Computer equipment, once viewed as leading edge, is quickly condemned as obsolete and banished to basement store rooms or rubbish bins. The magpie instincts of some of the academics and technicians at the University of Greenwich, London, preserved some such relics in cluttered offices and garages to the dismay of colleagues and partners. When the University moved into its new campus in the historic buildings of the Old Royal Naval College in the center of Greenwich, corridor space in King William Court provided an opportunity to display some of this equipment so that students could see these objects and gain a more vivid appreciation of their subject's history.

The GAD Advocacy Service is funded by the London Borough of Greenwich Directorate of Neighbourhood Services; its remit to support disabled people experiencing Hate Crime, Domestic Violence and Harassment. Run by disabled personnel and giving advice to all disabled people it is unique in London. Since its inception in 2004, the Advocacy Service has been stretched to its limit - there is a need to extend the remit of the Advocacy Service to give specialist legal advice on other issues. In 2003, the CEDRM-UK project was set up in the University of Greenwich Law Department as part of the Disability Rights Promotion International Legal Education and Research Project; its objectives were firstly, to facilitate the collection of data on the effectiveness of legislation in promoting the rights of disabled persons; and secondly, to pilot new methods in teaching and training in Human Rights Law – students acquire an expertise in Human Rights Law through research into the practical application of legislation relating to civil and human rights in the daily life of the community. In July 2007, GAD and CEDRM-UK embarked on a joint project to report on the work of the Advocacy Service and to create a database to support its caseload. The 2008-9 Project team will report on their work and findings relating to facilitating equality in the workplace; the inclusion of cancer, HIV and multiple sclerosis within the legal definition of disability and the implications of the statutory duty to promote disability equality for the provision of extracurricular activities for schoolchildren. This paper examines whether increases to published wholesale prices justify the retail electricity price increases imposed on residential consumers in January 2008. The study is based on analysis of two questions: Is the reported wholesale price a reliable indicator of the cost electricity retailers are paying to buy power; and is the corporate structure of the British electricity sector competitive? Phytoplankton biomass and rate of production were measured along a transect from 57.54 degreesN to 37.01 degreesN in the northeast Atlantic during July 1996 and at a series of stations over a 7-day period at 37 degreesN 20 degreesW. Surface nutrient concentrations ranged from 4 mu mol l(-1) NO3-, and 0.35 mu mol l(-1) PO43- at 57.54 degreesN to <10 nmol l(-1) NO3- and similar to 10 nmol l(-1) PO43- at 37.01 degreesN. The greatest phytoplankton biomass and production were measured in the vicinity of a frontal system at 50 degreesN, and there was a general decline in total phytoplankton biomass and production to the south of the transect. Production was measured in three size fractions. At the station with the highest chlorophyll concentrations (50.34 degreesN), phytoplankton cells larger than 5 mum dominated the assemblage, accounting for 72% of the chlorophyll concentration (22.9 mg m(-2)) and 51% of primary production (54.1 mmol Cm-2 d(-1)), but picophytoplankton production was also high (43%). At 57 degreesN, carbon fixation by the > 5 mum fraction accounted for 75% of the daily production of 60.75 mmol Cm-2 d(-1). At 37 degreesN, picophytoplankton was the dominant group, accounting for similar to 58% (10 mg m(-2)) of chlorophyll and similar to 64% (46 mmol Cm-2 d(-1)), of primary production. Nitrate, ammonium and phosphate uptake rates also were determined. Although high nitrate uptake rates were measured in the surface water at similar to 50 degreesN, the greatest uptake rates of both depth-integrated nitrate and ammonium were at the south of the transect. At 37 degreesN, a deep euphotic zone was present and light penetrated through the nitracline; total nitrate uptake was enhanced because of assimilation at the base of the euphotic zone. As a consequence, high values of depth-integrated f-ratio were measured in the oligotrophic waters at the south of the transect. Phosphate was predominantly incorporated into the picoplankton fraction, which included heterotrophic and autotrophic components, at all stations and a significant proportion of phosphate uptake occurred in the dark. The C:N:P assimilation ratios were variable throughout the region; phosphate uptake was generally greater than would be expected if nutrient assimilation were in proportion to the Redfield ratio. On the Limits of Greenwich Mean Time, or The Failure of a Modernist Revolution From the introduction of World Standard Time in 1884 to Einstein’s theory of relativity, the nature and regulation of time was a highly contested issue in modernism, with profound political, social and epistemological consequences. Modernist aesthetic sensibilities widely revolted against the increasingly strict rule of the clock, which, as Georg Simmel observed in “The Metropolis and Mental Life,” was established as the necessary basis of a capitalist, urban life. This paper will focus on the contending conceptions of time arising in key modernist texts by authors like Joyce, Woolf and Conrad. I will argue that the uniformity and regularity of time necessary to a rising capitalist society came under attack in a similar way by both modernist literary aesthetics and new scientific discoveries. However, while Einstein’s theory of relativity may have led to a subsequent change of paradigm in scientific thought, it has failed to significantly alter social and popular conceptions of time. Although alternative ways of thinking and living with time are proposed by modernist authors, they remain isolated aesthetic experiments, ineffectual against the regulatory pressure of economic and social structures. In this struggle about the nature of time, so I suggest, science and literature join force against a society that is increasingly governed by economic reason. The fact that they lost this struggle can serve as a striking illustration of an increasing shift of social influence from science and art towards economy.
