si hanno su questo recente tool, si è prima creato un Case Study che simulasse un sistema di coordinate cilindriche in modo da acquisire competenza. I risultati conseguiti sono poi stati sfruttati per la creazione di un SIL per la simulazione del movimento dell'ALMATracker. L'utilizzo di questa metodologia di progettazione non solo ha confermato la validità del design proposto, ma anche evidenziato i problemi e le potenzialità che caratterizzano questo pacchetto software dandone un analisi approfondita.

In the Loop: One Librarian's Experiences Teaching Within First-Year Learning Communities

Unique as snowflakes, learning communities are formed in countless ways. Some are designed specifically for first-year students, while others offer combined or clustered upper-level courses. Most involve at least two linked courses, and some add residential and social components. Many address core general education and basic skills requirements. Learning communities differ in design, yet they are similar in striving to enhance students' academic and social growth. First-year learning communities foster experiences that have been linked to academic success and retention. They also offer unique opportunities for librarians interested in collaborating with departmental faculty and enhancing teaching skills. This article will explore one librarian's experiences teaching within three first-year learning communities at Buffalo State College.

Nitrogen oxides in the firn air at Summit, Greenland

Measurements of NOx within the snowpack at Summit, Greenland were carried out from June 2008 to July 2010, using a novel system to sample firn air with minimal disruption of the snowpack. These long-term measurements were motivated by the need of improving the representation of air-snow interactions in global models. Results indicated that the NOx budget within the snowpack was on the order of 550 pptv as maximum, and was constituted primarily for NO2. NOx production was observed within the first 50 cm of the snowpack during the sunlight season between February and August. Presence of NOx at larger depths was attributed to high speed wind and vertical transport processes. Production of NO correlated with the seasonal incoming radiation profile, while NO2 maximum was observed in April. These measurements constitute the larger data set of NOx within the firn and will improve the representation of processes driving snow photochemistry at Summit.

BENZENE TOXICITY AND THE OCCURRENCE OF BENZENE IN THE AMBIENT AIR OF THE HOUSTON AREA

This study was conducted by either literature review or actual field survey. Results are summarized as follows: (1) Long-term occupational exposure of workers to benzene vapor at levels of 3-7 ppm, 2-3 ppm and 1.6 ppm may result in a decreased level of leucocyte alkaline phosphates, an increased incidence of chromosome aberrations and an increased level of ALA in erythrocytes, respectively; (2) Benzene is capable of causing fetotoxic effects in animals at levels as low as 10 ppm by volume; (3) Exposure of animals to or less than 1 ppm benzene vapor may result in leucopenia, an inverse ratio of muscle antagonist chronaxy and a decreased level of ascorbic acid in fetus's and mother's liver as well as whole embryo; (4) Benzene is causally associated with the increased incidence of pancytopenia, including unicytopenia, bicytopenia and aplastic anemia, and chromosome aberrations in occupational exposure population, and at best benzene must also be considered as a leukemogen; (5) Since it can be emitted into the atmosphere from both man-made and natural sources, benzene in some concentrations is present everywhere in the various compartments of the environment; (6) The findings of the emission of benzene from certain natural sources indicate that reducing benzene to a zero-level of exposure is theoretically impossible; (7) The annual average of benzene concentration detected in the Houston ambient air is 2.50 ppb, which is about 2.4 times higher than the nation-wide annual average exposure level and may have been some health implications to the general public; (8) In the Houston area, stationary sources are more important than mobile sources in contributing to benzene in the ambient air. ^
