Disabled Revolutionary War Veterans and the Construction of Disability in the Early United States, c. 1776-1840

This thesis addresses the following broad research question: what did it mean to be a disabled Revolutionary War veteran in the early United States during the period from 1776 to roughly 1840? The study approaches the question from two angles: a state-centred one and an experiential one. In both cases, the theoretical framework employed comes from disability studies. Consequently, disability is regarded as a sociocultural phenomenon rather than a medical condition. The state-centred dimension of the study explores the meaning of disability and disabled veterans to the early American state through an examination of the major military pension laws of the period. An analysis of this legislation, particularly the invalid pension acts of 1793 and 1806, indicates that the early United States represents a key period in the development of the modern disability category. The experiential approach, in contrast, shifts the focus of attention away from the state towards the lived experiences of disabled veterans. It seeks to address the issue of whether or not the disabilities of disabled veterans had any significant material impact on their everyday lives. It does this through a comparison of the situation of 153 disabled veterans with that of an equivalent number of nondisabled veterans. The former group received invalid pensions while the latter did not. In comparing the material conditions of disabled and nondisabled veterans, a wide range of primary sources from military records to memoirs and letters are used. The most important sources in this regard are the pension application papers submitted by veterans in the early nineteenth century. These provide us with a unique insight into the everyday lives of veterans. Looking at the issue of experience through the window of the pension files reveals that there was not much difference in the broad contours of disabled and nondisabled veteran life. This finding has implications for the theorisation of disability that are highlighted and discussed in the thesis. The main themes covered in this study are: the wartime experiences of injured American soldiers, the military pension establishment of the early United States and the legal construction of disability, and the post-war working and family lives of disabled veterans. Defining the ‘modified Griffin plot’ in vortex-induced vibration: revealing the effect of Reynolds number using controlled damping

In the present work, we study the transverse vortex-induced vibrations of an elastically mounted rigid cylinder in a fluid flow. We employ a technique to accurately control the structural damping, enabling the system to take on both negative and positive damping. This permits a systematic study of the effects of system mass and damping on the peak vibration response. Previous experiments over the last 30 years indicate a large scatter in peak-amplitude data ($A^*$) versus the product of mass–damping ($\alpha$), in the so-called ‘Griffin plot’. A principal result in the present work is the discovery that the data collapse very well if one takes into account the effect of Reynolds number ($\mbox{\textit{Re}}$), as an extra parameter in a modified Griffin plot. Peak amplitudes corresponding to zero damping ($A^*_{{\alpha}{=}0}$), for a compilation of experiments over a wide range of $\mbox{\textit{Re}}\,{=}\,500-33000$, are very well represented by the functional form $A^*_{\alpha{=}0} \,{=}\, f(\mbox{\textit{Re}}) \,{=}\, \log(0.41\,\mbox{\textit{Re}}^{0.36}$). For a given $\mbox{\textit{Re}}$, the amplitude $A^*$ appears to be proportional to a function of mass–damping, $A^*\propto g(\alpha)$, which is a similar function over all $\mbox{\textit{Re}}$. A good best-fit for a wide range of mass–damping and Reynolds number is thus given by the following simple expression, where $A^*\,{=}\, g(\alpha)\,f(\mbox{\textit{Re}})$: \[ A^* \,{=}\,(1 - 1.12\,\alpha + 0.30\,\alpha^2)\,\log (0.41\,\mbox{\textit{Re}}^{0.36}). \] In essence, by using a renormalized parameter, which we define as the ‘modified amplitude’, $A^*_M\,{=}\,A^*/A^*_{\alpha{=}0}$, the previously scattered data collapse very well onto a single curve, $g(\alpha)$, on what we refer to as the ‘modified Griffin plot’. There has also been much debate over the last three decades concerning the validity of using the product of mass and damping (such as $\alpha$) in these problems. Our results indicate that the combined mass–damping parameter ($\alpha$) does indeed collapse peak-amplitude data well, at a given $\mbox{\textit{Re}}$, independent of the precise mass and damping values, for mass ratios down to $m^*\,{=}\,1$.

Antonio Somellera : un testimonio de violencia política en tiempos de Rosas (1838-1840)

La obra publicada hacia fines del siglo XIX por el Comodoro Antonio Somellera (1812-1889) bajo el nombre Recuerdos de una víctima de la Mazorca, es un valiosísimo documento histórico para analizar los hechos e ideas que determinaron muchos de los aspectos de la vida política del momento al que se refiere, el gobierno de Juan Manuel de Rosas en Buenos Aires durante 1838-1840. Allí se expresa cabalmente uno de los elementos más controvertidos de la historia del país: la violencia política, tanto física como discursiva, a que estaban acostumbrados todos los hombres que dirigían, ya sea como gobierno o como oposición, los destinos de la Argentina. A través de un análisis contextualizado y profundo de estas Memorias, el presente trabajo buscará dilucidar algunos de los aspectos estructurales que caracterizaron la realidad política de esos años.

Growth response of Heterobranchus longifilis (Valenciennes, 1840) fingerlings fed raw and boiled Mucuna cochinchinensis seed meal

Feeding trial was conducted in static water to assess the growth of H. longifilis fingerlings fed different I inclusion levels of mucuna seed meal (MSM). Raw and boiled MSM were used in the diets at 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% inclusion levels and the performance of fish fed these diets was compared with fish fed a fishmeal-based diet which contained 40% protein. All diets were prepared to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric A two by five factorial experiment with three replicates using ten fish of average initial weight 1 .46g was carried out. Daily fish ration of five percent body weight was administered two times for eight weeks. The specific growth rate in diets 1 (control) and 6(10% boiled MSM) were similar and significantly (P<0.05) higher than the other dietary groups. The significantly lower growth performance of fish fed diets containing higher inclusion levels of both raw and boiled MSM might be due to incomplete elimination of the antinutritional factors present in MSM by boiling. Other methods of processing MSM to improve its nutritive value should be investigated. (7 page document)
